After a highly successful four-years at Eastern Michigan where he led the Eagles to a pair of NIT appearances in 2015 and 2016 and a total of 46 wins in that span. Verdi was introduced on April 9 as the 11th head coach in program history. UMass will be led this season by senior guard Alyx Stiff, junior guard Leah McDerment, redshirt junior forward Alyssa Lawrence and junior center Maggie Mulligan as the top returning players. McDerment, Lawrence and Mulligan were all starters during the season. Five newcomers join the program for in guard Ryan Holder, abby Kenefick, Hailey Leidel, Ally Mahoney, and Taylor Tucker. UMass will look to replace the productivity of several key players from last season s squad including Rashida Timbilla who was one of the all-time best players at UMass. Timbilla became just the second player in program history to clear over 1,000 rebounds and finished her career ranked in the top-10 of 14 different statistical categories for the Minutewomen. The season will begin on Nov. 11 at Buffalo before UMass returns home to make its Mullins Center debut on Nov. 14 against North Dakota State. UMass will also play in two tournaments this season. The Minutewomen will head to Iowa City, Iowa on Nov to take on Iowa and either South Dakota State or Montana. UMass will also travel to Miami, Fla., to face Florida International and Drexel on Dec The Atlantic 10 schedule will begin on Dec. 4 against eorge Mason at the Mullins Center. Mulligan became a key player for the Minutewomen last year with several standout performances. She was named to the Omni Classic All-Tournament Team after averaing 10.5 rebounds and 6.5 points against Colorado and Ball State. She had a career day at Bryant scoring a personal-best 14 points on a perfect six-of-six shooting effort from the floor. She added four rebounds and a block. Lawrence will be UMass top returning scorer for The redshirt junior averaged 8.4 points and 4.6 rebounds last year after sitting out due to transfer rules. She had a season-high 20 points against Bryant and reached double-figures in games games with one double-double. Despite posting a record last year for the second consecutive season, several games were closer upon review. UMass had six losses decided by six-points or fewer and lost three overtime games including a seven-point decision on the road at Duquesne. The Minutewomen closed out the campaign with momentum as a five-game win streak carried the squad into the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Minutewomen defeated St. Bonaventure at home and picked up key road wins at Davidson and at Rhode Island as well. 6 UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS WOMEN S BASKETBALL COACHIN STAFF HEAD COACH TORY VERDI FIRST SEASON AT UMASS // FIFTH SEASON OVERALL // KEENE STATE COLLEE 96 New England native and 19-year coaching veteran Tory Verdi was named the 11th women s basketball head coach at the University of Massachusetts on April 9. This is a truly exciting time for our women s basketball program with the addition of Tory Verdi as our head coach, Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford said. Tory has a tremendous track record of success that will be a real asset for our program as we compete for Atlantic 10 Championships. His enthusiasm for building a winning culture that promotes success in the classroom, in competition and in the community makes him a great fit for the University of Massachusetts. Verdi arrives in Amherst with a head coaching record of after spending the previous four seasons at Eastern Michigan University. His teams advanced to the 2015 and 2016 Women s National Invitation Tournament, including a Round of 16 appearance, and the Mid-American Conference finals in An experienced coach at both the collegiate and professional levels, Verdi-coached teams have advanced to postseason play 13 of the last 15 seasons since Arriving in Ypsilanti for the season, he took an 8-22 squad to a record of in and in He also secured the MAC s No. 1 recruiting class twice during his tenure. I am thrilled to be the head coach at UMass, Verdi said. I knew the day that I stepped on campus that the University of Massachusetts was a special place. UMass women s basketball has all of the elements to build a championship-caliber program and provide an outstanding studentathlete experience. I am excited to take this program to the next level. Under Verdi, the MAC West Division preseason favorite Eagles made their mark in the EMU record books. Defensively, the squad totaled the fourth-most rebounds in a single season (1,364), while the team ranks seventh all-time in blocks (92) and third in steals (386). EMU s high-tempo offense poured in 2,445 points, the third-most in a single season in school history, along with dishing out 435 assists, good for seventh-most. Additionally, the Eagles converted 218 three-pointers, ranking fourth all-time and marking the third consecutive season in which EMU has made 200 or more triples. A large part Verdi s record-setting performance came from the Eagles late run during the regular season and into postseason play. EMU finished the regular season with wins in its final four games, while also winning seven of its last eight. The Eagles appeared in eight postseason games, winning six of them. The Eagles advanced to the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship, winning four-of-five MAC Tournament games, before advancing to the Sweet 16 of the 2015 Postseason WNIT. The Eagles rewrote the EMU record book with 124 different all-time top performances, including the most points 6 in a season (2,549), field goals made (936), rebounds (1,539) and threepointers made (223). Verdi spent the and seasons as the top assistant at the University of Kansas. The Jayhawks advanced to the 2012 NCAA Sweet Sixteen and the 2011 WNIT Second Round. Prior to his arrival in Lawrence, Verdi was an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska for five seasons ( ). 7 UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS WOMEN S BASKETBALL COACHIN STAFF SHEILA ROUX ASSISTANT COACH, RECRUITIN COORDINATOR // FIRST SEASON AT UMASS // MINNESOTA-CROOKSTON 00 A highly regarded recruiter and coach, Sheila Roux was named as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator on Tory Verdi s staff in May Roux joined the Massachusetts staff after three seasons at Columbia University and three seasons at Illinois State. She served as interim head coach at Columbia in the season prior to joining Verdi s staff, leading the Lions to their best non-conference record in school history (11-4) and third-best overall record in school history. Roux served as Columbia s associate head coach and recruiting coordinator in and assistant coach in The Lions 2015 recruiting class was ranked No. 1 in the Ivy League and No. 57 nationally by Collegiate irls Basketball Report. Additionally, all three of Roux s seasons at Illinois State resulted in post-season appearances, including the WNIT Final Four in With Roux serving in her first year as the Associate Head Coach, Columbia saw many firsts fall in as it posted the most victories in five seasons with an 8-20 overall record and 2-12 mark against the Ivies. During non-conference action, Columbia not only played in back-to-back overtime contests for the first time, but won both outings versus Rhode Island (Nov. 24) and Bradley (Nov. 26). To close out of league action, the Lions limited NJIT to 38 points, the fewest points allowed since keeping Skidmore at 32 in December Records fell throughout conference play as well. On Jan. 24, Columbia held Cornell to 46 points, the fewest points allowed in an Ivy League game since March 4, 2011 vs. Yale (W, 46-42). The Lions downed the Harvard Crimson, 59-43, Feb. 13, for the first time under the roof of Levien ymnasium in program history. For their efforts, the Lions garnered a program-best seven Ivy League weekly awards highlighted by Camille Zimmerman s six Rookie of the Week accolades, which is also a program first. In her first year on staff with the Lions, Roux helped lance become the second head coach in program history to win their first game as the floor general when the Lions downed LIU-Brooklyn Nov. 9, 2013 to open the season. The win also marked Columbia s first seasonopening victory in two seasons when the Lions downed Sacred Heart, During that first season on the bench, the Lions went 6-22 overall and 3-11 in Ivy League action. Prior to heading to the Lions, Roux has combined for over a decade of collegiate basketball experience as a coach and player. In May of 2010, Roux joined the Illinois State University coaching staff where she helped lead the Redbirds to a record-setting season in her first season as an assistant coach. Roux played a crucial role in the Redbirds success during the season, including the first undefeated Illinois State regular season at home in program history and also helped coach the Redbirds to their third-straight semifinal appearance in the Women s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The following season, Roux coached the Valley Newcomer of the Year, Jamie Russell, and helped guide ISU to its 11th appearance in the Postseason WNIT with an at-large bid. Prior to her time at ISU, Roux spent four seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Wisconsin-Milwaukee ( ), mentoring five All-Horizon League selections and two-time Horizon League Player of the Year Traci Edwards. Before heading to Milwaukee, Roux spent a season as the interim head coach at her alma mater Minnesota-Crookston. A four-year letterwinner for the Eagles ( ), she was a volunteer assistant coach during the season. While a player at UMC, Roux was named the school s Female Athlete of the Year in 2000 and graduated as the school s all-time leader in three-pointers (record broken in 2008). Roux also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at UW-Parkside from In 2005, the Rangers set a school record with 20 wins and made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Roux was a graduate assistant at South Dakota State from , the Jackrabbits posted an overall record of A member of Division II at the time, the Jackrabbits reached the NCAA Tournament Semifinals in In 2003, SDSU won the Division II National Championship. 8 UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS WOMEN S BASKETBALL COACHIN STAFF DANNY HUHES ASSISTANT COACH // FIRST SEASON AT UMASS // TCU 90 A veteran collegiate coach, Danny Hughes was named as assistant coach to Tory Verdi s staff in May Hughes arrives in Amherst after spending the previous seven seasons at SMU. His previous Division I stops also include St. John s ( ) and University of Houston ( ). He was interim head coach at UH for the season. During Hughes time at SMU, he was part of a staff that helped lead the Mustangs to back-to-back postseason appearances after a twoyear stretch of sub-.500 records. SMU won the Conference USA Championship with C-USA Player of the Year Keena Mays. While an assistant for the Red Storm in , he helped guide the team to the third round of the WNIT, marking just the second time in program history St. John s had advanced that far. Hughes duties included working with the guards, and he was able to help shooting guard Monique McLean garner an All-Big East second-team selection. Before going to St. John s, Hughes spent three seasons at Houston. While with the Cougars, he was responsible for all aspects of recruiting while also overseeing compliance, fundraising, practice and game preparation, as well as coordination of all scouting reports. During the 2008 season, Hughes served as the program s interim head coach, leading Houston to a mark, its best record in three years. Hughes took the reins of the team only nine days before the start of the season, after UH head coach Joe Curl took a leave of absence for health reasons. During his tenure as head coach, the Cougars ran off an eight-game consecutive conference win streak, their longest since Hughes guided the Cougars to a first-round bye in the Conference-USA tournament, its first in three years. Prior to Houston, Hughes was an assistant at Trinity Valley Community College for five years, Hughes handled recruiting duties as well as overseeing the team s academic progress. While coaching TVCC, the team made the Region XIV playoffs three times and included the top junior college player in America in From , Hughes served as athletic director and men s basketball coach at Cross Roads High School in his hometown of Malakoff, Texas. He led his squad to a 24-6 record and a state playoff appearance in his first season at the helm. His coaching record was and his success as athletic director enabled Hughes to be the first inductee in the school s athletic hall of fame in During Hughes second trip to Trinity Valley from he worked with the men s squad. Hughes worked with guards and post players while handling recruiting responsibilities for the state of Texas during the season. Hughes began his coaching career at Sam Houston State University as a graduate assistant from During his time with the Bearkats, he worked with the guards and wings while assisting with scouting and recruiting duties. A former standout player at TCU, Hughes was one of the most prolific three-point shooters in school history. In two seasons ( ), Hughes shot 45 percent ( ) from behind the arc, a mark that ranks third on the Horned Frogs career list. His single-season best of 45.2 percent (70-155) during the campaign ranks second on TCU s single-season chart. The two-year starter at shooting guard was a two-time winner of the Jim Killingsworth MVP award, given to the top men s basketball player that season. Prior to his arrival at TCU, Hughes was an all-region and all-league player at Trinity Valley Community College, where he helped lead his team to a record from During his sophomore season, he earned MVP honors while averaging 14.6 points and 6.4 assists per game. He was also selected to play on the National Junior College All-Star Team, comprised of the top-12 junior college players in the country. In August of 2010, Hughes was elected to TVCC s Hall of Fame. Hughes is married to Quinn Tedder-Hughes and has two daughters, riffin and rayson. CANDICE WALKER ASSISTANT COACH // SECOND SEASON AT UMASS // LOYOLA (MD) 11 A dynamic young coach, Candice Walker enters her second season with the UMass women s basketball program after being announced as an assistant coach for Tory Verdi s staff in May Prior to her elevation to assistant coach, she spent the campaign as the program s director of operations. In her role as the director of operations, Walker was charged with all facets of program organization including daily operations, travel, practice preparation and film analysis. Before her time with UMass, Walker spent the and seasons as an assistant coach at Wilmington University (Del.). She also coached with Point uard College after graduating from Loyola University (Md.) in While at Loyola, Walker earned a bachelor s degree in 2011 before she attended graduate school while competing in 117 games for the program, the sixth-most by any student-athlete in Loyola women s basketball history. She led all Mid-American Conference rookies in points and assists as a freshman during the campaign en route to MAAC All-Rookie Team honors; however, injuries derailed her and seasons.
