1 North Dakota NODAK NOTEBOOK *Bismarck Legacy, in just 2nd season, is new girls A champ *Hillsboro-Central Valley boys win B title at buzzer *Kindred tops North Star in B girls duel of unbeatens Volume 2 Issue No. 6 April State championships issue The Minot players and coaches had a sign ready if they won their 3rd state title in a row. Minot boys get the hat trick By Bruce Strand It s a hat trick for Minot boys basketball. The Magicians are only the third team in North Dakota history to win three state titles in a row. Led by third-year players Justin Engg and KyJuan Johnson, whose teams won 75 of 80 games, Minot scuttled Bismarck Century in the finals to capture their staterecord 16th title overall. KyJuan and Justin were our leaders all year, coach Dean Winczewski told the North Dakota Basketball News. They know what it takes to be successful and did a great job of pushing the other team members to push themselves. They were very sacrificial in that they both could have scored more, but they were concerned about winning and did what they had to do to help us win. The Magicians, who toppled topranked, previously unbeaten Fargo Davies in the semifinals, joined Bismarck ( ) and Fargo Central ( ) as the only North Dakota boys basketball three-peat teams ever. Johnson, a guard, delivered 21 points and seven rebounds in the finals. Engg, a post, provided 12 points and nine rebounds. Chandler Albertson added seven points and Alex Schimke five points. The Magicians (25-2) had a big edge outside the arc, making eight of 26 while Century (22-5) went 1-for- 21. Josh Sipes notched 13 points and nine rebounds for Century and Lucas Mayer had 10 points and 13 rebounds. We were able to use a zone trap to disrupt Century's offense and keep them off-balance, Winczewski said. We created turnovers and were able to create tempo and got open shots because of it. KyJuan had a tremendous game on offense and created mischief on defense. Century had won 13 straight, including a regional win over Minot. Minot: continued on page 10

2 Pacesetter Newsletter North Dakota Basketball News April 19 Page 2 New power Legacy busts a dynasty By Bruce Strand Bismarck Legacy didn t even have a girls basketball team four years ago but emerged as a dynasty-busting, cool-inthe-clutch state champion this year. In just their second year as a varsity program, with their first senior class, Legacy held off a furious rally by three-time defending champion Fargo Shanley to pull out a win in the Class A championship game March 4. Before that, the Sabres (20-7) ground out two overtime victories to reach the finals at Bismarck Event Center. Four years ago, they decided they were going to have a basketball team at Legacy, coach Jim Petrk told the Bismarck Tribune. They stuck with it. We have eight seniors that stuck it out all the way through, and I could not be more happy for those kids. The finals victory was led by senior forward Brita Feland with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Whitney Thomas had nine points and eight rebounds, and Kyla Schock eight points. Legacy led by 11 points in the second half, but Shanley freshman Reile Payne led the Deacons on a 13-1 run for brief led. Payne s 16 points included nine in that run and a layup for the lead. Unfazed, Legacy rattled off six straight points, regaining the lead with Mercedes Baumgartner s two free shots and padding it with Feland s three-point play. Along with Payne s 16 points, Shanley had Caira Berg with 10 points, Hadley Huber with nine and Emily Dietz, a North Dakota recruit, with 22 rebounds and six points. Dietz had 54 rebounds in three state games. Bismark Legacy savored their championship after their third straight harrowing win, over Shanley. said. Luckily our defensive plan worked to a T. The smaller Sabres decided to pack the lane with bodies and limit to room Shanley s formidable posts had to work with. They pressured the ball until it crossed midcoast, then fell back and hoped Shanley s outside shots would not fall. Legacy shot a little better than Shanley, 20-for-56 to their 18-for-60, with both teams off the mark from long range at 5-for-21 and 3-for-18 respectively. Stanley had a rebound edge. Legacy had to battle all the way through the tournament. The Sabres opened with a overtime win over Fargo Davies with Baumgartner drilling a long threepointer with :07 left in regulation to tie it 56-56, then sinking three of four free shots in OT. Baumgartner had 17 points and Whitney Thomas 12. Carly Kottsick had 20 for Davies. They re so long, I was worried about scoring, Petrik Legacy: continued on page 10

6 Pacesetter Newsletter North Dakota Basketball News April 19 Page 6 Shot at horn gives HCV title By Bruce Strand Going for the last shot is easier said than done, especially with a state championship on the line. But Hillsboro-Central Valley and Kyle Henningsgard executed it to perfection and won Class B state title on his threepointer at the buzzer March 18 at the Minot Dome. "The ball was in my hands with 30 seconds left, the senior guard recounted to the Minot Daily News. I tried to make a play for the team. The coach trusted me the team trusted me. I was able to put it up and it went in." The No. 3 seeded Burros (24-3) thus added a state title to the one from 1981 in the trophy case, and prevented top-seeded FWM (25-2) from repeating as champion. Both FWM losses came against HCV, which handed the Indians their first loss Jan. 13. The final play of Henningsgard s prep career was kind of the shot that every basketball player dreams about. He sank 11 of his 15 in the final quarter. Tanner Lineal added 14 points, Jack Camrud 11 and Reed eight for the Burros, who won mainly with shooting accuracy, 23-for-36, although they almost blew it at the line, going 7-for-16, HCV got the ball on a defensive stop with just over a half-minute left. They did not call a time-out. Coach Elliot Rotvold trusted them, as Henningsgard said. "With the game tied. we figured let's get the last shot, and if it goes in we win and if it doesn't go in, we go to overtime, Rotvold said. They are prepared for that situation. I ll put the ball in Kyle s hands, especially with the game tied. As the final seconds wound down, a defender tapped the ball out of Henningsgard s hands but it went right to his teammate Austin Reed. Henningsgard retreated to the corner. I looked up at the clock and saw that the time was ticking down and three blue jerseys were around me, Reed told the Minot paper. Then he heard Henningsgard call his name. I passed to him in the corner. They got a good contest on it, but he got it off quick enough. When it hit the bottom of the net, that was awesome. What a game... What a game, marveled Rotvold. Kyle Henningsgard launched a 3-pointer in a previous game. Four Winds-Minnwaukan was led by Tronis McKay with 21 points. McKay was named top senior athlete for Class B. Irvin Tomahawk added 16 and Steve Redfox 12. Hillsboro/Central Valley topped Ellendale in the semifinals as Henningsgard delivered 28 points. Camrud snagged 18 rebounds while scoring 16 points. HCV opened with a win over Turtle Lake-Mercer-McCluskey as Reed scored 14 points and Jack Camud scored 10 while grabbing 13 rebounds. Four Winds/Minnwauken rolled past Oak Grove in the semifinals as Tomahawk sank 18 points, and McKay logged 15 points and 10 rebounds. They opened with a win over Stanley led by Black with 23 points and 10 rebounds and McKay with 18 points. *Ellendale (21-6) snagged third place beating Fargo Oak Grove Luke Wertz netted 21 points, Hunter White 20 and Brennan Vance 19. Andrew Christianson hit 20 and Bryce Bakkegard 16 for Oak Grove.

8 Pacesetter Newsletter North Dakota Basketball News April 19 Page 8 Kindred wins duel of unbeatens By Bruce Strand There were two unbeaten girls teams left in the state when Kindred and North Star clashed for the right to be the last one standing and the state Class B champion. The No. 2 Kindred Vikings earned those distinctions with a conquest of No. 1 North Star Bearcats at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks on March 4, finishing North Star was Each team was looking for its first state title in girls basketball although Kindred has 17 overall. "Somebody was going to get that first loss. I'm just glad it wasn't us, Kindred coach Perry Piatz remarked to Forum News Services. It was a team effort. We don't rely on one or two players.'' It was great fun for both sides, North Star coach Jill Vote tod the North Dakota Basketball News. The excitement of playing for a state championship, and knowing it was between two undefeated teams, only adds to the hype. I thought both teams worked hard, and handled themselves with a lot of maturity and dignity. Both had the same vision, and unfortunately we came up a bit short. Brooke Hiatt drilled four of six 3-pointers and led Kindred with 15 points. Seventh-grader Abigail Duscherergave them a 13-point boost off the bench including their last nine points of the game. Madison Erickson added nine points and seven rebounds, Kyra Brazen eight points and Mikayla Reinke two points, seven assists and six rebounds. Kindred led by seven, gave up a couple baskets off Victoria Braaten and Abigail Duscherer pose with the trophy. turnovers, then locked it down. In a game like this one you have to finish and we were able to get some big baskets down the stretch, said Piatz. North Star s 6-foot-5 senior Macey Kvilvang, a Miss Basketball finalist and the tournament MVP, kept the Bearcats in the game with 22 points. Stephanie Miller added 12 points. But the Bearcats were held to 42. Our defense has been good all year. We take pride in it, Kindred s Mikayla Reinke told the Bismarck Tribune. We knew that if we could contain (Kvilvang) and stop everyone else, we would have a chance to win. The defense really stepped up tonight. Everyone worked hard. Said Piatz: Their center was a matchup problem for us but they also had two other good guards that we did a great job on. I think our depth wore them down in the end that was the difference. Kindred started five seniors Hiatt, Reinke, Madison Erickson, Kyra Braaten and Jensen Odegaard. Kindred is very balanced and well-coached with very good athleticism and length, said Vote, who was named Class B coach of the year. They were able to apply a lot of ball pressure that caused us to rush in our offensive set a bit more than normal. They were able to cover ground defensively faster than we were accustomed to. Piatz, also activities director, closed his coaching career with the state finals win. He was in six years. Kindred: continued on page 10

12 Pacesetter Newsletter North Dakota Basketball News April 19 Page 12 The road to Minneapolis-St. Paul Youth teams now have Midwest Madness Playoffs By Jeff McCarron Pacesetter Director There is a tug-of-war on for basketball players. This battle splits two ways: the groups that offer all-star team or club team tournaments and the groups that offer school team or community team tournaments. At Pacesetter, we provide for the hometown team group, where youth basketball teams in grades 4-9 that are school-based or community-based now have a Final Four-style playoff system, the Pacesetter Great Four-State championships, that involve over 900 teams in four states: MN-IA-ND-SD. Pacesetter Sports started this system in 2010 to give school teams an exciting playoff to match or surpass the lure of AAU teams traveling to tournaments around the country. All players playing in the Pacesetter Playoffs must either attend the same school or live in the same city, school district or tribal community. Smaller schools with under 400 enrollment in grades 9-12 may combine if the total enrollment when combined is 400 or less. Teams begin with Region Playoffs in February-April in their own section of their state, seeking to advance to their state championships. The top two teams in their state tournaments then advance to the Pacesetter Great Four-State champion-ships in the Twin Cities. The Target Center hosted the championships from Due to construction this summer, the championships will be held at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Last year Minnesota and North Dakota won four Great State titles, Iowa won three four-state titles and South Dakota won one four-state title. SOUTH DAKOTA 5th Grade Boys Sioux Falls Hurricanes Fliers, further information and registration are available at In following a tournament tradition, all teams playing in the Great Four-State tournament are invited to a large team meeting, which could be held in a Marriott or Radisson ballroom, a Timberwolves suite, or on the main Target Center floor the night before their event, and all players from every team are introduced in front of the hundreds of players, parents and coaches. Their teammates are their friends from their own community, and they will be playing together soon on the same high school team. Most of the parents have known every player from childhood. The next day the players get to play together in front of all their fans on the Target Center floor, home of the NBA Timberwolves and the WNBA Lynx. It doesn t get any better than that.
