7 PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS GAME NOTES PORTLAND SPOKANE ( ) OCTOBER 15, 2016 LAST GAME: PORTLAND REGINA 4 (OT): Caleb Jones scored an overtime winner as the Portland Winterhawks continued their trip through the East Division with a 5-4 win in Regina Wednesday against the Pats. With just under a minute to go in the extra frame of what was a wild game, Jones carried the puck into the Regina zone on a two-on-one, kept the puck and wired it past goaltender Tyler Brown to give the Hawks the win in their first overtime game of the season. The victory continued what s been an excellent road trip, with the Hawks 5-2 on their trek. After a scoreless first period, Portland s Lane Gilliss opened the scoring 5:40 into the second for a 1-0 lead. Regina s Adam Brooks responded at 17:51 as the two teams went into the third tied 1-1. After the teams combined for just a pair of goals in the first 40 minutes, the third period turned into an offensive barrage. The Hawks struck twice in a span of 26 seconds as Evan Weinger and Colton Veloso scored on back-to-back shifts as they jumped out to a 3-1 lead five minutes into the frame. Just 34 seconds after Veloso s goal, Brooks scored his second of the game to cut the Hawks lead to 3-2. Regina then got power play goals from Sam Steel and Filip Ahl as they took a 4-3 lead midway through the third. With just about three minutes to go and the Hawks on a 5-on-3 power play for a full two minutes, defenseman Keoni Texeira ripped a shot past Regina netminder Tyler Brown to tie it again at 4-4 and set up the Hawks first overtime of the season, where Jones would end up netting the winner.
