4 In order to reduce crime in South Africa, the youth should be given both hope and real opportunities that create a culture of respect, tolerance and mutual learning. BACKGROUND Youthzones was started in 2009 as a 2010 World Cup Legacy project under the leadership of Mr. Roelf Meyer with the LOC, Minister of Sport and Recreation and the Foundation for a Safe South Africa collaborating to touch the lives of young people by using football and skills development as a vehicle for transformation. The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands provided seed capital and Youthzones quickly grew from five, to eleven, to 30 sites across Southern Africa. Different partners became involved and made it possible to include more areas as youthzones, in an ever expanding network. A youth zone is not a building or even a program, it is a network of relationships in a specific geographic area. Learning takes place under trees, in shacks, next to football pitches or in schools and librarieswhat is important as the foundation for development is friendships, not buildings. Strategy Sport, primarily football and netball is used as social units or families that provides fertile ground for life change Life-skills focus on learning and implementing the personal qualities that make people a success in life Computer Literacy and Internet access develop personal capacity and links people who live apart 3 Organic projects give opportunity for youths to express their own initiatives and creativity in service of the community Physical exchanges and joint training events glues the network together Building friendships across racial and socio-economic boundaries Publications
