In their first game at home in over two weeks, the Chiefs came out sluggish, getting behind 2-0 in the first period before climbing back into the game, eventually tying it and forcing overtime at 3-3. Both Yamamoto brothers scored, including Kailer s tying goal with under four minutes left in regulation. Hudson Elynuik potted his 5 th of the season as well. Michael Spacek won it for the Rebels on a PP in overtime. Spokane hopes to repeat their last game against the Americans, as they came away with a decisive 5-2 win here at the Arena back on Oct. 1. Elynuik led the way with four points (1G, 3A) including the assist on team captain Tyson Helgesen s gamewinning goal at the 5:25 mark of the third period. Kailer Yamamoto scored twice and added an assist, Ethan McIndoe had two assists and a +3 rating, and Jayden Sittler made 30 saves in the win. Morgan Geekie and Dylan Coghlan scored for the Americans. It hasn t all been rosy against Tri-City, however, as Spokane fell 8-3 in the season opener in Kennewick on Sept. 24, with Michael Rasmussen (4G) and Vladislav Lukin (3G, 3A) leading the way for the Americans. The Yamamoto brothers put in one goal each, joined by Jaret Anderson-Dolan as the Chiefs scorers. The young Chiefs hope their recent road trip through the East Division may have built some chemistry as they pushed their road record to They hope to build on that success at home, where they ve struggled so far, losing 5 of 7 to start the year. They ll need their home ice advantage this month, as they stray from Spokane just once in 10 games (11/23 at Kamloops). It s been a tale of two teams this year for the Chiefs; in their 6 wins, they have outscored their opponent 26-10, but in their 10 losses, they ve been outscored Spokane has actually fared better with fewer shots as they are when putting less than 30 shots on goal, but only when they get 30 or more pucks through to the opposing goaltender. Spokane has earned a point in their last six games, with their recent back-to-back overtime losses preceded by a four-game winning streak. 3 TAKE NOTICE Kailer Yamamoto has been on a torrid pace to begin his draft year. The third-year forward has 24 points (11G-13A; t- 3 rd WHL) in 16 games to start the season, including 4G & 4A in the last five. He earned WHL Player of the Week honors last week. He has a team-leading 9 points during power plays and has been blanked from the stat sheet just three times. With a late Sept. birthday, he will first become eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in A Spokane native, he impressed in stints at international tournaments with Team USA (Five Nations, U-18, U-20 NJEC) and produced 128 points (42 goals and 86 assists) in his first two seasons with the Chiefs (125 games). Multiple news outlets project Yamamoto as a future first round pick, most recently Sportsnet s updated rankings with him at 14 th overall. WISH UPON A STAR F Tanner Wishnowski, since being acquired by the Chiefs from Kelowna on Oct. 17, has been a valuable addition, scoring a point in 5 of his 8 games (2G, 5A). He posted 2 assists in his first game as a Chief. COOL AND COLLECTED Rookie defenseman and former first overall pick Ty Smith came into Spokane with high expectations and hasn t disappointed. The 16-year-old has 7 points (1G, 6A) in 11 GP, good for 13 th among WHL rookies. POWER REVERSAL The Chiefs power play, after starting the season with 9 goals in their first 24 chances, has hit a slump, scoring only 4 goals in their last 38, including 0 over the last three games (13 PPs). The penalty kill, on the other hand, struggled mightily to begin the season (12 goals in 32 chances over the first 7 games) but has bounced back, allowing just 5 goals in their last 40 shorthanded situations, including a perfect 9-for-9 night at Saskatoon on Oct. 26. They now rank 13 th (78.3%) in the WHL. BIG BROTHER The older of the Yamamoto brothers, Keanu, has picked up 9 assists in 16 games including 5 power play helpers and a 4-game point streak in early October. Keanu is the elder statesman on this year s Chiefs squad with 215 games played. The Yamamoto brothers have been left off the stat sheet just once this season, with one of the two recording a point in 15 of 16 games. YOUTH MOVEMENT The Chiefs are one of the youngest teams in the WHL this season; 17 players born in 1998 or later, including seven 17-year-olds and three 16-year-olds. Nine of the 17 are WHL rookies. A WHL rookie has scored a goal for the Chiefs in 3 of their last 5 home games. BLACK & WHITE Three Chiefs D Ty Smith, F Koby Morrisseau and F Eli Zummack were named by Hockey Canada to the upcoming 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Ontario (Oct. 27 Nov. 5). Smith and Zummack are on Canada Team Black while Morrisseau is on Team White. Smith was also honored as team captain for Canada Black and tallied two goals in Black s 4-3 win over Team USA to clinch their group on Tuesday. Both teams won in shootouts on Friday to advance to medal games; Black to the gold medal game vs. Sweden and White to the bronze vs. Russia. ROOKIE STANDS TALL Rookie goaltender Dawson Weatherill made his first appearance as a Chief in relief on Oct. 7 vs. Lethbridge, jumping in at the 7:30 of the second period and was perfect to close out the game. He made his first start as a Chief the following night against the Victoria Royals, making 31 saves on 34 shots faced, then stone-walled the Seattle Thunderbirds in Kent on Oct. 11 with 44 saves on his way to 1 st Star honors in a 3-1 win. Most recently, Weatherill made 24 saves in a 3-2 OTL to Swift Current on Saturday. He ranks 9 th in GAA (2.66) & 12 th in SV% (.914). THEY RE WATCHING The Chiefs had five forwards named to the NHL Central Scouting s preliminary Players to Watch list, as announced on Oct. 4. Kailer Yamamoto earned an A rating, indicating a potential first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Jaret Anderson-Dolan got a B (2 nd -3 rd ) while three players Ethan McIndoe, Pavel Kousal & Jake McGrew earned C scores. HIGHWAY TO HELGESEN Third-year defenseman Tyson Helgesen was named the Chiefs team captain in a pre-game ceremony on October 1. He takes over for two-year leader Jason Fram. Helgesen scored the game-winning goal in his first game wearing the C ; a 5-2 win over Tri-City. PREMIER PROSPECTS Three Chiefs prospects all forwards competed for their respective provincial teams at the 2016 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup. HURRICANE HUDSON Chiefs forward Hudson Elynuik was selected in the third round (74 th overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. The towering centerman scored 19 goals and added 25 assists in 56 GP last season, turning heads after the turn of the calendar year with a point in 17 of 20 games starting on January 9, including a 10-game point streak. Elynuik s father Pat was the 8 th Overall pick in the 1986 draft to the Winnipeg Jets & went on to play 500+ NHL games. ALL-AMERICAN F Kailer Yamamoto played in the USA Hockey CCM All-American Prospects Game in Philadelphia on Sept. 22, featuring 42 of the top American-born prospects for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
