Spokane looks to build momentum off a big win on the road on Wednesday, 3-2 over Kamloops. Czech forwards Pavel Kousal (2) and Ondrej Najman provided the goal-scoring for Spokane in a gritty defensive effort, as the Chiefs were a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill and held the Blazers to only 27 SOG. Wednesday s game was Spokane s only venture out of town this month; tonight marks their 7 th of 9 home games in November. Home and away hasn t mattered much so far for the Chiefs, with their home record ( ) very similar to their road results ( ). The Chiefs have alternated wins and losses over their last six games ( ) and have earned a point in 9 of their last 11 games. Spokane went 2-0 against the Giants last season; a 3-2 win at Spokane Arena on Nov. 26, 2015, and a 6-2 win at Pacific Coliseum on Feb. 4, Keanu Yamamoto had the game-winning goal and an assist in the 3-2 game as Vancouver scored twice in the final four minutes to make things interesting. Markson Bechtold earned first star honors in the 6-2 win in Vancouver with 1G & 1A. Six different Chiefs scored with now-captain Tyson Helgesen s power play marker in the first period proving to be the winner. Chase Lang scored both of Vancouver s goals to earn the game s second star. The Giants have hit a rough patch lately, losing three straight including a 5-1 loss at Tri-City on Wednesday night, despite outshooting the Americans and scoring the game s first goal (Tyler Popowich; 3:11 in the first). Vancouver returns to Kennewick tomorrow night for a rematch against the Americans. Spokane has been inconsistent this season; in their 9 wins, they have outscored their opponent (+2.3 average), but in their 13 losses, they ve been outscored (-2.5). Spokane has actually fared better with fewer shots as they are when putting fewer than 30 shots on goal, but only when they get 30+ pucks through to the opposing goaltender. The Chiefs have won seven games in a row against Vancouver. Their last loss to the Giants came on Sept. 30, 2012 (2-3). The last loss head-to-head loss at Spokane Arena came on Feb. 12, 2012 (1-2). These two teams will complete their season series at the Langley Events Center on December 10. TONIGHT S OFFICIALS --- Referees: Colin WATT, Sean RAPHAEL Linesmen: Jeremi DEL CAMPO, Anthony GUZZO

3 LINE IN THE SAND The Chiefs have been steadily successful when controlling things in their own end this season. They are when allowing 2 or fewer goals against but with allowing 3 or more goals. TAKE NOTICE Kailer Yamamoto has been on a torrid pace to begin his draft year. The third-year forward has 31 points (17G- 14A; 4 th WHL) in 21 games to start the season, including 10G & 5A on recently broken 9-game point streak. He earned WHL Player of the Week honors on Oct. 31. He has a team-leading 10 points during PPs (4 goals) and has been blanked from the stat sheet just four times (once leaving early with injury). With a late birthday, he will first become eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in A Spokane native, he impressed in stints at international tournaments w/ Team USA (Five Nations, U-18, U-20 NJEC) and produced 128 points (42 goals and 86 assists) in his first 2 seasons with the Chiefs (125 games). Multiple news outlets project Yamamoto as a future 1st round pick, most recently Sportsnet s updated rankings with him at 14 th overall. THEY RE WATCHING The Chiefs had five forwards named to the NHL Central Scouting s preliminary Players to Watch list, as announced on Oct. 4 with goaltender Dawson Weatherill joining the same five in their updated November list. Kailer Yamamoto earned an A rating, indicating a potential first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Jaret Anderson-Dolan got a B (2 nd -3 rd ) while four players Ethan McIndoe, Pavel Kousal, Jake McGrew, and Weatherill earned C scores. COOL AND COLLECTED Rookie defenseman and former first overall pick Ty Smith came into Spokane with high expectations and hasn t disappointed. The 16-year-old has 9 points (1G, 8A) in 16 GP, tied for 14 th among WHL rookies. He picked up two assists on Nov. 12 in his first game back from the World U-17 Hockey Challenge. CLEAN SHEET The Chiefs set a franchise record unlikely to be broken on Saturday, Nov. 12 vs. Everett as they incurred zero penalty minutes. The previous record (2) had been reached twice previously. POWER REVERSAL The Chiefs power play, after starting the season with 9 goals in their first 24 chances, hit a slump in late October, with a stretch of 1 goal in 23 chances. They ve regained their touch lately, scoring 4 PPGs in their last 3 games (11 PPs). The penalty kill bounced back from a rough start to begin the year but has recently returned to bad habits, allowing 11 goals over the last 9 games (35 PKs). BIG BROTHER The older of the Yamamoto brothers, Keanu, has picked up 12 assists in 22 games including 6 power play helpers. Keanu is the elder statesman on this year s Chiefs squad with 220 games played. The Yamamoto brothers have been left off the stat sheet just once this season, with one of the two recording at least a point in 21 of 22 games. YOUTH MOVEMENT The Chiefs are one of the youngest teams in the WHL this season; 18 players born in 1998 or later, including seven 17-year-olds and four 16-year-olds. Ten of the 18 are WHL rookies. BLACK & WHITE Three Chiefs D Ty Smith, F Koby Morrisseau and F Eli Zummack were named by Hockey Canada to the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Ontario (Oct. 27 Nov. 5). Smith and Zummack competed for Team Canada Black while Morrisseau is on Team White. Smith was also honored as team captain for Canada Black and tallied two goals in Black s 4-3 win over Team USA to clinch their group. Black went on to earn silver as Smith and Zummack partnered up for their only goal in a 2-1 loss to Sweden. Morrisseau and Canada White fell in the bronze medal game to Russia. HIGHWAY TO HELGESEN Third-year defenseman Tyson Helgesen was named the Chiefs team captain in a pre-game ceremony on October 1. He takes over for two-year leader Jason Fram. Helgesen scored the game-winning goal in his first game wearing the C ; a 5-2 win over Tri-City. PREMIER PROSPECTS Three Chiefs prospects all forwards competed for their respective provincial teams at the 2016 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup. Carter Chorney (2 nd Rd, 39 th Overall in 2016 WHL Bantam Draft) scored two points for Alberta, including the GWG in OT of the championship game, Ethan Leyh (8 th, 160 th ) racked up 3G & 4A for BC and Cordel Larson (9 th, 186 th ) represented Team Saskatchewan. HURRICANE HUDSON Chiefs forward Hudson Elynuik was selected in the third round (74 th overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. The towering centerman scored 19 goals and added 25 assists in 56 GP last season, turning heads after the turn of the calendar year with a point in 17 of 20 games starting on January 9, including a 10-game point streak. Elynuik s father Pat was the 8 th Overall pick in the 1986 draft to the Winnipeg Jets & went on to play 500+ NHL games. NEW ERA Long-time Spokane GM Tim Speltz announced on 8/16 that he accepted a job with Toronto Maple Leafs and stepped down from his position with the Chiefs. Hired in 1990, Speltz reigned over a 26-year run of success rivaled by very few in the WHL, including 961 regular season wins, 23 playoff appearances, 142 playoff wins, seven trips to the Western Conference Finals, four to the WHL Finals, two WHL Championships and two Memorial Cup Championships.
