2 UMass Women s Basketball Game Notes» 2 Head Coach Sharon Dawley Head Coach Sharon Dawley St. Anselm 83 Third Season Career Record: (19th Season) Sharon Dawley, the former women s basketball coach at the University of Vermont, was named as the 10th head coach in the history of the University of Massachusetts women s basketball program on April 6, 2010, and begins her third season at the helm for the Minutewomen in In her first season in Amherst, Dawley coached her squad to one of the best three point shooting percentages in the country, highlighted by Cerie Mosgrove, who led the nation with 49.7% clip from beyond the arc. Mosgrove, one of several Minutewomen who enjoyed career years under Dawley s guidance in , went on to win the National Women s 3-Point Shooting Championship at the men s Final Four in Houston, Texas. Dawley came to UMass after a highly successful tenure with the Catamounts that included two consecutive America East titles ( and ) and three straight postseason berths. In seven years at Vermont, Dawley posted a mark of (.598) and holds a career record of (.594). She became the winningest coach in Vermont women s basketball history when the Catamounts upset No. 7-seed Wisconsin in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on March, 21, 2010, the program s first NCAA tournament victory. Under Dawley s guidance, Vermont earned an automatic NCAA berth as a No. 10 seed after successfully defending its America East Tournament title in The Catamounts defeated top-seeded and No. 21-ranked Hartford in the conference championship game, UVM posted a record of 27-7 that season, the third-highest wins total for the program all-time and led the nation with 18 road victories. Dawley earned her 100th career win at Vermont with a victory over Hartford in the semifinals of the 2009 America East Championship as UVM went on to capture its first conference title since The Catamounts made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in nine years where the squad fell to eventual national champion Connecticut. During Dawley s tenure at Vermont, 23 of the 28 players that took the floor earned either academic and/or athletic accolades from the conference office. She coached an America East Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, a two-time Scholar-Athlete and a two-time Most Outstanding Player at the America East Tournament. Under Dawley s direction, the Catamounts earned six all-conference selections, four all-rookie nods and two all-academic team honors. In , Dawley guided Vermont to one of its best seasons in the program s existence. The Catamounts went 24-9 overall, recording the fourth most wins all-time, and were the America East runners-up during the regular season with a 13-3 league mark. UVM also earned its second trip to the Postseason WNIT Tournament in school history and the first postseason appearance in Dawley s tenure. The Catamounts drew regional rival Dartmouth in the first round of the 2008 WNIT and Dawley faced her former mentor Chris Wielgus on the opposing sideline. Vermont defeated the Big Green to earn the team s third postseason victory all-time and advanced to the second round of the WNIT for the second time in the program s history. In Dawley led UVM to a record and a third place finish in America East. She guided Vermont to a 13-3 start, highlighted with Vermont s first-ever win over a ranked team when the Catamounts upset No. 22 Boston College in the championship game of the URI Invitational. After being picked to finish eighth in the league s preseason poll, Dawley coached Vermont to a No. 3 seed in the America East Championship and the Catamounts advanced to the semifinals. The Catamounts were also named one of the most improved teams in the country at the Division I level following the campaign. In Dawley s first season on the Vermont sidelines ( ), she posted the best start by a first-year head coach at Vermont, guiding the Catamounts to a 6-2 mark to begin the season. Vermont finished the year with a record of and wrapped up the regular season with victories over America East s No. 1 Maine, No. 2 Binghamton and No. 4 Albany on the road. Vermont s victory at Maine snapped the Black Bear s 31-game conference win streak. Under Dawley s guidance, the Vermont women s basketball team also enjoyed success in the classroom. During her seven years at the helm of the Catamounts, her student-athletes earned 55 America East Academic Honor Roll citations, including 23 nominations to the America East Commissioner s Academic Honor Roll for achieving a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. On Dawley s watch, current UMass Director of Basketball Operations May Kotsopoulos earned the America East Women s Basketball Scholar- Athlete honor twice heading into the season. Three of Dawley s players at Vermont were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Women s Basketball First Team and Kotsopoulos became the third player in school history to be tabbed an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in Amy Rosenkrantz and Kotsopoulos were candidates for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Women s Basketball Award in back-to-back years, as well. In , Dawley s first year at Vermont, the Catamounts ranked 10th among Division-I teams selected to the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top-25 Team Honor Roll for Division-I. The award recognizes the nation s highest team grade point averages for that season. Prior to arriving at Vermont, Dawley spent 10 years as a member of the women s basketball staff at Dartmouth College. She served as an assistant coach from and was promoted to associate head coach under Chris Wielgus in July of Before joining the Dartmouth staff, Dawley served as head women s basketball coach at Tufts University for nine seasons, where she compiled a record of (.688). Dawley led the Jumbos to a Northeast Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship in just her third season ( ) and made the NIAC Championship Game in each of her first five seasons. The Jumbos advanced to the ECAC Championship semifinals in three of Dawley s final four seasons, the first postseason appearances in the program s history. In October of 2009, Dawley was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. She was one of two inductees in the Division-I College Women s Coaches category. 3 Opponent Information Scouting Saint Joseph s Women s Basketball The Saint Joseph s Hawks feature a 19-7 overall mark and 10-2 record in conference play entering competition with UMass on Wednesday. The Hawks are 9-4 at home, including wins in six of the last seven games at Hagan Arena. Saint Joseph s is led by veteran head coach Cindy Griffin, who is in the midst of her 12th year leading the program. Griffin found immediate success when she took over in 2001, finishing 24-8 during her first campaign en route to a record with the Hawks and overall mark. Chatil Van Grinsven leads the squad with 15.2 points per game and is coming off a contest against Fordham where the redshirt-senior produced 26 points and 13 rebounds during a overtime loss. Van Grinsven is connecting from the floor with a.422 clip ( ) and free throw line at 81-of-111 on the year (.730 FT pct.) while leading the squad with 10.5 boards per game and 37 blocks. Erin Shields follows by scoring 11.0 in each contest while dishing out 71 assists against only 32 turnovers committed this year while Natasha Cloud adds 4.2 assists (110) and 9.4 points per game. After opening the year 5-4 overall, Saint Joseph s has reeled off 14 wins in 17 contests on a combination of taking care of the basketball and shooting consistently well from the floor and free throw line. The Hawks have knocked down 628 of their 1555 field goal attempts (40.4 percent) and 301-of-405 foul shots (74.3 percent) while dishing out 396 assists against 363 turnovers. Last Time Against The Hawks Despite a career-high 14 points in 16 minutes from Kim Pierre-Louis, UMass came up short of Saint Joseph s in the teams A-10 opener, falling on Jan. 7, Joining Pierre-Louis as the high scorer for UMass (5-11, 0-1 A-10), Shakia Robinson totaled 14 points, while Carolann Cloutier contributed 10 points and handed out a game-high eight assists. The teams traded baskets to start before Saint Joseph s (10-4, 1-0) strung together an 8-0 run to lead 13-5 at the 15:17 mark. UMass had layups from Watson and Robinson to pull within 13-9, before the Hawks followed with a 9-2 stretch to lead by double figures for the first time, with 11:42 on the clock. A Robinson layup briefly brought the Minutewomen back to within six, but the Hawks stretched their lead to double digits for good as a Katie Kuester three at 9:33 began a 22-1 run for Saint Joseph s. The Hawks shot 33-for-66 (50%) from the floor, including an 8-for-16 (50%) clip from three, while UMass finished 22-for-51 (43.1%) overall and sunk 6-of-11 (54.5%) from beyond the arc. Rhode Island /0-14 (14th) *First year in Atlantic 10 Conference UMass Women s Basketball Game Notes» 4 Last Time Out: Second-Half Comeback Falls Shy Against Duquesne, UMass women s basketball cut a 12-point halftime deficit to three following the break; however, the Minutewomen were unable to complete the comeback against Duquesne, falling at the Mullins Center on Sunday afternoon. Senior center Jasmine Watson finished with 10 points to lead the squad, also pacing UMass with seven rebounds, five assists and a pair of blocks. Redshirt-junior guard Carolann Cloutier added seven points on 3-for-3 shooting from the floor while chipping in a trio of steals and classmate Kiara Bomben added five points and six rebounds in the forward s return to the floor following a lower-leg injury. The squads exchanged slim leads over the opening 15:21 of play, with neither side able to build an advantage larger than five during the span. Freshman guard Jasmine Harris, in the second start of her freshman year, knocked down a trey for UMass first points of the day, giving the home side a 3-2 lead 59 seconds into competition. While Duquesne was finding success on the boards, the Minutewomen kept even with strong shooting from the floor, hitting six of their initial 10 attempts, as the lead changed hands 10 times in the contest. After falling behind by four, 13-9, senior guard Dee Montgomery made an athletic move to left of the basket, driving through a group of Duquesne defenders to reach the hoop. Montgomery floated in a short, one-handed jumper from the paint as the senior was fouled to drop the deficit to two, knocking down the foul shot to pull UMass within Following Montgomery s play, Bomben connected on a three-pointer during the ensuing possession to place UMass in front by two with 11:59 remaining. Duquesne (20-6, 9-3) fought back with a 15-2 run to go ahead, at the 2:58 mark of play in the half, eventually earning a advantage entering the break. Despite trailing by 12 at the intermission, the Minutewomen defense lead UMass attempt to erase the margin during the final stanza, as Duquesne was only able to hit six field goals after halftime. The Minutewomen scored the first four points of the second on jumpers by freshman forward Rashida Timbilla and Watson to pull within eight, with 16:36 remaining. UMass continued to chip away at the Dukes lead, as sophomore guard Emily Mital answered with a three-pointer at 14:13 to knock the deficit down to after Wumi Agunbiade netted a pair of foul shots for Duquesne. Agunbiade drained a jumper on the other end of the floor before Cloutier and redshirt-sophomore Millie Niggeling followed up Mital s trey with three-pointers of their own. 5 UMass Women's Basketball Team Notes Among the 10 student-athletes competing in their first or second season on the floor with UMass, freshman Rashida Timbilla leads the Minutewomen with 29.6 minutes played per contest, placing second on the team with 8.6 points per game while leading UMass with 8.2 rebounds. Sophomore Emily Mital has started 24 of the 26 games she had played in, improving her scoring total from 2.7 in to 7.6 this year. Jasmine Harris, a threat from the perimeter off of the bench, has knocked down 24 treys in her first campaign of college basketball and owns five double-digit scoring performances to her name. Cleaning Glass Rashida Timbilla has shown a penchant for pulling down rebounds, especially on the offensive end of the floor during her first season of college basketball. Through 27 games, Timbilla owns 221 boards for an average of 8.2 per game, ranking the freshman from Ottawa, Ontario, seventh in the entire A-10 and first among all underclassmen through games of Sunday, Feb. 24. Timbilla s ability to grab rebounds specifically on offense leads her to own 98 offensive boards so far, the third-most in the conference, while her 3.6 per game average stands fourth among student-athletes in the A-10 and makes her the only underclassman qualifying for the top-15. Far from being a one-dimensional player, Timbilla has also developed a knack for knocking down shots, owning a 97-for-199 clip from the field (48.7 percent), and causing turnovers, earning 1.6 steals per game (43). Talented Duo Signs NLI s To Join UMass Women s Basketball Family The University of Massachusetts women s basketball program and head coach Sharon Dawley announced the signing of Kymber Hill and Meredith Tarver to letters of intent to play for the Minutewomen on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Hill is a member of the Althoff Catholic girl s basketball team that has averaged more than 20 wins per season during her freshman-through-junior campaigns with the squad while the allconference forward and center has lettered in each scholastic season. Tarver led Northview to a Georgia Region 5 Sweet 16 appearance in and entered her senior year as an all-region and all-metro honoree after averaging 14 points per game a season ago. All That Jas Senior Jasmine Watson, UMass top returning scorer, was named to the Preseason All-Atlantic 10 Second Team - the third consecutive year Watson has earned a spot on the all-conference listing released prior to the start of the season. Twenty-five games into the season, Watson has totaled 1,285 career points (12.0 ppg), 726 rebounds (6.8 rpg) and 171 blocks (1.6 bpg). Watson, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, is currently third on the program s all-time list for career stuffs and ranks second in blocked shots per game. Watson played in and started all 29 UMass contests in and paced the Minutewomen with 12.3 points and 7.3 rebounds during the campaign. Watson recorded a team-best 48 blocks, hit 49.0 percent of her field goal attempts (141-of-288) and averaged 28.7 minutes played per game. Defense Leads UMass To Victory Over George Washington UMass women s basketball used a stout defensive performance to secure a victory over George Washington to open A-10 Conference play at the Mullins Center on Saturday afternoon. Redshirt-junior Carolann Cloutier led four Minutewomen in double-figures with a season-high 13 points. Sophomore guard Emily Mital added 11 while senior center Jasmine Watson and sophomore forward Aisha Rodney each chipped in 10. Freshman forward Rashida Timbilla tallied a game-best 11 rebounds while totaling eight points and tying a career-high with five steals. Freshman guard Nola Henry finished 3-for-4 from the floor for seven points, also dishing out four assists and earning two steals. Rodney finished 5-for-5 from the field and pulled down five boards. Watson secured eight boards, leading all players with five off the offensive glass. After George Washington (6-9 overall, 0-1 A-10) raced to a 7-1 lead 2:10 into the contest, the Minutewomen defense settled in to hold the Colonials to just 14 points over the remaining 17:50 of the opening stanza. During the half, George Washington only hit 7-of-27 attempts from the field (25.9 percent), including finishing just 1-for-4 from behind the arc (25.0 percent). 6 UMass Women's Basketball Team Notes After GW tied the contest at with 8:34 remaining in the half, UMass finished out the frame with a 14-7 run to hold a lead at the half, an advantage the squad would not relinquish the rest of the way. Scoring was balanced across five Minutewomen as UMass doubled the GW output during the final eight and a half minutes. Rodney and Timbilla tallied four each while Mital produced three points on a jumper and free throw, Watson hit a layup and Cloutier connected on one foul shot. The Minutewomen grew their lead as high as 10 in the first half, with 3:39 remaining and finished the stanza ahead, After Danni Jackson hit 1-of-2 free throw attempts to pull George Washington within at the 5:33 mark, UMass went on a 7-0 run to pad the advantage. Timbilla drained a pair of foul shots while Watson followed with a layup and Mital was bumped while converting a shot at the basket, knocking down the ensuing free throw for the 10-point lead. After the Colonials moved to within three of tying again, UMass converted its attempts from the floor during the early minutes of the second half to re-take a double-digit lead, with 13:50 left to play. George Washington chipped away at its deficit until the Minutewomen held only a three-point advantage, with 39 seconds to play. However, after letting the shot clock tick down to single-digits, Henry drove to the left of the Colonials basket into the paint and used the backboard to drain her third shot of the day, putting UMass in front, with 13 seconds remaining. Jackson answered with a layup for the Colonials to again pull GW within three of tying, with six seconds remaining; however, Cloutier sank a free throw after being fouled on the inbounding play to reach the eventual final score, with three seconds remaining. Montgomery intercepted a long George Washington entry pass near midcourt to seal the win for UMass. The Minutewomen finished 23-for-52 from the floor (44.2 percent), hit 4-of-16 three-pointers (25.0 percent) and went 12-for-20 from the free throw line. 7 UMass Women's Basketball Team Notes Timbilla Named UMass Athlete Of The Week Freshman Rashida Timbilla was named UMass Athlete of the Week on Monday, Dec. 3, becoming the second Minutewoman from the basketball squad to earn the honor during the current season. Timbilla provided clutch play during a stretch of two games in the state of Ohio to secure the laurel, providing 11.5 points and 14.0 rebounds during the week. Averaging 34.5 minutes per game, Timbilla hit 10-of-24 field goal attempts (41.7 percent) while contributing five blocks, four assists and two steals as the Minutewomen claimed victory over Ohio, and fell to Miami (Ohio), Timbilla joins senior Jasmine Watson, who earned UMass Athlete of the Week on Nov. 12, as women s basketball s selections for the department-wide honor so far. Providing The Helping Hand Freshman point guard Nola Henry, called upon to fill in for injured senior Dee Montgomery, provided veteran caliber play in her first collegiate start, dishing out a careerhigh 11 assists against only four turnovers when UMass came within a buzzer-beater of downing Bowling Green on Dec. 19. Sophomore guard Emily Mital totaled 13 points, four rebounds and three assists while freshman guard Jasmine Harris added nine points and three boards. The UMass team total for blocks fell one shy of tying the program mark for most in a single game, tied most recently against St. Bonaventure on Feb. 27, UMass (2-5 overall) held a slim lead for the majority of the first half, taking a advantage into the break. After Ohio secured a 4-3 lead on a pair of Tina Fisher free throws with 17:00 to play in the first, the Minutewomen answered with a Kim Pierre-Louis layup to take the lead for good in the half at the 15:57 mark. 8 UMass Women's Basketball Team Notes Watson Named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week UMass women s basketball senior center Jasmine Watson was named the A-10 Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon. To secure the honor, Watson produced her 1,000th collegiate point while leading UMass to an drubbing of Kent State on Saturday during the season-opener for the Minutewomen. Watson finished the contest against the Golden Flashes with a team-high 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the floor and a 5-for-8 day at the free throw line. Watson also tallied eight rebounds while adding four blocks and four steals to the winning effort. Watson Tallies 1,000th Career Point Jasmine Watson opened her final campaign with the Minutewomen with a 21-point effort in UMass victory over Kent State, eclipsing the 1,000-point plateau with her final field goal attempt of the contest. 9 UMass Women's Basketball Team Notes Coming From Near And Far UMass 14-player roster is comprised of individuals from 10 different states and provinces, including four international student-athletes. Millie Niggeling is the first women s basketball student-athlete in program history from Iowa, while Canada is represented by three Minutewomen; Kim Pierre-Louis (Ontario), Carolann Cloutier (Quebec) and Rashida Timbilla (Ontario) and Kiara Bomben originally hails from Australia. Jasmine Harris, Adriana Jordan and Aisha Rodney represent Michigan while two players are from within the Massachusetts borders in Amber Dillon and Victoria Stewart. UMass also has one student-athlete each from Indiana (Jasmine Watson), New Jersey (Nola Henry), Tennessee (Dee Montgomery) and Texas (Emily Mital). New Minutewomen Faces The Minutewomen have six players that could see their first collegiate minutes in a UMass jersey this season, with five true-freshman and redshirt-junior transfer Kiara Bomben. The Australia native spent her first two seasons with Florida Gulf Coast before transferring and will be looked upon as a leader on an off the floor in as Bomben was named a captain with seniors Dee Montgomery and Jasmine Watson. The five true-freshman are Nola Henry, Jasmine Harris, Adriana Jordan, Victoria Stewart and Rashida Timbilla. Henry started at point guard for Trenton Catholic (N.J.) during the squad s run to the NJSIAA Non-Public 8 Championship in while Harris averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds for North Farmington (Mich.) as a senior in Jordan was twice named an all-state recipient at Port Huron (Mich.) and won the Nike National Championship with the U-15 Motor City Suns. Stewart is a local product, hailing from Amherst, and was named a Franklin-Hampshire County All-Star and Daily Hampshire Gazette First Team honor at Amherst-Pelham Regional. Timbilla played one year for prep school Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.) after attending John McCrae Secondary in Ontario, where she average more than 20 points and 14 rebounds per game in UMass Routs Kent State, In Season-Opener Senior center co-captain Jasmine Watson s 21 points led four scorers in double figures as the UMass women s basketball team rolled to a win over Kent State in the season opener at the Mullins Center on Sunday afternoon. Watson logged her 1,000th point in the contest to become the 18th player in program history to achieve the milestone. Watson, who went 8-for-11 from the floor in her 10th career 20-point game, also chipped in with eight rebounds, four blocks, four steals and three assists in 31 minutes on the floor. Sophomore Emily Mital followed with a career-best 16 points and was aided by a 4-for-6 afternoon from beyond the arc. In their debuts as Minutewomen, redshirt junior Kiara Bomben and freshman Rashida Timbilla both reached double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Timbilla also hauled in 10 boards to complete her double-double, including five on the offensive glass. Bomben snagged four steals and senior Dee Montgomery dished a career-best 11 assists, her second with 10 or more helpers. All 14 UMass players who dressed for the contest saw action with 11 draining buckets in the Minutewomen s highest scoring output since Nov. 28, 2010 at East Carolina. Redshirt sophomore Millie Niggeling paced the UMass bench with seven points, shooting a perfect 3-for-3 on the day. Kent State scored on its opening possession to lead 2-0 before the Minutewomen strung together a 13-2 run. Then the Golden Flashes answered with an 11-3 spurt to make it a one possession game at 16-13, with 11:12 to go in the first half. However, UMass drained four of its seven first-half treys in the final eight minutes of the period to help extend the lead to 15 at the break, The Minutewomen maintained the double-digit cushion following the intermission as Kent State could draw no closer than 13 the rest of the way. UMass led by 32 with 2:05 remaining, it s largest advantage of the day. Finishing the contest a blistering 33-for-54 from the floor, the Minutewomen shot 61.1% overall, the squad s best performance since facing Yale on Jan. 22, 2008 (33-for-52, 63.5%). UMass made 10-of-18 (55.6%) from long range and nearly doubled up the Golden Flashes on the boards, outrebounding Kent State, The Golden Flashes shot 39.3% (22-for-56) overall in the contest and had two scorers in double figures, Diamon Beckford with 15 points and Trisha Krewson with 11. Octavia Thomas Selected To UMass Hall Of Fame University of Massachusetts Athletics announced the five members of the 2012 Class that have been inducted into the UMass Hall of Fame, including former women s basketball star Octavia Thomas along with Cari Nickerson Lovejoy (Women s Lacrosse, ), Khari Mitchell-Samuel (Football, ), Tim Soudan (Men s Lacrosse, ) and Phil Vandersea (Football, ).
