The newcomers originate from five U.S. states and two other countries. This season marks head coach Tory Verdi s second at the helm of the Minutewomen. After a highly successful four-years at Eastern Michigan where he led the Eagles to a pair of NIT appearances in 2015 and 2016 and a total of 46 wins, Verdi was introduced on April 9, 2016 as the 11th head coach in program history. UMass returns four members of last year s squad in in sophomore guard Hailey Leidel, senior guard Leah McDerment and senior center Maggie Mulligan, all of whom cracked the starting five in In addition, junior guard Jessica George is back with the team. The Minutewomen welcome seven newcomers in in Alexia Allesch (Basking Ridge, N.J.), Autumn Giles (Fort Myers, Fla.), Bre Hampton-Bey (Toledo, Ohio), Paige McCormick (Ogdensburg, N.Y.), Vashnie Perry (Nashville, Tenn.) Genesis Rivera (Caracas, Venezuela) and Anil Soysal (Istanbul, Turkey). UMass lost the services of just one senior at the end of in guard Alyx Stiff. The Las Vegas native averaged just under 10 points per game in her final season, breaking into the starting five and draining 19 points in a home victory over Duquesne. Two tournaments help compose the schedule for UMass. The Minutewomen will host the UMass Thanksgiving Classic from Nov , hosting Liberty, Northeastern and Houston. The following weekend, the team will take part in the UTRGV Battle on the Border. The Minutewomen open the Atlantic 10 schedule on Dec. 31 at Duquesne, returning home on Jan. 3 against Fordham. Mulligan is expected to be one of the key pieces once again for the Minutewomen. After earning starts at center in all 30 games last season, the Boston native proceeded to average 37 minutes per game along with 13.9 points and 11.1 boards on a night-to-night basis. Her 20 double-doubles ranked second in the Atlantic 10 and sixth across the country. Also impressive last season was the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and now-sophomore Hailey Leidel. Originally from Brownstown, Michigan, Leidel averaged 15.5 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game, ranking fourth in scoring among all NCAA rookies. She also tied a UMass program record with 78 made 3-pointers. In spite of a 9-21 record last season and a 3-13 mark in the Atlantic 10, UMass made tremendous strides down the stretch with a limited roster size. The Minutewomen also dropped eight games by less than 10 points including a six-point setback in double overtime against George Washington. Projected Starting Line-Up And Reserves NO.
