Another Western Hockey League season has arrived and we are excited to unveil the latest edition of the world s premier junior hockey players as they take to the ice with our 22 WHL Clubs throughout Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. As we embark on our 53rd WHL season, the WHL Player Experience continues to be the top priority for our WHL member Clubs. Our Clubs are committed to providing our players with the highest standard of development, both on and off the ice. The WHL takes great pride in offering world-class coaching and North America s most comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program, along with an extensive series of support services which ensures our players continue their development in a safe and positive environment. Ron Robison Commissioner Establishing a new record with 382 post-secondary scholarships awarded to WHL graduates this past season, the WHL Scholarship continues to pave a road to an unmatched educational opportunity for WHL alumni as they pursue their academic goals. Of the 382 WHL graduates who accessed their WHL Scholarship, 183 continued their hockey development by playing Canadian University hockey at the U SPORTS level this past season. The WHL season will feature many special events. With the 2019 NHL Draft set for Vancouver in June, we are excited for the opportunity to showcase what we believe will be one of the strongest NHL Draft classes in WHL history. Not only will these players be on display nightly in WHL markets, fans will have the opportunity to see these standards in Red Deer a hub for WHL activity in 2019 at the Sherwin Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in January. Once again, Red Deer will host the WHL Awards and WHL Bantam Draft in May. Meanwhile, Kamloops and Vancouver will host the 2018 CIBC Canada Russia Series in November, as Team WHL takes on the Russian National Team in a preview of the 2019 World Junior Championship. Through the support of major junior hockey s best fans, our corporate partners, broadcasters and media the WHL is in a position to provide our players with a world-class experience. Your passion and loyalty to the WHL and our 22 member Clubs is greatly appreciated. The WHL season promises to be exciting as our Clubs battle for a playoff berth and opportunity to capture the Ed Chynoweth Cup. 10 Welcome to Kent and to the Seattle Thunderbirds season! We are thrilled to have you and your family join us for another exciting season with the Seattle Thunderbirds. The year s home opener will be at accesso ShoWare Center on Saturday, September 22 as the T-Birds start their bid to return to the WHL Finals for the third time in four seasons. This will be an exciting season under the direction of head coach Matt O Dette, now in his second season. There will be several new faces this year, but also many key returners. Jarret Tyszka and Reece Harsch will anchor the blue line for the T-Birds this season. Tyszka was recently at Montreal Canadiens Development Camp while Harsch was at the Las Vegas Golden Knights Development Camp. Nolan Volcan, Zack Andrusiak and Noah Philp return to the lead the T-Birds offense. All three players had over 50 points last season. Matthew Wedman, the hero of the 2016 Western Conference Championship, also returns and will add a lot of scoring punch to this year s team. Watch out for some rookies to have an impact this season, including forward Andrej Kukuca from the Czech Republic and defenseman Simon Kubicek from Slovakia, both taken in the Import Draft. Payton Mount on offense and Tyrel Bauer on defense will play their rookie season with the T-Birds. Mount was selected first and Bauer second by the team in the 2017 Bantam Draft. Also, returning this year is the T-Birds popular two-for-tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy two-forone tickets and beer along with $2 concession specials. If you are new to hockey, this is a great way to get the family involved on a budget. Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are also great games to check out, and you don t want to miss the second annual Weiner Dog Races and the Teddy Bear Toss this season. If you re new to accesso ShoWare Center, you should know we are incredibly proud of this 10-year-old state-of-the-art arena. With 6,125 seats, 20 suites and Heritage Club seating, the arena offers unsurpassed hockey sightlines throughout. While you re in town, you and your family can grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, urban shopping village with a variety of dining options for pre- and post-game gatherings. 64 Previous Three Playoffs Appearances The T-Birds lost a first round series 4-1 to the Everett Silvertips in the 2018 Playoffs. The T-Birds won the 2017 WHL Championship with a 4-2 series win over the Regina Pats with a 4-3 overtime win in Game 6. Hamaliuk, born October 30, 2000, was the T-Birds sixth round selection, 111th overall, in the 2015 Bantam Draft. Hamaliuk has 11 goals and 15 assists for 26 points in 31 games this season. Last season Hamaliuk played in 72 games and had 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points. Wedman First In Scoring Matthew Wedman was the T-Birds leading scorer in the regular season. He had 40 goals and 37 assists for 77 points in 66 games. He is the first T-Bird to hit 40 goals since Prab Rai had 41 goals in the season. Wedman had 29 goals and 17 assists in the last 32 regular season games. In 255 career games with the T-Birds he has 67 goals and 90 assists for 157 points. In 47 career playoff games Wedman has five goals and 10 assists for 15 points. Nolan Volcan Hits 300 Games Played Team captain Nolan Volcan played in his 300 th career game Tuesday, January 8 in Saskatoon. Volcan is in his fifth season with the T-Birds and has played in 321 career games with 100 goals and 131 assists for 231 points. Volcan has 20 goals and 10 assists in the last 28 regular season games he has played and finished third on team in scoring with 57 points on 27 goals and 30 assists. In 51 career playoff games Volcan has nine 10 and 14 assists for 24 points. Ross Rockin It Goalie Roddy Ross played in 25 games in the regular season and had a record with a.919 save percentage and a 2.76 goals against average. Ross was seventh in the WHL in save percentage this season and 11 th in the WHL in goals against average. Ross made his T-Birds debut on January 4 in Brandon in relief of Cole Schwebius and started his first game on January 6 at Regina. The T-Birds defeated the Pat 6-3 in his debut. Ross signed with the team on January Championship Team Members Nolan Volcan, Jarret Tyszka and Matthew Wedman all played in the 2017 WHL Championship series. Tyler Carpendale and Jake Lee were with the team on the playoff run to the 2017 WHL Championship. Lee played in two playoffs games, Game 5 and Game 6 against Kelowna in the Western Conference Championship. Carpendale has not played in a WHL playoff game. Kai Uchacz On Playoff Roster Center Kai Uchacz was called up by the T-Birds in March and will remain with the team for the rest of the playoffs. Uchacz, from De Winton, Alberta, was the T-Birds first round selection, 10 th overall, in the 2018 Bantam Draft. Uchacz has played five games with the T-Birds this season and has a goal and an assist. Uchacz scored his first career goal on March 17 at Portland. Uchacz had the T-Birds second goal in a 6-5 win over Portland. Uchacz s season with the Okotoks Oilers in the AMHL has ended. He had 16 goals and 15 assists for 31 points in 28 games. Uchacz signed a standard WHL Player Agreement with the team on August 20, Luke Bateman On Playoff Roster Defenseman Luke Bateman has joined the T-Birds for the playoffs. Bateman has played four games this season with the T-Birds but has not registered a point. Bateman was the T-Birds fourth round selection, 91 st overall, in the 2017 Bantam Draft. Bateman s season with the Thompson Blazers in the BCMML has ended. He had eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points with 124 penalty minutes. Bateman signed a standard WHL Player Agreement with the team on June 15, 2017.
