2007 Outlook... FOCUS, FIGHT, FINISH With 12 letterwinners returning and three talented incoming freshmen, expectations for the 2007 season in Auburn are very high. We have this team prepared to win, Thompson said. The Tigers will be looking to build off of a 2006 season that featured a fourth straight trip to the NCAA Regionals. For the second year in a row, Auburn was able to qualify at least two gymnasts for the NCAA Championships, as Lindsey Puckett advanced by winning vault and Julie Dwyer advanced in the all-around for the second year in a row. Dwyer tied for fifth on beam at Nationals, earning All- America honors. Auburn finished 2006 with a record that included a victory over LSU in Baton Rouge for the first time since After coming within.4 of eventual national champion Georgia, which was the closest meet between the two schools, and a slim.575 loss to Alabama, which was the closest meet since Auburn last beat the Crimson Tide in 1979, This season, the Tigers have a new theme. Our theme for this year is focus, fight and finish, Thompson said. Last year we were very focused and fought our way through a lot of meets, but we didn t finish the season the way we wanted to. Now, everyday we talk about it. Whether it s on a skill, routine or part that you are doing, you should focus on what you are doing, fight for the landing and finish the routine. We are hoping that by instilling that at the beginning, it is going to pay off for us at the end. Who s Gone The Tigers lose just one gymnast from the 2006 team, Danielle Holtz. Holtz led off both the floor and vault events for Auburn and was very consistent, finishing as high as fourth on floor and fifth on vault. With just two routines to replace, Thompson will be looking to his crop of potential-filled freshmen to take her place. The Newcomers Three new faces will don the orange and blue this season, as freshmen Jessica Froning, Carmen Nelms and Krissy Voss look to put their stamp on the Auburn program. Voss, a native of Paradise Valley, Ariz., has been very steady for the Tigers after arriving with quite an impressive resume. We are looking for Krissy to take Danielle s place not only on vault and floor, but she is going to be able to step in on bars and beam, where Danielle didn t even train, Thompson said. Not only will she give us depth on bars, but she will give us a great beam routine. She is a great worker and comes from a great club in Arizona where she was highly recruited. She is a great kid and will be outstanding for us. Nelms, who is a walk-on from Stone Mountain, Ga., has been turning heads in the gym this fall. Carmen is unbelievable, but she doesn t know it yet, Thompson said. She could could easily be the best vaulter on our team, and we have Lindsey Puckett who was the regional vault champ and Julie Dwyer who just missed vault finals both years by.025. She is super talented and her beam routine is as nice as any of the other kids. She could be a real star at some point. Froning, a walk-on who hails from Charlotte, N.C., comes to Auburn after training with Southeastern Gymnastics. Jessica Froning is a great girl who works really hard and has a great attitude, Thompson said. She isn t as far along as the others, but she is someone who I think can break into our lineup in the near future. The Returners With 12 letterwinners returning this season, Thompson and the rest of the team will look to the three seniors Nicole Barnett, Jackie Smith and Shanna Somero, for leadership in All three of the seniors were walk-ons at one point, Thompson said. They have worked Shanna Somero extremely hard and are all on scholarship now. The Tigers suffered a blow in October when Barnett injured her knee, which will cause her to miss the entire 2007 campaign. Smith returns for her final season after being one of the captains in Jackie is concentrating on bars and beam for us this year, Thompson said. Her bar routine looks great. She hasn t competed that much for us in the past, but as she continues to train and perform well under pressure, she will be in our bar lineup. Somero will look to build upon her solid performance of last sea Auburn Gymnastics 5

son. She was one of four Tigers to compete in each meet on beam, placing as high as a tie for second (against Centenary). Shanna is training all four events this year, Thompson said. We are going to try not to have her do floor or vault due to her previous achilles injury, but she could step in for us if need be. The junior class could feature some of the most talent on the team, and it all begins with two-time All-American Julie Dwyer. Dwyer became just the third gymnast in conference history to be named SEC Freshman of the Year and SEC Gymnast of the Year in consecutive seasons. As good as she was last season, she is way better now then she was at the end of the year, Thompson said. She is going to have a chance to take on all of the top gymnasts in the country, and I think she will do very well. She is an incredible kid and a great leader. Karmen Pinckney returns after competing in both the vault and floor lineup each meet last season, placing as high as second in each. Karmen competed on three events last year (including bars), Thompson said. She is back training balance beam. We expect her to be really good this season. Aimee Goheen is looking to regain her form of 2005 that made her a regional bar champion as a freshman. Her bar routine is incredible now, Thompson Karmen Pinckney said. She has a big release move and a big dismount, which were the two things that weren t there in the past. Kayla Gies made a name for herself after joining the vault lineup early last season, while also competing on beam in each meet. Kayla was incredible on vault last year, Thompson said. She also only fell once beam last year and did a great job for us. We expect her to do the same this year. After being one of the most highly touted recruiting classes in Auburn history, the sophomore fab five are back to take the next step in their journey towards excellence. Lindsey Puckett returns as one of two Tigers to make it to Nationals in 2006 after winning the regional vault championship. She has been incredible on all four events for us, Thompson said. Bars was her weak event last year, and over the summer she got a big release and dismount. Lindsey has been a dream and should go neckand-neck with Julie for the all-around title every meet. A.J. Mills is back competing on all four events after battling shin problems that limited her to beam and bars last season. We are very happy to have A.J. back healthy, Thompson said. She can give us big scores on vault and floor and her bar routine is amazing because she has two big release moves and a huge dismount. She is going to be a big scorer on bars and beam. Alicia Lenkiewicz returns to the lineup after a successful first season as a member of both the bar and beam lineups. Alicia had some Achilles problems when she got here, so we didn t push her as hard for floor and vault, Thompson said. She could be the best bar swinger that we have. Claire Seiffert is back after being a two event walk-on on vault and floor for the Tigers last season. We expect her to be a competitor on both of those events, and be in the lineup and A.J. Mills compete every meet. We are very confident that she can give us exactly what she did last year. Megan Hill entered last season as a walk-on and improved leaps and bounds, giving Thompson a lot of hope for her this season. She had a lot room to grow before she made the lineup and she has done that, he said. She is doing really well on bars and floor, and her vault is coming along. We are hoping that she makes the lineup and that her hard work pays off. Vault Auburn returns all but one member of its vault lineup from last season, led by regional champion Lindsey Puckett. Puckett recorded three first place finishes last season and will be looking to duplicate that effort again this year. Not to be outdone, Julie Dwyer led Auburn with a average on vault last year and will once again team with Puckett to be favorites to win the event each meet. The duo each recorded scores of which tied for the second highest score in school history The Tigers will also look to Kayla Gies, who was in the lineup the last 11 meets, to continue her steady climb to success. Also returning are Karmen Pinckney and Claire Seiffert, both of whom participated in vault every meet in With the addition of A.J. Mills, Carmen Nelms and Krissy Voss, Auburn looks to be in good hands once again to vault their way to top of the rankings. Uneven Bars The Tigers return its entire bar lineup for the 2007 season. Mills led the way with a average in 10 meets, including two first place finishes. Dwyer also registered two top finishes and will once again be a force in the event. 6

Aimee Goheen and Alicia Lenkiewicz will also be counted on heavily to contribute to the lineup, after each took home a first place finish in Puckett will also be back after improving vastly over the summer, according to Thompson. Also looking to crack the lineup will be Shanna Somero and Pinckney, along with Voss. With that much experience and talent, the squad has all the makings of another top bar unit. Balance Beam Auburn will also return its entire beam team, which was ranked as high as fifth in the country last year. Dwyer will lead the way after capturing a fifth place finish at Nationals to earn her second All-American honor. She placed first in 9-of-15 meets last season, averaging a Puckett also recorded a top finish, tying with Dwyer at LSU and will be called upon to help lead. The Tigers will also be helped with the return of Somero and Gies, two steady performers who competed in every meet on beam last season. Lenkiewicz and Mills are also capable of being called upon to put up big scores, and newcomers Voss and Nelms will also be looking to find their way into the lineup. Lindsey Puckett Floor Exercise The Tigers will miss Holtz and Barnett s floor routine in 2007, but don t think for one second that the cupboard is bare. Leading the way for AU once again will be Dwyer. The junior averaged a after recording three first place finishes last year. Pinckney was third on the team last season with a average and will be asked to be a steady performer again this year. Puckett will be another gymnast to watch for, as she looks to continue her rise to the top. Seiffert also returns to the floor lineup after registering a first place finish at Centenary last year. Auburn will receive a big boost from the return of Mills to the lineup, as well as Voss, who has been very impressive this fall. start our season, Thompson said. This is something we have been looking forward to getting on our schedule for years. It has a very strong reputation and we are happy to be going. It helps our recruiting because we can tell them that once during their time here, they will get to go to Cancun. The meet will feature three other quality teams, BYU, Missouri and Iowa State, where former assistant Jay Ronanye is now head coach. The team will then open up its home schedule with back-to-back meets against NC State (Jan. 12) and Kentucky (Jan. 19). From there, a trip to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama on national television awaits the Tigers on Jan. 26. Then it is off to Florida to face the Gators on Feb. 2, and back home to take on LSU on Feb. 16 after a week off. That meet will be AU s second televised meet of the year. Auburn will be back out on the road to face the two-time defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs on Feb. 23. A home meet against Arkansas on March 2 will follow before the Tigers head off to Chicago. The squad will take on Illinois and Illinois-Chicago on March 9 and 11, respectively. The final regular season meet of the year will be the second showdown of Auburn/Alabama on March 16. That night will be Senior Night, as the Tigers will look to honor its three seniors with its first victory over the crimson Tide since The SEC Championship will be held in North Little Rock, Ark. on March 31. For the second straight year, the meet will be held on the podium, and will be the only meet in the country to do so all season. With the nucleus of the team returning, a challenging road schedule and five exciting home meets, there is a lot to be excited about in Auburn in The Schedule The 2007 schedule will start out in bright fashion for the Tigers. We are extremely excited to be heading off to sunny Cancun to 2007 Auburn Gymnastics 7

Guide to Women s Gymnastics General Six gymnasts from each team compete on each of the four events (vault, bars, beam and floor). The team score is calculated by adding the five highest scores on each event. Individual optional routines, put together by the gymnast to express herself through the skills she performs the best, have a starting value of only 9.5. An additional five tenths can be earned, up to four tenths for performing a series of high level skills (combination). One tenth must come from difficulty and one tenth must come from combination. The rest may come from either. Common deductions are landing deductions. One tenth is taken away for each step or large hop that the gymnast takes, while only half a tenth is taken for a small hop. Other deductions include bent arms, legs, toes or leg separation. Falls that occur are deducted five tenths each time. Finally, a gymnast can receive a neutral deduction on balance beam and floor exercise. Neutral deductions are one tenth; and are received for being over time on beam and floor, and for stepping out of bounds on the floor exercise. They occur each time a gymnast violates these rules. Each event, with the exception of vault, has a series of six (bars) and seven (beam and floor) special requirements, and omission of any of these requirements results in a two tenths deduction from the start value. Start Values Start value for college 9.5, extra.5 earned through bonus All judges determine start value It is not mandatory that the start values agree. Evaluation of Optional Exercises Optional Exercise Requirement Formula A. Value Parts 3.00 B. Special Requirements 1.40 C. Combination 0.60 D. Execution 4.60 E. Bonus Points 0.50 Total Value Parts These exercises are composed of elements that possess different difficulty values 1. A-Part (Part w/easy difficulty) 0.20 pt. 2. B-Part (Part w/medium difficulty) 0.40 pt. 3. C-Part (Part w/high difficulty) 0.60 pt. 4. D-Part (Part w/very high difficulty) 0.80 pt. 5. E-Part (Part w/highest difficulty) (only for Bonus Points +20) Value Part Requirements are as follows: pt pt pt. Total 3.00 pt. Bonus Special Connections Achieved through unique and difficult combinations Special connections have a value of.10 or.20. Bonus points for special connections will be awarded only for good technical presentation Additional D/E A maximum of.40 may be awarded as bonus points for additional D/E at Level 10 Additional D elements will receive.10 bonus points Additional E elements will receive.20 bonus points Vault Vault is unlike any other event. There are no specific requirements (SRs). It requires speed, quickness and explosive power. Unlike the other events, each vault has its own start value. Many vaults done in college do not start from a Deductions are taken from the start value for technical errors in the pre-flight (approach), the block (the rise from the horse), the post-flight (height and distance from the horse) and the landing. Each gymnast will perform only one vault. Uneven Bars An uneven bar routine must contain at least two bar changes; these are the first two SRs. A bar change is when the gymnast moves from the high bar to the low bar or vice versa. It must also contain two release moves; these are the third and fourth SRs. A release move is defined as when the gymnast lets go of the bar. Uneven bar routines must contain change of direction. This is the fifth SR; it must be a change of at least 180 degrees or more. The final SR is a dismount. Special Requirements Minimum of two bar changes. Two flight elements, minimum of two different C s OR a D and B. One element with longitudinal axis (LA) turn, minimum of C (not to include dismount). C dismount with the following modification: C dismount immediately pre ceded by same two A or B elements =.10 deduction. Balance Beam The balance beam is 16 feet long, four feet high and merely four inches wide. Performing on the beam requires precise movement and intense concentration. A balance beam routine cannot be more than one minute, 30 seconds. The first special requirement a beam routine must contain is a tumbling series. It must also contain a series of two leaps and/or a series of one tumbling skill and one leap skill. This series is called a gym/acro series. These two series are the second and third SRs. The fourth SR is that the gymnast s torso must touch the beam at some point during the routine. The gymnast must complete a turn of at least 360 degrees on one leg for the fifth SR. The sixth SR is a leap with large amplitude. The requirement may be part of the leap series, the gym/acro series or entirely on its own. Finally, the gymnast must dismount the beam. This is the final SR. Special Requirements Acro series: Minimum of two flight elements, one element must be a minimum of C with or without hand support (both elements must start and finish on the beam). Dance series with a minimum of two elements, one element C or higher. A leap or jump requiring 180 degree split. Minimum of 360 degree turn from Group 3. No hand support permitted. Minimum of C dismount, or B dismount preceded by and directly connect ed to any C element (acro or dance). Floor Exercise Floor exercise is a combination of dance and tumbling to music on a 12 meter by 12 meter space. The duration of a floor routine should be between one minute, 10 seconds and one minute, 30 seconds. A floor routine must contain at least two tumbling passes, first SR, one of which contains two flips, second SR. It must also contain three different flips within the two tumbling passes, third SR. A floor routine must contain a series of three leaps, fourth SR, and a series of two leaps and a tumbling skill or two tumbling skills and a leap, fifth SR. One of the leaps in the routine must be of C value or higher, sixth SR. The final SR is that the routine contains a dismount commensurate with the rest of the routine. Floor exercise has become not only one of the most beautiful of athletic events, but one of the most daring and exciting, as well. Special Requirements One acro series with two saltos, same or different. Three different saltos within the exercise. Dance series with a minimum of two elements (leaps/jumps/hops or turns), one element valued C or higher. Minimum of C salto as the last salto or in the last connection of saltos OR a bonus combination in the last connection of saltos. 8

Jeff Thompson Head Coach Eighth Season Head coach Jeff Thompson enters his eighth season as the head coach of the Auburn gymnastics program. In seven years, Thompson has molded the Tigers into a prominent program in contention of qualifying for the NCAA Championships on a yearly basis. Thompson led AU to the NCAA Regional for its fourth straight year in It is the most consecutive appearances at the Central Regional since the Tigers reeled off eight in-arow from under Robert Dillard. The Tigers finished with a record overall, with 15 of the 16 losses coming against National Championship qualifying teams. Included in those losses was a 0.4 defeat to Georgia, which was the closest meet in series history, and a loss to Alabama, the closest meet between the two schools since At the regional meet, Auburn took home the vault championship, but just missed out on qualifying for Nationals as a team. The Tigers trailed only perennial power, Utah, and host school, Michigan. Last season the squad was consistently ranked in the top 15 in each of the four events, with a rating as high as third on bars and sixth on beam. The Tigers recorded five of the top 10 individual vault scores in Auburn history in As a team, AU posted three of the top 10 vault performances, including a school record point performance at LSU that led to its first victory in Baton Rouge since Julie Dwyer also set a new school record in the all-around when she notched a and swept all four events at Arkansas. Under Thompson s direction, Dwyer was named SEC Gymnast of the Year and also earned her second All-American nod, becoming Thompson s third All-American since joining the program. With four straight regional appearances under his belt, Thompson has the Tigers on the brink of qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the second time under his direction, and just the fourth time in school history. In 2005, Thompson took the Tigers to their third consecutive NCAA Central Regional. The Tigers still had four individuals compete at the NCAA Championships. Highlighting the NCAA Championships was freshman Julie Dwyer, who earned All-America honors on the vault. Dwyer joined Courtney Puckett (2003) as the second All-American under Thompson. Prior to Thompson's arrival as Auburn's fourth all-time coach in 2000, the Tigers had finished a dismal 3-14 and last in the Southeastern Conference. In just three seasons, Thompson was selected as SEC Coach of the Year in 2003, after taking the Tigers to the NCAA THE THOMPSON FILE Personal Year at Auburn: Eighth Hometown: Highland Heights, Ky. 26 2006 In Review The 2006 gymnastics season was one that Tiger fans will look back on fondly. Sophomore Julie Dwyer earned the school s second SEC Gymnast of the Year award, while junior Nicole Barnett was the first Auburn Gymnast to be awarded SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year. In addition, Auburn defeated LSU in Baton Rouge for the first time since Yet for head coach Jeff Thompson, the season didn t end the way he and the rest of the squad had envisioned. We felt like last year we had the team that was going back to Nationals, head coach Jeff Thompson said. We we had a really good team that had been consistent all year, but we got to Regionals and the wheels came off. Still, Auburn got solid individual performances from freshman Lindsey Puckett and Dwyer. Puckett advanced to the Nicole Barnett was named Academic All-American and earned the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year award. NCAA Championships after winning the Northeast Regional vault title with a She became just the second Auburn gymnast to win a regional vault title since Danielle Pritts in Dwyer advanced to the NCAA Championships in the all-around for the second year in a row, as she finished second among all-arounders not on qualifying teams with a At the NCAA Championships, Dwyer became just the third gymnast in school history to earn multiple All-America honors for her career, as she was named second team All-American on beam after tying for fifth. The Tigers began the 2006 campaign ranked 15th in the nation as the squad headed to the Super Six Challenge. In a field which featured six teams ranked in the top 16, Auburn's margin of defeat to Alabama (.575) was the closest it had come to defeating the Crimson Tide since a 1979 victory. Auburn returned to the confines of Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum, where it opened up its home schedule with a convincing win over West Virginia. After climbing to No. 9 in the country, the Tigers opened their 2006 Southeastern Conference schedule with a loss at No. 15 Kentucky where Puckett delivered the second highest vault score in school history (9.925). Auburn then dropped back-to-back meets to Alabama and Florida before heading to the Hearts Invitational, where the Tigers took home first place. Auburn won individual titles in three of four events, including the all-around where Julie Dwyer continued her dominance with her fifth consecutive title. Buoyed by a school-record score on vault and season-high scores on bars, beam and floor, Auburn posted its fourth-highest score in school history as it defeated LSU The Tigers kept the momentum going as they returned home to defeat Centenary. Next up was No. 1 Georgia, who was able to fend off the 13th-ranked Tigers by the closest margin in series history, Despite getting a school-record score of in the all-around by Dwyer, Auburn stumbled in a road meet at Arkansas. A win against Illinois-Chicago on Senior Night finished off the home portion of the schedule and sent lone senior Danielle Holtz off in fashion. Auburn then ended its regular season with a loss at Alabama. The squad headed to the SEC Championships ranked No. 14 where the Tigers took fifth. Following the meet, Dwyer received her award as SEC Gymnast of the Year, while Barnett was given her Scholar Athlete award for her work on and off the mat. Also included was Jackie Smith, who was named to the Good Works Team. Following the season, the team held their annual awards banquet. To begin the evening's festivities, a plaque was presented to Jackie Smith, who was honored for her role as the team captain. Receiving the Most Improved Gymnast award was Karmen Pinckney. The award, which is the longest running of any and dates back to 1977, is usually presented to a walk-on who excelled during the season. Earning Freshman of the Year honors was Lindsey Puckett, who was the only Auburn gymnast to compete in every event at each meet during the season and was the Northeast Regional Vault Champion. The recipient of two awards, Dwyer was presented with "The Rock" award, which recognizes the Most Consistent Gymnast and the Ed Bengston award, which is presented to the Athlete of the Year. The Jasper, Ind., native ended the season with 24 first place finishes. In June, Barnett received additional great news as she was named second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All- America for her 4.00 GPA in biomedical sciences and solid work in the gym. Danielle Holtz wrapped up her career with the Tigers in
