2 HEAD COACH ANN CLIFTON Since coming to Villanova in 1997, head coach Ann Clifton has continually built upon the University's "Tradition of Excellence." Under Clifton's watch, the women's soccer program has reached new heights that have propelled the Wildcats into a position as a perennial national power. Now entering her ninth season on the Main Line, Clifton is just two wins shy of reaching 100 career victories. Already the program's all-time winningest coach, her career record stands at (.636) through eight seasons. Villanova enters the 2005 season with the momentum of four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. In 2003, Clifton led the Wildcats to the program's only Big East title and a berth in the Sweet 16. Villanova went on a surge late in the season to qualify for the conference tournament, and got by three ranked teams to win the title. The 2003 squad established a program-best with 15 wins and finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation. Clifton led the Wildcats to their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 2001, and the program continued on the path to national prominence the following year. Villanova won 14 games in 2002 and was given the honor of being one of the host seeds for the NCAA Tournament first and second rounds. The Wildcats finished the season with a record and were ranked as high as 14th in the nation during the season, the team's highest ranking ever. Villanova's ascent to the level the program is at today began with the first NCAA Tournament berth in The Wildcats went that season, and defeated the University of Pennsylvania 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Clifton's teams have had at least a.500 record in all eight of her seasons, including a winning record in each of the past six seasons. In 1999, the Wildcats compiled a 14-8 record, which established the mark for wins in a season at that time. Villanova also was 4-2 in regular season Big East competition, and hosted a conference tournament game for the first time ever. The squad turned its regular season success into a postseason title, as the Wildcats captured the ECAC Championship with shutout victories over Cornell and St. John's. Ninth-year head coach Ann Clifton enters the 2005 season with a career record of and has led the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past four seasons. Overall in her eight seasons, Clifton has led Villanova to the Big East Tournament seven times and postseason play five times. The Wildcats have gone (.650) in postseason play during that span. In addition to excellence on the field, Clifton has also steered the Villanova program to greatness off the field. Women's soccer student-athletes have been named to the Big East Academic All-Star team a total of 83 times during her tenure as head coach, and the team was a recipient of the NSCAA Team Academic Award six consecutive seasons. Clifton's teams have also been involved in a wide variety of community service projects. The Wildcats "Soccer on the Streets" program provides soccer equipment and clinics for underprivileged youths. The women's soccer team has also participated in the athletic department's Adopt-A-Family program as well as a Pen Pal Program with fifth and sixth graders. CLIFTON S CAREER HIGHLIGHTS Has led the Wildcats to four consecutive NCAA Tourmament berths Team has been nationally ranked in each of the past four seasons 2003 squad won school-record 15 games, captured the program s first-ever Big East title and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time The 2003 team was ranked No. 15 in the nation in the final Top 25 polls Villanova achieved highest-ever national ranking of No. 14 during the 2002 season Women s soccer program earned first-ever NCAA Tourmament berth in 2001 and defeated Pennsylvania 2-0 in a first-round game The Wildcats captured the 1999 ECAC Championship with a pair of shutout victories over Cornell and St. John s Villanova has reached the Big East Tournament in seven of Clifton s eight seasons on the Main Line Became the all-time winningest coach in Villanova women s soccer history with a win over Syracuse on Sept. 11, 2003 Currently ranks 37th in career winning percentage among active Division I women s soccer coaches Clifton s Wildcats won the NSCAA Team Academic Award each season from Clifton at Randolph H.S. WOMEN S SOCCER SUPPORT STAFF Brian Herr is beginning his third season with the women's soccer program in Herr works with the Wildcat goalkeepers at Villanova, and assists head coach Ann Clifton in all other aspects related to the team. During his time at Villanova, the Wildcats have had one of the top defensive units in the nation. Herr's work with the team's goalkeepers is one of the reasons that the defense has been so strong. In 2003, his first season with the team, Villanova set a schoolrecord and led the Big East with 16 shutouts. The team won a school-record 15 games, captured the program's only Big East title, and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. In 2004, Villanova racked up 14 more victories, including 10 shutouts, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Through Herr's first two years with the team, the Wildcats have shut out more than half (55%) of their opponents and maintained a 0.57 goalsagainst average. During his collegiate playing days, Herr was a standout goalkeeper at Drexel University. He earned All-League honors at Drexel twice and also left as the Dragons' all-time saves leader. 5 Over the past four seasons, the Villanova women s soccer program has established its place among the nation s elite programs. The Wildcats have reached the NCAA Tournament in each of the four seasons, including a Sweet 16 appearance in The program has also been consistently ranked in the nation s Top 25 polls. As the beginning of the 2005 season approaches, ninth-year head coach Ann Clifton is excited about the prospects for the current squad. While acknowledging the program s growth over the past four years, she is also eager to see Villanova move forward and reach the next level. Our roster is filled with players, both among the returnees and the newcomers, that have a tremendous amount of experience and know how to get the job done, Clifton said. I think this year s team has a chance to be as good as or better than any team that has worn the Villanova uniform. It isn t hard to see where Clifton s optimism comes from. The Wildcats return 18 letterwinners from the team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago. In addition, the team will get a boost from eight incoming freshmen, all of whom have substantial playing experience with some of the top club teams in the nation. I am very confident in this team s ability to once again be ranked in the Top 25 and to be one of the 64 teams that gets to the NCAA Tournament, Clifton said. Our players feel good about where the team is right now, and they are eager to continue stepping forward. Villanova s emergence as one of the nation s best programs would not have been possible without its traditionally stifling defense. The Wildcats allowed just 0.70 goals per game and posted 10 shutouts in Nearly the entire starting defensive unit is returning, and keeping the opposition off the scoreboard should again be one of the team s strengths SEASON PREVIEW The offensive end of the field is where there is room for improvement, and that is where the presence of the newcomers will be felt the most. Villanova has been shutout in each of its last 16 losses dating back to 2001, and will have to prove it can put the ball in the net in pressure situations. Junior goalkeeper Jillian Loyden We are young in spots, but I look forward to seeing where we are come the middle of September when conference play is getting into full swing, Clifton said. I think we will be with the top teams in the country. As time goes on, the growth and maturity of the team will only help us to get better. GOALKEEPER Over the past several years, Villanova has produced a long line of outstanding goalkeepers. The most recent star is junior Jillian Loyden (Vineland, N.J.), who anchors the team defense from her position in front of the net. Loyden made her collegiate debut last season and has grown into a consummate team leader. It is vital for any team to have a great leader in goal, and Jillian is that leader for us, Clifton said. She runs the defense both physically and verbally on the field, and she is capable of improving on the tremendous season she had last year. Loyden, who made her collegiate debut in 2004, was a second team All-Region selection by the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz. She also earned second team All-Big East accolades for a season in which she ranked 29th in the nation with a goals-against average. Loyden started all 22 games on the year, and posted eight shutouts. Playing backup roles in goal are sophomore Jamie Doehler (East Greenwich, R.I.) and freshman Leann Kania (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Doehler gained the notice of her coaches after having an outstanding spring season, and Kania will begin her collegiate career after winning a state cup championship in high school. DEFENSE Senior defender Laura Koch Senior Laura Koch (Blackwood, N.J.) is the key player on the back line for the Wildcats, who ranked 23rd in the nation in scoring defense and 46th in shutout percentage last season. Koch was named a first team All-Region performer by the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz, and garnered third team All-Big east honors. 5

6 2005 SEASON PREVIEW MIDFIELD Sophomore Melissa Murowski (Warren, N.J.) will play in the midfield as holding defenders. Murowski was a regular starter last season, and scored her first collegiate goal against Connecticut in the semifinals of the Big East Tournament. Melissa is an excellent technical player, Clifton said. She has great presence in the air and is developing into a great all-around player. Villanova has a chance to be dominant in the middle of the field, where freshman Erin Hardiman (Galloway, N.J.), junior Valerie Grow (Cumberland, R.I.) and senior Kelly Breslin (Medford, N.J.) are all dangerous offensive threats. Erin is the real deal, Clifton said. She is going to make an immediate impact both on our team and in the Big East. Valerie gives us great size in the midfield. She has a dangerous left-foot strike and is tremendous in the air. Kelly has been a very talented player for us, and can play in the midfield or on the back line. The sophomore duo of Stacia Hartung (Rochester, N.Y.) and Kaley Guthrie (Ogdensburg, N.J.) will primarily make up the attacking midfield, and both players will also slide up top when needed. Both players saw significant playing time as freshmen, and will be expected to play leading roles this fall. Stacia has outstanding vision and is strong on the ball, Clifton said. She has a great ability to hold the ball up, and is exciting to watch. Kaley is fearless running at opposing players, and she wears teams down with her athleticism. Sophomore midfielder Melissa Murowski Laura is an unbelievable physical presence on the field, Clifton said. She will verbally challenge the other defenders to be leaders and play their best. She is a brilliant tactical player and is exceptional in the air. The right side of the defense features sophomore Kacey Blandford (Columbia, Md.). Blandford moves over after playing on the left side as a freshman, when she was named to the Soccer Buzz All-Freshman team. Also playing on the right side are sophomore Jenna Gordon (White Plains, N.Y.), redshirt freshman Meghan Irrgang (Marietta, Ga.) and freshman Jessica Mooney (Boynton Beach, Fla.). Kayce is a strong player who will do a great job moving over to the right side this season, Clifton said. She is a great asset to the team and is comfortable in her role. As a group, our right side defenders possess outstanding speed and athleticism. Graduate student Patricia Misciagna (Red Bank, N.J.) is the team s top player on the left side, and she will share time with freshman Kristin Kelleher (Paradise Valley Ranch, Ariz.). Misciagna returns from an injury for a fifth season, and will once again be counted on to help stabilize the defense. Kelleher comes in with the experience required to make an immediate contribution. Patricia is a great leader, Clifton said. We always seem to be on the same wavelength; she is like a coach on the field. Kristin is very crafty and can get the job done. She possesses exceptional speed. The inside defenders are senior Kristin Anderson (Annapolis, Md.) and freshman Laura Sylvester (Broomall, Pa.). Anderson has been a mainstay on the defense for the past three seasons, while Sylvester is a local recruit who was a three-sport star in high school. There are few defenders who can read the game better than Kristin [Anderson], Clifton said. The bigger the game, the bigger she plays. Laura has a lot of potential and I think she will thrive in the training environment Villanova will provide. She is on her way to becoming a very special player. Sophomore midfielder Stacia Hartung 6

7 2005 SEASON PREVIEW FORWARD At the holding forward position, the Wildcats will be led by sophomore Nikki Mabery (Phoenix, Ariz.). The squad will also get junior Athena Yiantsos (Voorhees, N.J.) back from injury, and adds freshman Nicole Coia (Simpsonville, S.C.) to the mix. Mabery broke into the starting lineup midway through last season, and finished the year ranked second on the squad with four goals and 10 points. Yiantsos is an emerging player in the Villanova system, and has tremendous potential. Nikki is a great playmaker in our offensive system, Clifton said. She is an intelligent player and is very talented inside the box. Athena can stretch opposing players and defenses because of her speed. Nicole does a great job going after defenders. She competes oneon-one and has the ability to finish. At the attacking forward position, junior Megan Farmer (Middle Island, N.Y.) will be relied on to produce offense. Senior defender Kristin Anderson She is coming off an excellent spring season and is poised for a big year. Also battling for time will be freshman Ali Foley (Short Hills, N.J.). Megan plays at an unbelievable pace, Clifton said. She loves to work up and down the right flank. This could be a real breakout season for her. Ali is very adept at attacking the back line. The Wildcats will also receive a boost from the return of senior Lindsey Finnegan (Blackwood, N.J.), who missed the entire 2004 season recovering from an injury. As a sophomore in 2003, Finnegan emerged as the team s scoring leader and one of the conference s most dangerous offensive players. Lindsey is a creative player and constant scoring threat, Clifton said. She has been working hard to recover from her injury, and the signs are there that she is getting back to top form. SCHEDULE The Wildcats will play the earliest season opener in their history when they host La Salle on August 26. Villanova will also play St. Joseph s two days later to round out the opening weekend of the season. The highlight of the non-conference portion of the schedule will be Maryland/adidas Classic. The Wildcats will visit College Park, Md. to play games against the host Terrapins as well as UC-Santa Barbara. Following that tournament, Villanova will play in the adidas/hypertherm Classic at Dartmouth College. During that weekend, the Wildcats will face Arizona State and Minnesota. Our opening weekend against La Salle and St. Joseph s will be a terrific weekend for Philadelphia soccer, Clifton said. We have created our own little City Series with these two games, and anyone who is a fan of soccer in the area should want to be there. Both of these opponents are contenders in the Atlantic 10. Arizona State will also be a difficult one. They are always one of the top regional teams in the Far West, and we have three players from Arizona, so it will be an exciting game with both teams competing with great pride and bragging rights. Villanova will play an early conference game at Georgetown on August 31, but the heart of the conference schedule will not get underway until the end of September. With the Big East adding five new teams for the 2005 season, the Wildcats will play 11 regular season league games. Villanova will have a four-game conference homestand in October when they face Cincinnati, Louisville, West Virginia and Pittsburgh between October During the final weekend of the regular season, the squad will travel to road games against defending national champion Notre Dame as well as conference newcomer DePaul. It is a great opportunity for the Big East to welcome five new institutions, Clifton said. With a larger league, we will have a chance to develop some immediate rivalries and traditions. We will host two of the conference newcomers at our home field, and we want to give them a real Big East welcome. We also will play at Notre Dame during a football weekend, so I am sure that it will be a huge crowd and a great atmosphere for college soccer. Overall, this is a very ambitious schedule, one worthy of a team that has had the success that our program has achieved over the past four years. We feel that we are deserving of this schedule and fully believe that we can get after it. I am also looking forward to the tournaments at Maryland and Dartmouth. It will be a neat challenge for us to compete against the University of Maryland. We play an evening game against them under the lights, and it should be a great environment. Our game against Senior midfielder Kelly Breslin 7

29 In addition to its stellar play on the field, the Villanova University women s soccer team has also been involved in a number of successful projects off the field. The Wildcats are involved with such organizations as PAWS (Providing Athletes With Support), SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee), and CATS (Community Action Through Sports). Together with the many other Villanova varsity sports, the Villanova women s soccer team has worked hard to make a difference in the community. Since Ann Clifton took over as head coach of the women s soccer program in 1997, she has made academics a top priority as displayed by the Wildcats consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Awards. In addition, Clifton has made sure that the Wildcat players have continued to give back to the surrounding community. The Villanova women s soccer team has gone to visit sick children at St. Christopher s and participated in a number of other fulfilling programs. Here are just some of the programs that the Wildcats have been a part of during Ann Clifton s tenure: SOCCER ON THE STREETS The Wildcats collect used soccer equipment for Soccer on the Streets. This program is aimed at giving children the chance to play soccer. In addition to the collection of used soccer equipment, the Villanova women s soccer team also conducted clinics for underprivileged youths. ATHLETES ADOPT-A-FAMILY The Villanova women s soccer team was one of 10 Wildcat teams to take part in the Athlete Adopt-A-Family program. In this program, members of the team donated items for needy families during the Christmas season. These items included toys, clothes, kitchen supplies, toiletries, make-up, food, gift certificates and other presents. PEN PAL PROGRAM Over 100 athletes, including a number of women s soccer players, took part in a Pen Pal Program with fifth and sixth graders at Evans Computer Magnet Elementary School in Yeadon, Pa. Letters were exchanged each month between the Villanova athletes and elementary school students. During the spring semester, the kids came to Villanova to visit their pen pal in person and experience the life of a college student. One of the many experiences included the opportunity to eat in the University s South Campus dining hall. JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM The Junior Achievement Program comprised 100 athletes from Villanova University. These student-athletes prepared and trained to go into elementary school settings, where they worked hands on with the students in such activities as economic education. These Wildcat student-athletes taught five weekly minute lessons at local schools. SNEAKER COLLECTION The women s soccer Cats were among many Villanova athletes to donate their old sneakers to the poor and underprivileged. Over 100 pairs of sneakers were collected in the office of Athletic Student Services and were given to Campus Ministry to deliver to needy families. READING ACROSS AMERICA PROGRAM During Dr. Seuss s birthday several year ago, the Villanova women s soccer team traveled to a local elementary school and read several Dr. Seuss books to the students. WILDCATS I N THE COMMUNITY NCAA WOMEN S FINAL FOUR IN PHILADELPHIA Several years ago, several Villanova University women s soccer players gave their time this past spring to the NCAA Final Four in Philadelphia. Former players Dyane Noonan and Jessica Painchaud, and Cary Morrell helped the Philadelphia community share in the fun and excitement of NCAA Final Four basketball. SHRINERS HOSPITAL VISIT During the fall, the Villanova women s soccer team often visits the children at the Scriners Hospital in Philadelphia. While they were there, the team helped the patients paint pumpkins and make masks for Halloween. YOUTH CLINICS AND GIRL SCOUTS DAY The Villanova women s soccer program brought youth teams in and gave a clinic to teach them about the finer points of the game of soccer. Our team also spoke to the Girl Scouts about our program and about the importance of getting a good education. When we discuss our community service programs with the Villanova women s soccer team, I always use a William Penn quote: I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore there be any kindness I can show or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again. (William Penn, ). -Villanova Head Coach Ann Clifton PHILADELPHIA FIT FEST A number of women s soccer athletes participate in the Philadelphia Fit Fest. Soccer is just one of the many sports being taught at the fit fest. Wildcat players and coaches help teach the fundamentals of the game to inter-city kids from the Philadelphia area. The importance of staying involved in annual community service projects in the area has been an emphasis of head coach Ann Clifton in her nine years with the women s soccer program. 29
