4 Prince Albert Raiders Game Notes RAIDER REVIEW: The Raiders defeated the Calgary Hitmen 5-2 on Friday night at the Art Hauser Centre. 18-year-old defenceman Josh Morrissey opened the scoring, and 20-year-old winger Collin Valcourt put the Raiders up by two heading into the first intermission. The Hitmen came right back in the second, scoring a pair to even the slate, but 18-year-old pivot Leon Draisaitl regained the Raiders lead before the frame came to a close. 18-yearold defenceman Mackenze Stewart added insurance to start the third, and Draisaitl hit the empty net late in the game to seal the deal for the home side. 16-year-old goaltender Nick McBride stopped 32 of 34 shots faced in his third consecutive victory. VS THE WHEAT KINGS: The Raiders are against their division rivals from Brandon this season. 18-year-old centre Leon Draisaitl has 5 goals and 6 assists for a team-leading 11 points in 5 games against Brandon this season. 19-year-old winger Carson Perreaux has 6 goals against his hometown club while 18-year-old blueliner Josh Morrissey has 4 goals and 4 assists along with a plus-7 rating. 20-year-old goaltender Cole Cheveldave has started all5 games in the season series, with a 4.01 goals against average and.891 save percentage. Gardiner now has 22 goals and 20 assists for 42 points on the season. RARE ROOKIE: Nick McBride is the first 16-year-old to play between the pipes for a full season since Aaron Sorochan guarded the blue paint for the Raiders in DISCIPLINE: This Raiders are on pace to take the fewest penalty minutes in franchise history, breaking the mark of 946 set last season. CENTURY MARK: 18-year-old centre Leon Draisaitl is on pace to reach 104 points this season, which would make him the first Raider to hit the century mark since Steve Kelly got 101 in CLEAR CHEMISTRY: 18-year-old centre Leon Draisaitl has assists on 8 of 18-year-old defenceman Josh Morrissey s last 9 goals, while Morrissey has picked up a point on 9 of the last 14 goals scored by Draisaitl. ALONE AT THE TOP: 18-year-old defensemen Josh Morrissey has set the Raiders franchise record for goals in one season by a defenceman with 26 on the year. Emanuel Viveiros set the previous record of 22 in The Raiders captain leads all WHL defenceman in goals and sits 2 nd in defenceman scoring with 68 points. RAIDERS RANKED: 18-year-old centre Leon Draisaitl has been ranked 2 nd among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting Service s recent Midterm rankings for the 2014 NHL Draft, making him the highest ranked player in the WHL. 17-year-old forward Reid Gardiner holds down the 40 th spot on the list, the 11 th highest player in the WHL. MILESTONES: 19-year-old centre Jayden Hart reached 100 career points on against the Warriors on Tuesaday. 19-year-old winger Dakota Conroy will play in his 200 th career game tonight. 20-year-old goaltender Cole Cheveldave is 2 saves from year-old forward Craig Leverton played in his 150 th game on Tuesday. 5 Brandon Wheat Kings Game Notes GAME PREVIEW The Brandon Wheat Kings look to snap a three-game losing streak when they visit the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday night (6:30 p.m., 880 CKLQ). The Wheat Kings are coming off back-to-back home-ice losses, dropping a 5-1 decision to Calgary on Tuesday and falling 6-3 to Edmonton on Friday night. Brandon enters Saturday s game in a tie with Red Deer for seventh-place in the WHL s Eastern Conference, two points ahead of the ninth-place Raiders. SEASON SERIES Brandon is against Prince Albert so far this season, with Saturday s matchup the last of the six head-to-head meetings between the East Division rivals. The Wheat Kings only previous visit to Prince Albert was for a doubleheader in late September, with the Raiders prevailing 8-6 on Sept.27 and 4-2 on Sept.28. John Quenneville leads Brandon with seven points (6 G, 1 A) in five games against Prince Albert while Rihards Bukarts has six points (4 G, 2 A). TEAM NOTES Wheat Kings Boast Six 20-Goal Scorers Brandon has six players that have scored 20 or more goals so far this season, one of only two WHL teams to accomplish that feat. Tim McGauley scored his 20 th of the season last Sunday in Swift Current, joining Richard Nejezchleb (30), Jayce Hawryluk (24), Rihards Bukarts (24), John Quenneville (23) and Ryan Pulock (21) as Brandon players with 20 or more goals. Special Teams Update The Wheat Kings power-play has been one of the best in the WHL through the season, and enter Friday s game second in the WHL with a 25.2% success rate (74-for-294) for the season. Brandon is 12-for-35 (34.3%) over their last eight games. On the penalty-kill, Brandon is ranked 17 th with a 76.3% kill rate, and are 48-for-58 (82.8%) over their last 17 games. Defence Core Producing The Wheat Kings have four blueliners with 30 or more points this season in Ryan Pulock (55), Eric Roy (40), Ryan Pilon (31) and Rene Hunter (31). Brandon is one of only three teams in the WHL to have four defencemen with 30 or more points (Calgary, Regina). PLAYER NOTES Hawryluk Earns WHL Player of the Week Honours Brandon Wheat Kings' forward Jayce Hawryluk was named the Western Hockey League Player of the Week for the week of Feb.24 Mar.2. Hawryluk had six goals and four assists for ten points in three games last week, helping the Wheat Kings earn five of a possible six points. The Roblin product leads the Wheat Kings in scoring with 64 points. It's Hawryluk's second Player of the Week award this season. Pulock Hits Milestones Wheat Kings captain Ryan Pulock became a franchise record holder last weekend. Pulock scored his 62 nd career goal Mar.1 in Saskatoon, passing Brad McCrimmon for most career goals by a defenceman. Pulock also recently became just the fifth Brandon blueliner to hit the 200- point plateau, joining Brad McCrimmon (279), Cam Plante (248), Burke Henry (207) and Justin Kurtz (200). Pulock has 62 goals and 202 points in 257 career games. Papirny Named Player of Month Rookie goaltender Jordan Papirny was named the Wheat Kings IMPACT Player of the Month for February earlier this week. Papirny posted a record last month with 2.86 goals against average and a.920 save percentage. The 17-year old was the 22 nd overall pick in the 2011 Bantam Draft and is the only goaltender ever drafted in the first round by the Wheat Kings.
