WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY President Karen W. Morse The University Western Washington University is a public, comprehensive university with a national reputation for academic excellence, dedicated to providing the highest quality undergraduate education in the Pacific Northwest. A Western education offers students the opportunity to develop active learning skills to last a lifetime and serves them well in today s pluralistic, changing and highly technical world. While large enough to offer students a range of top quality programs, Western remains small enough to focus its resources on the needs of individual students as they build career skills on the sound foundation of the arts, humanities, sciences and professional studies. The campus Western s main campus on the western slope of Sehome Hill has been called a jewel of a university. It offers a magic blend of art and nature with views of Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands to the west and a panoramic vista of the city of Bellingham. Some campus locations also offer scenic views of Mount Baker and Washington s Cascade Range to the east and the Canadian Cascades to the north. The campus is just minutes by bus from downtown Bellingham as well as the city s historic Fairhaven district, and its proximity to both locations also puts it within easy walking distance. Western s main campus and the adjacent Sehome Hill Nature Reserve encompass 216 acres near the heart of Bellingham. Counting Lakewood Recreation Center and Boathouse, the Shannon Point Marine Center in Anacortes, and the Viqueen Lodge, Western properties occupy 300 acres. Students Over 13,000 students call Western home during each academic year, starting in late September and continuing through June. A third of Western s students reside in on-campus residence halls. Western offers something for every student, with more than 100 cultural, academic, recreational, religious, social and political clubs and organizations as well as multiple venues for the performing arts and extensive opportunities for community service. Academic programs and degrees Western is organized into a graduate school and seven undergraduate colleges: the College of Business and Economics, the College of Fine and Performing Arts, Fairhaven College, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Huxley College of the Environment, the College of Sciences and Technology, and Woodring College of Education.

GENERAL INFORMATION WWU ATHLETICS In its eighth year as a full member of NCAA Division II (Sept., 1998), Western Washington University already has made national appearances in men s and women s basketball, men s cross country, women s rowing, football, men s and women s golf, softball and volleyball. The Vikings won the school s first NCAA II National Championship in women s rowing in 2005 and successfully defended that crown last spring. Western placed second nationally in women s rowing in 2002 and 2003, and reached the national semifinals in men s basketball and women s basketball in 2001 and 2000, respectively. Western won the first four Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Sports Championships ( , , , ), and placed second by just three points last year. In women s basketball, Western ranks among the top 15 in alltime victories among all four-year schools, and has made nine straight national appearances. The Vikings had the fourth-longest winning streak in NCAA II history when they won 57 consecutive league matches in volleyball from During the academic year, Western won league titles in women s basketball and men s indoor track and field. The Vikings captured the NCAA II national title in women s rowing, and placed fifth nationally in women s golf. They also made regional appearances in men s and women s basketball, men s and women s cross country, men s and women s golf and women s rowing. The Vikings athletic history dates back over a century. Intercollegiate competition began in football and basketball in Today, nearly 500 student-athletes compete in 16 varsity sports. The 2005 NCAA Report found that 79 percent of Western studentathletes receive their degrees in six years or fewer. That was 28 percentage points higher than the average for student-athletes in the 9-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference (51 percent), and 25 points higher than the national average for NCAA II schools (54 percent). FACILITIES Athletic facilities on Western s campus include Sam Carver Gymnasium, a softball field, artificial-surfaced Viking Field, a sixlane all-weather rubberized track, and four practice fields. Carver Gym, completed in 1962, has five basketball courts, including a main gym which seats 2,534 spectators. It also has a swimming pool, handball courts, a strength and fitness center, and convertible facilities for volleyball, which includes a SportCourt. Softball contests take place on campus at a facility completed in There is seating for 500. Rowing events are held on Lake Whatcom, with the boathouse located at Lakewood. Cross country competition is conducted at Lake Padden Park. Golf matches are held at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club. WWU QUICK FACTS Location...Bellingham, WA (70,000 pop.) 8 PREVIEW Fresh start for Vikings as just five letter winners, no starters, return Look around the Western men s basketball program. You won t see many familiar faces. Just five letter winners are on the roster and combined, they played just 681 minutes last season for a Viking team that was 23-7 overall, 13-5 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and reached the West Regional final of the NCAA Division II National Tournament. But there s history of Western going through this process before with success. Five of the seniors on the team were freshmen in They went over their four seasons, and made two trips to the West Regional. That group was in its first season. And there s also experience from a head coach who has seen these things play out before. Brad Jackson enters his 22nd season, making him the longest-tenured coach in school history. His career record leaves him just two wins short of 400, and he s Western s career leader in coaching victories and winning percentage (.620). We go from a team that was exceptional and with players in the program a long time to a team that really is almost totally new, said Jackson. We don t have a lot of on-court experience, but we do have five guys who have been here in school, in the program. The transition for them is smaller. For everyone else, it s a big transition, there s a lot they haven t been through yet. The status of the returning player who saw the most minutes last season remains in doubt. Junior 6-5 forward Brett Weisner was Western s top scoring reserve, averaging 4.9 points a game, but is still recovering from a knee injury suffered in the spring. It isn t clear when he ll be back. It s unfortunate for Brett, but he s been highly motivated and his rehab has gone exceptionally well. He d us a bigger guy who can shoot well, and he plays with incredible competitiveness. Weisner s absence makes senior 6-7 post Lukas Henne by far the most experienced returnee. A three-year letter winner, he has played in all but two games over the last three seasons, scoring in double figures 10 times and blocking two or more shots in 21 games. He averaged 3.3 points and 2.0 rebounds in 10.5 minutes a game last season. Lukas has played a lot of different roles in his time here, now he s going to be a guy we look to as a major player, Jackson said. He s improved each year. He blocks shots well, is a good rebounder, and he has a great basketball temperament he rises to the occasion in pressure situations. Sophomore 6-2 guard Ira Graham redshirted last season after averaging 4.6 points and 2.2 assists in the first 11 games of the season. I think what sticks out about Ira is how he s grown and matured personally, said Jackson. He has all the tools to be a fine player. He can score in bunches, he has good range, and he s also unselfish. He s the classic combo guard, he s much bigger and stronger than when he was a freshman and he s just waiting to prove himself. Two 6-7 sophomore post players figure to see expanded roles after seeing limited action last season. Forward Calin Schell, who can also swing out to a perimeter position, played in 13 games last year. Forward David Brittinen saw action in five contests. Calin is a natural leader, Jackson said. He s been in the program two years, he s a rangy strong guy, an instinctive tenacious rebounder who can play the post or play facing the basket. Calin can be a real catalyst for us he lifts up people around him and other players enjoy seeing him do well. Some people have a tendency to sell David Brittinen short because he s a little undersized, but he has excellent timing and he jumps well. David is very mentally tough, and he has good athletic ability. He s worked hard the last couple years. After those five players, the team is entirely new. In the frontcourt, the newcomers are two freshmen 6-10 center Steve Severin and 6-8 forward Gabe Thrash. Severin averaged 12.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 6.8 blocks in earning first-team all-mid Valley League honors as a high school senior. He set school records for blocked shots in a game (11), season (157) and career (265). Thrash, who didn t start playing basketball until his sophomore year of high school, averaged 8.0 points and 12.0 rebounds as a senior. We have two young big guys who are both very eager and very athletic, Jackson said. They bring great size, great enthusiasm, and for their size, they run exceptionally well. There will be times when they take their lumps, but when they do, they have the attitude to get right back up and keep going. There s also a large group of new players on the perimeter. Two of them are transfers junior 6-2 guard Eddie Coulson from Treasure Valley CC in Oregon, and junior 5-11 guard Bryan Adams from De Anza College in California. Coulson averaged 19.0 points a game last season at Treasure Valley, earning second-team all-nwaacc Eastern Division honors. Adams averaged 17.0 points and 4.0 assists at De Anza. The other two key newcomers are freshmen 6-4 guard Brandon Williams and 6-0 Harold McAllister. Williams averaged 13.0 points as a high school senior and played on a national championship AAU squad the previous summer. McAllister was an honorable mention Class 4A all-state pick, averaging 15.5 points and 4.1 assists. Those four bring us a lot of speed and quickness, said Jackson. Bryan and Harold are both natural point guards. Eddie is slashing scorer and Brandon brings nice size, athletic ability and great range. We could be very tough defensively with the range these guys have. 6

Completing the roster are junior 6-2 guard Greg Meier, who played at Whatcom CC last year; junior 6-2 guard Jason Pegues, a transfer from Edmonds CC; and freshman 6-4 forward Jerad Groth. I like the players we ve recruited, said Jackson. I m pleased with the quality of young men we have. They bring a good track record, they ve done well in the past. Potentially, we should have very good balance a nice frontcourt group and perimeter people who can shoot and have quickness. Western s schedule is never easy with the GNAC being a rugged conference in both travel and competition. Three conference schools have reached the national semifinals in the last six years. Top-to-bottom, our conference is one of the top two or three in the country, Jackson said. We re also in one of the toughest regions in the country. We do have a fair number of home games early in the season, which will be good for our team. The Vikings open the season with 11 straight non-conference games, seven of them at home. There s also tournaments in Seattle and Las Vegas where Western will meet West Region opponents, before GNAC play commences in early January. We realize there will probably be some ups and downs, but you hope the young guys mature quickly, said Jackson. You want to get better as the season goes on, but you can t wait long and just say, We ll get ready for the conference. There s some important in-region games early on. GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll Pts Record 1. Central Washington (6) (10-8) Seattle Pacific (2) 26-6 (14-4) Alaska Anchorage (1) (10-8) Seattle (9-9) Western Washington 23-6 (13-5) Saint Martin s 7-20 (2-16) Alaska Fairbanks (10-8) Northwest Nazarene (7-11) Western Oregon 9-18 (4-14) 17 (Note: First-place votes in parenthesis. 10 GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE preview Central Washington Favored To Win GNAC Title Great Northwest Coaches Poll Pts 1. Central Washington (6) (10-8) Seattle Pacific (2) 26-6 (14-4) Alaska Anchorage (1) (10-8) Seattle (9-9) Western Washington 23-6 (13-5) Saint Martin s 7-20 (2-16) Alaska Fairbanks (10-8) Northwest Nazarene (7-11) Western Oregon 9-18 (4-14) 17 (Note: First-place votes in parenthesis. Points awarded on a basis). Central Washington, which hasn t won a conference title since grabbing the 1999 PacWest championship and has never finished higher than fourth in the GNAC, is a solid favorite to win its first Great Northwest Athletic Conference men s basketball title this winter. The Wildcats received six of nine first-place votes in the GNAC Coaches poll in outpointing defending West Regional champion Seattle Pacific for the top spot. The Falcons, who return three starters off of last year s conference championship team including NCAA West Region MVP Rob Will, received two first-place votes in the balloting. Alaska Anchorage received the lone remaining first-place vote and finished third in the poll. CWU coach Greg Sparling, who enters his 12th season at Ellensburg and has a career mark of , has a league-best nine returning lettermen, including two of the conference s three returning all-stars. In addition, Sparling might arguably have the best influx of new talent of any team in the league, including center Bryan Freshwater, who redshirted last season after transferring from Alaska Anchorage, and four junior college all-stars - guards Nate Jackson, Erik Bell and Tyler Monk and forward Bryce Daub. Sparling is excited about his team s depth. We have the depth to where we can do a lot of different things both offensively and defensively, Sparling said. We should be able to do some things with our bench that we haven t had the luxury of doing the past few years. CWU s top returning player is forward Lance Den Boer. Den Boer ranked third in the conference in scoring, averaging 20.6 points per game, and also contributed 6.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists in earning second-team all-conference honors a year ago. The Wildcats also return 6-9 senior forward Grant Assink and sophomore guard Johnny Spevak from last year s starting lineup along with guard Derek Groth, who averaged 14.4 points in earning honorable mention all-league honors two years ago before sitting out the season. Freshwater averaged 7.3 points two seasons ago for the Seawolves and will give the Cats a true post player to match up with other big men in the conference, including SPU s Will. Bolstering the Wildcat guard position, which took the biggest graduation hit with the loss of Chris Bannish (15.7 ppg) and Robert Hicks (13.9 ppg), were Monk, who averaged 19 points a game in earning Western State Conference all-star honors at Bakersfield Junior College; Jackson, a first-team all-conference selection at Highline CC, and Bell, who averaged 18.6 points in earning first team NWAAC East Region all-star honors for Spokane CC. On the inside, the Wildcats also got a boost with the addition of Freshwater and NWAACC North Region MVP Bryce Daub, who averaged 17.4 points and 7.9 rebounds for Bellevue CC. Seattle Pacific, however, also appears to have a talented group and won t give up its crown willingly. In addition to the 6-10, 275 pound Will, who averaged 12 points and 6.4 rebounds, the Falcons also return guard Dustin Bremerman, who averaged 18 points and 5.2 rebounds, and is the lone returning first team all-star in the conference, and Drew Matzen, who started 31 games and averaged seven points per game. SPU coach Jeff Hironaka also added some outstanding talent include Navy transfer Casey Reed and California JC standout JoJay Jackson. Reed played in 27 games at the military academy and averaged 3.1 points and 1.5 rebounds, while Jackson averaged 19.7 points and 7.3 rebounds for Solano Junior College. Several other teams in the conference also have veteran groups and may be capable of vying for conference and regional honors. Western Oregon returns eight letter winners and Saint Martin s has seven back. Both squads also have four returning starters and added quality recruits. Seattle University returns six lettermen and three starters and Alaska Anchorage has five lettermen and two starters. The biggest rebuilding jobs are at Alaska Fairbanks, Northwest Nazarene and Western Washington. All three teams have only three returning letter winners. The Nanooks and Crusaders each return one starter, while the Vikings graduated their entire starting unit off last year s team that lost to SPU in the West Regional title game. Among last year s statistical leaders, only Den Boer and Bremerman, who finished ninth, return among the Top 10 scorers, while Jacob Mitchell of Western Oregon (6th) and Den Boer (10th) are the only two from last year s Top 10 rebounding list. Den Boer also ranked fifth in three-pointers, seventh in threepoint percentage and second in free throw percentage last year in the GNAC. Will, who led the conference in blocked shots, is one of three returning GNAC statistical champions along with Saint Martin s Jake Linton in free throw percentage and Luke Cooper of Alaska Anchorage in assists.

TEAM PREVIEWS Central Washington Wildcats (15-13, 10-8, 4th-T) Though the Wildcats graduated two of their top three scorers (Chris Bannish and Robert Hicks), Sparling will have multiple options at every position beginning with Lance Den Boer. We have 16 guys who could step in and play right away, Sparling said. We are going to miss Chris and Robert, but I think we have added some key transfers and recruits that will fill those voids, Sparling added. Den Boer (6-6, Sr., Sunnyside, WA Sunnyside Christian) could be one of the top players in the country this winter, though it might be tough because of CWU s depth for him to improve on last year s numbers. A year ago, he averaged 20.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists and made 71 of 160 three-pointers while ranking second nationally in free throw percentage (92.8). Lance is so tough to guard because he can score inside or outside, Sparling said. He should also benefit this year because we will have so many more options and teams won t be able to key on him. Also returning from last year s starting lineup is center Grant Assink (6-9, Sr., Lynden, WA Whatcom CC) and guard Johnny Spevak (6-2, So., Edgewood, WA - Puyallup), while Derek Groth (6-3, Jr., Yakima, WA Ike & Air Force) returns from CWU s starting five. Assink averaged 9.1 points and 5.1 rebounds last season Grant had a steady junior season for us, Sparling said. We need for him to take his game to the next level, which he is capable of doing. Spevak, who is the leading receiver on CWU s football team and might miss some early-season games if the Wildcats make the football playoffs, contributed 7.4 points and 3.6 rebounds and was also outstanding on defense as a true freshman while guarding some of the best players in the conference. Groth was CWU s third-leading scorer two years, averaging 14.7 points and 4.4 rebounds. After a year off due to an injury, he is stronger and quicker and could be ready for a great junior season. Four other returning players had significant playing time a year ago including forward Julius McMillion (6-7, Sr., Seattle, WA Cleveland) and guards Colton Monti (6-0, So., Lacey, WA North Thurston), Joey Luke (6-4, So., Kent, WA Kent-Meridian) and Tremaine Curry (6-0, Sr., Port Orchard, WA South Kitsap). McMillion averaged 6.9 points and ranked second to Den Boer in rebounding, pulling down 5.9 per contest. He also ranked second in the conference in blocked shots with 37. Monti netted six points per game last season and shot nearly 50 percent (22 of 45) from the three-point line. He had a good freshman season and we are expecting him to have a great sophomore year, Sparling said. Luke, who has been hampered by injuries during his collegiate career, and Curry, a walk-on who gave CWU good defense and an inspirational left on the bench last season, each contributed 2.8 points per game. Among the transfers and recruits that should make an immediate impact this winter are center Bryan Freshwater, forward Bryce Daub and guards Nate Jackson, Tyler Monk and Erik Bell. Freshwater (6-8, Sr., Vancouver, WA Columbia River) started 14 games for Alaska Anchorage two years ago and averaged 7.3 points and 3.6 rebounds. One thing we were lacking last year was a true post player and Bryan gives us a power game that we can go to as well as the shooting touch from the perimeter, Sparling said. Daub (6-6, Jr., Bellevue, WA Newport) ranked ninth in the NWAACC in scoring (17.4) and also averaged 7.9 rebounds in earning North Region MVP honors for Bellevue. He also blocked 42 shots. Jackson (6-0, Jr., Seattle, WA Cleveland) averaged 13.9 points and 2.1 assists and made 46 of 110 three-pointers in earning first team NWAACC West Region honors. His numbers are especially impressive as he played just 22 minutes per game for a deep and talented championship team at Highline. He is an unbelievable defender on the ball; one of the best I ve coached, Sparling said. He also has the ability to change the face of a game with his quickness, scoring and passing ability. Monk (6-0, Jr., Portland, OR Benson) averaged 19 points a game at Bakersfield two years ago taking 60 percent of his shots and making 44 percent from the three-point line in earning allstar honors. He s a game-changer, Sparling said. He s the type of guy who can come in and fill it up though he is still knocking the rust off after sitting out a year. Bell (6-4, Jr., Selah, WA) averaged 18.6 points in earning first team NWAACC East Region all-star honors at Spokane CC and is the all-time leading scorer at Selah, a school that produced CWU s all-time leading scorer Ryan Pepper. Erik does so many things that don t show up in the stat sheets. He also does the big things scoring, rebounding and finding the open man, Sparling added. Other additions include guard Giovonne Woods (6-3, Jr., Lacey, WA River Ridge) from San Jose City College and Steve Breeze (6-6, So., Coulee Dam, WA Lake Roosevelt), who played in eight games two years ago for the Wildcats. Seattle Pacific Falcons (26-6, 14-4, 1st) Though it graduated three of its top five scorers, including GNAC Player-of-the-Year Tony Binetti, Seattle Pacific appears to have the guns to make another run at its third GNAC title in six years and make a return trip to the NCAA West Regional playoffs. The pieces are there, but they are going to be different, particularly at the point and high post, SPU coach Jeff Hironaka, who has guided his teams to a record over the past three seasons, said. Defensively and in transition, we may be able to take advantage of our athleticism, the GNAC Coach-of-the-Year said. We have two and three people with the physical tools at virtually every spot, but it s a chemistry issue whether that translates to depth.

Back are two of the best players in the league at their positions in forward Dustin Bremerman (6-4, Sr., Yakima, WA Eisenhower) and center Rob Will (6-10, 275, Jr., Seattle, WA O Dea & Bellevue CC). Bremerman, the lone returning first team all-star in the GNAC, ranked ninth in scoring in the conference a year ago, averaging 18.9 points per game and also contributed 5.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists. With a full season left, Bremerman already ranks 10th in GNAC history in three-pointers made (173) and 16th in career scoring (1,268). Dustin will go down as one of the best offensive players we ve ever had here, Hironaka said. He s got to score for us, and if he s consistent that will be great for us. Hironaka, however, will also be looking for more offense from the four and five positions to offset what it lost on the outside with the graduation of Binetti, who produced a team-best 18.2 points per game from his point guard position. If teams focus on Dustin, other guys will have to step up, Hironaka said. Will averaged 12.0 points and 6.4 rebounds last season, but increased those totals to 14.4 and 7.6, including career highs of 29 points and 13 rebounds in a regional win over Central Washington, during the post-season. For us to be successful (this winter), Will has to take a step forward and produce almost a double-double (every night), Hironaka said. And we need people like (JoJay) Jackson, (Casey) Reed, (Brandon) Larrieu and (Marques) Echols to produce. That quartet along with center Filip Popovic and redshirts Rob Diederichs and Adam Wardell are the additions to the six players who return off last year s championship team. Jackson (6-5, Jr., Fairfield, CA Vallejo) put up impressive numbers last season at Solano Junior College averaging 19.7 points and 7.3 rebounds Reed (6-5, So., Canby, OR), meanwhile, played in 27 games at the military academy and averaged 3.1 points and 1.5 rebounds. Larrieu (5-10, Fr., Puyallup, WA) averaged 18.7 points last season at Franklin Pierce High School and had 14 points in the State 3A victory over the 4A team in the post-season all-star game. Echols (6-2, Jr., Seattle, WA Garfield) joins the Falcons after an outstanding JC career at Peninsula. Popovic (6-7, Jr., Montenegro, Serbia) averaged 8.8 points and 4.8 rebounds in an injury shortened sophomore season at California s Skyline College after earning honorable mention honors as a freshman. The newcomers join a cast of returning players including Bremerman, Will, starting forward Drew Matzen (6-4, Sr., Bothell, WA Lynnwood) and reserves Jared Moultrie (6-2, Sr., West Point, UT), Brian Lynch (6-1, Sr., Missoula, MT) and Austin Yuen (5-8, Sr., Mercer Island, WA). Matzen averaged seven points and 3.4 rebounds last season, shooting 51.2 percent from the floor, including 32 of 78 from the arc, while Moultrie averaged 4.6 points and was the team s second leading assist producer (2.8). Lynch chipped in with 2.9 points per game. Yuen played in just 12 games and 22 minutes. Alaska Anchorage Seawolves (19-12; 10-8, 4th-T) When Alaska Anchorage takes the court for its season opener, it will be a work in progress. That s to be expected when almost three-quarters of your roster is new. Gone from last season s NCAA tournament squad are seven letter winners, including four starters, who accounted for 63 percent of the Seawolves scoring. In response, third-year head coach Rusty Osborne (30-28, 2 years) and his staff has gathered one of the largest recruiting classes in school history, putting 12 new players in Green & Gold. What really stands out to me is our flexibility, said Osborne. This is a very versatile group of players, most of whom can play multiple positions. The key for us this season will be to see how long it takes all of our new guys to come together and gel as a team. Luckily the Seawolves have a few reliable veterans to aid the transition, beginning with the talented backcourt duo of point guard Luke Cooper (6-0, Jr., Eltham, Australia) and shooting guard Eric Draper (6-2, Sr., Memphis, TN). Cooper has been the definition of a floor general in his first two seasons at UAA, leading the GNAC in assists (career 5.9 average) both years. The junior from Australia had 199 assists in and ranked ninth in the nation with 6.4 average. Add an ever-improving jump shot and defensive maturity, and Cooper might be one of the top point guards in the country. Draper, meanwhile, has one of the deadliest jumpers in Division II, finishing as the team s fifth-leading scorer (8.6 ppg) despite playing just 13.6 minutes per game in Among GNAC reserves, he led the league with 0.63 points per minute, shooting 41.7 percent on three-pointers and 84.6 percent from the free throw line. With as many new faces as we have, it s key to have Luke back with his ability to run our offense, said Osborne. Eric did good things with the minutes he had last year, and he s done and excellent job of working to improve the weaknesses in his game in the off-season. Among the backcourt newcomers, Buddy Bailey (6-3, Sr., Wasilla, AK Cal Baptist) should add extra maturity and ballhandling ability to the team. An Anchorage native who played his first three seasons at NAIA Cal Baptist, Bailey will be counted on at shooting guard, plus as a back-up to Cooper at the point. Bailey averaged 7.8 points per game at CBU last year, shooting 40 percent on threes and 87 percent at the line. Osborne can also look to Larry Pikes (6-1, Jr., Richton Park, IL Rich South) to play multiple roles, noting the junior s ability to penetrate and create his own shots. The Chicago native was an all-region junior college pick at Black Hawk East (Ill.) JC in , averaging 19 points and five assists. UAA s most familiar new faces are a pair of local freshmen Trenton Millar and Lonnie Ridgeway who were teammates on Heritage Christian s back-to-back 3A state title teams. 10

The 6-3 Ridgeway was 3A Player of the Year in , averaging 17.5 points and 6.4 rebounds, while the 6-5 Millar was a two-time all-state selection and led Heritage in scoring during last year s state tourney run. While Ridgeway and Millar both possess the size to play the small forward position, neither should feel excessive pressure because of the presence of fellow newcomer Allen McFarland. A multi-talented swingman from Las Vegas by way of Western Illinois and Salt Lake Community College, the 6-5 McFarland bridges the gap between UAA s back- and frontcourts. Allen is a big, strong player who s a jack of all trades, Osborne said about the former Division I player who played in 13 games two years ago at the four-year school. He s very good at a lot of things and will put up numbers across the stat sheet. He s our glue guy. Ready to step into a leadership role this year is junior Carl Arts. The 6-6 forward from Valdez ranked third on the team in rebounding (4.6) and shot 53 percent from the field last year, including a team-best 16 of 28 (.571) from three-point range. Osborne says Arts has reported back to school in the best physical shape of any Seawolf, putting him in position to maximize his tremendous skill set. Joe Davis (6-7, Jr., Columbus, Ohio Worthington Cochise) was second on the team in scoring last season behind All-American Kemmy Burgess, averaging 11.0 points on 61 percent ( ) shooting. The 6-7, 280-pounder is currently ineligible, but he could rejoin the lineup in late December. Helping offset the early-season loss of Davis is junior transfer McCade Olsen. The 6-8, 215-pounder from Riverton, Utah, was a two-time All-Region IX pick at Eastern Wyoming College, leading the region in scoring last season at 21.7 points per game. Osborne calls Olsen a complete offensive player who can shoot the three, handle it on the perimeter, and post-up equally well. Ivan Platenik (6-7, So., Melbourne, Australia), an unorthodox scorer who is crafty around the basket, joins the frontcourt to give UAA yet another dangerous offensive option. The 6-7, 190-pounder led the Australian Big V league with 29.1 points per game two seasons ago, and last year averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds. JC transfers Steve Mitchell (6-4, Jr., Estes Park, CO) and Cameron Burney (6-6, So., Steamboat Springs, CO) from Otero (Colo.) provide added versatility and depth in the frontcourt. While Osborne describes the 6-3 Mitchell as a prototypical blue-collar forward, the 6-6 Burney is more of an athletic forward who could transition to a perimeter role as well. Clayton Spencer (Pagosa Springs, CO), a 6-8, 205-pound transfer from JC power Western Nebraska, adds quality size, strength, shot-blocking and passing ability in the low post. Also joining the fray down low is 24-year-old freshman Da- Ron Mason (6-5, Detroit, MI), who comes to UAA after six years in the Air Force, and two-year letter winner Jared Kettler (6-6, Jr., Dana Point, CA St. Margaret s), who has seen action in 10 career games. Seattle University Redhawks (16-11, 9-9, 7th) Seattle University returns six players, including three starters, off a team that won 16 games, including their first win over a Division I program in 26 years (University of Portland). The Redhawks, who got off to a 5-0 start, were in the hunt for a post-season berth up to the final day of the regular-season. Last season the early success was exciting, it motivated the team, and it created a lot of enthusiasm, SU head coach Joe Callero (58-79, 5 years; Overall, , 7 years) said. We need to minimize the highs and lows most teams experience during a typical season and avoid any serious losing streaks. We are on the precipice of the national tournament and I think we are ready to take that next step. Seattle will have the benefit of one of the most experienced starting backcourts in the conference, as Ryan Webb (6-1, Sr., Mountlake Terrace, WA) and Sam Kirby (6-0, Sr., Sacramento, CA) return for their senior seasons. Last season Webb averaged five assists per game in running the offense, while Kirby is the team s leading returning scorer, averaging 10.4 points per game. Between the point guard play of Sam and the defense and intensity of Ryan, the seniors have been providing great leadership and direction since the start of practice, Callero said. The team suffered a blow when Shaun Burl (6-1, Jr., Berkeley, CA), who averaged 2.3 points in a reserve role, went down with a severe knee injury that required surgery over the summer. With Burl s injury, the backup guard positions will be filled by freshmen Ricky Berry (6-3, Phoenix, AZ), Noah Blakney (6-3, Mercer Island, WA), Chris Gweth (6-1, Beaverton, OR - Hillsboro), and Taylor Olson (5-10, Seattle, WA Blanchet). Blakney is recovering from an ankle injury and will push his teammates in practice, while the newcomers look to make an immediate impact on the program. Noah understands my offense and is a good defender, while Taylor is being groomed as the backup point guard this season, Callero said. Chris has an outstanding upside, showing confidence and poise right from the start of practice, and Ricky is one of the best all-around players I have ever recruited to Seattle. At forward, Leigh Swanson (6-8, So., Mountlake Terrace, WA) appeared in every game for the Redhawks last season, starting eight contests in the second half of the season. With his array of post moves and rebounding skills, Swanson is expected to improve his averages of 6.9 points and 4.0 rebounds. Ryan Coldren (6-8, Jr., Fall Creek, OR - Marist) is also expected to see more playing time this season after appearing in 19 games last year. Even though he is only a freshman, Mike Boxley (6-5, Mountlake Terrace, WA) possesses an upperclassman s body, which will help him make an immediate impact in the Seattle lineup. The coaching staff likes his physical play, his defensive ability, and his rebounding skills. Fellow freshmen John Vincent (6-4, Billings, Mont.) and J.J. Mulligan (6-7, Reno, Nev.) will be fighting for playing time. John is a tough defensive player and good three-point shooter, but needs time to learn my system, Callero said. J.J. 11

is another freshman with a consistent perimeter game, but he needs to get stronger and more intense on defense to receive more playing time. During his time with the Redhawks, David White (6-11, Sr., Seattle, WA Bellevue CC) has worked hard to improve his post play and develop a power game. A 72 percent free throw shooter last season, the coaching staff is expecting him to make more trips to the charity stripe, and White will also be expected to show off his improved skills in rebounding and shot blocking. A year ago he averaged 6.9 points and 3.8 rebounds and blocked 25 shots. After redshirting last season, Travis Welt (6-9, Jr., Spokane, WA St. George s) is hoping to serve as a solid backup to White this year. The coaches like his work ethic and his improved strength and conditioning. He will be depended on to clog up the paint and work the offensive boards for the Redhawks in the upcoming season. Western Washington Vikings (23-7, 13-5, 2nd) Look at the Western Washington roster, you won t see many familiar faces. Just five letter winners return and combined, they played just 681 minutes last season for a Viking team that was 23-7 overall, 13-5 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and reached the West Regional final of the NCAA Division II national tournament. Forward Brett Weisner (6-5, Jr., Spokane, WA - Shadle Park) was Western s top scoring reserve, averaging 4.9 points a game, but is still recovering from a knee injury suffered in the spring. It isn t clear when he ll be back. It s unfortunate for Brett, but he s been highly motivated and his rehab has gone exceptionally well. He d us a bigger guy who can shoot well, and he plays with incredible competitiveness. Weisner s absence makes Lukas Henne (6-7, Sr., Bremerton, WA - Central Kitsap) by far the most experienced returnee. A three-year letter winner, Henne has played in all but two games over the last three seasons, scoring in double figures 10 times and blocking two or more shots in 21 games. Guard Ira Graham (6-2, So., Fontana, CA) redshirted last season after averaging 4.6 points and 2.2 assists in the first 11 games of the season. Forward Calin Schell (Chelan, WA), who can also swing out to a perimeter position, played in 13 games last year. Forward David Brittinen (Hoquiam, WA) saw action in five contests. In the frontcourt, the newcomers are two freshmen 6-10 center Steve Severin (Richland, WA - Hanford) and 6-8 forward GabeThrash (Gardena, CA). Two of them are transfers guard Eddie Coulson (6-2, Jr., North Las Vegas, NV - Cheyenne) from Treasure Valley CC in Oregon, and guard Bryan Adams (5-11, Jr., San Jose, CA - Branham) from De Anza College in California. 12

Coulson averaged 19.0 points a game last season at Treasure Valley, earning second-team all-nwaacc Eastern Division honors. Adams averaged 17.0 points and 4.0 assists at De Anza. The other two key newcomers are freshmen 6-4 guard Brandon Williams (Chicago, IL - Thornton Fractional North) and 6-0 Harold McAllister (Vancouver, WA - Mountain View). Completing the roster are guards Greg Meier (6-2, Jr., Chelan, WA), who played at Whatcom CC last year, and Jason Pegues (6-2, Jr., Seattle, WA - Cleveland), a transfer from Edmonds CC and forward Jerad Groth (6-4, Fr., Yakima, WA - Eisenhower. Groth s brother Derek plays for Central Washington. I like the players we ve recruited, said Jackson. I m pleased with the quality of young men we have. They bring a good track record, they ve done well in the past. Potentially, we should have very good balance a nice frontcourt group and perimeter people who can shoot and have quickness. Saint Martin s Saints (7-20; 2-16, 10th) Among its top eight players from a year ago, Niko Nunogawa was the lone graduation loss for Saint Martin s. While obviously the second-team GNAC all-star was a big loss he led the Saints in scoring (16.3) and rebounding (7.0) - for the first time in his tenure SMU coach Keith Cooper (23-58, 3 years) has a team with good depth and a lot of experience. One of our assets is our depth and experience, which is something we just haven t had before, Cooper said. We ve also added some size. In the past we had Trevor (Dunstan) at 6-9 and no one else bigger than 6-6. With seven letter winners, including six players who started 13 or more games a year ago, being joined by several solid newcomers, including Grays Harbor CC transfer Bill Richardson, the Saints conceivable could move up a couple of rungs in the conference standings. Richardson (6-8, Jr., Shelton, WA) should be one of the top new players this winter in the conference. Last year he averaged 20 points per game and 6 ½ rebounds for Grays Harbor. He s a good athlete who can jump out of the gym, Cooper said. He will be a good scorer and rebounder for us and his athleticism will help out at the defensive end. In addition to Richardson also providing size on the front court along side Dunstan, who averaged 5.0 points and 3.2 rebounds last season, will be freshman Michael McIver (6-10, Olympia, WA Capital) and Whatcom CC transfer Matt Hargrave (6-8, Jr., Olympia, WA). McIver, who is also an outstanding baseball player earning league MVP honors in the spring sport, was a first team Narrows League all-star at Capital, while Hargrave averaged 10.7 points and 5.4 rebounds at Whatcom. Matt is a guy who knows our players and our system, Cooper said. He will fit in well. Another addition to last year s group is guard Justin Alexander (6-2, So., Morrison, CO Bear Creek), who played in two games at Kansas State. Other returning veterans for Cooper in addition to Dunstan are forwards Brendan Campbell (6-5, Jr., Bremerton, WA Olympic), Stephon Harris (6-5, Sr., Sacramento, CA) and Tyler Nixon (6-5, So., Sumner, WA White River) and guards Jake Linton (5-10, So., Edmonds, WA Meadowdale), Greg O Neal (6-1, Sr., Portland, OR Douglas & Chemeketa CC) and Joe Chirhart (6-1, Sr., Anchorage, AK Dimond). Campbell averaged 12.6 points and 5.4 rebounds last season and made 49.2 percent of his shots ( ), while Harris contributed 11.9 points and 4.7 rebounds and led the team in field goal percentage (min. 100 attempts) making 53.7 percent. He also was the team leader in blocks with 15 and ranked second in steals with 30. Brendan can score inside and also is effective on the outside as well (making 10 of 23 three-pointers a year ago), Cooper said. Stephon has the ability to score and also is a very good defender. Nixon will provide excellent depth on the wings. Last year he averaged 5.3 points, making 49 of 86 shots (57 percent). Linton was one of the top freshmen in the conference last season, averaging 11 points and 3.4 assists and leading the conference in free throw percentage at Jake is a great competitor and is a great shooter, Cooper said. O Neal averaged 6.9 points per game and was one of SMU s top defenders in his junior season. However, an ankle injury did limit his offensive production most of the season. We re expecting more offensive production from him this winter now that he is fully recovered, Cooper said. He is healthy and we re expecting a solid year from him both offensively and defensively. Chirhart is also back for his senior season after averaging 4.5 points and contributing 67 assists in 27 games, 23 as a starter last season. Joe brings toughness and experience and like Jake (Linton), knows how to run a team, Cooper said. We have seven guys who have been starters or who have played quality minutes, Cooper said. I really like that our returnees have some game experience. We finally have some guys who have two and three years of experience which makes a world of difference on the floor in games and in practice, Cooper said. This is a hard working group of guys who are going to get the most out of what they have. 13

Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks (17-10; 10-8, 4th-T) Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks has qualified for the NCAA tournament in three of the past four seasons, twice sharing the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title. Nanooks head coach Frank Ostanik, however, will face a rebuilding effort this winter as UAF returns only one starter and just two players who played more than 15 minutes a game. While this is a season of transition, I also feel we have a great opportunity to continue the unprecedented success we have enjoyed over the last four years, Ostanik said. In the backcourt, the Nanooks only starter back from last season, Kenny Barker (6-3, Jr., San Diego, CA Clairemont), will be the main topic of opposition scouting reports. The pound guard solidified himself as one of the GNAC s best wings by averaging 12.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists last season. Barker finished the season on a tear averaging 17.1 points over the final 10 games. Now Ostanik needs to get that kind of production out of the San Diego native for a whole season. He s a tremendous worker on the court and in the weight room and has shown improvement every year, Ostanik said. For us to be successful this year, Kenny will have to take on an even bigger role. I don t believe anybody we play has a player who plays harder or is tougher. Joining Barker in the back court will be Barry Barnes (5-9, Jr., Long Beach, CA Moorpark). Barnes, a junior college transfer from Long Beach City College, will be asked to be the top point guard for the Nanooks this year. The diminutive 5-9, 160-pound point guard should play big minutes for Alaska. Ostanik expects Barnes to take a leadership role on a young team and add a defensive presence to the top of the Nanook press that will allow the team to pressure in its accustomed style. Barry will be the primary playmaker for us this season, Ostanik said. He s lightning quick with a great combination of skill and feel for the game. We have great confidence in his ability and leadership on and off the floor. Besides Barker, guard Mike Titus (6-2, Jr., Fairbanks, AK Lathrop) is the only other returner with significant experience. Titus was the first wing off the bench last season and averaged 5.3 points and 1.7 rebounds. Titus, dubbed by Ostanik as the team s best returning defender, will be expected to contribute more this year and should compete for a starting spot after recovering from shoulder surgery in May. Another newcomer in the backcourt will be 6-3, 185-pound two-guard Jordan Hayter. Hayter, who prepped at Hidden Valley (Ore.) High School, will also be asked to have an immediate impact. Ostanik says the 2006 Oregon AAA Player of the Year brings a toughness, skill level, and IQ on the basketball floor that surpasses the average freshman. Two redshirt freshmen, Tyrome Flowers (6-5, Tacoma, WA Foss) and Evan Skinner (6-3, North Pole, AK Eielson), will also see their first playing time as Nanooks this season. Flowers should compete for time immediately and add depth on the wing. Ostanik hopes his versatility and skill will make him a solid contributor to this year. Skinner is a 6-4 guard with the ability to play forward, too. A tough competitor who knows how to play and has a knack for making plays, Skinner will also be asked to have an impact as well. Evan is a very smart, tricky player with a great feel for the game and knack for making plays that will win games, Ostanik said. In the front court, a Division I transfer from Texas State, Jushay Rockett (6-5, Sr., Long Beach, CA Arizona Western CC) will be expected to help alleviate the loss of size and scoring from last year in his one season as a Nanook. A multitalented player with an incredible combination of athleticism and strength, the 6-5, 239-pounder can play almost any position on the floor. Simply put, Rockett, who averaged 8.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists for Texas State, should be a match up nightmare for opposing teams. He s one of the most talented players I have ever had the pleasure to coach. Not only is he going to be a great scorer but he is an incredible defender and rebounder, Ostanik said. Jushay will have to be a beast for us to be as good as we hope to. Looking to finally step on the floor and contribute will be redshirt sophomore Colin Matteson (6-8, So., Lynnwood, WA Edmonds CC), At 6-8, Matteson is the tallest Nanook and the junior college transfer worked hard to develop himself physically last year. He should compete for a starting position right away. Colin has good size and skill. He s a very good shooter with good range, which makes him a tough cover for opposing big men, Ostanik said. He needs to continue to get stronger, be a more physical player and a better rebounder. Forward Bryan Hamey (6-4, Jr., Juneau, AK Juneau-Douglas), brings great shooting ability and range to the team. Hamey, who has two brothers that played college basketball, should compete for minutes at forward. Two other freshmen will be asked to contribute immediately in the frontcourt. Martez Christian, a 6-5, 205-pounder, hails from Desert Pines High School in Las Vegas and has good basketball instincts, according to Ostanik. Kevin Atkins, like Barnes and Rockett a native of Long Beach, California, is 6-6, 200 pounds and is a quick learner. While a bit undersized for the frontcourt, both Christian and Atkins have great athleticism and instincts for the game. Northwest Nazarene Crusaders (12-15, 7-11, 8th) Northwest Nazarene head coach Tim Hills (12-15, 1 year; Overall, , 27 years) returns just three players from his team, but that doesn t bother him in the least. I know I like our kids, commented Hills when asked what his pre-season sessions have shown him so far. Other than our point guard, we don t have a lot of experience at this level of play, but having Marcus (Clift) back is huge and I think he has a good feel for what I want him to do. Feel is something that Clift (6-1, Sr., Spokane, WA Montana State) has proven he has, having led the GNAC in assist-to-turnover 14

ratio (3.60) last season. Clift started 26 of the Crusaders 27 games at the point and averaged 10.2 points and 6.3 assists per night. He s going to have to take a little bit more of a leadership role than he did last year, in terms of being more vocal, but I have no doubt he will be a great leader for us, Hills said. Joining Clift in the trio of returnees is 6-1 shooting guard Tim Ireland and 6-4 forward Zach Beech. Ireland, a senior from Bellingham, averaged 10.1 points per game last season and is a legitimate outside threat, having made 51-of-135 three-pointers. Tim is one of the best shooters around, so he ll put some points on the board in a hurry, Hills added. Beech, a redshirt junior from Nampa saw limited action, averaging 1.2 points and 1.9 rebound in 11 games. With only three returnees, the Crusaders fate will be determined by how quickly four freshmen and four transfers jell and learn to play at the GNAC level. We re going to count on playing three freshmen a lot of minutes, and then trying to mix all the new people in our identity might take awhile to develop, Hills said. Those three standout freshman are 6-2 guard Louie Beech, 6-4 guard Justin Parnell, and 6-7 forward Kendall Gielow. Beech, from Skyview High School in Nampa, is a two-time Idaho 4A State Player-of-the-Year, while Parnell is the two-time Oregon 3A Far West League MVP, having played his prep hoops at Sutherlin High School in Oregon. Louie is a pure shooter and very athletic and Justin is an excellent shooter, passer, and is already one of our best defenders, Hills added. Gielow, who played at South Medford High School in Oregon and was the Oregon 4A co-mvp of the state championship game last spring, will help the Crusaders in the paint on both ends of the floor. Kendall is like all of our freshman in that they are all winners and come from winning programs. He s got a great feel for the game and is going to help us right away. Scott Helpenstell, a 6-6 post from Peninsula Community College, will lead the quartet of transfers to the Nampa campus, having averaged 16 points and 8.5 rebounds on his way to being named to the NWAACC Northern Division first-team last season. Scott is a power guy and hits the boards really hard. He s rugged and tough a bigger version of Wade Joseph. With Helpenstell providing the muscle, 6-8 forward Jason Simmons (Jr., Oakland, OR) will be counted on for some offense, having averaged 19.3 points and 7.6 boards per game at Olympic Community College last year. Jason is used to scoring a lot, and shoots it nice. He s capable of scoring and he s going to work hard on getting more physical, Hills commented. With the duo of Helpenstell and Simmons under the glass, Hills found two swingmen to help push the Crusaders in transition in 6-4 senior transfer Casey Fisher and 6-6 sophomore guard Dato Sakvarelidze. Fisher played two seasons at Regis University in Denver averaging 9.6 and 8.8 points, respectively, before knee injuries kept him out of his junior and senior seasons, but comes to NNU to begin a Master s Degree in Business Administration and provide some veteran toughness to the NNU line-up. Casey has a textbook jumper and a great work ethic. He s got no excuses and he s going to get it done, I just love guys like him, Hills said. Sakvarelidze, from Tbilisi, Georgia, played one year at Globe Institute of Technology in New York and brings a slasher-type offensive threat to the NNU attack. Dato has a big upside, is very athletic, and will be good for us in transition for us. Rounding out the Crusader roster is redshirt guard Zac Kibby (5-10, Gaithersburg, MD) and freshman point guard Andrew Swartz (5-10, Nampa, ID). With identity questions to answer and a cup that s always half-full, coach Hills is looking forward to getting the season underway. I really like our group of kids and I m excited to watch them develop over the course of the season. Western Oregon Wolves (9-18, 4-14, 9th) Second-year head coach Craig Stanger will need to replace all-star guard Kevin Tyner, but returns eight lettermen more than anyone else in the conference except for Central Washington and appears to also have added some talented newcomers. Tyner was WOU s top scorer last season averaging 18.3 points per game and finished his career as the GNAC s all-time leader in assists with 600. He also ended up 11th on the GNAC career scoring list (1,418) and 10th in career steals (142). The Wolves return the rest of their starting lineup in tact. In addition Dominique DeWeese, who started 18 games two years ago but played in just five contests last season because of an injury, is also back. Stanger is confident his team will improve on last year s record. We have a lot of good players returning and with a good recruiting class, we should have better depth and more versatile scoring. Returning starters for the Wolves include forward Stanley Ratcliff (6-3, Jr., Palmer, AK) and Travis Kuhns (6-8, So., Salem, OR Sprague), center Jacob Mitchell (6-7, Sr., Olympia, WA Capital & Pierce CC) and guard Larry Hall (6-2, Sr., Long Beach, CA Jordan). Ratcliff and Kuhns, who was selected the GNAC Freshmanof-the-Year, each averaged 11.5 points per game. Ratcliff was among the top field goal percentage shooters in the conference, finishing 11th with a 57.2 percentage and also averaged 6.0 rebounds per contest. Kuhns provides the Wolves both an inside and outside threat. From the outside he made 56 of 157 three-point shots, while also ranking third on the team in rebounding (4.7). Mitchell was WOU s top rebounder, ranking sixth in the conference with a 7.2 average. He also ranked ninth in the conference and led the Wolves with a 59.3 shooting percentage. Hall also provides WOU with an outscoring threat. More than half of his 188 points (7.0 per game) came from the three-point line where he made 34 of 95. DeWeese (6-3, Sr., Portland, OR Lincoln & YVC) averaged 3.6 points in five games after contributing similar numbers (3.1) as a starter in Also back are two reserves guards Rob Malone (5-9, Jr., Port- 15

land, OR Roosevelt) and Brad Krichevsky (5-9, Jr., Beaverton, OR Pacific) who averaged 2.4 and 2.1 points, respectively. Among the new players center Adonal Arrington and forwards Brad Hodge, Mike McLaughlin and Ryan Schmidt are expected to make immediate impacts and provide scoring, depth and a defensive presence that was lacking last season, according to Stanger. Arrington (6-11, Jr., Clackamas, OR Mt. Hood) redshirted at Weber State after playing two seasons at Mt. Hood. Adonal gives us an immediate presence inside, Stanger said. He is a hard worker who wants to get better. Hodge (6-8, Fr., Hillsboro, OR) redshirted last season at Salt Lake Community College after a standout career at Hillsboro, where he averaged 16.4 points in his senior season. Hodge was a two-time All-Metro league selection and played in the Oregon High School all-star series. Brad is a very good offensive player with a scoring mindset, Stanger said. He is a great get for us; we feel like he is a Division I-type player. McLaughlin (6-6, Fr., Lake Oswego, OR) played on the Oregon 4A state champion Lake Oswego squad and was a third-team Three Rivers all-league selection. Schmidt (6-7, 210, Sr., Keizer, OR) is a potential all-star. He played at Linn-Benton and averaged 18.2 points and 5.6 rebounds in earning first team all-conference honors in the season before spending a year at the University of Hawaii. Other additions this winter include guards J.C. Cook (6-1, Fr., Canby, OR) and Alex Swerzbin (6-0, Sr., Portland, OR Clackamas) and forwards Keith Hoffman (6-4, Jr., Corvallis, OR Crescent Valley) and Matt Schmidt (6-5, So., Keizer, OR McNary). Cook averaged 16.4 points in earning second-team all-state honors at Canby, while Swerzbin is making his fourth stop, including previous stints at Central Washington and Hawaii Pacific. Hoffman is a transfer from Allan Hancock Junior College. 25 REVIEW VIKINGS REACH REGIONAL FINAL, SET NUMEROUS SCHOOL RECORDS It was an amazing season in so many ways for the Western men s basketball team. There were records, great individual performances, high national rankings, and a spot in the West Regional championship game of the NCAA Division II National Tournament. And the Vikings were agonizingly close to going even further. Western posted a 23-7 overall record, its second-highest victory total in the last 12 seasons, and placed second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with a 13-5 mark. Even in their seven losses, they were close. Five of the defeats, including the regional final, were by four points or less, and Western had a possession in the final 30 seconds with a chance to tie or take the lead in four of them. An early-season 15-game winning streak was the secondlongest in school history and the longest in 34 years. When the season ends, you wish you could go further, said Western coach Brad Jackson. But we reached the round of 16, and we were in a close game, where with a basket here or there, we could have gone to the Elite Eight. You can t complain too much. Our team played at a high level most of the time and did an awesome job of representing themselves and the university. The Vikings achieved their success behind a high-powered offense that tied a school standard and set a GNAC record by averaging 92.2 points a game, ranking fourth in NCAA Division II, and setting school records in all three shooting percentage categories hitting 51.9 percent of their field-goal attempts, including 42.5 percent on 3-pointers, and 78.6 percent of their free throws. The free throw mark led NCAA Division II nationally, the first time Western has ever led an NCAA statistical category, and the other two marks both ranked third. In all, the Vikings set 21 team or individual school records. The win-loss record is one measure of what we accomplished, but beyond that, this was a team that enjoyed playing together and captivated our crowd, said Jackson. They created an atmosphere of excitement that was really fun and achieved a lot of neat milestones along the way. Jackson had an experienced squad with five senior starters, and three more seniors on the roster. Leading the way were two players who earned All-America honors forward Grant Dykstra and guard Ryan Diggs - and became the first duo in school history to each average better than 20 points a game in a season. Dykstra was the V Foundation Comeback Player of the Year winner for overcoming a childhood farm-machinery accident that required 16 surgeries and left his right arm nearly five inches shorter than the left, was a named a first-team All-American by the NABC and Daktronics. He was a second-team selection by Basketball Times, and a third-team pick by Division II Bulletin. Diggs was a Division II Bulletin honorable mention All-American, and was also co-mvp of the inaugural NABC NCAA II All-Star Game. Dykstra, who also was Daktronics West Region Player of the Year and was a repeater on both the all-west Region team and the all-gnac first-team, averaged 20.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and a team-high 2.0 steals, and was Western s top 3-point shooter, hitting 43.7 percent while making a school-record 101 treys in 231 attempts. He scored a career-high 40 points in a loss at Humboldt State, tied for fourth-best in school history. Dykstra completed his career as Western s all-time scoring leader with 1,844 points, and ranks fourth in assists (404), sixth in rebounds (576) and seventh in steals (210). He started every game for four years, setting a school record with 113 consecutive starts, and also holds career records for field goals made (646) and attempted (1340), 3-pointers made (279), minutes played (3,734) and fouls (334). Grant s accomplishments speak for themselves and become even more amazing when you consider what he overcame to compete at this level, Jackson said. The thing that was most unique about him was not just that he set all kinds of records, but that he did it with such love for the game and with such enthusiasm. He played the same way every day, in games and in practice, and was an incredible inspiration. Diggs, a first-team all-west Region pick and second-team all- GNAC selection, averaged team-bests of 21.6 points and 4.4 assists a game, and led the Vikings in free-throw percentage (.852, 178-of-209). He also contributed 3.6 rebounds a contest, and set a school record for free throws made (178), leading the GNAC in both attempts and makes. He had a school-record 47 points in a victory over Humboldt State in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, tied the previous high mark with 42 in a victory at Seattle U, and set another school record, this one for free throws without a miss in a single game, hitting all 19 attempts against Sonoma State. Diggs completed his career second in school history in scoring with 1,783 points, and his career average of 16.4 points is the best for any Viking playing more than two seasons. He also ranks seventh in career assists. His scoring average shows the consistency he had for his career, but he also grew into being a great all-around basketball player, said Jackson. Some of the games he had this year were amazing. When he exploded offensively, he was something else to watch. Dykstra and Diggs provided perimeter power. At the post positions, senior forward Tyler Amaya and senior center Tyler MacMullen provided big threats. Amaya averaged 14.8 points and a team-high 8.0 rebounds, scoring 32 points in a victory over Alaska Anchorage and twice grabbing 19 rebounds. MacMullen averaged 14.1 points and 6.8 rebounds, and ranked fourth nationally in field-goal percentage at a school-record 64.8 percent (169-of-231). Completing the starting lineup was senior guard Kyle Jackson. He averaged 8.2 points and 3.5 assists, shooting 43.7 (38-of-87) percent on 3-pointers. The top scorer off the bench was sophomore forward Brett Weisner, who averaged 4.9 points. Senior guard Preston Vermeulen averaged 3.6 points and was a key defensive stopper. Junior center Lucas Henne was the top interior reserve, averaging 3.3 points and 2.0 rebounds. Senior forward Darrell Visser, who made three starts, averaged 1.6 points and 1.5 rebounds. The Vikings were ranked as high as second in the NABC Division II Coaches Top 25 twice during the season, and were No.16 in the final poll. They earned the No.2 seed in the West Regional of the national tournament, defeating Humboldt State in the opening round, then topping Chaminade, , before falling to tourney host and top-seeded Seattle Pacific, 81-77, in the regional championship. Western was 14-0 at home, extending its string of regular-season home victories to a school-record

SAM CARVER GYMNASIUM (Haggen court) HOME OF THE VIKINGS! Dedicated on March 30, 1962, Sam Carver Gymnasium is in its 45th year as the home of Western basketball. Named for Sanford E. Carver, an NAIA Hall of Famer who was Western s first director of athletics and the chairman of the physical education department from , Carver Gym was an addition to the existing physical education facility. It added 54,233 square feet of floor space at a cost of $1.04 million. The most significant addition was the present main gymnasium. The facility opened in time for the basketball season, although it wasn t named for Carver until the dedication ceremony the following spring. Dr. James L. Jarrett, then Western s president, and Dr. E.V. Pullias, a professor at the University of Southern California, were the main speakers at the gathering. Basketball has been the primary event at Carver Gym. The Vikings have racked up an impressive record at Carver Gym, posting a (.755) record over 45 seasons. Western was a much different place when Carver Gym was built. It was a state college, not a university, and the enrollment was a third of the 12,000-plus it is today. Many of the buildings that dot the campus landscape today were either brand new or still many years away from construction. Perhaps the most unique feature of Carver Gym was that it wasn t built on solid ground. It was constructed on a bog, meaning pilings had to be put in the ground before the foundation could be laid. Money spent on the pilings meant a few other plans had to be delayed. The brick that was supposed to be put on the outer walls was never added, and the final set of bleachers wasn t installed until There have been numerous renovations and additions to the building over the last two decades. The most recent improvement came in 2000 with new bleachers, including over 400 theatre-style seats. Since opening, Carver Gym has been host to a number of events. Acts like Jefferson Airplane, Duke Ellington, Simon & Garfunkel, the Tubes, Pat Paulsen, the Smothers Brothers and Ike & Tina Turner have played in the facility. There also have been NBA pre-season games, the Harlem Globetrotters, national basketball teams from Australia, Korea, Japan and Taiwan, and the junior national women s team from the Soviet Union.
