The scrimmage will take place at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton, Colo., and will begin at 1:30 p.m. MT. Associate head coach Mike Moody said members from his current squad might be mixed with former players, but that the game will be regulation length (four, eight-minute quarters) and structure. I m really excited to bring back so many girls who had a big part of the foundation and history of this program, Moody said. Being the final year of the program, it s going to be a little emotional, but I m glad that we can have this game, and have so many former players join us. Admission to the exhibition contest is free to the public. SENIOR DAY Taking place prior to the game on Saturday will be a recognition for CSU s two seniors, Melissa Fisher and Shelby Schaefer. Both players have been instrumental to the success of the program. Fisher, a four-year starter from Danville, Calif., is CSU s all-time saves leader, with 707 career stops. She owns three of the top eight single-season marks, and tied a program record with 16 saves vs. Wagner (Feb. 10). Schaefer, who is in her third year with the program after swimming at the Air Force Academy as a freshman, ranks first on the team in assists (37), and second in goals (55) and ejections drawn (30). For her career, the native of Roseville, Calif., ranks first in career assists (98), seventh in goals (126), fifth in ejections drawn (88) and fifth in points (224). It s been a true honor coaching these girls, Moody said of the two seniors. They re a true definition of a student-athlete, and they wear the Green and Gold proudly. They ve put the program on their backs, and they ve been go-to, impact players. They re phenomenal athletes, but getting to know these young ladies has been a lot of fun. They ve taught me a lot about being a person and a coach, and I can t thank them enough for what they ve done. I m really proud of them. SEEDED NO. 4 While the overall record isn t what the team had hoped for going into the season, the Rams are right where they were predicted in terms of conference standings. With its victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on April 6, CSU locked up the No. 4 seed heading into the WWPA Championships (April in Santa Clara, Calif.). It ties the highest seed in school history (also 2011). While the official schedule has yet to be released, the Rams will play No. 5 Sonoma State in the opening round of the Championships on April 26. Our overall record isn t where we d like it to be, but we won the games that mattered, Moody said. Going into the season we were seeded No. 4, and that s right where we finished. We re playing good polo, and we re in a good place to hopefully make a little noise and go out strong. In 2012, CSU was seeded No. 8 out of nine teams. The Rams won two games in the tournament to finish sixth. ON A ROLL Freshman Ariel Arcidiacono has scored in all 27 games of her collegiate career. Not only is that the most by a CSU player to begin her career, but it is also the most consecutive games scored in by any Rams player. Arcidiacono passed teammate Shelby Schaefer on March 30 for the record. Schaefer recorded a goal in 18 straight games between April 2012 and March After not scoring in one game, the senior has scored in 17 straight, which ranks third WWPA STANDINGS WWPA Championships Annual Results Year Seed Record Finish * 12 teams participated between , 11 teams in 2009, 10 teams in 2010, nine teams from and eight teams in Consecutive Games with a Goal Ariel Arcidiacono Shelby Schaefer...18 Shelby Schaefer Laurien White...14 Shelby Schaefer...13 Kallie Berry...13 Caroline Young...12 Annie Quinn...12 Team W L Pct. vs. WWPA vs. T-20 Home Away Neutral UC San Diego Loyola Marymount Santa Clara Media Information Colorado State Water Polo Contact... 3 AMONG THE BEST IN THE WEST Three CSU players Ariel Arcidiacono (69 goals; fifth), Shelby Schaefer (55; seventh) and Kelcy Barott (37; 14th) rank among the top scorers in the WWPA. CSU is one of two schools to have four players ranked in the top 20. Additionally, Stephanie Weed ranks 20th-with 30 goals. The foursome account for more than 85 percent of the team s offensive production. Not only are those players scoring, but they re also tallying assists for each other. Schaefer (37 assists; fifth) and Arcidiacono (31; eighth) also rank in the league s top 10 for helpers. They are just two of five players to be among the top 10 in both categories, and the only set of teammates. Despite splitting time in net, Michelle Slagle (174 saves; third) and Melissa Fisher (95; ninth) both rank in the top 10 for saves. The WWPA does not keep track of ejections drawn, but Barott has drawn 102 on the season, a program record. The previous high was 60. NO. 1 Several individual players are separating themselves as the best for a given aspect of the sport. And considering that 2013 will be the final season of water polo at CSU, these individuals will forever be at the top of the charts. When they are held to single digits, however, the Rams are winless (0-19). CSU scored a season-most 16 goals on Feb. 10 vs. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, which is tied for the ninth-most in single-game history. GAINING AN ADVANTAGE The Rams have been able to get on the board first 13 times in the team s 27 games, going 6-7 in those contests. When the team is ahead at halftime, they re a solid 7-3, as well as when they re leading entering the fourth quarter (7-3). However, in games in which CSU is trailing at halftime, the Rams are The Rams are 0-16 when trailing entering the final period. NIGHT AND DAY Perhaps just coincidence, but the Rams are 4-18 when playing during the day (before 5 p.m. local time). When the sun sets, CSU improves its mark to 4-1. SCHEDULING THE BEST Now in his eighth season with the Rams, Moody is known to piece together challenging schedules. More than half of his team s opponents over the past two seasons have been ranked at some point in the CWPA Women s Varsity Top 20 poll. Of the 20 teams currently ranked, CSU has faced 11 of them. Additionally, the Rams have played Michigan twice, and could play UC San Diego or LMU for a second time in this month s conference tournament. What s more, CSU played an exhibition contest against Cal State Northridge in January currently ranked No. 14 and defeated Brown on Feb. 9, which was ranked No. 20 at the time. In the latest report by the NCAA, CSU s stength of schedule is No. 23 and its RPI is No. 28. The WWPA is ranked as the third-toughest conference, based on RPI. ALL IN Playing 10 games in a nine-day period in late March required Moody to adjust his lineup a bit, allowing some of his bench to get additional playing time. Freshmen Savannah Carroll, Danielle Summers and Alexandra Dolan each saw their first action of the season March 16-17, in addition to Abigail Glennon, also a freshman, receiving extra time in the pool. Glennon and freshman Morgan Hurley recently scored their first collegiate goals. Our depth got so much better over the Arizona State Tournament, Moody said. I have confidence in our depth and our bench now, which is what hurt us early on in the season. BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK VICTORIES With three consecutive victories March 16-17, CSU earned its longest winning streak in two years. It was the program s ninth streak of three games or more, and its first since March CSU defeated Cal State San Bernardino, Whittier and La Verne to close out a 3-1 road trip. TOP GOALIE IN PROGRAM HISTORY Senior goalie Melissa Fisher made history on March 3 by becoming CSU water polo s all-time saves leader. On her final stop against Concordia, Fisher amassed her 671st save, passing Krystyna McCright. It actually means a lot, Fisher said. The girl who held the record before me was my coach my freshman year. It s almost like I m living a legacy. It s what every goalie hopes for in her four years. While the milestone is an honor for Fisher, recognition is nothing new for the native of Danville, Calif. Fisher posted 245 saves during her sophomore season, which ranks second in CSU history. Her season total as a freshman (223) ranks fourth, and as a junior she ranked eighth (144). In a February game against Wagner, Fisher posted 16 saves, which is tied for CSU s single-game record. Fish getting the all-time saves record is a really great accomplishment for her, Moody said. It s been an absolute joy working with her these last four years. She s a heck of a goalie, and is very consistent. She s a great athlete, a great leader and I m really happy to see her finish her career here and getting this honor. PICKING UP AN HISTORIC WIN The Rams victory over No. 20 Brown on Feb. 9 was an historic one, as it marked the second time in program history that CSU has beaten a nationally ranked team. The victory showed great efforts by senior Shelby Schaefer, who led the Rams with three goals, and junior Michelle Slagle, who had 12 stops in net. After holding a slim lead at halftime, 6-5, the Bears tied the score at 7-7 entering the final period. After a Brown goal with 34 seconds remaining made it 9-9, Schaefer responded, scoring with 4 tics on the clock to give the Rams a 10-9 upset. CSU s other ranked victory came on April 11, 2010, against No. 17 UC San Diego Colorado State Water Polo

4 ARCIDIACONO NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK Ariel Arcidiacono was honored as the KAP7 Co-WWPA Player of the Week for her performance Feb at the Brown Invite. The freshman from San Diego, Calif., tied a CSU single-game record with six goals against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, a 16-9 victory. She also had three assists, one steal and a drawn ejection in the win, which secured third place in the four-team tournament. Arcidiacono scored twice and had three assists and a steal in the Rams victory over No. 20 Brown. In four games during the weekend, she scored 10 goals, recorded 10 assists, had eight steals and drew five ejections. Ariel is doing a really great job, not only in the pool, but academically as well, Moody said. She s an impact player. When we recruited her out of San Diego we knew what we were getting. How well she s done is a testament to how great she is. She s a great teammates, a great player and is great all around. She s one of the reasons we ve been competitive all season, and why we ll be successful going forward. On the season, the freshman has 69 goals, which is tied for second in singleseason history. With four more, she can become CSU s top single-season scorer. Despite being a freshman, she also ranks 10th all-time for career goals scored. She has led the team in scoring 17 times, including 12 straight from March 17-April 7. During that 12-game span, she scored 38 total goals. 100TH VICTORY With its victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Feb. 10, CSU earned the 100th victory in school history. The program, which began in 2005, is (.381) in eight-plus seasons. GAINING NATIONAL ATTENTION CSU spent two weeks receiving national recognition in February, earning one vote in back-to-back CWPA Women s Varsity National Top 20 polls. The single point put the Rams tied for 22nd nationally each week. CSU received votes on five occasions last season, cracking the top 20 for the first time in program history on Jan. 25, DOUBLE TROUBLE Going into camp a year ago, Moody knew he had two viable options in goal. Now, more than a year later, it remains much of the same. Melissa Fisher has a program-record 707 career saves, and holds three of CSU s top seven single-season saves totals, while Michelle Slagle, who transferred to CSU from Loyola Marymount, set a single-game saves record with 16 stops at Michigan (Jan. 21, 2012). Her 174 saves this season ranks seventh, and for her career, she ranks fourth (298). FOURTH IN THE WWPA For the second consecutive season, CSU was picked by the WWPA coaches to finish fourth in the league, which tied the team s highest-ever preseason seed. We went into the WWPA Championships last year seeded No. 8, so to have us at No. 4, I m a little bit surprised, Moody said in January. I know the talent that we have, and what we re capable of doing, but for others to see that as well, that feels good. Finishing ahead of CSU in the preseason poll was Loyola Marymount (49 points), UC San Diego (43) and Santa Clara (36). Loyola Marymount and UC San Diego are currently ranked. The bottom half of the poll included Cal State East Bay (24), Sonoma State (20), Cal State Monterey Bay (15) and Cal State San Bernardino (7). NEW AQUATIC CENTER For seven years, EPIC had been home to the CSU water polo team. But beginning in 2012, the Rams relocated to the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center (VMAC), a new facility located in Thornton, Colo. The VMAC is a $19.5-million facility that features a 765,000-gallon, 50-meter Olympic-size pool. It allows the Rams to play their home games in a regulation water polo pool 25 meters in length by 20 meters in width, and at least seven meters deep for the first time. The facility opened two years ago. In addition to playing its home contests there, CSU also spends Saturdays practicing at the facility. Saturday will mark the final event at the VMAC for CSU water polo. FINAL SEASON OF WATER POLO AT CSU The water polo program was hit with hard news on Jan. 24, as it was announced that Colorado State University will discontinue the sponsorship of the sport after the completion of this season. Water polo, in its ninth season, was CSU s newest sport until CSU announced that it will add women s soccer in its place While there was obvious shock and disappointment, Moody believes that the announcement can bring his team together. It was obviously very emotional and very difficult, but we got right back to work and stayed focus on our routine, Moody said. We re in a good position mentally, physically and emotionally. We understand that we have a job to do and goals to accomplish, and that next year has no bearing on this season. THE RAMS RECORD WHEN... 6 A LOOK BACK ON 2013 Closing the regular season in Santa Clara (April 5-7) Despite going 1-4 over the weekend, Colorado State picked up a crucial WWPA win over Cal State Monterey Bay to unofficially claim the No. 4 seed entering the WWPA Championships. CSU went 3-4 in conference action this season, and the No. 4 seed will tie for the highest in program history (2011). The Rams began the weekend with a 13-8 loss at Cal State East Bay, followed by a 1-3 showing at The Bronco. Two of CSU s losses came to top-20 teams in No. 8 Hawai i and No. 17 UC San Diego. The Rams also lost to host Santa Clara after leading for much of the contest. Leading the team was freshman Ariel Arcidiacono and senior Shelby Schaefer. The duo combined for six total hat tricks and 28 of the team s 39 goals. Four of Arcidiacono s 15 scores came in the win over Monterey Bay. We obviously would have liked to have come away with more wins, but the victory over Monterey Bay was huge for us in terms of locking up the No. 4 seed, Moody said. We were without a couple key players all weekend because of injuries and sickness, so we really persevered. Training at Arizona State (March 22-24) Competing in one of the toughest tournaments in the country, CSU went 1-5 at the Arizona State Tournament, defeating La Verne, Four of CSU s five losses came against nationally ranked teams, including No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 Arizona State. Even though we didn t get many wins out of the trip, I saw the entire weekend as a success in a lot of ways, Moody said. It was a competitive training trip for us, and playing these top teams bodes well for the future of our schedule. We got better in a lot of areas, like our bench and depth. Four-game road swing in California (March 16-17) After being defeated by No. 14 Loyola Marymount, CSU picked up three consecutive victories, including a 10-5 win over WWPA foe Cal State San Bernardino. The threegame winning streak was the longest since March Aggie Shootout (March 2-3) The Rams made their first trip to the West Coast, coming away with a WWPA victory and an overall record of 1-3. While CSU would have liked to have gotten more wins on the weekend, the team was pleased to get a win in its WWPA debut, against Sonoma State. CSU also faced Santa Clara, No. 14 UC Davis and Concordia. Exhibition game vs. Colorado All-Stars (Feb. 23) Filling an open weekend, the Rams hosted the second annual exhibition game against the Colorado Club All-Stars, a makeshift team made up of the top players from the Air Force Academy, University of Colorado and University of Denver club teams. The Rams were dominant on both ends of the pool, shutting out the All-Stars, Had the game been a regulation contest, it would have marked CSU s first shutout, in addition to the most goals ever scored by the Rams. Freshman Ariel Arcidiacono scored just 24 seconds into the contest to put the Rams on top, 1-0. Three of CSU s first goals came from Arcidiacono, who finished the day with a team-high five. In addition to the freshman, six other Rams scored in the first half, giving CSU a 10-0 lead entering the intermission. At that point, Moody was able to use some of his reserves, including allowing goalie Michelle Slagle to play on offense, where she scored two goals. Brown Invite (Feb. 9-10) Storm Nemo prevented two teams Bucknell and St. Francis to make the trip to Providence, R.I., and trapped CSU in its hotel for about 24 hours. The tournament format was then reshuffled, beginning with round-robin matchups, followed by a championship and consolation game. Despite letting a lead slip away against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and losing 10-8 in overtime, the Rams responded with an upset over nationally ranked Brown. In the second day, CSU again led early including 4-1 after the first period and 5-4 entering the final frame but allowed five goals in the fourth quarter to fall to Wager, 9-5. That set up a rematch against CMS, where the Rams were dominant from start to finish, leading 8-0 early and never trailing in the 16-9 win to claim third. Season opener at the Michigan Kick-Off (Jan ) Playing in one of the premier tournaments in the nation, the Rams began their 2013 season 0-4 after dropping four contests all of which were to teams ranked in the top 14 nationally. While the Rams were unable to come with a victory, Moody saw several bright spots. We knew coming in it was going to be a tough battle, Moody said. In the end of the day, it s a difficult tournament. We played better in this tournament this year than we did last year, which I think will show that we re making strides in the right direction Colorado State Water Polo

7 CAREER UPDATES Several Rams are within reach, or are approaching, statistical records for their performance in the pool this season and for their careers: Ariel Arcidiacono Despite being just a freshman, ranks 10th in career goals, with 69. Her 69 goals this season is tied for second in CSU history, just four from passing Annie Quinn (2006) for the program mark. Has three single-game figures in CSU s top 10 for goals, including six vs. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Feb. 10) and Sonoma State (March 2), which is tied for first. She is one of seven players ever to reach that mark, and the only one to do it twice. Has 31 assists this season, which ranks fifth. She is six helpers away from fourth place, seven from third, eight from second and 15 from first. Her four assists vs. Cal State San Bernardino (March 16) is tied for seventh in single-game history. Kelcy Barott In less than two seasons, she already has drawn 129 career ejections, which ranks third. She can possibly finish her career ranked second, needing 17 more. Has 102 ejections drawn this season, a CSU record. The previous high was 60. Owns seven of CSU s top single-game ejections drawn marks eight vs. Michigan (Jan. 19), Santa Clara (March 3), and Hawai i (April 7); seven vs. San Jose State (Jan. 20) and Hartwick (March 24); and six vs. Michigan (March 23) and Cal State Monterey Bay (April 6). She also holds two figures that are tied for 10th, with five ejections drawn. Her 17 career blocks ranks sixth, five from cracking the top five. Ten of those blocks have come in 2013, which ranks ninth. Recorded five steals vs. Cal State East Bay (April 5), which is tied for ninth in single-game history. Kelsey Carrigan Her five steals vs. Cal State San Bernardino (March 16) are tied for ninth in single-game history. Melissa Fisher Has 707 career saves, which is a program record. The previous record of 660 was held by Krystyna McCright. With 16 saves against Wagner (Feb. 10), she tied a school record for saves in a game. Holds three of CSU s top eight single-season saves records, including 245 in 2011 (second), 223 in 2010 (fourth) and 144 in 2012 (eighth). She needs 25 more stops this season to become the first goalie to reach the top 10 four times. Maggie McShane Has 14 career blocks, which ranks eighth all-time. Lauren Porteus Has 49 career ejections drawn (ninth), needing six more to reach eighth place. Holds 14 career blocks (eighth), needing three to move into the top five.
