The Teams WTAMU is 10-1 overall, 8-1 in LSC overall and 5-1 in LSC South, and claimed their first outright Lone Star Conference title since 1986 with a win over Tarleton State University on Nov. 5. The win also secured WTAMU s first ever NCAA-II playoff game and the Buffaloes also reached the 10 win plateau for the first time since The Buffaloes enter the postseason with the No. 1 seed in the NCAA-II Southwest Region and are ranked No. 7 in the AFCA poll. {See Page 5 For Complete AFCA Poll and Region Rankings}. Not This Week For the second time in the last three games, WTAMU head coach Don Carthel does not have some sort of tie to this week s opponent. No member of the WTAMU coaching staff is believed to have any ties to PSU, but three members of the WTAMU Athletic Administration do. WTAMU SID Zach Fisher was an assistant SID at PSU prior to coming to WTAMU, and WTAMU AD Ed Harris was AD at MIAA foe Missouri Western, while WTAMU Associate AD Paul Sweetgall was an Assistant AD at Missouri Western, as well as another MIAA foe, Emporia State. On The Air and On The Web Listen to Buffalo football action on the Buffalo Sports Network on KGNC 710 AM, as broadcasts starting one hour before kickoff with the Buffalo Football Pre-Game Show, presented by Budweiser. Fans can additionally access rosters, schedules, statistics and press releases of the Buffs and Lady Buffs throughout the year. Saturday s NCAA-II Playoff Game To Be Broadcast Live On TV Saturday s game will be broadcast live on the local Fox affiliate KCIT-TV (Cox channel 13) locally. Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m. at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. KCIT was granted shared broadcast rights by the NCAA, and will be sending a satellite feed back to KSNF-TV, the local NBC affiliate in the Pittsburg, Kan./Joplin, Mo. viewing area. Part of the reasoning for granting the rare broadcast rights is the appeal of the large crowds that the Buffaloes have been drawing this season. WTAMU currently leads NCAA-II in attendance, averaging just over 14,000 per home game. Nationally Ranked Buffaloes: Up Five Spots To No. 7 WTAMU has climbed five spots to No. 7 in the AFCA Poll, after being ranked No. 12 the week before. The Buffaloes tie their highest Division II ranking ever as they were ranked No. 7 prior to the Angelo State loss. This season is the first time since the final poll of the 1998 season that the Buffaloes have a national ranking and the highest WTAMU has been since being No. 8 in the Oct. 19, 1999 poll. This week s d2football.com Top 25 Poll ranks the Buffaloes at No. 13, while Don Hansen Football Gazette Top 25 ranks WTAMU at No. 10. Pitt State is No. 23 in the AFCA Poll, d2football.com has the Gorillas ranked 25th, and No. 21 in the Don Hansen Football Gazette Top 25 Ranking. 3 Regional Rankings: Back At No. 1 WTAMU is back atop the NCAA-II Southwest Region Rankings at No. 1, where they started when the first regional rankings were released on Oct. 3. The Buffaloes were at No. 2 before they played Tarleton State on Nov. 5. The final rankings came in and seeded WTAMU No. 1 as NCAA-II playoffs came around. The final regional rankings list two Lone Star Conference teams, three Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association team and one Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team. WTAMU tops the list just ahead of former No. 1 Washburn who slid to No. 2 following a regular-season finale loss to Missouri Western. Angelo State moved up to No. 3 heading into the playoffs, after beating Texas A&M-Kingsville in a wild overtime thriller. The lone RMAC representative is Nebraska- Kearney, who was the fifth seed, while the MIAA s Northwest Missouri hung on to the No. 6 spot. In the first-round, Pitt State roped the Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney, while the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri clawed the Rams of Angelo State, as NWMSU blasted ASU, {See Page 5 For Complete Region Rankings} New Look Buffaloes WTAMU is sporting a new look this season, as the Buffaloes changed helmets, logos and uniforms. WTAMU will wear all-maroon helmets, with a white 80 s throwback WT logo. The Buffaloes will be wearing all maroon uniforms with white trim at home and white jerseys with maroon pants with white trim on the road. Fabulous 400 WTAMU won its 400th all-time win on Sept. 3, as the Buffaloes are now (.470), in their 92nd year of play. The Coaches Saturday s coaches are on the opposite ends of the spectrum, as WTAMU head coach Don Carthel is in his first season at the helm of the Buffaloes, while PSU s Chuck Broyles is synonymous with Pitt State football. Broyles is in his 16th season at the helm of his alma mater, and served as an assistant coach on the Gorillas staff for three different tenures prior to taking over as head coach. Don Carthel (Eastern New Mexico, 1974) is in his first year guiding the Buffaloes and is off to a 10-1 start, having been named the Lone Star Conference South Division Coach of the Year. Carthel was the first-ever coach in Buffalo football history to start their coaching career with an 8-0 record, surpassing Morris Stone, who won the first seven games of the 1994 season. With the win over Tarleton State on Nov. 5, Carthel became the first coach since Frank Kimbrough (the Kimbrough Memorial Stadium namesake) in 1950 to win 10 games in a season. Carthel graduated from ENMU with a bachelor s degree in physical education with a minor in mathematics in 1974 and his master s in physical education from ENMU in He played center/kicker for the Greyhounds from , helping ENMU to a No. 17 ranking in NAIA his senior season. Carthel is returning to college football after a 14-year sabbatical, retiring as head coach at Eastern New Mexico in In his seven years at ENMU, Carthel compiled a (.610) ledger, winning seven or more games in four of those seven seasons, including opening the 1987 season with a 9-0 record and tying the school record for victories in a season. In five of Carthel s seven years, the Greyhounds were ranked in the Division II Top 20 Poll. Carthel was inducted into the ENMU Hall of Fame in Carthel retired to farm and raise his family in his hometown of Friona, Texas. He got back into coaching by leading the Amarillo Dusters, an Arena football team, before taking over at WTAMU in April of Carthel directed perhaps one of the biggest turnarounds in college football in his first season at the helm of WTAMU, turning around a program that had won a combined seven games in the last five seasons, transforming the Buffaloes from underdog to top dog in having their first winning season since Carthel came to WTAMU after a year-plus stint with the Amarillo Dusters, now of the Arena Football League 2, leading them to a 15-3 record in winning the Intense Football League championship before making the leap to AFL2 this year and had a 2-1 record when Carthel resigned his post to take over the WTAMU program. Carthel has a 23-2 (.920) record in his last 25 games coaching and a 27-5 (.844) record overall combined of his Dusters and Buffaloes coaching tenures. Carthel has a (.643) overall record as a collegiate head coach. Saturday is Carthel s first NCAA-II playoff game, as ENMU was snubbed from the playoffs in 1991, after Carthel directed the Greyhounds to a mark and the LSC Championship TEAM STATISTICS/LSC RANKING (National Ranking In Parenthesis) OFFENSE Total Offense G Yards Avg./G 1. 4 While this is Carthel s first time facing Pitt State as a head coach, he is 1-0 lifetime vs. PSU, as he faced them during his senior season at ENMU in 1973, on the winning side of a 38-3 score on Nov. 10, 1973, playing both center and kicker, booting a 19-yard field goal and five extra points. Chuck Broyles (Pitt State, 1970) is in his 16th season heading the Gorillas program. With a (.828) ledger, Broyles is the second-winningest active NCAA-II head coach by percentage, trailing Chris Hatcher from defending D-II National Champion Valdosta State (68-10,.872). Broyles also is the fourth-winningest active head coach among all levels of NCAA. Only Hatcher at Valdosta, Mike Kelley at I-AA Dayton ( ,.8297) and Bob Stoops at D-I Oklahoma ( ,.8295) have better winning percentages. Broyles is (.586) in NCAA-II postseason action, as he has led the Gorillas into the NCAA-II playoffs in 14 of his 16 seasons at the helm. Last Saturday, Broyles set an NCAA-II playoff record by coaching his 29th playoff game, breaking Frank Cignetti of Indiana (Pa.) University s record of 28 games. Gorillas and Buffaloes Series History: First In 66 Saturday is the first meeting between WTAMU and PSU since 1939, and the Buffaloes hold a advantage. The Gorillas fell behind 13-0 against the Buffaloes before Morgan came in to engineering the final quarter heroics. West Texas took a 13-0 halftime advantage thanks to a 4-yard firstquarter touchdown pass from Flippin Foster Watkins to Phoebe Thomas and a 4-yard second-quarter touchdown run by Watkins. Watkins booted the first of the two conversion tries, but misfired on the second. Morgan engineered the first PSU scoring drive by tossing a 20-yard pass to his brother, Bill Morgan, then tossing a 14-yard pass to Edwin Ramsey, before finally punching the ball in with a 6-yard toss to his brother Bill once again. Don Turner, who missed a first quarter place kick, booted the conversion kick to trim the margin to Morgan again went to the airways to orchestrate PSU s final scoring drive. He completed short passes to Ramsey and Bill Morgan eventually chipping down to the WT 8-yard line, before Carl Beard plunged in for the score. Following a pair of offsides penalties on the Buffaloes, the Gorillas attempted to rush the ball in for the go-ahead conversion point, but Jack Morgan was stuffed inches short of the goal line, and the game ended in a tie. 6 About The WTAMU Buffaloes WTAMU is 10-1 overall, 8-1 in LSC overall and 5-1 in LSC South, and claimed their first outright Lone Star Conference title since 1986 with a win over Tarleton State University on Nov. In the win over Tarleton State, the Buffaloes had to come from behind in the second half to win. The win was WTAMU s fifth win by eight points or less including four out of the last five games. It was also WTAMU s sixth come from behind victory this season as well. Junior QB Dalton Bell, who was announced as a Harlon Hill National Finalist on Tuesday, was 34-of-46 for 325 yards and fired two TD passes in guiding WTAMU to the LSC title-clinching win over Tarleton State. WTAMU secured the win over TSU on a late interception by junior defensive back Ron Evans. It was Evans third oskie of the season, and all have been at big moments. Evans had two interceptions in the Texas A&M-Kingsville game, snaring TAMU-K s first two passes of the game, helping the Buffaloes to an upset win over the then-#3 Javelinas. With the win, the Buffaloes improved to 6-0 on the road this season, and have won seven in a row and ten of the last 13 games in the road whites. WTAMU clinched its first undefeated road regular season since at least 1946, as records are unclear before that. WTAMU still totes not only the LSC s but NCAA-II s top passing offense (380.5 ypg), and leads the league and are sixth in the nation in total offense (500.5 ypg). The Buffaloes also lead the conference and are fifth in the country in scoring offense, hanging 43.7 ppg on the board. WTAMU is tops in the league in pass efficiency (155.2). The Buffalo offense moved up this week to fifth in the league in 3rd-down conversions (54-of-140,.386) and the Buffs rank second in the conference in 4th down conversions which they are 12 of 18 for a 66.7 percentage. The Buffalo defense is 12th in the LSC in total defense (413.9 ypg), and gave up 365 yards to Tarleton s offense, but put the clamps on in the second half, yielding TSU s Derek Ross to only 41 yards rushing after halftime. The WTAMU defense held TSU to 4-of-12 on 3rd-down conversions. WTAMU currently is ranked eighth in pass defense (213.0 ypg) and last (13th) in rush defense. The Buffaloes remained ninth in scoring defense by giving up 28.4 ppg, but are fourth in pass defense efficiency (113.6). WTAMU is tops in the conference in first downs, amassing 258 (23.5 pg), but is 11th in time of possession (28:32/game). In Saturday s win over Tarleton State, the Buffaloes had the advantage in time of possession as they had the ball for 34:12 including almost 20 minutes in the second half. WTAMU continues to be a front runner in the league as WTAMU is second in the league and rank 14th in the NCAA-II in turnover margin (+12/+1.1 pg). The Buffaloes have snagged an LSC-best 23 interceptions this year, which is just two shy of the school record of 25 set in Southwestern Bell: Not Just a Phone Company Calling the signals for the NCAA-II and LSC-leading passing offense is Harlon Hill finalist junior QB Dalton Bell (6-3, 205/Canyon, Texas), who was tabbed as a finalist for the prestigious award on Tuesday. Bell is 290-of-421 (.689) for 3,620 yards (362.0 ypg) with 30 TDs and 10 INTs. Bell is one of only three QB s in Division II to average over 350 yards a game. Against Tarleton State, Bell was 34-of-46 for 325 yards and two TDs, and had 20 yards in rushing including a 1-yard TD plunge. He ranks eighth in the conference in TFLs. Evans had the game-clinching oskie for the Buffs at Tarleton as he intercepted the ball late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for WTAMU. Evans was named the LSC South Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the win over TAMUK after snagging two interceptions on consecutive TAMUK possessions, which were the only two passes caught by either team from Javelina starting quarterback Cory Miles. Evans also had seven solo tackles, including three tackles for loss and a quarterback sack which jarred the ball loose from TAMUK backup Joey Pena, who came on in relief of Miles. It was the first time a WTAMU player has received the Award since at least Senior LB Chad Webster (6-1, 220/Odessa, Texas) posted a career-high 20 tackles in the win over ENMU, and ranks third on the team and tied for 34th in the league in tackles with 66 (17 solo, 49 assists). On top of all that, Steward also forced a fumble after ACU had closed to that helped the Buffaloes break the game open as WTAMU took over and drove the field and scored, and then scored again on the ensuing kick return. For his performance, Steward was named LSC South Co-Defensive Player of the Week, giving WTAMU two such awards this season, after not having any since at least Senior K/P Jacob Felton (6-0, 195/Amarillo, Texas) was named to the honorable mention All-LSC South list, as he will finish his career as the WTAMU s single-season field goal record holder. 9 Buffalo Bits Lighting Up The Scoreboard: It took WTAMU five games last year to score 90 points and they did it in a single-game in the season-opener... the Buffaloes have now scored 481 points on the year through 11 games (43.7 ppg), surpassing last year s point total of 225 points (22.5 ppg) through 10 games... At their current 43.7 ppg output, the Buffaloes need 26 and 30 points, respectively, to break both the school record (506 in 1994) and conference record (510, Texas A&I - now TAMU-Kingsville in 1976) for points and have slightly slipped below being on track to have the highest scoring average in both school history (46.0 ppg in 1994) and LSC history (46.4 ppg, Texas A&I - now TAMU-Kingsville in 1976). A Lot In A Little: The Buffaloes don t need a lot of time to score all their points, as they are near the bottom at 10th in the LSC in time of possession (28:32). Audi 5,000 In the Indy 500: The WTAMU offense has compiled over 5,000 yards (5,509 yards/500.8 ypg), while running 789 plays (71.7 plays per game) and are averaging 7.0 yards per play... defensively, the Buffaloes are yielding 5.6 yards per play {See Page 6 for play breakdown}. Red Zone Rising: The Buffaloes were perfect in the Red Zone for the first three games of the season, before losing their perfect-ness in the Red Zone against SWOSU, but were 4-of- 7 Saturday against Tarleton, missing on their first three trips in the opening quarter on two missed field goals and a lost fumble, before going 4-of-4 from there on out... WTAMU is now 46-of- 52 (.885) in the Red Zone on the year, which leads the LSC - WTAMU has 34 TDs (17 pass, 17 rush) and 12 FGs... That s a significant improvement from last year, when WTAMU was 22-of- 35 (.629), ranking next to last in the LSC... Defensively, WTAMU s opponents are scoring on.721 (31-of-43) of their trips, as the Buffalo defense has held on downs four times, snagged three INTs, recovered one fumble and forced three missed FGs. Passing the Buck and the Ball: Seven receivers caught a pass Saturday... four Buffaloes had five or more catches... on the year, 15 different receivers have caught passes, including six with 10 or more. Triple D: Dynamic Dale Davis: Sophomore utilityman Dale Davis (6-0, 185/Amarillo, Texas) does a little of this and a little of that in each game... against Commerce, Davis completed a pass to junior TE/QB Hunter Wall for a two-point conversion and was the holder for Felton s game-winning FG... in the MSU game, as he had a fumble recovery on a punt return, protected a onside kick attempt, and perhaps most importantly, had a seven-yard pass to freshman DB Michael Brisco on a 4th-and-1 at the WTAMU 44 on the Buffaloes opening drive of the second half, allowing the drive to continue and resulting with a TD to pull WTAMU within, on the season, Davis has also scored on a fake field goal, and has a 38-yard pass play, both against ECU on Sept. 3. Sack Lack Pack: The Buffaloes offensive line has relinquished its lead in the LSC in sacks against, as they are third, yielding 12 sacks this season, including three against ASU for the second year in a row, the only team to sack the Buffaloes more than twice in the last two years... the WTAMU QB has been sacked twice in three other games this season... the 12 sacks have occurred on 505 attempts (a whopping 42.1 attempts per sack)... over the last two seasons, the WTAMU O-Line has yielded only 20 sacks on 1,036 pass attempts (one sack every 51.8 attempts), as last season the O-Line gave up only eight sacks in 531 attempts (one sack every 66.4 attempts). Sack Pack Rackin Em Up: WTAMU s defense is fifth in the LSC with 23 sacks, which surpasses the Buffaloes LSC-worst 15 sacks last season. Taking Care of the Pigskin: The Buffaloes had a threegame no interception streak snapped by Tarleton, as the Texans snared two picks. WTAMU had not thrown an interception in the previous three games, the only three times all year. Oskie, Oskie: The Buffaloes have snagged 23 interceptions on the season, two shy of the school record of 25 set in First And Second To Last In Firsts: The Buffaloes offense has piled up 258 first downs (23.5 pg), ranking first in the conference... meanwhile, the WTAMU defense ranks second to last (12th) in the league in opponent first downs, yielding 232 (21.1 pg). Hanky Panky: For the ninth time in 11 games this season, WTAMU was the most penalized team on the field, as the Buffaloes were f lagged 12 times for 125 yards (10.4 ypp)... The Buffaloes have been penalized 132 times for 1,249 yards (an average of 12.0 penalties per game for an average of ypg)... WTAMU is the most-penalized team in the LSC, holding an 11-penalty and 117 yard advantage over MSU, who is the secondmost penalized team in the league. Local Yocals: The place-kicking combo of Felton, holder Dale Davis and freshman long snapper T.A. Quinonez are all local standouts, as Felton and Quinonez are former Randall HS Raiders and Davis is a former Amarillo HS Sandie. Third in Five: The fifth-year senior trio of DL Darrell Lewis, RB/DB Dominique Bibben and TE/DE Pat Lindsey, as well as linebackers coach Rich Renner have been under three head coaches, Stan McGarvey, Ronnie Jones ( ) and now Carthel... senior LB Chad Webster has also played under all three coaches, as Webster left WTAMU for the 2002 season. Oh Captain, My Captain: Lewis, Bibben, Lindsey are joined by senior OL Pat McCoy and junior QB Dalton Bell as the 2005 Buffalo Football Captains. About the Pitt State Gorillas PSU is 9-3 overall, 6-2 in MIAA play and finished second in their conference behind Washburn University, the No. 2 seed in the Southwest Region. The Gorillas tote the fifth seed in the Southwest Region and are ranked No. 23 in the AFCA Top 25 Poll. PSU defeated No. 4 seed University of Nebraska-Kearney, 49-20, in last week s first round of the NCAA-II playoffs. The Gorillas high-powered offense racked up 536 yards of offense against Kearney with 323 of it coming on the ground, including 112 yards on 17 carries with two TDs from Harlon Hill Finalist junior RB Germaine Race. The Gorillas have won five of their last six games, as they lost their regular-season finale, 83-21, at Central Missouri on Nov. 5. PSU leads the nation in scoring, hanging 50.3 points per game on the board, while ranking second in total offense with ypg. The Gorilla offense is ranked third in the country in rushing with ypg and 25th in the nation in passing with ypg. Holding the Gorillas under 200 yards may be a key to victory for WTAMU, as PSU is just (.327) in games being held under 200. Once the Gorillas reach 200 yards, they are (.907) when compiling over 200 yards on the ground and even better at (.967) when surpassing the 300 yard rushing mark. PSU balances its offensive attack with a potent passing game, as the Gorillas average 253 yards through the air per outing. The Gorillas passed for a school record 3,656 yards in 2004, averaging yards per game through the air. Despite rushing the football on 68 percent of their total scrimmage plays, the Gorillas (who led the NCAA on all levels in scoring) threw the most TD passes of any team in NCAA-IA, NCAA-IAA or NCAA-II last year, with 45 scoring strikes. Sam Houston (NCAA-IAA) was second with 42 TD passes (in 14 games), while Bowling Green (NCAA-IA) was third with 41 TD passes (in 12 games). Prolific passing teams Hawaii (which passed 71 percent of its downs) and Texas Tech (which passed 69 percent of its downs) tossed 38 and 34 TD passes in The PSU defense yields yards to the opposition s offense per game, ranking 107th in the nation. The Gorillas opponents are compiling rushing and passing yards per game. PSU ranks 104th in the country in pass efficiency defense (126.7) and 100th in scoring defense, giving up 28.6 points per game. #7 WTAMU Buffaloes Host #23 PSU Gorillas In Second Round NCAA-II Playoff Game - Page 9

10 Directing the lethal Gorilla offense is senior QB Andy Majors (6-2, 190/Overland Park, Kan.), who was selected as a firstteam All-MIAA honoree. Majors leads the MIAA and ranks 12th nationally in total offense (296.1 ypg), passing for a PSU singleseason record of 2,738 yards (228.2 ypg) on 171-of-297 (.576) for 18 TDs with 10 INTs. On the ground, Majors has 156 rushes for 815 yards (5.2 ypc/67.9 ypg) for 12 TDs. In the loss to Central Missouri on Nov. 5, Majors set a new PSU single-season total offense record, as he now has 3,553 total yards for the year. Majors is 11-4 (.733) as a starter. The bulk of the Gorillas ground game comes from Harlon Hill Finalist junior RB Germaine Race (5-11, 225/Warrensburg, Mo.), the MIAA Offensive MVP. Race ranks sixth in NCAA-II in rushing with ypg, and is the nation s second-leading scoring, ringing up 16.0 points per game, as he has scored 32 TDs, needing two TDs to break the NCAA-II single-season rushing TD record of 33 held by Ian Smart of LIU-C.W. Post in 2001 and needs 21 points to surpass the NCAA-II single-season scoring record of 212 points, held by David Kircus from Grand Valley State. Race has compiled 1,836 yards on 233 carries (7.9 ypc/ ypg), an average that was lowered after only have four carries for 12 yards in the Central Missouri loss, as Race has been hampered by a nagging hamstring injury suffered in the game against Northwest Missouri. Last week against Nebraska- Kearney, Race returned to form with a 112 yard effort on 17 carries for a pair of TDs. Nearly 50 percent of Race s rushing totals have come after first contact, as the punishing runner has amassed 873 yards (48 percent of total yardage) after contact. Race has only lost two fumbles in 233 carries, an average of just one fumble per 117 carries. When the Gorillas go to the air, their primary receiver is senior TE Brandon Twito (6-7, 270/Sanger, Texas), who has 33 catches for 559 yards (16.9 ypc/46.6 ypg) for a team-high five TDs. Last week in PSU s first-round playoff game, Twito had five catches for 132 yards, giving him his second 100-yard receiving game of the season. He had a 153 yard outing on six catches against Southwest Baptist on Oct. 15 to establish a new PSU single-game tight end receiving yards record. Senior LB Josh Lattimer (5-11, 230/Fort Scott, Kan.) anchors PSU s defense, and is a first-team All-MIAA selection. Lattimer has posted 108 tackles (54 solo) on the season with 10 TFLs, one sack and one INT. Last week against UNK, Lattimer had 13 tackles, including stuffing the Lopers for a two-yard loss on fourthand-goal from the PSU 1 to preserve PSU s lead. Lattimer is second on Gorillas career tackles list with 374 tackles. Senior DE Brandon Jones (6-3, 225/Tulsa, Okla.) and junior DE Ryan Meredith (6-2, 240/Bartlesville, Okla.) provide a potent one-two punch for the Gorillas defensive line. Jones was a second-team All-MIAA honoree after recording 70 tackles (32 solo) with 11 TFLs and 4.5 QB sacks. Meredith was recognized with first-team All-MIAA honors after posting 60 tackles (34 solo) with 13 TFLs and 8.5 QB sacks. Placekicking duties are handled by unanimous first-team All- MIAA performer, junior PK Nathan Alleman (6-3, 185/Bartlesville, Okla.). Alleman is the NCAA-II career record holder for PATs made (238) and attempted (250). This season, he has made 82- of-83 (.987) PATs and hit 8-of-10 (.800) field goals. Alleman has recorded 106 points (8.8 ppg) on the year. The bad news is that junior QB Dalton Bell, the nation s leading passer, was a secondteam selection in the awards voted on by the league s coaches and announced Nov. 9 by the conference office. WTAMU won the LSC Championship for the first time since 1986, as the Buffaloes are 10-1 overall and 9-1 in the LSC, winning the conference title outright, as well as the LSC South crown with a 5-1 division record after being picked last in the LSC South Preseason Poll. It is also WTAMU s first 10-win season since 1950 and the Buffaloes are the No. 1 seed in the NCAA-II Southwest Regional Playoffs, marking WTAMU s first-ever playoff appearance. Carthel directed perhaps one of the biggest turnarounds in college football in his first season at the helm of WTAMU, turning around a program that had won a combined seven games in the last five seasons, transforming the Buffaloes from underdog to top dog in having their first winning season since Carthel came to WTAMU after a year-plus stint with the Amarillo Dusters, now of the Arena Football League 2, leading them to a 15-3 record in winning the Intense Football League championship before making the leap to AFL2 this year and had a 2-1 record when Carthel resigned his post to take over the WTAMU program. Carthel has a 23-2 record in his last 25 games coaching and a 27-5 (.844) record overall combined of his Dusters and Buffaloes coaching tenures. Martin, a 6-4, 210, wide receiver out of Aledo, Texas, had 60 catches for an LSC-high 1,041 yards (17.4 ypc), the only receiver #7 WTAMU Buffaloes Host #23 PSU Gorillas In Second Round NCAA-II Playoff Game - Page 10

11 in the conference to top the 1,000 yard mark and an LSC-best 12 TDs. In the NCAA-II statistics, Martin ranked 18th in receiving yards/game with 94.6 ypg and 46th in receptions/game with 5.5. Martin is No. 8 on the WTAMU Career Receiving Yards List with 1,558 yards and No. 7 on the WTAMU Career Pass Receptions List with 108 catches. Senior offensive linemen Dejuan Skinner and Pat McCoy joined Martin on the first-team All-LSC list. Skinner, a 6-6, 345, right guard from Starkville, Miss., and McCoy, a 6-6, 335, left tackle from Fairfield, Calif., anchored an offensive line that gave up just 12 sacks this season on 505 pass attempts (42.1 attempts per sack). Over the last two seasons, the WTAMU offensive line has yielded only 20 sacks in 1,036 pass attempts (one sack every 51.8 attempts. Bell was joined on the second-team by the junior trio of WR Ramon Perry, LB Max Steward and DB Keon Gaither. Five WTAMU players made the honorable mention list, as seniors DE Darrell Lewis, K/P Jacob Felton and TE Jon Lockett, along with juniors C Nick Ashley and RB Joe Harris were recognized. Bell, a 6-3, 205, native of Canyon, Texas, and a Southwest Region finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, is 290-of-421 (.689) for 3,620 yards (362.0 ypg) and 30 TDs. Bell leads not only the conference, but Division II in total offense (365.6 ypg), directing the nation s leading passing offense (380.5 ypg) and ranking eighth in pass efficiency (160.3). Bell now has 3,620 yards for his career, leaving him 45 yards from surpassing Tod Mayfield s LSC and WTAMU record of 3,664 yards from the last magical LSC title season of Bell also is one TD shy of Mayfield s single-season school record of 31 TDs and the LSC record of 32 TDs by Rex Lamberti of Abilene Christian University. Bell did set a new LSC record for total offensive yards, as he now has 3,658, surpassing Drew Beard from Southeastern Oklahoma last season, but just shy of Grady Benton s WTAMU record of 3,690 in His current average of ypg is better than the LSC and WTAMU record of by Derek Maupin last season. Bell now has seven 300+ outings on the year. Perry, a 5-9, 175, native of Pacoima, Calif., is second on the team and in the league, as well as 21st in the nation in receptions/ game with 6.4 and fifth in the conference in receiving yards/game with 78.5, on a team-high 69 receptions for 864 yards (12.5 ypc) and five TDs. Perry also is eighth in the league in all purpose yards with ypg, as he has 150 yards on 19 punt returns (7.9 ypr) and eight kick returns for 157 yards (19.6 ypr). Gaither also is third in the LSC and 34th in NCAA-II in passes defended (1.3 per game) as he has four pass break-ups as well on the year. He was recognized in Sports Illustrated s Go Figure section for his six oskies in WTAMU s first two games. Gaither ranks sixth on the team in tackles with 56 (29 solo, 27 assists). Lewis, (6-0, 225/Muleshoe, Texas) has been a terror to the opposition s backfield, as he has 41 tackles (20 solo, 21 assists), including 8.0 TFLs and three sacks, as well as seven QB hurries, two forced fumbles and one recovered fumble. In the TAMU-C contest, Lewis blocked a punt and returned it 17 yards for a TD to give WTAMU a lead midway through the fourth quarter. Felton a 6-0, 195, native of Amarillo, Texas is WTAMU s single-season field goal record holder, as he drilled his 15th of the year in the TSU game. He has two game-winning FGs as time expired this season (MSU on , TAMU-C on ), as he is now 15-of-20 (.750). Felton also extends WTAMU career record holder mark, as he now has 33 career FGs. Felton was 3-of-4 on PATs, as he is also the school record holder with 119 PATs. Felton has 90 points (8.2 ppg), which ties the LSC single-season kicking points record, held by Bryan Thompson of Angelo State in 1989, and former TSU kicker and current Texan assistant coach J.W. Boren in Also somewhat within range, now that WTAMU has made the playoffs, is the LSC record of 55-of-69 PATs, as Felton currently is 45- of-52, which is the new WTAMU school record of single-season PATs. Felton was honored as the LSC South Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the MSU game, and was also recognized by Don Hansen s Football Gazette National Player of the Week. Lockett (6-3, 215/Haywood, Calif.) has 51 catches for 623 yards (12.2 ypc) with five TDs on the year. Lockett is eighth in the league in receptions/game and just outside the Top 10 in the league in receiving yards/game with Ashley, a 6-1, 285, native of Stratford, Texas, was the starting center for the offensive line before suffering a seasonending knee injury in the ASU game. Harris, (5-9, 185/Long Beach, Calif.) has exactly 100 carries for 691 yards (6.9 ypc/69.1 ypg) with nine TDs, ranking ninth in the conference in overall scoring and seventh in TD scoring. Harris is seventh in the LSC in all purpose yards with ypg. Tarleton State had eight first-team selections and each of the division s other seven teams had at least 10 players recognized. Altogether, 85 student-athletes were recognized by the LSC s postseason awards program, with 30 players named to the first team, 28 on the second team and another 27 gaining honorable mention. The all-conference honors were selected by the head coaches of the seven South Division teams. #7 WTAMU Buffaloes Host #23 PSU Gorillas In Second Round NCAA-II Playoff Game - Page 11

The win gives WTAMU its first LSC title since 1986 and is the Buffaloes first 10-win season since WTAMU will likely be the No. 1 seed in the NCAA-II Southwest Regional Playoffs, when the field is announced on Sunday at Noon CST on ESPNews. The Buffaloes are now 10-1 overall and 9-1 in the LSC, winning the conference title outright, as well as the LSC South crown with a 5-1 division record after being picked last in the LSC South Preseason Poll. It also was WTAMU s fifth win by eight points or less and sixth game overall. The Buffaloes finish regular season 6-0 on the road this season and have won seven in a row and 10 of the last 13 games in the roadwhite uniforms. WTAMU has not gone undefeated on the road for the season since at least 1946, as records are incomplete for road games prior to that season. The win snaps WTAMU s five-game losing streak in the series and TSU now leads 9-6, and was the closest game of the series since WTAMU s last win, a 7-6 decision in TSU had outscored WTAMU (avg of ) in the last two games at Stephenville. During the Texans five-game win streak, they outscored the Buffaloes , an average of WTAMU overcame a 17-0 deficit with 20 third-quarter points and held TSU to 132 yards in the second half, as the Buffalo defense put the clamps on the Texans, icing the victory with junior DB Ron Evans interception at the WTAMU 30 with 19 seconds left.
