9 UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS WOMEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES THREE STRAIGHT WITH SIX DIMES Leah McDerment produced the first set of three consecutive games with six or more assists by a Minutewoman in more than three seasons when she had six each at Rhode Island (Feb. 4) and La Salle (Feb. 7) before she dished out a career-high eight in the OT victory over George Mason (Feb. 11). Megan Zullo was the last Minutewoman with at least six assists in three straight games, a feat she accomplished against Rhode Island (six assists; Jan. 26, 2011), St. Bonaventure (six; Jan. 29, 2011) and Duquesne (10; Feb. 2, 2011). FREE THROWS HELP PUT THEM ON TOP The Minutewomen took more free throws than the opposition in 15-of-30 games last year, including each of the 12 victories. When foes earn a greater number of trips to the foul line UMass went VISION FROM BEYOND THE ARC On-target performances during A-10 play earned the Minutewomen the third-highest three-point field goal percentage among all conference teams (.346; 113-of-327) during the season. The improved accuracy also gave UMass the third-best percentage in league play (.352; 68-of-193). Emily Mital paved the way for the Minutewomen with 55 makes in 129 attempts (42.6 percent), the third-highest individual percentage in the A-10. She finished first in the league during A-10 play at 45.5 percent as Mital went 30-for-66 versus A-10 foes. KEEPING AN EXPANDED ROTATION Sharon Dawley used at least 10 of the 12 active student-athletes on the roster in all but four contests. Eight players averaged at least 10 minutes per game, led by Rashida Timbilla s 35.4 in each contest. Alyssa Lawrence redshirted as per NCAA transfer policy and was the only competitor on the 13-person roster not eligible to compete as a result while Alyx Stiff did not compete in the seven games due to injury. THE SAME STARTING FIVE UMass used the same starting five in 27 of 30 games last season, including the first 19 played. Leah McDerment served as the point guard, Cierra Dillard was the shooting guard, Rashida Timbilla held down guard/forward, Kim Pierre-Louis started at forward (No. 4) and Kymber Hill was the center. UMass was the only A-10 team to use the same starting five in each of the opening 19 games this season before the Minutewomen switched lineups for matchup purposes versus St. Bonaventure on Jan. 31. By comparison, in the Minutewomen used 10 different starting lineups. TEAM-WIDE ACCURACY UMass ranked third in the Atlantic 10 with its.407 field goal percentage as a team in Individually, five Minutewomen with a minimum of 45 shots attempted connected on at least 40.0 percent of their tries, led by Kim Pierre-Louis 53.3 conversion rate (221-of-415), ahead of Rashida Timbilla (.443; 102-of-230) and Amber Dillon (.417; 48-of-115). Ciara Rosten (.405; 40-of-74) and Maggie Mulligan (.404; 19-of-47). The squad shot above 42.0 percent as a group in 11 games, including eight of the 12 victories. THE BUDDY SYSTEM WORKS In the 12 victories last year, UMass averaged 15.2 assists (182) on 24.0 made field goals (288) in each contest. That gave the squad a dish on 63.3 percent of field goals made on average during each win. However, during the 18 losses, UMass only distributed 12.1 assists (218) on 20.9 shots converted (376), equivalent to 57.9 percent. ACCURACY & BOARDS A MUST Unsurprisingly, UMass secured wins in 11 of the 16 contests the Minutewomen earned a higher shooting percentage than their foes. They went 1-13 when the opposition shot better. Simultaneously, UMass was 10-5 when outrebounded foes and 2-13 when the squad was out-boarded. THE MINUTEWOMEN WHEN... As a result, UMass owned a edge in scoring within the paint, a 30.8-to per game margin, during those contests. The Minutewomen won the battle of the paint 19 times this year, including in 11 of the 12 victories. THERE S NO PLACE LIKE HOME UMass won eight times at home during , including victories over Maine, 69-60; Central Florida, 67-62; American, 71-61; Holy Cross, 72-61; La Salle, 71-68; George Mason in overtime, 85-79; Davidson, and Rhode Island, Kim Pierre-Louis averaged 24.0 points per game in those contests, followed by Cierra Dillard s 11.9 and Rashida Timbilla s 10.5 scored. Timbilla averaged a double-double at home with 10.0 rebounds while Pierre-Louis was close to Timbilla s level of production with 9.6 boards. As a team in those games, UMass shot 45.0 percent from the floor (202-of-449), including 37.0 percent from three-point land (30-of-81). They also outrebound foes at home, 41.0-to-34.6 on average. The official name of the facility is the John Francis Kennedy Champions Center For UMass Basketball. Kennedy is responsible for the lead gift to the project of $11 million. THE CANADIAN CONNECTION UMass has had eight Canadian players compete for the program in the history of the squad including Rashida Timbilla. The list also included sisters Alisha Tatham ( ) and Tamara Tatham ( ), Cleo Foster ( ), Carolann Cloutier ( ), JoAnn Dupuis ( ), Stephanie Lawrence ( ), and Kim Pierre-Louis ( ).
