We had some encouraging results with most teams competing over at Hornsby. I had an opportunity to watch some of our younger teams and it was exciting to see the enthusiasm and skill level with these young players, keep it up kids and remember to enjoy your experience. We will be at home with all of our teams playing here at the Shark tank on Sunday 18th March. The Hills basketball association will be our opponent in most of the matches. Hopefully we will have another successful day, good luck to all the players and coaches. 2 Page 2 Sharks Bite Over the past year I have alluded to the many people who have volunteered their time for the development of our youth in terms of basketball, and more importantly for their complete development. One area that we lack is the recording of the ways in which people from the past have added positively to Basketball Association. We owe a great deal to the generations of coaches, managers, referees, parents and staff who have built the Association, both metaphorically and literally. From time to time we would like to include in the Sharks Bite profiles of past or present members who have gone above and beyond the average duties or expectations of volunteers, usually without much thanks. To that end we invite our members to put forward submissions on people of the past who deserve to be recognised in this way. One example of a great contributor to the Association was Colin Hodge. My sincerest apologies go to his family for not having included an account of his vast efforts through many areas of basketball in the earlier Sharks Bite since his passing. The respect he had from such a cross section of the basketball fraternity was evident at his recent funeral. In view of Colin s strong desire to foster our youth, a new memorial award will be included in this year s association representative awards. The following meaningful account of Col s contribution to and our youth has been written by Mark Van Smeerdijk, a long time friend of Col. Paul O Neill It is with great sadness I report the death of Colin Hodge a lifelong stalwart and tireless contributor to Basketball. Colin has been fighting a deadly liver disease for the last 20 years and on January 20 th at 4pm he passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends at the age of only 52. Col had been deeply involved with Basketball ever since he was a 12 year old. He played club for the Police Boys Club in the powerful John Churchill days. Col co captained the Kirrawee High School team which made the NSW quarter finals for the first time in the school s history. He won many local championships in both juniors and seniors. He was such a standout that he not only made every representative team but lined up every game, even as a 2 year player. He had a beautiful silky shot and was a magnificent defensive player with a very wicked shot block. He made the u/20 State team and played for many years in a very successful senior men s program. He tasted several Sydney and State championships as a player in both juniors and seniors. Col has been perhaps one of the most successful rep coaches in Basketball history. His teams were always focussed and tough, and always seemed to make the final. He had that rare ability to motivate his teams to play beyond their potential. His teams would go harder in the finals when it matters most. His teams went on to win very many Sydney, State and Australian championships. He developed many State and Australian rep players and was proud always that they would always contact him for a chat when back in Sydney. Col also represented NSW as a state coach.
Issue 4 Page 3 For many years Col pounded the floor and served as a referee. His knowledge was excellent; his judgment was good and was renowned for his fairness. Col also served on the Basketball Board of Directors and contributed as treasurer. He was the head coach of the Gymea Basketball Club and has coached both boys and girl teams. Col worked for many years in the office as the Financial Controller, a very important and difficult job which is often understated. He worked many weekend nights running the bar at home ABA games. He contributed countless hours in the canteen; he would do whatever needed doing way beyond his job description. Col was an exceptional contributor to Basketball, we honor his involvement. He was a committed loyal mate to many and a friend to most. There is no doubt will be greatly missed but never forgotten... Colin Hodge RIP 2012 Colin Hodge - Coach 12 Women
Page 4 Sharks Bite Coaches should be aware that most people teach using their preferred mode of learning with little regard for the needs of the player. Coaches, like teachers, also have a preferred style of instruction-which some time may not be the best for each player or learner. Many coaches end up teaching based on their experience as athletes. For many coaches that means that they were taught by their mentors (past coaches). This style of a coach who may have lectured at his/her athletes for most of the training as if the players were merely there just waiting to be filled up with new One teaching style does not fit all! knowledge. The irony is, however that while we use this style, lecturing does not rank among the most effective strategy for learning and retaining new information. Most new or young players learn more from visual style, seeing it done either on court or through visual aids rather than auditory style of learning. Therefore, the coach needs to encompass and be aware that One learning style may not fit all. Visual-Look, Watch, Show, Demonstrate, Observe, Imagine Auditory-Hear, Sound, Repeat If you can volunteer some of your time to the following committees, please contact Julie by manager@sutherlandbasketball.net.au Volunteers Needed for Sharks Representative Program Parents, friends and relatives of our Representative players are invited to join one of the following committees: Fundraising and Events Committee Home Game Presentation Committee Everyone welcome as many hands make light work Please contact the Association Manager manager@sutherlandbasketball.net.au if interested in helping to make our program GREAT Statistics/Scorebench Team We are in need of new people on our Statistics and Score Bench rosters for Waratah Senior League Home games If you are interested in becoming one of our very important game officials could you please contact the manager manager@sutherlandbasketball.net.au Free Training Provided
Issue 4 Page 5 Team Name: 14 Women 2 Opponent: Hornsby at Hornsby Result: Won The first game of the 2012 rep season and the 14 w 2 started the season with a impressive 26 point win over Hornsby. The team has carried it fantastic pre season form into the comp and with scoring off some fast breaks and good team work we jumped out to a 12 point lead by quarter time. We continued to hold off Hornsby with some good split line and help defence and we only allowed 8 points to be scored against us in the 2nd and 3 rd quarters combined. At the start of the last quarter Hornsby started with 6 unanswered points in the first 90 seconds but after a time out to refocus and make some defensive adjustments we only allowed another 3 points scored against us and with the team scoring another 17 points in the last quarter we end up having a comfortable victory. The whole game was a great team effort by every player as we scored some excellent team baskets because all our player looks for easier scoring opportunities and passing to players in better scoring positions. Well done girls and let s keep the team spirit and team work going and we will achieve great things this season. Peter Fisher Team Name: 14 Men 1 Opponent: Hornsby Result: Won First game of the season and what a great start 11 point win. Both Liam H and Jake K with their never say die attitude and great leadership were what the team needed in the back court. Ethan F was a great back up to the two boys never letting up on the pressure when he hit the court. Jake H and Lazar took on a hard defensive assignment on Hornsby best player and did an excellent job. Both boys took it to the basket hard and are really starting to finish off what they start. Liam E drove hard to the basket and hit some vital shots when we needed them and is really working hard on the boards at both ends of the floor. Kristian was the leading scorer hitting some good shots from outside as well as some strong drives can t wait till he is 100% fit and well. Jed K really put in a great effort coming up with some important offensive rebound and running the floor hard. A fantastic team win with everyone backing and supporting their teammates. Fran Team Name: 12 Women 1 Opponent: Hornsby Spiders Result: Won Great way to start the season, a good win by a great team effort all players playing their part. The game started slowly, but we soon found some rhythm. Competing for the ball was a strong part of the result. Early fouls slowed us down, but smart play and body position changed the momentum. Half time brought a new focus to the game and the girls started to dominate the match. A great game by all the girls, but the Player of the Match goes to Ashley Jones. Grant Phillips Team Name: 14 Men 2 Opponent: Glebe Result: Won Heart Attack Stuff What a start to the season! A very tight, low scoring game with Sharks getting of to a slow start and experiencing our first real away refereeing experience, which they handled quiet well, and ground out a draw at full time! Extra time witnessed more of the same, however with Sharks taking the ascendancy on the score board. Coach Ryan has checked himself in for a heart check up. Well done boys on a gutsy performance. Mike Rafferty
Page 6 Team Name: 18 Men 1 Opponent: Hornsby Result: Sharks defeated Hornsby What a comeback, the boys over ran the Spiders in a last quarter blitz where the fitter team was able to produce the goods to take out the first up win against a good team. Hornsby had controlled the game with a tough inside game along with some good transition basketball. The Sharks kept it close with a scoreline at halftime. The Spiders gained a little momentum in the 3rd quarter pushing their lead out to double figures. With Zac and Jordan playing their best basketball in the final period we were able to over run a tired Hornsby team to finish a nice away win. Geoff lead all scorers with 26, Jack G had a nice game with 10 and also a big, big 4 point play down the stretch. Luke was both good in offence 10 points and also defensively. Shep showed leadership, Jack S was solid with his backup point guard minutes and James led our surge in the end with some big time slashing moves. Overall we got away with a win and we know there is much improvement in this team. Great 4th quarter, lets see if we can rectify our start and middle and we can be very tough to beat this Sunday against Hills. John Suva Team Name: 14 Women Barrengarry Opponent: 1st Game Moss Vale Result: Won Opponent: 2nd Game Shoalhaven Result: Won The team went down to Shoalhaven with seven players as Sumaya and Katelyn were unavailable. First game we won 69 to 12 against the Moss Vale Team. Pipi our point guard had an outstanding game. She showed loads of skill swapping from left to right hand dribble to avoid the defence. While under the ring she drove fearlessly to be the top scorer on twenty three points. Amberly also had a great game taking lots of steals and scoring seventeen points. Under the ring Kaneesha and Katherine were unstoppable, both scoring ten points. Sage the team captain showed skills in both defence and attack, but her real talent was in controlling the game. Natasha s job was to stop the opposition from crossing the half way line. She played so well that Sharks Bite we had to pull the whole team back in the second half. Well done Natasha. While Jacqueline was our best defender and also got in great position throughout the game. Second Game we won against Shoalhaven 36 to 25 We should have won this game by twenty but the game was spoilt by some interesting calls by the referee. Despite this the girls showed maturity beyond their years and focused on the game and what they could control. Pipi again attacked but was met with strong aggressive opposition. To her credit she never gave up although targeted by the opposition. Kaneesha was on fire in this game in both attack and defence scoring eighteen points. Amberly showed her quality and scored eight points. She is one cool calm customer with a beautiful shot. Sage played her role directing traffic and steadying the game when things fell apart. Natasha throughout the game got in good position and was a top support player. Every time the players were in trouble she appeared and saved the play. Katherine played well in this play but interesting foul calls limited her time on court. Jacqueline again showed herself to be a quality defender, stopping at least ten points. She also pulled the ball out to the three point line and as a result opened up the attack. I am fortunate to have very supportive parents and an excellent assistant coach in Tony. Thanks to my amazing Manager Gay, whose attention to detail is great. Sue Turnbull 5/3/12 Team Name: 12 Women 2 Opponent: Hornsby Result: Loss We headed to Hornsby with only seven players, as Natalie was away. Before the warm up Keira was injured. To the girls credit they never stopped trying but against the small running guards they found it tough going. Our girls defence and passing let us down. Tahlia A fought for every ball and was outstanding in both attack and defence. Tahlia E got in good position throughout the game, while Paige shot well. Sarah and Lucy controlled the ball up the court against strong opposition. Kristina played well but fouls limited her time on court. Courteously Keira endeavoured to take the court but was clearly struggling and as a result was unable to play. Thanks to my fabulous managers Dora/George, Kim
Issue 4 my assistant coach and wonderfully supportive, positive parents. The girls are a better team than the score suggests and will improve in the following weeks. Sue Turnbull 11/3/12 Team Name: 18 Women 1 Opponent: Sydney Comets Result: Loss Page 7 Tylah, Lauren and Parrish showed signs of improvement in their boxing out which resulted in them dominating the boards against much taller opposition. Great effort girls, Jo 14 Women 1 V Hornsby Playing against Sydney Comets in the first round was always going to be a challenge and the girls took it head on and gave it their best. Coach Rob Cormack encouraged the girls to stick to their game plan and they fought it out to the end. Cassie was captain for the day and lead the team with courage. The scores were Comets 102 to Sharks 24. Thank you to Kieran Rooney, the physio at Jubilee Sports in Caringbah and Kareela for supplying the 18 womens' teams with new drink bottles. Look out next time Comets! Jo King, Team Manager 18 Women 1 V Comets Team Name: 14 Women 1 Opponent: Hornsby Result: Won against Hornsby Exciting first win by the girls! Captain Keeley led her team by example. Clare and Tayla s pressure defence continually caused problems for the opposition. Good teamwork resulted in easy baskets with Rachel, Ashleigh, Monique and Maddy doing an exceptional job of sprinting the lanes.
