3 From the Miprepzone: BASKETBALL GIRLS MONDAY NIGHT QuickstartpushesWaterfordMottpastTroyW/PHOTOGALLERY By DREW WATERFORD A strong finish is often emphasized in sports, but a fast start can be just as important. Waterford Mott proved that on Monday in the Class A district opener at Waterford Kettering when it took a 14-4 lead on Troy after one quarter and then basically played the Colts even from there to pick up a victory. The Corsairs (15-6) were aided by some strong shooting in the openin g half, hitting a total of 4 3- pointers to allow them to jump out early on Troy (13-8). (Mott) was able to knock down some shots and that was the difference in the first half, Troy coach Simon Bato said. That really ended up being the difference in the game. Troy was able to cut the deficit down to six in the second quarter, but Mott answered with a 3-pointer from Toni Sarkesian and a 3-point play from senior Vanessa Bolling to push the lead to 12 points at Troy is a really good team and they re really scrappy. They don t quite and I knew when they were down that they were going to make a run, Waterford Mott coach Michelle Sklar said. We just needed to keep playing and keep focusing on defense. Mott would take a lead into the fourth quarter, but the Colts once again made it interesting. Troy cut the lead to early in the period, but senior point guard Amy Cooperrider stepped up for the Corsairs, picking up a pair of assists to put the game out of reach. We were never able to turn that corner, Bato said. Every time we cut it to six points, Mott came out and answered. Unfortunately, we just couldn t get closer than that. But, then again, the start wasn t what anyone was expecting. Wednesday s Class A district semifinal between the Corsairs and Pontiac was started after a 15-minute delay as Pontiac was late in their arrival to Waterford Kettering High School. After the delay, the Corsairs were slow to get going, leading by just two after the first quarter and by eight at halftime, but Mott got it together in the second half and flew past the Phoenix, We talked in the locker room and came out strong in the second half, Sklar said. We played with intensity and showed ourselves to be the team we are. In the opening eight minutes, Mott struggled to find an offensive flow while allowing Pontiac to stick around. The Corsairs led 6-4 after one, but quickly built the lead to 17-4 in the second quarter by scoring the first 11 points. However, the Phoenix rallied, tallying the final five points of the period thanks to a 3-pointer from Aniya Erkins to make it 17-9 at the break. We weren t mentally ready to play, Sklar said of her team. Obviously the delay didn t help, but the kids need to be focused and be ready when they step on the floor whether there was a delay or not. Our intensity on defense wasn t there and we were missing a lot of open shots. Mott turned to its press to start the third quarter and Pontiac didn t have an answer. The Corsairs held the Phoenix scoreless in the period and took a 35-9 lead into the fourth. The final frame was more of the same as the Corsairs defensive pressure limited Pontiac to just four points. Mott had a balanced offensive attack with nine different players scoring. Morgan Fuerst led the charge with 10 points while Monica Reiche had nine and Mikayla Gean had seven. Erkins led Pontiac with five points. (Cont d) NEXT GAME TONIGHT KETTERING... VS.
