Fourth/2011 Highest Tournament Finish... Fourth/2010 Scouting Bucknell The Bucknell Bison kick off their 2013 season this weekend, first facing the Rams. Bucknell ended its 2012 campaign with a record of 15-24, finishing fourth in the six-team Southern Conference. Junior Jalianne Valdes returns as a utility player who racked up a team-leading 50 steals and 15 blocks, in addition to more than 60 goals, which ranked second on the team in Sophomore Taylor Barnett also adds intimidating depth to the Bucknell lineup, leading the Bison in ejections drawn, shots taken and goals scored a year ago. The Rams are 1-2 all-time against the Bison, defeating Bucknell a year ago, CSU s first win of the season at that point. In the 9-7 victory, Shelby Schaefer had a hat trick while Melissa Fisher made 15 stops in net. Scouting Brown Like Bucknell, the Brown Bears, who are ranked No. 20 in the most recent poll, will begin their season this weekend, hosting their annual tournament. In 2012, the Bears went 21-17, including a 12-9 victory over the Rams. Despite being tied at 5-5 at the half, CSU allowed four goals in the third period. Again, Schaefer was an offensive threat, scoring twice. As a freshman, Madison Pepper helped Brown to a 20-win season, leading her team in goals and ejections drawn. The Bears finished fourth in the CWPA Eastern Championship. CSU is 1-1 against Brown in its history, defeating the Bears, 11-8, in Scouting St. Francis The Terriers finished 2012 with a disappointing 6-14 record. Then-senior Paloma Szivos scored nearly one-third of the team s goals, but her place has been filled nicely with current senior Regina Toth, who ranked second on the team in goals and points. Toth was named to the All-MAAC first team in The Rams and Terriers have never faced each other before. Scouting Wagner After a second-place finish in the MAAC standings a year ago, the Wagner Seahawks are looking for another 20- win campaign in Wagner went in 2012, led by Co-Defensive Player of the Year Laura Karbach, who is now a senior captain and starting goalie. Karbach ranked second in the conference with 8.94 saves per game. The Rams and Seahawks have split the prior two matchups, most recently a 6-3 CSU win in The nine combined points is tied for the sixth-fewest in CSU history, and the three goals allowed is tied for eighth. Scouting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps The Athenas are the only other team besides CSU to enter play this weekend with competition under their belt. CMS is 0-3, however, falling to UCLA and UC San Diego two ranked teams and Concordia. The Athenas went in 2012, but are ranked No. 2 in the CWPA Division III poll. Junior utility Candance Fillppelli and junior attacker Alex Toohey both All-Americans return ready to lead CMS. CSU is 3-0 all-time against CMS, winning in 2005, 2008 and National attention Despite dropping its first four contests of the year all to top-14 teams and being idle for the three weeks since, CSU received one vote in the CWPA Women s Varsity National Top 20 poll for the second consecutive week on Wednesday. The Rams received votes on five occasions last year, cracking the top-20 for the first time in program history on Jan. 25. The Rams are tied for 22nd nationally, and are one of 27 teams receiving at least one vote. Level competition The Rams will again face one of the most challenging schedules in the nation, but they have a great opportunity in front of them this weekend. Of CSU s five opponents in the Brown Invite, just two had winning records in 2012, and the combined record of the five teams was (.461). What s more, CSU is 6-4 in head-to-head matchups against this weekend s foes. However, if the season s opening weekend is any indication, Barott is ready to take her game to the next level. In four games, the sophomore from Ypsilanti, Mich., scored nine goals, in addition to 18 ejections drawn. Despite being just February, Barott needs just 14 more drawn ejections drawn to reach the top-10 in single-season history, and 42 to take the school s top spot. On a roll Shelby Schaefer scored in 13 straight games from March 10 through the first game of April 15 last year, tying Kallie Berry s 2011 mark for second all-time and just one away from the program record. Entering the 2013 season, she had scored in nine consecutive contests, and after goals in each game of the Michigan Kick-Off, she has reached her personal best and is one away from tying Laurien White s program mark that she set in With two wins this weekend, the Colorado State women s water polo team will pick up the 100th victory in program history. The sport, which began during the 2005 season, is (.384) in eight-plus seasons. While the Rams were unable to come with a victory, Moody saw several bright spots. We knew coming in it was going to be a tough battle, Moody said. In the end of the day, it s a difficult tournament. We played better in this tournament this year than we did last year, which I think will show that we re making strides in the right direction. Snapping a losing streak Dating back to the final game of 2012, CSU has now lost five consecutive contests, tied for the seventh-longest stretch in program history. CSU had two streaks of six losses in Scheduling tough opponents Moody is known to piece together tough schedules, noting that more than half of his team s opponents over the past two seasons have been against teams ranked at some point in the Women s Varsity Top 20 poll. This season is no different, as 11 of CSU s 24 schedule games are against teams currently ranked. CSU s tournament at Santa Clara (April 6-7) has not announced the field yet. Fourth in the WWPA For the second consecutive season, CSU has been picked by the WWPA coaches to finish fourth in the league. It ties the highest-ever preseason seed. We went into the WWPA Championships last year seeded No. 8, so to have us at No. 4, I m a little bit surprised, Moody said. I know the talent that we have, and what we re capable of doing, but for others to see that as well, that feels good. Finishing ahead of CSU in the preseason poll was Loyola Marymount (49 points), UC San Diego (43) and Santa Clara (36). Loyola Marymount and UC San Diego are currently ranked. The bottom half of the poll includes Cal State East Bay (24), Sonoma State (20), Cal State Monterey Bay (15) and Cal State San Bernardino (7). Double trouble Going into camp a year ago, Moody knew he had two viable options for goalie. Now, more than a year later, it remains the same, as Moody expects both Melissa Fisher, a senior, and Michelle Slagle, a junior, to split time in net. In the opening weekend, Slagle played 2.5 games, compared to Fisher s 1.5. Fisher holds three of CSU s top seven single-season saves totals, while Slagle, who transferred to CSU from Loyola Marymount, tied a single-game saves record with 16 stops at Michigan (Jan. 21, 2012). She should reach that midway through this season, needing 37 more saves. Block and assist party With four field blocks to close the regular season, the Rams established a new program record, surpassing their 2010 mark of 61 swats, the first year water polo recorded field blocks as a stat. CSU finished 2012 with 72 stuffs, led by Caroline Young s 23, a new single-season best. Additionally in 2012, the Rams set a program record for assists, with three players Young, Schaefer and Kallie Berry breaking CSU s single-season assists record. As a team, CSU finished with 183 helpers, 16 more than the previous mark, which was set in New aquatic center For seven years, EPIC had been home to the Colorado State water polo team. But beginning in 2012, the Rams relocated to the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center (VMAC), a new facility located in Thornton, Colo. I think it s a great opportunity for the state of Colorado, Moody said. We re more centrally located there. I hope to bring a good fan base from the Denver and Boulder areas. It also allows the Rams to play their home games in a regulation water polo pool 25 meters in length by 20 meters in width, and at least seven meters deep for the first time. The VMAC is a $19.5-million facility that features a 765,000-gallon, 50-meter Olympic-size pool. The facility opened two years ago. L, 3 Career updates Several Rams are within reach, or are approaching, career statistical records for their performance in the pool: Final season of water polo at CSU The water polo program was hit with some hard news on Jan. 24, as it was announced that Colorado State University will discontinue the sponsorship of the sport after the completion of this season. Water polo, in its ninth season, was CSU s newest sport until CSU announced that it will add women s soccer in place of water polo. While there was obvious shock and disappointment, Moody believes that the announcement can bring his team together. It was obviously very emotional and very difficult, but we got right back to work and stayed focus on our routine, Moody said. We re in a good position mentally, physically and emotionally. We understand that we have a job to do and goals to accomplish, and that next year has no bearing on this season highlights The program received its first-ever national ranking, earning the No. 20 spot in the Women s Varsity Top 20 poll on Jan. 25. CSU earned three All-WWPA honors, including Kallie Berry (third team), Caroline Young (honorable mention) and Kelcy Barott (freshman). Four players earned Academic recognition from the WWPA and ACWPC: Kallie Berry, Michelle Slagle, Stephanie Weed and Caroline Young. As a team, CSU was one of 13 schools to have a cumulative grade-point average above 3.0. It marked the first season played in the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center, CSU s new home facility and state-ofthe-art pool in Thornton, Colo. The Rams recorded two victories in the WWPA Championships, securing the No. 6 spot after entering seeded eighth. There, the Rams will face a team consisting of the top club players from the University of Colorado and University of Denver club teams. The annual game began last year with CSU defeating the Colorado All-Stars, Kelcy Barott Now has 45 career ejections drawn, moving her into the top 10 and into an eighth-place tie. She needs six more to reach seventh. Her 18 ejections drawn in the opening weekend this season put her 14 shy of reaching the top 10. She also recorded her ninth career block, moving her into a 10th-place tie. Now owns the top two single-game ejections drawn records with eight at Michigan (Jan. 19) and seven vs. San Jose State (Jan. 20).
