2 2 THE CHAMPIONSHIPS Nine-Time Champs The program has won nine of the last 12 WWPA titles Overall The Lions claimed their ninth Western Water Polo Association title since 2001 thanks to a 7-6 win over host UC San Diego at the 2012 WWPA Championships. The Lions went on to their ninth NCAA Women s Water Polo Championships and placed fifth after wins over Pomona-Pitzer and 10th-ranked Princeton. The Lions finished on the season, giving them their 12th straight 20-win season. Goalie Elise Ponce made 14 saves in the WWPA title game and was named tournament MVP, adding to her first-team all-conference selection. Since the Lions won their first title in 2001, the Lions are all-time against the current members of the WWPA and are 39-5 all-time in the WWPA tournament. Senior captain Casey Flacks was named the WWPA Player of the Year and first-team all-conference. She is the 10th different Lion to earn the league s top honor since Alexandra Honny finished the season with 88 goals on the season, ranked third all-time in LMU history. She was a first-team All-WWPA and firstteam WWPA All-Tournament selection. All told the Lions had seven members on the league s postseason honors list, including Kimberly Benedetti, Erin Manke, Mackenzie Beck and Laura Lopez. Beck was also first-team WWPA All-Tournament thanks in large part to four goals in the WWPA title game. WWPA Championship - La Jolla, CA 4/27 Quarterfinals: #1 LMU 14, #8 Colorado St. 4 4/28 Semifinals: #1 LMU 13, #4 CS East Bay 5 4/29 Championship: #1 LMU 7, #2 UC San DIego 6 NCAA Championship - San Diego, CA 5/11 National Quarterfinals: #4 UC Irvine 8, #5 LMU 7 5/12 Consolation Semifinals: #5 LMU 12, #8 Pomona-Pitzer 2 5/13 Fifth Place Game: #5 LMU 15, #6 Princeton Overall Under first-year Head Coach Kyle Witt, the Lions ran their upbeaten streak against WWPA foes to 24 with three wins in the WWPA Championships hosted by Cal State Bakersfield to win their eighth title in 10 years. The Lions offense paced the attack, setting the record with 50 goals in the three games, including a title game record in the win over UCSD. The win advanced them to their eighth National Collegiate Women s Water Polo Championship, where they drew five-time defending champion and No. 1 ranked UCLA in the first round. Led by 11 saves from freshman goalie Kristine Cato, LMU would claim one of its biggest wins in program history, defeating the Bruins for the first time in 15 tries, 5-4. It was the first-ever win over a top-ranked opponent and In the process, they become the lowest seed (No. 6) to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA tournament, which expanded to an eight-team tournament in The Lions would fall, 10-6, in a the semifinals to eventual national champion USC. LMU would finish the season ranked fourth in the nation by the final coaches poll, the highest final season ranking since finishing 2004 at No. 2. Anne Scott became the eighth Lion to earn WWPA Player of the Year honors and for the first time in program history, five players were named All-American. Senior Nicole Hughes set the all-time record for goals in a career (320), season (129) and game (8) on the year. She would go on to become the seventh Lion to earn WWPA Player of the Year honors. The Lions cruised through the first two rounds of the WWPA championships and then defeated host Santa Clara in their new pool, 8-4, to reclaim the title, their seventh in nine years. With the title, the Lions earned the WWPA s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament for the seventh time. They would open with Hawaii, and after a tight first half, the size of Hawaii helped them pull away in the fourth quarter for a 11-7 win. The Lions would go on to finish fifth. Hughes, along with Anne Scott, Diana Romero and Casey Flacks would earn All-America honors. WWPA Championship - Santa Clara, CA 04/27 Quarterfinals: #1 LMU 10, #9 CS Monterey Bay 4 04/28 Semifinals: #1 LMU 13, #5 Sonoma St. 6 04/29 Championship: #1 LMU 8, #3 Santa Clara 4 NCAA Championship - College Park, Mary. 5/8 National Quarterfinals: #4 Hawaii 11, #5 LMU 7 5/9 Consolation Semifinals: #5 LMU 12, #8 Cal Lutheran 6 5/10 Consolation Final: #6 Michigan 11, #5 LMU Overall The Lions entered the 2007 WWPA Championships as the No. 2 seed and opened with a 19-2 win over Cal State East Bay and then posted a come-frombehind 5-4 win over Santa Clara. Dora Szabolcsi scored with 13 seconds remaining in regulation to complete a four-goal fourth quarter that saw LMU erase a 4-1 deficit to advance. In the title game, Nicole Hughes scored with 1:48 remaining in the first overtime to lift the Lions to a 6-5 overtime win against UC Davis. The Lions were given the No. 5 seed in the 2007 National Collegiate Women s Water polo Championship where they dropped a heartbreaker to San Diego State, They would go on to finish fifth. In the first year the National Collegiate Women s Water Polo Championship increased to an eight-team format, the Lions earned a fifth place finish in the 2005 NCAA tournament, earning wins of 16-4 over Wagner and 10-5 over No. 8 Michigan. LMU fell to fourth-ranked Hawaii in the first round. The Lions have earned a win in every NCAA tournament since it began in Goalie Rachel Riddell was named the 2005 WWPA Player of the Year and was joined by Stacia Peterson as All-Americans. WWPA Championship - Davis, CA 04/29 Quarterfinals: #1 LMU 19, #8 Chapman 5 04/30 Semifinals: #1 LMU 9, #4 Santa Clara 3 5/1 Championship: #1 LMU 8, #2 UC Davis 4 NCAA Championship - Ann Arbor, MI 5/13 National Quarterfinals: #4 Hawaii 12, #5 LMU 8 5/14 Consolation Semifinals: #5 LMU 16, #8 Wagner 4 5/15 Consolation Finals: #5 LMU 10, #6 Michigan Overall The Lions earned a 5-4 win over second ranked Stanford in the semifinals of the 2004 NCAA Women s Water Polo Championship to advance to the national title game. It was the first time any LMU team in more than 90 years of intercollegiate sports, played in a title game sponsored by the NCAA. The Lions went on to drop a heartbreaker to USC, 10-8, to finish second. The Lions advanced to the NCAA tournament thanks to their fourth straight WWPA title, earning a 7-3 win at the Burns Center on April 25. The Lions defeated Chapman 18-2 in the first round and then Cal State Bakersfield 16-8 in the semifinals to advance. Devon Wright earned WWPA Player of the Year honors while Head Coach John Loughran claimed his fourth straight Coach of the Year title. Teresa Guidi became the first women s water polo player to earn first-team All-American honors while Devon Wright was named WWPA Player of the Year. The Lions finished ranked No. 2 in the final national coaches poll, the highest end-of-theyear finish by any LMU program. WWPA Championship - Los Angeles, CA 04/27 Quarterfinals: #1 LMU 18, #8 Chapman 2 04/28 Semifinals: #1 LMU 16, #4 CS Bakersfield 8 04/29 Championship: #1 LMU 7, #2 UC San Diego 3 NCAA Championship - Stanford, CA 5/8 National Semifinals: #3 LMU 5, #2 Stanford 4 5/9 National Championship: #1 USC 10, #3 LMU Overall The Lions used a 13-game winning streak towards the end of the regular season to storm their way to the program s third straight WWPA crown. LMU defeated rival UC San Diego 8-6 in the title game on April 27. They would earn the conference s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, taking on UCLA for the third straight year in the semifinals. The Lions fell 8-2 but rebounded to defeat Indiana in the consolation game, 5-2, to take home third place honors. A pair of freshmen, goalie Rachel Riddell and Katie Hicks powered the Lions, as both earned All-America honors. Junior Teresa Guidi was named WWPA Player of the Year. WWPA Championship - Bakersfield, CA 04/25 Quarterfinals: #1 LMU 17, #8 CS East Bay 3 04/26 Semifinals: #1 LMU 15, #4 CS Bakersfield 6 04/27 Championship: #1 LMU 8, #3 UC San Diego 6 NCAA Championship - La Jolla, CA 5/10 National Semifinals: #2 UCLA 8, #3 LMU 2 5/11 Consolation Final: #3 LMU 5, #4 Indiana Overall In what would be the first of three straight meetings, the Lions took on UC San Diego in the title game of the WWPA Tournament. The Lions earned an 8-4 victory over the Tritons, earning their second straight automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Lions defeated both Chapman and Santa Clara 15-1 to adavance to the title game. Goalie Devon Courtney was the defensive leader for the Lions, earning WWPA Player of the Year honors and allowing just six goals in the WWPA tournament. The Lions would fall to UCLA in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament 11-2 and then rebounded to defeat Michigan 6-5 in the consolation game. WWPA Championship - Santa Cruz, CA 04/26 Quarterfinals: #1 LMU 15, #8 Chapman 1 04/27 Semifinals: #1 LMU 15, #5 Santa Clara 1 04/28 Championship: #1 LMU 8, #3 UC San Diego 4 NCAA Championship - Los Angeles, CA 5/10 National Semifinals: #1 UCLA 11, #4 LMU 2 5/11 Consolation Finals: #4 LMU 6, #3 Michigan Overall The Lions finished with the program s first 20- win season and its first-ever WWPA title thanks to a 7-6 win over UC Davis in the championship game. LMU s all-time leading scorer Lucy Windes powered the offense with 58 goals to earn WWPA Player of the Year honors. Junior Devon Courtney became one of the nation s top goalies, leading the Lions defense. LMU held opponents to a program record low in goals with just 123.
