WINNING RECORD: Since moving up to the NCAA Division I ranks at the start of the season, the Ja ck rabbit women s baskeball team has posted a winning record against D-I opponents. Heading into Monday s game at Idaho State, SDSU has compiled a mark versus D-I opposition.the matchup with Idaho State marks the first time SDSU has played a Big Sky Conference opponent since making the jump to Division I. IN T R A N S I T I O N : The season marks the second of a four- year transition process toward reclassification of the Ja ck rabbit athletics program from NCAA Division II to full Division I status. By meeting annual criteria outlined by the NCAA, SDSU will be eligible for N C A A postseason competition during the season. Starting this season, t h e Ja ck rabbit women s basketball program is eligible for a postseason berth in the Wo m e n s NIT. LIFE AS AN INDEPENDENT: The Ja ck ra b b i t s, who are in search of conference affiliation, will play an independent schedule for the second year in a row. LAST WEEK: The Ja ck rabbits opened their road trip with losses at Colorado and Long Beach State. C o l o rado 64, SDSU 60 C o l o rado limited South Dakota State to a season-low 23 percent shooting effort as the Ja ck rabbit women s basketball team dropped its second consecutive game, , D e c. 2 8 at the Coors Events Center. SDSU dropped to 7-5 ove ra l l, while the Buffaloes improved to 5-6. The Ja ck rabbits built an early five-point lead on three occasions, the last at on a Megan Vogel three-pointer with 9:49 remaining in the first half.vogel led SDSU with 18 points and eight rebounds. C o l o rado outscored the Ja ck rabbits 9-4 the rest of the first half as the teams went into intermission deadlocked at 21. In the second half, the Buffaloes went on a 9-0 run to go up with 10:25 remaini n g. SDSU countered with an 8-0 run to pull to within one at following back - t o - b a ck three-pointers by Natalie Carda and Heather Sieler. Carda contributed a career- h i g h 11 points. H o w eve r, C o l o ra d o s Yari Escalera nailed a three-pointer on its next possession and pulled away down the stretch.the Buffaloes sealed the game at the line, making 16-of-17 free throw attempts in the second half and 23-of-27 for the game, 85.2 percent. The Ja ck rabbits were also solid at the free throw line, making 11-of-13 tries for 84.6 p e r c e n t, but managed just 16-of-69 shooting from the field for 23.2 percent. SDSU fared slightly better from behind the arc at 7-of-25, 28 percent. CU was 17-of-46 from the f i e l d, 37 percent, including 7-of-19 on threes, 36.8 percent. Jasmina Ilic led all scorers with 19 points for the Buffaloes. Ja ckie McFarland was a force inside with 15 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocked shots. A 12-0 Long Beach run put the Ja cks down before SDSU rallied to regain the lead at on a three-pointer by Andrea Ve r d e g a n. Long Beach got a pair of free throws from Crystal McCutcheon for a lead, b u t SDSU went back on top on a pair of free throws by Megan Vogel with 57 seconds left. After Fi g u e r o a s basket, with 41 seconds left, SDSU missed a shot and Long Beach r e b o u n d e d, setting the stage for the free throws by Connors. Vo g e l s three point attempt just before the buzzer missed. Long Beach State improved to 7-4 and gave coach Mary Hegarty her 200th career win. LBSU out-shot SDSU 34.9 percent (22-of-63) to 31.1 percent (19-of-61), had a rebound advantage and the Ja cks committed 23 turnove r s. Vogel led the Ja cks with 24 points but was the only SDSU player in double figures. Jennifer Warkenthein had nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Attendance LINEUP CHANGE: After using the same starting lineup for the first 11 games, c o a c h Aaron Johnston made a change at center in the Dec. 28 game at Colorado as sophomore C o u r t n ey Grimsrud earned her first career start in place of senior Christina Gilbert. Guards Heather Sieler and Andrea Verdegan and forwards Jennifer Warkenthien and Megan Vogel have started all 13 games for the Ja ck ra b b i t s. JACKS LOSE MECKLEY: SDSU will play the remainder of the season without the services of reserve forward Sarah Meckley, who was declared academically ineligible at the end of the fall semester. A sophomore, Meckley had come off the bench in all 11 games, averaging 5.0 points and 2.7 rebounds while playing 12.6 minutes per contest. TOUGH AT HOME: S D S U s home loss to Middle Tennessee State on Dec. 2 was a rarity during the Aaron Johnston era. In his six-plus seasons as Ja ck rabbit head coach, Johnston has led the Ja ck rabbits to a record at Frost Arena. Since the start of the season, SDSU has lost one home game each season, compiling a 58-5 home record during that span, including a 3-1 mark at Frost Arena this season. STRONG STA R T S : The Ja ck rabbits have played some of their best basketball of the season in the first halves of games. SDSU has trailed only twice at halftime this s e a s o n, losing both times in games to Middle Tennessee State and Long Beach State. When leading at the half, SDSU is 7-3, with losses at Dra k e, Southern Illinois and M a r q u e t t e.the Ja ck rabbits are 0-1 when tied at the half, as was the case Dec. 28 at C o l o ra d o. For the season, SDSU is outscoring its opponents in the first half. VOGEL REACHES 1,000: Jackrabbit junior Megan Vogel became the 25th player in SDSU women s basketball history to reach 1,000 career points, when she accomplished the feat Dec. 18 against Alabama. A 5-foot-11 forward from St. Peter, Minn.Vogel enters Monday s game with 1,057 career points, putting her 24th on the Jackrabbit career scoring list. Reaching the 1,000- point plateau late in the game against Alabama en route to tying her single-game career high with 26 points,vogel later passed former teammate Sarita DeBoer (1,003 points from ) for the 24th spot. In 74 career games, all of which she has started,vogel has averaged 14.3 points per contest. She is averaging a team-best 15.3 points per game this season after reaching double figures in 11 of 13 games, including the last five during which she is averaging 19 points per contest. SIELER CRACKS TOP 10s: Ja ck rabbit senior Heather Sieler enters the week ranked in the SDSU career top 10s in three different statistical categories. A guard from Huron, S. She stands 11 steals away from the third spot currently held by Lori Fi s h (258 steals from ). Sieler also moved up another spot on the career assists chart in recent weeks to eighth place. With 395 assists, she has moved past Karla Stevenson (368 assists from ) for eighth place and stands 18 away from passing Ann Just (412 assists from ) for seventh place. Finally, Sieler cracked the Jackrabbit career top 10 for three-point baskets during the season-opening weekend. With 122 three-pointers, she has passed Beth Ommen (107 three-pointers from ) for 10th place. Gwen Greiner (127 three-pointers from ) and Shannon Schlagel (127 three-pointers from ) are next on the list, in a tie for eighth place. In addition, Sieler could make a late run at the 1,000-point milestone. She comes into the week with 825 career points while starting all but one of the team s 109 games during her tenure at SDSU. After averaging 7.7 points per game her freshman through junior seasons, Sieler will have to average approximately 9.5 points per game this season to reach the milestone. She currently checks in with an average of 6.9 points per game. COACH AARON JOHNSTON: In his five-plus seasons as head coach of the South Dakota State University women s basketball team, Aaron Johnston has taken the Ja ck rabbit program to new and higher leve l s, leading SDSU to three consecutive NCAA Division II Elite Eight appeara n c e s, including the first national championship in the prog ra m s history during the season. During their championship run, which culminated with a victory over Northern K e n t u cky in the NCAA Division II championship game in St. J o s e p h, M o., the Ja ck ra b b i t s compiled a school-record 32 wins against just three losses. SDSU also earned a share of its f i r s t - ever North Central Conference title with a 14-2 record in league play. After leading SDSU to unprecedented success, Johnston was named the 2003 Molten/Women s Division II Bulletin Coach of the Ye a r. The Ja ck rabbits attained much of the same success in the season, earning a share of their second consecutive North Central Conference title and winning the North C e n t ral Regional for the third consecutive ye a r. SDSU finished the season with a 26-7 mark, falling to eventual national champion California (Pa.) in the first round of the N C A A Division II Elite Eight. Johnston leads the Ja ck rabbits into Monday s game with a career record of (.743 winning percentage). Currently second on the SDSU career victories list, J o h n s t o n s career totals have included a 13-2 mark (.867 winning percentage) in NCAA Division II postseason games. During the season, Johnston led a Ja ck rabbit squad which included just two seniors and nine freshmen to SDSU s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite E i g h t. The Ja ck rabbits compiled a 28-9 record, setting a then-school record for wins in a s e a s o n. Johnston spent the season as assistant coach under Nancy Neiber and coached the Ja ck rabbits to a 4-2 record in the final six games of the season as interim head coach as SDSU finished the season with a 19-8 ove rall record, 11-7 in NCC play. One of the Ja ck ra b b i t s victories was over second-ranked and eventual national runner- u p North Dakota State. When the interim label was removed from his title on June 30, , Johnston became the seventh head coach in the modern era of South Dakota State University women s bask e t b a l l, which began in In the season, his first full season as Ja ck rabbit head coach, Johnston led SDSU to a ove rall record.that mark included a North Central Conference record of 9-9, which earned the Ja ck rabbits a berth in the seven-team Wells Fa rgo Finals conference postseason tournament.
