They lost at Regina and Brandon before ripping off three-straight wins against the Moose Jaw Warriors (6-2), Saskatoon Blades (6-2) and Prince Albert Raiders (4-2). They capped their trip with a narrow 3-2 overtime loss at Swift Current despite outshooting the Broncos Defenseman Evan Fiala scored his first goal of the season in the loss on Saturday. Spokane hosts Red Deer tonight, a year removed from a 3-1 win over the Rebels in Alberta on Oct. 30, 2015, in which Red Deer doubled up the Chiefs in the shot department, Goaltender Tyson Verhelst made 45 saves, including 26 in the final 20 minutes, to earn first star honors. Red Deer came away with a 2-1 victory in their last visit to Spokane Arena back on Nov. 1, 2014 in another backwards affair; the Chiefs outshot the Rebels but couldn t solve netminder Taz Burman, who made 38 saves. Tyler Sandhu and Evan Polei scored for Red Deer while Markson Bechtold netted the Chiefs marker. The young Chiefs hope their recent road trip together may have found some chemistry as they pushed their road record to They now hope to build on that success at home, where they ve struggled so far this year, losing 4 of 6 to start the year. They ll need their home ice advantage this month, as they stray from Spokane just once in 10 games. It s been a tale of two teams this year for the Chiefs; in their 6 wins, they have outscored their opponent 26-10, but in their 9 losses, they ve been outscored Spokane has actually fared better with fewer shots as they are when putting less than 30 shots on goal, but only when they get 30 or more pucks through to the opposing goaltender. 3 TAKE NOTICE Kailer Yamamoto has been on a torrid pace to begin his draft year. The third-year forward has 23 points (10G-13A; 3 rd WHL) in 15 games to start the season, including 3G & 4A in the last four, earning him WHL Player of the Week honors. He has a team-leading 9 points during power plays and has been blanked from the stat sheet just three times. With a late Sept. birthday, he will first become eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in A Spokane native, he impressed in stints at international tournaments with Team USA (Five Nations, U-18, U-20 NJEC) and produced 128 points (42 goals and 86 assists) in his first two seasons with the Chiefs (125 games). Multiple news outlets project Yamamoto as a future first round pick, most recently Sportsnet s updated rankings with him at 14 th overall. WISH UPON A STAR F Tanner Wishnowski, since being acquired by the Chiefs from Kelowna on Oct. 17, has been a valuable addition, scoring a point in 5 of his 7 games (2G, 5A). He posted 2 assists in his first game as a Chief. COOL AND COLLECTED Rookie defenseman and former first overall pick Ty Smith came into Spokane with high expectations and hasn t disappointed. The 16-year-old has 7 points (1G, 6A) in 11 GP, good for 12 th among WHL rookies. HOUSE SPECIAL The Chiefs have been solid on the power play this season, capitalizing with 13 goals in 60 chances (21.7%; 8 th WHL). Power plays account for 24% of the team s goals through 15 games. The penalty kill, on the other hand, struggled mightily to begin the season but has bounced back, allowing just 4 goals in their last 36 shorthanded situations, including a perfect 9-for-9 night at Saskatoon on Oct. 26. They now rank 13 th (78.3%) in the WHL. BIG BROTHER The older of the Yamamoto brothers, Keanu, has picked up 9 assists in 15 games including 5 power play helpers and a 4-game point streak in early October. Keanu is the elder statesman on this year s Chiefs squad with 213 games played. The Yamamoto brothers have been left off the stat sheet just once this season, with one of the two recording a point in 14 of 15 games. YOUTH MOVEMENT The Chiefs are one of the youngest teams in the WHL this season; 17 players born in 1998 or later, including seven 17-year-olds and three 16-year-olds. Nine of the 17 are WHL rookies. A WHL rookie has scored a goal for the Chiefs in 3 of their last 4 home games. BLACK & WHITE Three Chiefs D Ty Smith, F Koby Morrisseau and F Eli Zummack were named by Hockey Canada to the upcoming 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Ontario (Oct. 27 Nov. 5). Smith and Zummack are on Canada Team Black while Morrisseau is on Team White. Smith was also honored as team captain for Canada Black and tallied two goals in Black s 4-3 win over Team USA to clinch their group on Tuesday. ROOKIE STANDS TALL Rookie goaltender Dawson Weatherill made his first appearance as a Chief in relief on Oct. 7 vs. Lethbridge, jumping in at the 7:30 of the second period and was perfect to close out the game. He made his first start as a Chief the following night against the Victoria Royals, making 31 saves on 34 shots faced, then stone-walled the Seattle Thunderbirds in Kent on Oct. 11 with 44 saves on his way to 1 st Star honors in a 3-1 win. Most recently, Weatherill made 24 saves in a 3-2 OTL to Swift Current on Saturday. He ranks 9 th in GAA (2.66) & 11 th in SV% (.914). HIGHWAY TO HELGESEN Third-year defenseman Tyson Helgesen was named the Chiefs team captain in a pre-game ceremony on October 1. He takes over for two-year leader Jason Fram. Helgesen scored the game-winning goal in his first game wearing the C ; a 5-2 win over Tri-City. Elynuik s father Pat was the 8 th Overall pick in the 1986 draft to the Winnipeg Jets & went on to play 500+ NHL games.
