WCU trails in the series but the Catamounts have won six of the last 10 meetings between the two teams. The Catamounts have won just nine of their 33 trips to Greenville over the years. WCU and Furman split the season series last year with both teams winning on their home courts. Furman won in Greenville, while WCU won in Cullowhee, Junior Haboubacar Mutombo scored nine points in the victory over Furman in Cullowhee but did not make an appearance in the game in Greenville last season. Making It Rain From Jan. 2 to Jan. 19 freshman Onno Steger and sophomore Elijah Pughsley were sharpshooters from beyond the 3-point arc. The pair combined to hit 31-of-51 3-pointers (60.8%) over the span of five games. Pughsley averaged 14.4 points per contest over the span while Steger scored at a 10.0 points per game clip. Pughsley nailed 18-of-30 3-point attempts (60.0%) while Steger connected on 12-of-21 attempts (61.9%). The pair struggled in the most recent contest with Mercer hitting just two of their combined 10 3-point attempts. Helping One Another The Catamounts had a Division I season-high 19 assists at VMI (WCU dished out 20 assists against Mars Hill). Junior Devin Peterson surpassed his career-high of five assists in the opening 20 minutes as he handed out six assists. Peterson was limited in the second half due to cramps and finished with a career-best seven assists. Sophomore Elijah Pughsley tied his career mark with five assists while Haboubacar Mutombo came up just one assist short of his career mark with four. The Catamounts matched the 19 assists mark against The Citadel as Devin Peterson once again excelled at sharing the ball. Peterson dished out a career-high 10 assists in the contest becoming the first Catamount with 10 or more assists since Trey Sumler had 10 assists against Niagara during the season. WCU played nearly even basketball with the Paladins in the first half as the Catamounts trailed heading into the break. WCU came out on fire in the second half and shot 57.7 percent from the field in the second stanza as the Paladins struggled to beat the Catamount defense shooting just 38.5 percent in the second half. 6 The contest against WVU was the first time since Dec. 16, 1983 versus Louisiana Tech that the Catamounts did not have a player break the 10-point barrier. Sledd-ing into January WCU freshman Adam Sledd immerged as a steady force in the post for the Catamounts in late December and early January. In the eight games between Dec. 19 and Jan. 14, he averaged a team-best 9.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and led the Catamounts in rebounding in seven of the eight contests. Rebounding The Ball Marc Gosselin (seven times), Haboubacar Mutombo (four times) and Adam Sledd (seven times) have been WCU s go-to rebounders this season. Gosselin led the Catamounts in rebounds against North Carolina Central, Ohio State, Appalachian State, West Virginia, UNC Asheville, High Point and Mercer while Mutombo, a guard, grabbed the lead against Hiwassee, Marshall, Marquette and The Citadel. Sledd has come on late and has led the Catamounts in seven of the last nine games including against College of Charleston, Mars Hill, Chattanooga, Samford, UNCG, VMI and ETSU. They have all surpassed their career-highs in boards this season. Mutombo ripped down a career-best 13 boards against the Thundering Herd, Gosselin had a career-high 14 rebounds at Ohio State and Sledd collected a career-best 12 boards against College of Charleston. Career-Bests Freshman Adam Sledd and junior Ashley Williams posted back-to-back career-high performances against College of Charleston and Mars Hill. Sledd scored a career-best 14 points in the loss to College of Charleston before besting the performance by two points with 16 in the victory over Mars Hill. Williams, who missed the first eight games of the season due to injury scored a career-high 12 points in the loss to the Cougars but exploded for 24 in the victory over Mars Hill. Sophomore Marc Gosselin got into the career-high action against the Lions of MHU as he tied his career-best with 14 points while going 7-of-7 from the floor. CATAMOUNT DID YOU KNOW? Western Carolina s Henry Logan the program s all-time leading scorer helped break the color barrier in college basketball when he signed with Western Carolina in 1964 becoming the first African-American collegiate athlete in the history of North Carolina and perhaps at any predominantly white institution in the southeastern United States. - Logan scored an astounding 3,290 points an average of 30.7 points per game during his WCU career and was a four-time NAIA All-America selection - One of 11 in WCU s initial Athletics Hall of Fame Class, Logan was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in Western Carolina University gave birth to the first 3-point shot in NCAA history as former Catamount Ronnie Carr buried the first 3-pointer in NCAA history in WCU s victory over Middle Tennessee State on Nov. 29, The ball he used is on display at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. - The shot was made from the left corner with 16:09 left in the first half (7:06 pm). - Carr actually took and missed a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the 18:15 mark of the first half. Western Carolina finished as the 1963 NAIA National Runner-Up under head coach Jim Gudger. - WCU posted a 28-7 overall record, won the Carolina s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) Tournament and the NAIA District title. - The Catamounts then rattled off wins on consecutive days over Eastern Montana, Miles, Lewis & Clark and Fort Hayes State before falling in the championship game to Texas Pan American. International Flair Three of Western Carolina s 15 players come from outside the United States. Starting guard Haboubacar Mutombo is from just north of the U.S. in Pickering, Ontario, Canada while WCU s two forwards call Europe home. Sophomore forward Marc Gosselin is a native of Lyon, France while freshman forward Yalim Olcay comes from Izmir, Turkey. Olcay has the longest journey home which is 5,670 miles. Gosselin has to travel 4,439 miles home while Mutombo has a relatively short 861 mile journey. 7 WESTERN CAROLINA HEAD COACH LARRY HUNTER Larry Hunter, one of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) leaders in coaching victories, was named Western Carolina University s 17th head men s basketball coach all time on April 29, His impact was felt immediately. Hunter was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame on May 21, In 45 seasons as a collegiate basketball coach 30 of which were spent in the state of Ohio Hunter put together a resume worthy of induction. He has been a part of 845 wins as a coach including 680 as the leading man on the sideline. Known for his offensive prowess, Hunter brought an up-tempo offense to Cullowhee and the Catamounts responded by making a school-record pointers, while tying or setting the singlegame school record for 3-pointers made in a game on six occasions. The record now stands at 274 made 3-pointers which occurred during the season. The top-eight slots in the school record books for 3-point field goals made in a season belong to Larry Hunter coached teams. Hunter, whose teams posted winning records in 27 of his 36 seasons as a head coach, enters the season boasting an overall record of the ninth winningest active coach in the country. On Nov. 15, 2011, Hunter claimed his 600th career victory. During his time as a head coach, Hunter has made 11 overall NCAA tournament appearances, while making seven as an assistant coach. He has an impressive record in postseason play including trips to the NCAA, NIT, CIT and CBI. Throughout his 36-year head coaching career, Hunter has guided his teams to wins over nationally ranked teams including Louisville, Bradley, Virginia, George Washington, New Mexico State, Syracuse, Connecticut, Stanford, Ohio State, Arizona State, DePaul and West Virginia. Hunter not only leads his teams on the court but he has also been a proven leader in the classroom. All but one player he has recruited who completed his eligibility has graduated. Under Coach Hunter s guidance, the Catamount men s basketball team garnered the APR Public Recognition Award for the fourth-straight year in 2016, the longest consecutive run by any Catamount program. The award is given to athletic teams ranking in the top 10 percent of Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores within the NCAA Division I in their respective sports. Hunter led the Catamounts to a perfect 1000 APR from and then again from Jake Robinson, a 2010 graduate from WCU, was the recipient of SoCon Coleman-Lew Leadership Award and was an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America selection. Hunter has guided Western Carolina to just its second and third Southern Conference divisional titles, sharing both the and crowns with Chattanooga. He also led the Catamounts in setting a Ramsey Center record with 14 home wins in Hunter recruited and coached both the SoCon Freshman of the Year in Harouna Mutombo - WCU s first rookie of the year since Jarvis Hayes in 2000 and only the fourth Catamount all-time to garner the award - and the SoCon Freshman of the Year Trey Sumler. Hunter also recruited and coached WCU s all-time leader in steals, Brigham Waginger, who garnered SoCon Defensive co-player of the Year plaudits in A year later, a Hunter recruit, Richie Gordon, again earned top defensive player honors. While his first year at WCU was just his third losing season as a head coach, posting a mark, Hunter s inaugural season with the Catamounts saw many positives. Western Carolina nearly doubled its win total from the previous season. Also, its 7-7 record and third place finish in the SoCon North was its best in the league since posting the same record for the season, while placing second that season. Key wins in his first season included: a win over Bowling Green in the season opener - WCU s first season-opening win over an NCAA Division I team since defeating Georgia Tech to start the season; a win over Chattanooga - snapping an eight-game losing streak to the Mocs; a win at Davidson - snapping Davidson s 19-game home winning streak which was the third longest in the NCAA at the time; and defeating SoCon North Champion Elon late in the season - setting up a battle for a first-round bye at the league tournament. Western Carolina has rewritten the school record books under Hunter. The Catamounts have set school records for 3-pointers made (274 in ); attempted (753 in ) and threes per game (8.06 in 09-10) in a season, as well as making at least 14, 3-pointers in a game 10 times, including a school-record 20 treys against Charleston Southern on Dec. 18, Hunter s teams have scored over 109 points in a game eight times throughout his tenure at Western Carolina including a school record 141 points in a game during season. Hunter guided the Catamounts to two Southern Conference Tournament Championship games in three years from to He also guided the Catamounts to their best start in SoCon play (4-0) in both the and seasons. During the season, Hunter saw senior Mike Brown become the 46th player in WCU history to reach 1,000 career points. During his 11 years at the helm of the Western Carolina men s basketball program, Hunter has guided ten players to the 1,000 career points mark including the program s third leading scorer all-time Trey Sumler who scored 1,996 points over four seasons under coach Hunter s guidance. Following the season, Hunter guided the Catamounts to just their third postseason tournament in the Division I era at WCU. Two of those trips have come under Hunter s watch including a trip to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) following the season and the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) in Hunter came to Western Carolina after four years as an assistant coach at North Carolina State, the final three serving as associate head coach. In his first season at N.C. State (2002), the Wolfpack reached the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship game and received their first NCAA Championship bid since N.C. State would go on to reach at least the ACC Tournament semifinals in each the last three years as well as receiving bids to the NCAA Championship. In 2004, Hunter coached Julius Hodge, who was tabbed ACC Player of the Year and consensus All-America. In 2005, the Wolfpack made an impressive run at season s end and defeated defending NCAA Champion Connecticut to reach the Sweet 16. N.C. State was just one of 21 teams in the nation to play in the NCAA Championship in each of the last four years. Hunter spent 12 years ( ) as head coach at Ohio University prior to his stint in Raleigh. Five years after taking over the Bobcat bas-

8 ketball program ( ), he led Ohio to a 25-8 record and was tabbed the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Coach of the Year, winning both the league s regular season and tournament titles. The following year, the Bobcats won the preseason National Invitation Tournament (NIT), went and reached the second round of the postseason NIT. At Ohio, he coached 16 All-MAC performers and four first-team Academic All-MAC selections. Among those standout players were Player of the Year honorees Dave Jamerson (1990), Gary Trent (1993, `94 and `95) and Brandon Hunter (2003). Trent additionally earned MAC Freshman of the Year honors in 1993, duplicating the feat of Rush Floyd in 1991 during his freshman campaign with the Bobcats. Jamerson set a MAC record with 874 points in 1990 while taking home first team Academic All-America honors that season. Later in 1990, Jamerson was an National Basketball Association (NBA) first round selection (15th pick overall) by Miami. Trent, a third team Associated Press All-America in 1995, would leave Ohio after his junior season to become a NBA first round selection (11th overall pick) of the Milwaukee Bucks. Brandon Hunter also moved on to play professionally, being an NBA second-round pick in Jamerson (third with 2,336), Trent (seventh with 2,108) and Brandon Hunter (11th with 2,012) all rank among the MAC s top 11 in scoring, while Brandon Hunter and Trent rank fifth (1,103) and ninth (1,050), respectively, on the MAC s career rebounding list. Thirty of the 38 players he coached at Ohio who completed their eligibility there graduated, including 12 who went on to earn their Master s degrees, posting an overall graduation rate as a head coach of 85 percent. In his last season at Ohio, the Bobcats were 19-11, with a 12-6 mark in MAC competition, and his overall record with the Bobcats was After winning his 500th career game as a collegiate head coach (Jan. 23, 2001), Hunter said, My approach has been simple: Arrive early, work late and chop wood all day long. I ve been fortunate to be surrounded by some great people and I ve worked at two great institutions, Wittenberg and Ohio. Add all those things together over 20 years and you start to have a small pile of wood. From , Hunter was the head coach at Wittenberg University, playing a key role in the school being the winningest NCAA Division III basketball program in terms of victories and percentage. Hunter made an immediate impact after taking over the helm, winning National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) National Coach of the Year honors in 1977 after becoming the first coach in NCAA history to win a national championship in his first season at a school. During his 13 years in that position, his team turned in a record and made four NCAA Division III Final Four appearances (national title in 1977, national runner-up in 1983 and third place in 1980 and 1987). He coached three national players of the year at Wittenberg, including Tyrone Curtis (1981), Tim Casey (1985) and Brad Baldridge (1991), as well as having 21 all-conference honors bestowed upon his players. Prior to the inception of the NCAA Division III national player of the year honor, Rick White was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1977 NCAA Tournament as he led Wittenberg to a national title. In addition to coaching those national players of the year, four of Wittenberg s top five career scorers were coached by Hunter, including the school s all-time leader Steve Iannarino (1,973). Hunter won a total of 12 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) titles, six regular-season championships and six tournament championships. For his success, Hunter was inducted into the Wittenberg University Hall of Honor in 1996 and received the school s Honorary Alumnus Award in Hunter, who got his start in coaching as an assistant coach at Marietta College from , graduated from Ohio in 1971 with a B.S. in Education, majoring Social Studies Comprehensive. He earned his Master of Science in Physical Education from Ohio in 1973, then spent three seasons ( ) as an assistant coach at Wittenberg. He got his first taste of postseason play while serving on the Wittenberg staff, reaching the NCAA Division III championship game in In addition to his coaching resume, Hunter produced a basketball instructional video, Drills, Skills and Moves: Post Play Moves & Drills. Hunter is married to the former Mary Kay Friedrich of London, Ohio.
