3 Stanford Water Polo 2007 Season Michael Bury Forrest Schwartz Stanford, Ca After losing two All- Americans in Peter Varellas and Thomas Hopkins, the 2006 season saw something of a youth movement for the Stanford men s water polo team. Three of the team s top four scorers were freshmen or sophomores, and the Cardinal regularly played up to nine underclassmen. While Stanford failed to make the NCAA championship game for the first time in five years, the season was anything but a failure. The Cardinal still won 17 games en route to a fourth overall ranking in the final national poll. With as much young talent as there is on the roster, the future is certainly bright for head coach John Vargas squad. I was happy with how we performed last year, being so young. said Vargas, who has now amassed 106 victories against just 31 losses (.773) in his five years at Stanford. This year, the Cardinal will still be young, but they expect to be back challenging for a national title. Stanford returns all but three players from last year s squad, but replacing the graduating seniors will again be a tall task. Vargas must now find production to fill in for last year s leading scorer Tyler Drake, and twotime All-American J.J. Garton. A challenge that we face this year is replacing the experience of JJ and Tyler, who both played in 3 NCAA Championship game, said Vargas. Fortunately for Stanford, replacements are at the ready. To start, the Cardinal return three players who combined to score 100 of Stanford s 244 goals in junior Will Hindle-Katel and sophomore twins Drac and Janson Wigo. The Wigos, whose older brother Wolf was a four-time All-American at Stanford and a member of three Olympic teams, came into their freshman season with high expectations. They did not disappoint. Drac (35 goals) was named newcomer of the year in the highly competitive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, and Janson (33 goals) was a third team all-conference performer. Both were named All-Americans. I was very happy with how well they played last year, said Vargas. They played a significant role in our team s success. Stanford will need other players to step up in the absence of Drake and Garton, and Vargas is confident that they will. There s no question Sage Wright and Ryan McCarthy are going to have a big impact on our team this year, said Vargas. I consider Sage one of the top drivers in the country. I think he will fill in quite well for Tyler Drake. Vargas expects Garton s production (28 goals) to be replaced by the talented trio of seniors Forrest Schwartz, Peter Finlayson, Ryan Fortune, and redshirt sophomore Ryan McCarthy. The 2007 Cardinal will feature five seniors in Schwartz, Finlayson, Fortune, Michael Bury and goalkeeper Sandy Hohener. The seniors will anchor Stanford s stout defense. The roles of our seniors are on defense more than anything else, said Vargas. They will add a lot of stability to the team. And as all coaches say, defense wins games. That defense will shine if Hohener and junior Jimmie Sandman combine to play as well as they did sharing goalkeeping duties in As the backbone of the defense, the talented duo combined for 234 saves last season ago. Vargas hopes the offense will carry the team to a few victories as well. With Hindle- Katel and the Wigos back in the mix, and the expected increased production from Sage Wright and Ryan McCarthy, the Cardinal should have plenty of ways to score. Our success on offense will not be measured by who scores, but in terms of working together, said Vargas. Our teamwork will depend on unselfishness, everyone understanding their roles and playing their role at a consistently high level every time we enter the water. The Cardinal will also have to make room for another stellar class that includes seven excellent freshmen. Jeffrey Schwimer (Harvard Westlake), Kevin May (The Bishops) and Alex Pulido (The Bishops) will pay instant dividends for Vargas. I m really happy with how Jeffrey has come along in his off-season, said Vargas. I think he s going to make an impact right away on our team. Kevin May and Alex Pulido have also done a great job and continued to improve. The other freshmen are Sam Finlayson (San Ramon), Eric Clapper (Coronado), Brian Pingree (Harvard Westlake) and Ryan Kent (Corona Del Mar). These freshmen, along with returning players like Chris Jacobson, Steven Wright, Andrew Drake, Will Smith and Cody Wiesen should give the Cardinal excellent depth. This will be the first year we ll have depth since I ve been coaching at Stanford. said Vargas. As is the case every season, Stanford faces a rigorous slate of games in As a member of the tough MPSF, the Cardinal will host defending NCAA champion California (11/16), as well as visit runner-up USC (10/6). Stanford will also host the NCAA championship contests (12/1-12/2). In 2007, the Cardinal will once again be a young team, but they are not using their youth as an excuse. We have had a great off season training program, said Vargas. The guys understand that striving for excellence is the gradual result of them always working to be better, always improving, never being satisfied and doing everything to the best of their abilities. Vargas expects his program to be just as competitive as it always has been. We re still young, but the expectations are very high S t a n f o r d W a t e r P o l o

4 Coaching Staff John Vargas Head Coach John Vargas is no stranger to success at Stanford University. In his five seasons as head coach of the Stanford men s water polo program, the Cardinal has reached the NCAA championship game four times. In his first season in 2002, Vargas led the Cardinal to the NCAA title. His record at Stanford is (.773) against the top collegiate competition in the country. Last year in leading Stanford to a 17-9 record, the Cardinal finished fourth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, and fourth in the final national poll. Vargas came to The Farm from Southern California where he was the head coach for the boy s water polo and swim program at Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach. During his tenure at Corona Del Mar, Vargas teams captured four Southern Section CIF 4A championships (1985, 1987, 1988, 1989) and three Southern Section Division II championships (1999, 2000, 2001). Vargas was the head coach of the United States Men s National Team ( ). During his tenure the National Team took first or second place six times at national and international tournaments (1st: 1999 Pan-American Games, 1998 United States Cup, 1997 World FINA Cup; 2nd: 2000 UPS Cup, 1999 United States Cup, 1997 United States Cup). The team finished sixth at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia where he coached former Stanford standout and four-time All-American Wolf Wigo and four-time Stanford National Player of the Year Tony Azevedo. Vargas also served as an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team from before being named head coach. He became the fourth head coach in the history of the program (Jim Gaughran from , Art Lambert from , Dante Dettamanti from ). Vargas graduated from UC Irvine with a degree in Social Science. As a four-year letterman with the Anteater varsity, Vargas helped lead the team to an undefeated 1982 season and the NCAA title. Vargas was a two-time All-American (1981, 1982). Vargas continued his playing career after leaving UC Irvine with the U.S. National Team. During his ten year career with the team, the U.S. finished no lower than fifth place in eight national and international championships including first place at the 1991 World FINA Cup in Barcelona and second place at the 1983 World University Games in Edmonton, the 1986 Goodwill Games in Moscow, and the 1991 Pan Am Games in Cuba. As a member of the 1992 United States Olympic Team, Vargas helped lead the Americans to a fourth place finish in Barcelona. Vargas and his wife, Dawn, currently live in Cupertino. Jonathan Barnea Assistant Coach Jonathan Barnea, a 2002 graduate of UC Santa Barbara, enters his second season with the Stanford Men s Varsity Water Polo team as the assistant coach. He joins John Vargas who is beginning his sixth season as the head coach of the Cardinal program. Barnea joined the men s water polo team after spending three years as the head coach for the Palo Alto High School boys water polo team and the Stanford Water Polo Foundation s Boys 14 and Under team. Barnea led the Palo Alto High School team to the Quarterfinals of the Division II CIF-CCS tournament and a third place finish in the SCVAL DeAnza Division in Barnea s 14 and Under Stanford Foundation team took second place in the Speedo Cup Nationals in both 2003 and 2004, and finished third at the National Junior Olympics in Barnea also served as an assistant coach for the Stanford Water Polo Foundation High School Boys team. Barnea was the head coach for the Pacific Zone Development Team in 2004 and 2005, leading that team to a National Age Group Championship in 2004 and a second-place showing at the National Age Group Championships in During the same years, Barnea served as an assistant coach to the United States National Development Team S t a n f o r d W a t e r P o l o

As the Club s name implied, membership dues were one dollar per month and the word tiny was added to emphasize the modest amount and to honor head football coach, Claude Tiny Thornhill. The Club later shortened its name to the Stanford Buck Club and revised its initial membership dues requirement. Until the mid-1970 s, there were no athletic scholarships for women, nor was there any fundraising organization devoted to this purpose. To accomplish the task of raising scholarship funds for women, the Cardinal Club was formed in Under the guidance of the Buck and Cardinal Club leadership, a merged Buck/Cardinal Club was formed in 1987 to raise funds for both men s and women s athletic scholarships. The new volunteer organization was built on the fine Buck and Cardinal Club traditions that served both organizations well. In 2007, the Stanford Athletic Department provided full operating budgets to all 35 varsity sports. These budgets include all of the components necessary for our programs to compete at the Division I level. Because of this, none of our varsity sports will be required to fundraise for their basic operating budgets effective fiscal year 2008 (September 1, 2007). These new budgets will be funded in large part by a more robust Buck/Cardinal Club, enabling our head coaches and their staffs to focus their time and energy on coaching and recruiting instead of fundraising for basic operating budgets. Our donors will receive Buck/Cardinal Club benefits commensurate with their generosity. Under the new Stanford Athletics annual giving program, the Buck/Cardinal Club will not only include its great scholarship tradition, but also assist the department s coaches and staff in providing the resources needed to compete at the highest level of NCAA Division I athletics. Instead of receiving solicitations from individual sports, donors and friends of Stanford Athletics will now receive a single solicitation from the Buck/Cardinal Club. By giving a gift to the Buck/ Cardinal Club, the donor is giving both their favorite sport, and all of Stanford s varsity sports, the budget resources they need. Donors will also have the opportunity to let us know which sports are their favorites at the time of the donation, and sports will keep in touch with donors who specify interest in that specific program. For more information on the Buck/Cardinal Club and giving to Stanford Athletics, please call (650) or visit gostanford.com/giving.
