Spokane hopes to maintain momentum created off wins in three of their last four games, including back-to-back victories over the weekend; 5-2 vs. Kootenay on Saturday and 4-3 in a shootout at Everett on Sunday. Five different players scored for the home team on Saturday, with Ty Smith s power play score midway through the third proving to be the game-winner as the Chiefs outshot the ICE, Kailer Yamamoto scored a goal and added an assist on Sunday while Riley Woods potted a highlight reel goal in regulation before snapping in the only successful attempt of the shootout to push Spokane to their full four-point weekend. Tonight is the 8 th of 10 head-to-head matchups between these two clubs this season and 4 th of 5 at Spokane Arena. The Chiefs are in the first seven contests, most recently a 6-4 loss in Kent on January 15. Kailer Yamamoto led the Chiefs with 2 goals in that game as the Chiefs fell short on a late comeback bid. Ethan Bear scored a goal and added an assist while Keegan Kolesar picked up 3 helpers for the T-Birds. Spokane s last win over Seattle came back on December 28, 5-4 in OT, as Yamamoto had a 4-point night (1G, 3A) and Hudson Elynuik scored twice (plus an assist) to lead the way. Yamamoto leads all players in the season series with 13 points (6G, 7A) in the first 7 games. Jaret Anderson-Dolan (3-4-7), Elynuik (3-2-5) and older brother Keanu Yamamoto (0-4-4) have been the other key contributors up front for the Chiefs. Seattle s scoring has been evenly spread, with 7 different players picking up at least 2 goals in the 7 matchups, led by Kolesar (3-4-7) and Bear (2-5-7). Spokane hit a bit of a slump early this month, losing 5 of 6 games from Jan. 7-15, thanks in large part to a struggling penalty kill. After a stretch in which they allowed only 2 power play goals against over an eight game stretch in late December and early January, the Chiefs allowed 7 in 4 games (on 15 chances) before the last two wins, including 3 at Seattle on Sunday. They were a perfect 4-for-4 vs. Kootenay on Saturday and 3-for-3 at Everett on Sunday, helping the Chiefs earn wins. Spokane s power play has been steady, scoring a goal in 7 of their last 10 games.

3 KNOCK ON WOODS Riley Woods, acquired from Regina at the trade deadline, has fit right in with his new team, with 3 goals & 5 assists in 10 games with the Chiefs, including 1 goal and the shootout winner vs. Everett on Jan. 22, to extend his point streak to four-games. Woods is in his 2 nd WHL season after scoring 9 goals and 5 assists as a rookie for Regina last year. THEY RE WATCHING The Chiefs had five players named to the NHL Central Scouting s Midterm Rankings in advance of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft in June. Kailer Yamamoto led the way at 17 th among North American skaters, while Jaret Anderson-Dolan came in a 40 th and Ethan McIndoe at 141 st. Jake McGrew earned a ranking with a Limited Viewing tag while Dawson Weatherill was 31 st among North American goalies. NOT BAD, JAD Second-year forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan has turned up the heat over the last month with 12G and 13A over his last 19 games including 2G & 6A over the last 4. He has 5 multi-goal games this season after recording one last year. He was listed at 31 st overall in ISS s January rankings for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and 40 th in the CSS Midterm Rankings. NUIK WITH THE PUCK Hudson Elynuik has been a catalyst for the Chiefs, with 12 points (5G, 8A) over the last 13 game as he has tied Kailer Yamamoto for the team lead in assists. Elynuik has recorded 11 multi-point games, including two 4-point games (Oct. 1 & Jan. 6) and a 5-point game (Nov. 25). He has 4 multi-goal games. TAKE NOTICE Kailer Yamamoto has been on a torrid pace during his draft year. The third-year forward has 62 points (30G, 32A) in 41 GP so far this season, good for 9 th on the WHL s points list. He piled up 5G & 13A on a 9-game point streak snapped on NYE after another 9-game streak earlier this season. He has 20 multi-point games, including six 3-point games and one 4-point (1G & 3A vs SEA on 12/28). The Chiefs are when Yamamoto scores a goal. He was named to the 2017 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Quebec and will play for Team Orr. Yamamoto earned WHL Player of the Week honors on Oct. 31. He has been blanked from the stat sheet just seven times (once leaving early with injury). With a late birthday, he will first become eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in A Spokane native, he impressed in stints at international tournaments w/ Team USA (Five Nations, U-18, U-20 NJEC) and produced 128 points (42G, 86A) in his first 2 seasons with the Chiefs (125 GP). Multiple news outlets project Yamamoto as a future 1 st round pick, including Sportsnet s January rankings with him at 22 nd overall. NO TIME TO WAIT Defenseman Ty Smith, the 1 st overall pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft, has already found himself playing top minutes and quarterbacking the Chiefs power play. The Lloydminster product ranks t-16 th in the WHL among rookies (2 points behind fellow Chief Ondrej Najman) with 19 points. He is tied for 4 th among 16-year-olds. SHAKE IT UP On Dec. 14, the Chiefs completed a trade with the Saskatoon Blades that brought 19-year-old forward Wyatt Sloboshan and 18-year-old defenseman Nolan Reid to the Lilac City while sending overage forward Markson Bechtold and 19-yearold defenseman Evan Fiala to the Blades. Spokane also acquired a 3 rd round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. On January 2, the Chiefs flipped Sloboshan and the 3 rd round pick to Regina for wingers Rykr Cole (97) and Riley Woods (98) while shipping LW Curtis Miske (97) to Prince Albert for a th round pick. Woods scored the OT winner vs. Kelowna in his 1 st game as a Chief on Jan. 4. TURN IT ONDREJ Rookie Czech forward Ondrej Najman ranks 11 th in the WHL in scoring by a rookie with 4 goals and 17 assists for 21 points, including 2G and an assist over the last 5 games. VETERAN ADDITION On Dec. 27, the Chiefs added 20-year-old Alex Mowbray. The 5-foot-11 forward previously played 177 games with the Medicine Hat Tigers, including a 22-point (11G, 11A) campaign last season. This year, he was playing for the Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL), where he had 20 points (10G, 10A) and 73 PIM in 32 games. MAKE THEM COUNT Spokane has actually fared better with fewer shots as they are when putting fewer than 30 shots on goal, but only when they get 30+ pucks through to the opposing goaltender. They put a season-high 52 shots on goal against Seattle on Dec. 28 in a 5-4 OT win and 50 vs. Kootenay on Jan. 21 (5-2 W). SEND THE HATS FLYING On Nov. 25 vs. Vancouver, teammates Hudson Elynuik and Jaret Anderson-Dolan each recorded a hat trick. It was Spokane s first multiple hat trick game since the season, when Mitch Holmberg and Dominic Zwerger each tallied 3 goals against Kamloops (Feb. 23, 2014; 9-4 W). Anderson-Dolan added his second of the year on Dec. 7 vs. VIC. BIG BROTHER The older of the Yamamoto brothers, Keanu, has picked up 28 assists in 47 games including a team-leading 15 power play helpers and a 6-assist game on Nov. 25 vs. Vancouver, which tied for the 2 nd -most assists in one game in franchise history. He broke a career-high 14-game point streak (8G-12A) on Dec. 27, including 4-game goal streak ending on Dec. 7. Keanu is the elder statesman on this year s Chiefs squad with 246 games played. The Yamamoto brothers have been left off the stat sheet just three times this season, with at least one of the two recording a point in 44 of 47 games. BLACK & WHITE Three Chiefs D Ty Smith, F Koby Morrisseau and F Eli Zummack were named by Hockey Canada to the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Ontario (Oct. 27 Nov. 5). Smith and Zummack competed for Team Canada Black while Morrisseau is on Team White. Smith was also honored as team captain for Canada Black and tallied two goals in Black s 4-3 win over Team USA to clinch their group. Black went on to earn silver as Smith and Zummack partnered up for their only goal in a 2-1 loss to Sweden. Morrisseau and Canada White fell in the bronze medal game to Russia.

4 CLEAN SHEET The Chiefs set a franchise record unlikely to be broken on Saturday, Nov. 12 vs. Everett as they incurred zero penalty minutes. The previous record (2) had been reached twice previously. LINE IN THE SAND The Chiefs have been steadily successful when controlling things in their own end this season. They are when allowing 2 or fewer goals against but with allowing 3 or more. HURRICANE HUDSON Chiefs forward Hudson Elynuik was selected in the third round (74 th overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. The towering centerman scored 19 goals and added 25 assists in 56 GP last season, turning heads after the turn of the calendar year with a point in 17 of 20 games starting on January 9, including a 10-game point streak. Elynuik s father Pat was the 8 th Overall pick in the 1986 draft to the Winnipeg Jets & went on to play 500+ NHL games. HEY MR. CARTER... Scott Carter was announced as the Chiefs new GM on Sept. 8. A Penticton, B.C. native, Carter boasts 28+ years of experience as a hockey scout, business manager and entrepreneur. He was an NHL regional scout from , President & GM of the Penticton Vees from , BCHL Executive of the Year in 2005, co-founder of the BCHHF in 1991, co-founder of the WPHL in 1994 and has been a full partner in Vaughn Custom Sports since Carter replaced long-time GM Tim Speltz, who took the Director of Western Area Scouting for the Toronto Maple Leafs after 26 years at the helm of the Chiefs. NATIONAL NODS The Spokane Chiefs had 6 players recognized with invitations to national team camps over the summer. Four players D Ty Smith, D Matt Leduc, F Eli Zummack and F Koby Morrisseau were invited to Hockey Canada s U17 camp. Jaret Anderson-Dolan went to Canada s U18 camp. Kailer Yamamoto competed at USA Hockey s National Junior Evaluation Camp, then joined Team USA at the USA Hockey CCM All-American Prospects Game in Philadelphia on Sept. 22 (he recorded 2A & a +1). BENCH BOSS Don Nachbaur is in his 7 th season as head coach having signed an extension through the season. The WHL veteran ranks 1 st in franchise history in career wins (254) and eclipsed Mike Babcock this season for the all-time lead in career games coached for the Chiefs earlier this season (now at 468). Entering the season, his.552 winning percentage with Spokane ranked 2 nd behind Hardy Sauter (.629). Nachbaur is one of four WHL coaches with 600+ career wins (685). He is also the winningest coach in Tri- City Americans history w/ 235. CZECH THEM OUT The Chiefs drafted Czech teammates Ondrej Najman and Pavel Kousal with the 22 nd & 82 nd picks, respectively, in the 2016 CHL Import Draft. Najman scored 18 goals & 44 points in 38 GP, including 4 multi-goal games, adding 3 goals & 3 assists in 5 games with the Czechs at the 2016 IIHF U18 World Championship in Grand Forks, N.D. Kousal racked up 20 goals & 23 assists in the same 38 GP, including a stretch in which he scored a point in 11 of 12 games. He recorded 3 assists with the Czechs at the U18s.
