Rashida Timbilla joined Pierre-Louis in scoring double-digits with 10 points and led the Minutewomen with five assists while she grabbed four rebounds. Pierre-Louis scored in double-figures for the fifth consecutive game and the 10th over the previous 11 contests with the junior averages 14.8 points per contest in four Atlantic 10 games. Combined, Pierre-Louis and Timbilla finished 12-of-22 on field goal attempts (54.5 percent). Raegan Moore tied with Pierre-Louis for the game high in points with 17 while Wumi Agunbiade scored 14 for the Dukes and Olivia Bresnahan tallied 11 more. Agunbiade pulled down 11 rebounds to earn a double-double. Defensive efforts on both ends of the court kept the contest low scoring over the opening 12 minutes of the game. Duquesne took a 14-4 lead on a Bresnahan layup with 14 minutes, 20 seconds left in the opening half; however, buckets by Kiara Bomben and Nola Henry brought the Minutewomen within Bomben drove the lane and used a right-handed layup to notch her first points of the evening while Henry pulled up in the paint for a jumper. The Dukes used an 11-4 run spanning 3:28 of game action to pad their lead to with 6:07 left in the half, spurred on by four different scorers during the stretch. The Minutewomen cut their deficit to at the break on the strength of accurate shooting by Pierre-Louis and Timbilla. Pierre-Louis finished the half 5-for-7 for 10 points while Timbilla scored eight more via four makes in seven attempts. After the Dukes scored the opening four points of the second half to extend their lead to the Minutewomen played even with Duquesne throughout the remainder of the contest. The second stanza featured a more balanced scoring approach from the Minutewomen as Pierre-Louis had seven, Kymber Hill scored all six of her points during the frame and Mital finished with five. However, the Minutewomen were unable to pull closer than within 11 points during the final half. With Duquesne up 43-29, Mital hit her only three-pointer of the game to drop the margin to with 15:48 left in the game. 4 Massachusetts Women s Basketball Opponent Information Scouting The VCU Rams After starting the season 14-1, including a home victory over Massachusetts, VCU women s basketball has dropped two of its previous three contests to sit at 15-3 overall and 3-2 in A-10 games entering its second contest against UMass this season. The Rams dropped their most recent game, a loss to Fordham and also fell to La Salle, Their conference wins include a victory over Saint Joseph s, win at Duquesne and decision over the Minutewomen. Robyn Parks continues to be the dominant scorer and rebounder for the Rams as she averages 22.7 points and 9.6 boards per game over 18 appearances, including 17 starts. Parks is equally as impressive in conference-only games as she provides 21.1 points and 8.8 rebounds through five A-10 contests. Isis Thorpe adds 13.1 points while Keira Robinson notches 13.1 mote to go with 6.7 assists and 3.2 boards per appearance. Overall, VCU leads the opposition in points per game (80.4-to-67.2), rebounds per game (41.4-to-40.6), assists ( ) and steals ( ). Last Meeting: VCU 112, Massachusetts 54; Jan. 2, 2014 UMass was unable to keep pace with the shooting of an on-target Virginia Commonwealth University squad as VCU defeated the Minutewomen, at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Richmond, Va., on Thursday, Jan. 2, Jasmine Harris led the Minutewomen with 15 points and added four rebounds to go with a pair of steals. Kim Pierre-Louis ended the contest one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. Kiara Bomben provided eight points, five rebounds and a pair of assists. VCU hit seven of its first eight field goal attempts, including a trio of three-pointers, to race out to a 17-3 lead with 16 minutes, 47 seconds left in the opening half. The Rams offense did not let up throughout the frame as the squad finished 24-of-38 from the floor (63.2 percent) to hold a advantage entering the break. Pierre-Louis netted eight of her points in the second half to surpass double-figures in scoring for the ninth time this season and sixth during the previous seven contests. Five of those points came in succession over a span of only 27 seconds. The Ottawa, Ontario, native was hit while converting a jumper and drained the ensuing free throw to make it at the 13:45 mark. She drew another foul on the next UMass trip down the court and swished both attempts from the charity stripe. However, the Rams continued their accurate shooting from the floor during the remainder of the game as the home squad finished 41-of-80 overall (51.3 percent) and 14-for-32 from beyond the arc (43.8 percent). 5 University of Massachusetts Women s Basketball Game Notes Mital Stopping And Popping Her Way Into The Record Book In her third year as a Minutewoman Emily Mital has hit 91 career three-pointers for the Maroon and White, the 12th-most made treys in the history of the program. Her junior season success earned her the spot on UMass all-time leaderboard for made three-pointers as she is 35-for-85 (41.2 percent) with 12 games left to play. Mital needs to make three more attempts to pass Pam Rosanio for 11th. As a sophomore in , Mital hit 48 of her 151 tries from long distance (31.8 percent) after she finished 8-of-39 in the category as a freshman (20.5 percent). She is also ninth all-time in three-point field goal attempts (275) and her made percentage (.331) puts her in 11th place in the record book for the category currently. She Gets Buckets Kim Pierre-Louis has provided a consistent shot in and around the paint as a junior in , leading her to hold the sixth-highest field goal percentage in the Atlantic 10 with 93 makes in 182 attempts from the floor (51.1 percent). Her percentage makes her one of only six Atlantic 10 women s basketball players to qualify for the top-15 with a mark about 50.0 percent. For her career, Pierre-Louis has never shot less than 44.4 percent for a season and has made 138 of her 284 attempts as a Minutewoman (47.5 percent). She was 20-of-43 as a freshman (46.5 percent) and 32-for-72 over her sophomore campaign (48.8 percent). Taking Care Of The Rock Despite drawing two defenders at times, Rashida Timbilla has taken care of the ball through 16 appearances as a sophomore to earn a 1.4 assist-to-turnover ratio, the ninth-best mark in the Atlantic 10. Timbilla has turned it over 33 times but has dished out 46 assists - the most among all Minutewomen - to counter the turnovers. She has led or tied for the team-high among Minutewomen in assists in eight contests this season and is averaging a team-high 3.1 per game, which is the 13th-most per game in the conference. Timbilla is the only forward to earn a spot on the conference s top-15 for assist-to-turnover ratio and assists per game. Skying FOr THe Rebound Nola Henry has provided an average of 5.6 rebounds per game during the previous nine contests after only pulling down an average of 2.4 per game during the first 37 games of her UMass career. Her recent success in the category led the 5-foot-7 starting point guard to bump her career average to 3.0 rebounds per game through 46 appearances. Henry already has 14 offensive boards this season, including 10 during the last nine games, in comparison to just 14 earned over 28 appearances as a freshman in Her 69 rebounds through 18 appearances this year ties her with what she accrued over the course of her entire freshman year. Pierre-Louis Then Vs. Now One season removed from playing sparingly as a sophomore, Kim Pierre-Louis has established herself as a strong around-the-basket scoring threat through 18 games as a junior in Pierre- Louis currently leads the Minutewomen with 12.8 points per game due to holding the sixth-highest field goal percentage in the Atlantic 10 Conference at 51.1 percent (93-of-182). In comparison, during her sophomore season Pierre-Louis only produced 4.4 points per game while shooting 32-of-72 on field goal attempts (44.4 percent) and 19-of-28 on free throws (67.9 percent). Dialed In From Distance Emily Mital is providing a consistent presence from beyond the arc as a junior in as she is hitting 41.2 percent of her attempts from long distance (35-of-85), the seventh-highest percentage in the Atlantic 10 Conference. She also ranks eighth in the A-10 for made three-point field goals per game (1.9), which is only 1.0 behind second-place Andrea Hoover of Dayton. Mital has improved her three-point conversion rate over each of her three seasons at UMass. She connected on 20.5 percent as a freshman (8-of-39) and was 48-for-151 as a sophomore (31.8 percent). Center on Dec. 17. Kim Pierre-Louis led the Minutewomen with 18 points on an 8-for-14 performance from the floor to go with two free throws. Jasmine Harris and Emily Mital joined Pierre-Louis in double-digits with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Mital added four assists to lead the team and tie for the game high. Nola Henry contributed nine points - all in the second half - and eight rebounds and Paula Tarnachowicz chipped in six points on a 3-for-4 day on field goal attempts to go with seven boards. Down by as much as six in the second half, 39-33, the Minutewomen used a 14-3 run to move in front, with 12:15 left to play. Pierre- Louis started the stretch with a layup before Henry added a basket at the rim. Pierre-Louis secured the next five UMass points of the game to turn a deficit into a advantage. Larissa Lurken answered for Kent State, hitting the back-end of two free throws before knocking down a jumper during the Golden Flashes ensuing chance down the floor to even the game at However, Harris drew a foul and hit both attempts at the foul line and Mital knocked down a three-pointer to push the Minutewomen in front for good, Kent State cut its deficit as slim as one point, with 8:28 to play, but Mital silenced the rally with a trey immediately. The Minutewomen added to their lead with a strong free throw performance during the final six minutes of the game. UMass hit 12 of its last 16 free throws to keep the pressing Golden Flashes at bay. UMass Fights Back For Win At Hartford Coming off of a thrilling upset win over Rutgers, UMass made it backto-back victories when the squad took a game from Hartford on the road at Chase Family Arena on Saturday, Nov. 23. Kim Pierre- Louis sparked the offense with a career-high 19 points, 17 of which were scored during the pivotal second half, and personal-best nine rebounds. Emily Mital and Kiara Bomben scored 12 and 10 points, respectively to boost the offense. The Hawks led by as much as eight points, with nine minutes, 37 seconds left in the game before the Minutewomen offense rallied to pull ahead down the stretch. Pierre-Louis started an 11-point run for UMass moments after the squad went down by eight as she fought her way to the hoop, drew a foul, connected on a layup and drained the ensuing free throw. Harris then stretched the defense with back-to-back three-pointers to give the Minutewomen their first lead of the half, with 7:18 to play. Two trips down the floor later, Pierre-Louis added another layup to her tally for the game to cap the streak and extend UMass advantage to After Alyssa Englert broke Hartford s scoreless drought with a free throw, Mital provided a clutch three-pointer from the right side to increase the lead back to four, Hartford had forced the Minutewomen into an inbounds play from the baseline as one second remained on the shot clock. The ball was fired out to Mital beyond the arc and the junior caught and released in one motion before her shot swished through the net with 4:28 left. The advantage would dwindle to just two points, with exactly two minutes to play in the game after Amber Bepko nailed a jumper for the Hawks. However, the UMass defense pressured Hartford into a pair of missed shots and one turnover in the home squad s final possessions to hold on. Pierre-Louis provided the last points of the game on a set of free throws with two seconds remaining to reach the final score.

7 University of Massachusetts Women s Basketball Coaching Staff Head Coach SHARON DAWLEY FOurth Season At UMass // 20th Season As Head Coach Overall // St. Anselm 83 Sharon Dawley was named as the 10th head coach in the history of the University of Massachusetts women s basketball program on April 6, 2010, and begins her fourth season at the helm for the Minutewomen in In her first season in Amherst, Dawley coached her squad to one of the best three point shooting percentages in the country, highlighted by Cerie Mosgrove, who led the nation with 49.7 percent clip from beyond the arc. Mosgrove, one of several Minutewomen who enjoyed career years under Dawley s guidance in , went on to win the National Women s Three-Point Shooting Championship at the men s Final Four in Houston, Texas. Dawley came to UMass after a highly successful tenure with the Catamounts that included two consecutive America East Championships ( and ) and three straight postseason berths. In seven seasons at Vermont, Dawley posted a mark of (.598) and holds a career record of (.565) through 19 seasons as a head coach. She became the winningest coach in Vermont women s basketball history when the Catamounts upset No. 7-seed Wisconsin in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on March, 21, 2010, the program s first NCAA tournament victory. Under Dawley s guidance, the University of Vermont earned an automatic NCAA Tournament berth as a No. 10 seed after successfully defending its America East Conference Tournament Title in The Catamounts defeated top-seeded and No. 21-nationally ranked Hartford in the conference championship game, UVM posted a record of 27-7 that season, the third-highest wins total for the program all-time, and led the nation with 18 road victories. Dawley earned her 100th career win at Vermont with a victory over Hartford in the semifinals of the 2009 America East Championship as UVM went on to capture its first conference title since The Catamounts made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in nine years where the squad fell to eventual national champion Connecticut. During Dawley s tenure on the Vermont sidelines, 23 of the 28 players that took the floor for the veteran leader earned either academic and/or athletic accolades from America East. She coached an America East Player of the Year, a Defensive Player of the Year, a Rookie of the Year, a two-time Scholar-Athlete and a two-time Most Outstanding Player at the America East Tournament. Under Dawley s direction, the Catamounts earned six all-conference selections, four all-rookie nods and two all-academic team honors. 7 In , Dawley guided Vermont to one of its best seasons in the program s existence. The Catamounts went 24-9 overall, recording the fourth most wins all-time, and were the America East runners-up during the regular season with a 13-3 league mark. UVM also earned its second trip to the Postseason WNIT Tournament in school history and the first postseason appearance in Dawley s tenure. The Catamounts drew regional rival Dartmouth in the first round of the 2008 WNIT and Dawley faced her former mentor Chris Wielgus on the opposing sideline. Vermont defeated the Big Green to earn the team s third postseason victory all-time and advanced to the second round of the WNIT for the second time in the program s annals. In Dawley led UVM to a record and a third place finish in America East. She guided the Catamounts to a 13-3 start and the year was highlighted with Vermont s first-ever win over a ranked opponent when the Catamounts upset No. 22 Boston College in the championship game of the URI Invitational. 8 University of Massachusetts Women s Basketball Coaching Staff After being picked to finish eighth in the league s preseason poll, Dawley coached Vermont to a No. 3 seed in the America East Championship and the Catamounts advanced to the semifinals. The Catamounts were also named one of the most improved teams in the country at the Division I level following the campaign. In Dawley s first season on the Vermont sidelines ( ), she posted the best start by a first-year head coach at Vermont, guiding the Catamounts to a 6-2 mark to begin the season. Vermont finished the year with a record of and wrapped up the regular season with victories over No. 1 Maine, No. 2 Binghamton and No. 4 Albany on the road. Vermont s victory at Maine snapped the Black Bear s 31-game conference win streak. Under Dawley s guidance, the Vermont women s basketball team also enjoyed success in the classroom. During her seven years at the helm of the Catamounts, her student-athletes earned 55 America East Academic Honor Roll citations, including 23 nominations to the America East Commissioner s Academic Honor Roll for achieving a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. On Dawley s watch, May Kotsopoulos earned the America East Women s Basketball Scholar-Athlete honor twice heading into the season. Three of Dawley s players at Vermont were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Women s Basketball First Team and Kotsopoulos became the third player in school history to be tabbed an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in Amy Rosenkrantz `09 and Kotsopoulos were candidates for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Women s Basketball Award in back-to-back years, as well. In , Dawley s first year at Vermont, the Catamounts ranked 10th out of the top 25 Division I teams selected to the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for Division I. The award recognizes the nation s highest team grade point averages for that season. Prior to arriving at Vermont, Dawley spent 10 years as a member of the women s basketball staff at Dartmouth College. She served as an assistant coach from and was promoted to associate head coach under Chris Wielgus in July of Dawley teamed with Wielgus - now the director of operations for UMass - to lead the Big Green to a trio of NCAA Tournament appearances while routinely competing for the top spot in the Ivy League. Dartmouth experienced its best season during Dawley s time with the school in , when the program won 20 games and made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Big Green also posted at least 15 victories in six more seasons with Dawley mentoring the squad alongside Wielgus. Before joining the Dartmouth staff, Dawley served as head women s basketball coach at Tufts University for nine seasons. She compiled a (.688) record with the program, which she took over as the head coach of only one year after graduating from St. Anselm in Dawley led the Jumbos to a Northeast Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship in just her third season ( ). Tufts reached the NIAC title game in her first five seasons. The Jumbos advanced to the ECAC Championship semifinals in three of Dawley s final four seasons, the first postseason appearances in the program s history. In October of 2009, Dawley was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. She was one of two inductees in the Division I College Women s Coaches category. Pierre-Louis rebounding total marks the most in a single game for one Minutewoman since Kate Mills pulled down 19 against Dayton on March 7, 2008, a span of 161 games. Henry Earns All-Tournament Team Honor Nola Henry was chosen to the Blue Sky Classic All-Tournament Team on Monday, Dec. 30, following the final game of the event. Henry earned her spot on the list due in part to averaging 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per appearance in the two-game event, including a single-game personal-best 19 points against host-dartmouth on Dec. 30 following a career-high nine rebounds versus Binghamton during the day before. Taking Down A Women s Basketball Giant To earn its first win of the season, UMass stunned Rutgers, at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass., on Wed., Nov. 20. The Scarlet Knights entered the contest undefeated and were receiving votes in the by the Associated Press and USA Today coaches top-25 polls. Rashida Timbilla led the charge with her first double-double of the year and the seventh of her UMass tenure on a career-high-tying 17 points to go with 12 rebounds. Three additional Minutewomen joined Timbilla in scoring double-figures as Kymber Hill, Emily Mital and Kim Pierre-Louis each chipped in 10 points. Leading at halftime, after Amber Dillon drained a shot at the buzzer, UMass extended its hold to as much as 11 multiple times in the final stanza before needing to survive a late Rutgers push. 11 University of Massachusetts Women s Basketball Game Notes Surpassing The 25-Point Plateau Rashida Timbilla recorded her ninth career double-double and the second of her sophomore season with 25 points and 13 rebounds against William & Mary on Saturday, Nov. 30. With her scoring total, Timbilla became the first Minutewoman to record 25 or more points in a game since recent graduate Jasmine Watson earned 25 against Charlotte on March 4, Harris Chosen As WBCA AllState Good Works Nominee The Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and the Allstate Insurance Company announced Jasmine Harris as one of the 202 nominees, 52 from NCAA D-I women s basketball programs, for the 2014 Allstate WBCA and NABC Good Works Teams on Tuesday, Dec. 3. The award, in its second year, recognizes men s and women s collegiate basketball players who have made significant contributions to the greater good of their communities through volunteerism and civic service. From the 84 WBCA nominees and 117 NABC nominees submitted by coaches and sports information directors across the nation on behalf of their schools, special voting panels will select two 10-member teams comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA Division I level and five student-athletes from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February. Harris was accepted as a nominee due to her commitment to assisting the local and regional community. She is a coordinator of activities for Team IMPACT, which has a mission to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses. Harris also volunteered at the Holyoke Boys & Girls club during the summer of 2013 along with her UMass teammates and involved herself in the opening ceremonies, including the torch run, of the Massachusetts Special Olympics with other Minutemen and Minutewomen alongside the event s participants. Bench Production Amped Up UMass women s basketball has received strong production from its bench personnel through 18 games, led by the emergence of junior forward Kim Pierre-Louis as a scoring threat around the basket. The Minutewomen reserves have averaged 20.5 points per game so far, notching at least 20 points in eight individual contests, including a season-high 42 scored at Holy Cross Hart Center on Nov. 26. After receiving the starting nod in the season-opener against Western Michigan, Pierre-Louis provided a spark as the sixth-woman for UMass prior to returning to the starting five against Boston University on Dec 4. Pierre-Louis also came off of the bench at the Blue Sky Classic against Binghamton on Dec. 29 and Dartmouth on Dec. 30 as well as each of the three Atlantic 10 Conference games. As a non-starter, the Ottawa, Ontario, native averages 11.9 points per appearance, hitting 64-of-123 field goal attempts (52.o percent) taken after subbing in from the bench over 16.7 minutes per appearance during her 13 non-starts. The sophomore forward also chipped in nine assists and a trio of steals while she shot 61.9 percent from the floor (13-of-21). Timbilla netted six points and pulled down a dozen rebounds at Maine on Friday, Nov. 29 before providing a career-best 25 points to go with 13 rebounds in the finale against William & Mary one day later. Watson Signs To Play For ACS Sepsi Former UMass women s basketball student-athlete Jasmine Watson ( ) will begin her professional playing career in Romania with ACS Sepsi. Watson joins a program competing in the EuroCup after finishing its most recent season in fourth place among teams playing as part of the Liga Nationala, the top division in Romania. During four years at UMass, Watson accumulated 1,291 points, 731 rebounds and 175 blocks in 109 appearances, including 94 starts. The South Bend, Ind., native s scoring average of 11.8 per game stands 14th all-time at Massachusetts while her 6.7 rebounds per contest place Watson 10th in UMass women s basketball history. 11

12 University of Massachusetts Women s Basketball Game Notes Wielgus Joins UMass As Director of OpErations The University of Massachusetts women s basketball program and head coach Sharon Dawley announced the addition of Chris Wielgus to the Minutewomen staff as the Director of Operations on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Wielgus brings more than three decades of experience to the UMass program; including 30 seasons as a head coach at the NCAA Division I level. At UMass, Wielgus main responsibility will be overseeing the day-to-day functionality of the program. An elite coach at Fordham ( ) and Dartmouth ( ; ), Wielgus (pronounced well-gus) recorded a dozen Ivy League Championships, one Patriot League Title, seven NCAA Tournament appearances and a pair of berths in the WNIT. Over 28 seasons leading the Big Green, Wielgus became the most successful head coach in the history of the program, amassing 393 victories and 20 winning seasons during her tenure. Dawley and Wielgus previously worked together on the Dartmouth staff for 10 campaigns from Dawley was an assistant coach under Wielgus from before being promoted to associate head coach in anticipation of the season. Together, the duo helped lead Dartmouth to a trio of NCAA Tournament appearances and 153 victories before Dawley was named the head coach at Vermont in McMorris Named Graduate Assistant UMass women s basketball program and head coach Sharon Dawley announced Tatiyiana McMorris as a graduate assistant on Thursday, Oct. 3. McMorris, who competed at Marquette with the Golden Eagles from , will help in all aspects of the team, with an emphasis on the program s video necessities and the film-sharing system. At Marquette, the Bronx, N.Y., native played in 130 career games and made 66 starts. She ranks fourth all-time at the school in three-point field goal percentage (.371), tied for fourth in appearances, tied for sixth in made three-pointers (152) and eight for total three-point attempts (410). During her tenure, Marquette won 79 games, including the 2008 WNIT Championship, while making a national postseason appearance during each campaign. In addition to her collegiate experience, McMorris was an assistant coach at Sussex Hamilton High School in Sussex, Wis., in , and led the 13u Ring City AAU team, based in New Jersey during its 2012 season. A Youthful Approach With only one senior on the roster in Kiara Bomben, the UMass women s basketball squad features a youthful lineup during the season. Nine of the 13 players will be in their first or second year of competing at the collegiate level while the sophomore class, comprised of six individuals, is the largest overall. UMass also has three freshmen and a trio of juniors, including transfer Paula Tarnachowicz, to round out the group. The current sophomore class earned valuable minutes during the season, a campaign in which the squad also featured a youthful cast. Over the year, underclassmen played 62.0 percent of the total minutes (3,463-of-5,800), earned 1,004 of the 1,636 points scored (61.4 percent) and grabbed 736-of-1,096 rebounds (67.2 percent). Richmond Coliseum To Host Atlantic 10 Championship The Atlantic 10 Conference announced its women s basketball championship will move to the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va., on Thursday, Sept. 19, effective for the upcoming 2014 edition. Slated to host 13 teams, the event will take place from March 5-9. The championship will open with a play-in game on Wednesday, March 5, followed by four first-round games on Thursday. The four quarterfinal games will tip off Friday followed by the semifinal round on Saturday, which will be televised live nationally on CBS Sports Network. The finals will air live on ESPNU beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. When the championship begins in Richmond, it will mark just the third time in its 32-year history that it will take place at a neutral site. Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass., played host in 2011, while Showplace Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md., served as host in The Atlantic 10 is one of only eight conferences (out of 31 league) where the women s basketball championship will be played at a neutral site, separate from the men s championship. 14 University of Massachusetts Women s Basketball Game Notes Tamara Tatham Represents Team Canada At FIBA Americas The Canadian Women s Basketball National Team and head coach Lisa Thomaidis announced former UMass women s basketball standout Tamara Tatham ( ) as one of the 12 athletes chosen to represent the country at the FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico. Tatham competed for Team Canada at the international tournament from Sept as the squad finished 5-1 overall and earned a silver medal. Taking place in Xalapa, Mexico, the tournament featured national programs from the Americas. Canada opened against Jamaica with a win on Sunday, Sept. 22, and beat Chile, on Sept. 23. The Canadians drubbed Venezuela, the following day and close preliminary play with a victory over Cuba on Sept. 25. To advance to the gold medal game, Team Canada defeated Puerto Rico, 73-48, which simultaneously qualified the program for the 2014 FIBA World Championship. The Cuban National Team got the best of the Canadian side in the tournament finale, The Canadian National Team earned bronze medals during each of the previous four years competing at the FIBA Americas Championship. Tatham finished with 1,186 career points at UMass, averaging 10.3 per game played. The Toronto, Ontario, native also pulled down 754 rebounds and dished out 226 assists over 115 appearances and 112 starts for the Minutewomen. Basketball Champions Center Construction BeginS The UMass Athletic Department began its latest construction project during the beginning days of August when building the Basketball Champions Center began. The fencing surrounding the location of construction was put in place while existing light fixtures illuminating the surrounding athletic fields have been removed. The facility is scheduled to be completed by Fall 2014 and will give the basketball programs a dedicated practice and training facility. At $28.5 million, it will be a 53,000 square foot complex that will be the new home for program daily operations. The ground floor will consist of the primary player development areas of the facility. In addition to the two full-size practice courts, the lower level will house the player s lounge and locker rooms, the sports medicine and weight rooms, theater-style film room, dining area, laundry facilities and equipment storage A Legacy Hall dedicated to the tradition and history of both programs will run the length of the East corridor and lead to a tunnel connecting the Champions Center to the Mullins Center. The upper level will consist of office suites and conference rooms for both programs, and an entry foyer with a VIP lounge and balcony overlooking both practice courts. A live Internet web stream will go online in the coming months to track the progress. Both basketball and football projects are slated to be online and ready for use in Summer/Fall 2014 and represent what has been a major facility enhancement effort for athletics over the last decade. Four Join UMass Women s Basketball For Season Four newcomers will make their Minutewomen debuts during the season, including freshmen Kymber Hill, Alyx Stiff and Meredith Tarver, along with junior college transfer Paula Tarnachowicz. Hill is coming off of a four-year career with the Althoff Catholic Crusaders, where she helped the program accumulate three conference titles. Stiff, a 5-foot-9 guard, averaged 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals as a senior at Quest Preparatory Academy while being named a top-20 underclassman and Next Level Elite 100 Phenom during her scholastic career. Tarver was an all-region and North Fulton All-Metro Team honoree at Northview High School while helping the Georgia Pistols AAU program to a division championship. Joining the trio of freshmen newcomers is Tarnachowicz, a transfer from Panola College in Carthage, Texas. While at Panola College, the Gdynia, Poland, native helped the squad to a Region XIV Conference Tournament appearance while hitting 44.2 percent of her field goal attempts. 14
