3 WELCOME TO THE WHL SEASON FROM WHL COMMISSIONER Calgary, Alta. Another Western Hockey League season has arrived and we are excited to unveil the latest edition of the world s premier junior hockey players as they take to the ice with our 22 WHL Clubs throughout Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. As we embark on our 53rd WHL season, the WHL Player Experience continues to be the top priority for our WHL member Clubs. Our Clubs are committed to providing our players with the highest standard of development, both on and off the ice. The WHL takes great pride in offering world-class coaching and North America s most comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program, along with an extensive series of support services which ensures our players continue their development in a safe and positive environment. Ron Robison Commissioner Establishing a new record with 382 post-secondary scholarships awarded to WHL graduates this past season, the WHL Scholarship continues to pave a road to an unmatched educational opportunity for WHL alumni as they pursue their academic goals. Of the 382 WHL graduates who accessed their WHL Scholarship, 183 continued their hockey development by playing Canadian University hockey at the U SPORTS level this past season. The WHL season will feature many special events. With the 2019 NHL Draft set for Vancouver in June, we are excited for the opportunity to showcase what we believe will be one of the strongest NHL Draft classes in WHL history. Not only will these players be on display nightly in WHL markets, fans will have the opportunity to see these standards in Red Deer a hub for WHL activity in 2019 at the Sherwin Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in January. Once again, Red Deer will host the WHL Awards and WHL Bantam Draft in May. Meanwhile, Kamloops and Vancouver will host the 2018 CIBC Canada Russia Series in November, as Team WHL takes on the Russian National Team in a preview of the 2019 World Junior Championship. Through the support of major junior hockey s best fans, our corporate partners, broadcasters and media the WHL is in a position to provide our players with a world-class experience. Your passion and loyalty to the WHL and our 22 member Clubs is greatly appreciated. The WHL season promises to be exciting as our Clubs battle for a playoff berth and opportunity to capture the Ed Chynoweth Cup. I trust you will once again love cheering on your favourite WHL Club with an incredible group of top prospects on full display as they pursue their dreams, both on and off the ice.

8 Welcome to Kent and to the Seattle Thunderbirds season! We are thrilled to have you and your family join us for another exciting season with the Seattle Thunderbirds. The year s home opener will be at accesso ShoWare Center on Saturday, September 22 as the T-Birds start their bid to return to the WHL Finals for the third time in four seasons. This will be an exciting season under the direction of head coach Matt O Dette, now in his second season. There will be several new faces this year, but also many key returners. Jarret Tyszka and Reece Harsch will anchor the blue line for the T-Birds this season. Tyszka was recently at Montreal Canadiens Development Camp while Harsch was at the Las Vegas Golden Knights Development Camp. Nolan Volcan, Zack Andrusiak and Noah Philp return to the lead the T-Birds offense. All three players had over 50 points last season. Matthew Wedman, the hero of the 2016 Western Conference Championship, also returns and will add a lot of scoring punch to this year s team. Watch out for some rookies to have an impact this season, including forward Andrej Kukuca from the Czech Republic and defenseman Simon Kubicek from Slovakia, both taken in the Import Draft. Payton Mount on offense and Tyrel Bauer on defense will play their rookie season with the T-Birds. Mount was selected first and Bauer second by the team in the 2017 Bantam Draft. Also, returning this year is the T-Birds popular two-for-tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy two-forone tickets and beer along with $2 concession specials. If you are new to hockey, this is a great way to get the family involved on a budget. Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are also great games to check out, and you don t want to miss the second annual Weiner Dog Races and the Teddy Bear Toss this season. If you re new to accesso ShoWare Center, you should know we are incredibly proud of this 10-year-old state-of-the-art arena. With 6,125 seats, 20 suites and Heritage Club seating, the arena offers unsurpassed hockey sightlines throughout. While you re in town, you and your family can grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, urban shopping village with a variety of dining options for pre- and post-game gatherings. You will also enjoy the charm of historic downtown Kent, where you ll find more entertainment and dining choices. No matter what you choose, you ll have even more reasons to come back to Kent. Go Birds! Dana Ralph Mayor, City of Kent

38 PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS HOCKEY PORTLAND vs. SEATTLE September 22, :05 p.m. ShoWare Center NHL RECOGNITION The Portland Winterhawks led all Western Hockey League clubs with ten rostered players attending NHL Prospect Camps this fall. Of the ten, it includes First round NHL Draft picks Cody Glass (Vegas Golden Knights), Kieffer Bellows (New York Islanders), Dennis Cholowski (Detroit Red Wings) and Henri Jokiharju (Chicago Blackhawks) TALE OF THE TAPE REGULAR SEASON SERIES SEATTLE PORTLAND The WHL saw 117 total players represented in the prospect camp rosters. All 22 teams had at least one player attend. Everyone invited to camp is eligible to play in the league for the season. Rounding out the U.S. Division was the Everett Silvertips (7), Spokane Chiefs (7), Tri-City Americans (7), and the Seattle Thunderbirds (3). BLICH IN THE RADAR After spending training camp in San Jose with the Sharks organization, the NHL club opted to reassign forward Joachim Blichfeld to the Winterhawks. The 20-year-old Danish forward was drafted by the Sharks in the 7th round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. He scored 24 goals and 56 points in 56 games last season and was named a top three player on his World Junior Championship Under 20 team, registering four goals and three assists in nine international games for Denmark. With the addition of Blichfeld to the opening day roster, the Winterhawks are now carrying four 20 year olds and three import players. By October 10, teams must be at three overagers on roster and two import spots. KOLLECTING CONFIDENCE Veteran forward Ty Kolle paced all Winterhawk skaters during the preseason in goals (3), assists (4), and points (7). Last season, Kolle had just seven goals and seven assists in 60 games. Teammates Jaydon Dureau (goals) and Cross Hanas (asssits) tied with Kolle for the team lead in their respective categories. This is the second straight season Kolle averaged at a point-per-game pace in the preseason. Now the native of Kamloops is looking to take an elevated role entering the season. REPLACING THE BACKEND With goaltender Cole Kohler graduating to the pro ranks, former captain Keoni Texeira wrapping up his 409 game Winterhawk career, and Henri Jokiharju and Dennis Cholowski both skating with their NHL teams, there were some noticeable holes to fill this offseason. The Hawks allowed the third fewest goals in the Western Hockey League during the campaign. Mike Johnston made a splash in early May aquiring WHL veteran and defenseman Jared Freadrich from the Victoria Royals. Having played three WHL seasons with three different teams, Freadrich is looking forward to calling Portland home for his final year of eligibility. The Camrose, Alberta native is four games shy of 200 career WHL regular season games. He s certainly a weapon in the offensive zone considering he finished fourth in the league among defensemen in power play goals (9) and led all Winterhawks defensemen in shots on goal during the preseason. From the goaltending perspective, there was a battle between Dante Giannuzzi and Evan Fradette for the spot next to Shane Farkas. Giannuzzi made an immediate impact during preseason play, stopping 46 of 50 shots in just over 90 minutes of game time. His future in the WHL is bright and he just turned 16 on September 3rd of this year. HAY, DON HAY, WHADDUYA SAY With former Assistant Coach Danny Flynn advancing to the NHL ranks to be the Columbus Blue Jackets Eastern Amateur Scout, the Winterhawks had an immediate opening on the bench. They wasted no time in hiring CHL legend Don Hay, the winningest head coach in Western Hockey League history. He has won three Memorial Cups, two WHL Coach of the Year awards, a World Junior championship and been the head coach of the NHL Calgary Flames and Phoenix Coyotes. Hay and Kamloops parted ways this offseason and he didn t miss the opportunity to work with his long time friend, Mike Johnston, and continue to develop young talent. Told NBC a few weeks ago that it will be a changing of the guard in Portland with a younger roster compared to previous years. PRESEASON REWIND Finished with an overall record of 2-2-1, having not played since September 8th against Kootenay. The Winterhawks suffered a 4-3 overtime loss in the game, but earned a point by scoring a shorthanded goal with 49 seconds to play in the third period. The previous game was the 11-8 final.
