The redshirt freshman, the youngest member of the 2000 United States Olympic Water Polo Team, opened his collegiate career with four goals to lead top-ranked Stanford to a season-opening 11-3 victory over UC Davis. Azevedo, who is considered one of the world's great water polo players, even though he is only 18 years old, scored Stanford's first goal of the season at 5:20 of the first period. Azevedo then added a goal in each of the next three periods. Brian Darrow and Mark Amott each added two goals for the Cardinal, coached by Dante Dettamanti, who is retiring after the 2001 season. Dettamanti is in his 25th year at Stanford. Peter Hudnut scored three goals, while Tony Azevedo and Jeff Nesmith each scored two goals in Stanford's second period outburst as the Cardinal led 7-2 at intermission. The Cardinal extended its lead to 10-3 after three periods, thanks to goals by Azevedo, Pasi Dutton and Brian Darrow. The game was tied three times before the Cardinal took the lead for good at 2:46 of the third period on Nesmith's second goal of the game. Peter Hudnut added an insurance goal at 1:56 of the third period. The upset was Stanford's first loss of the year. Golden Bear senior Spencer Dornin got the scoring started with a goal just over two minutes into the game. Stanford junior Jeff Guyman rallied with a goal at 4:43 in the second period off a deep pass from goalkeeper Nick Ellis. California then tacked on two goals by Greg Panawek and Dornin to make the halftime score 3-1. Joe Kaiser chalked up one more goal in the game for the Golden Bears, just over a minute into the third quarter. The Cal defense was sturdy and held the Stanford offense to just one goal in the first three periods. Cal goalie Russell Bernstein energized his team with 13 saves in the game. Azevedo did not relent, though, and put up two more goals in the fourth quarter to cut the Cal lead to one with three minutes to play. Stanford was unable to capitalize on 6-on-5 possessions (0-9) throughout the match and Cal's defense was strong limiting the Cardinal to three goals on 31 shots. 7 November 25 at MPSF Tournament - Stanford 7, California 5 Top-ranked Stanford defeated California, 7-5, to claim the MPSF Tournament Championship and an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships at Stanford on Dec Tony Azevedo's penalty shot in the closing seconds iced the game for the Cardinal. Azevedo scored three times. With Stanford leading 2-1 at halftime, the Cardinal outscored the Golden Bears, 3-1, in the third period. But Cal fought back and with 21 seconds remaining, Spencer Dornin scored to cut the Stanford margin to one goal, 6-5. Attempting to retrieve the ball, Golden Bear head coach Peter Asch sent an extra man into the pool with eight seconds remaining, drawing a four-meter penalty shot. Azevedo tossed the ball into the net to give the Cardinal the two-goal win.
