SPOTLIGHT ON BLAKE PIETILA Height: 6-0 Weight: 195 NHL: NJD ( 12, 5th rd., 129th) Current Team: Michigan Tech University Hometown: Brighton, Mich. (suburb of Detroit) On the grind line nickname: It was a group decision. Two years ago Cole Bardreau and I played with Zac Larraza on the U.S. NTDP Under-18 Team and we had the grind line. It s now carried over here, except we ve added Ryan Hartman. I was a Red Wings fan growing up so it s from there too. On Bardreau s U.S. Player of the Game: It was a great effort from all three of us to get that plate. Hartman and I haven t decided what we re going to do with it yet, if we re going to cut it up or destroy the evidence. It s an honor to win a plate like that. All three of us went into getting that. It s not often that happens, but when it does it s nice and it compliments all three of us. On his hunting past time: The most interesting place I ve been is probably South Dakota. I went pheasant hunting and had some success. I went with about 10 of my family members during a Thanksgiving weekend. On his dad attending this tournament: It means a lot to me. It s about an eight and a half hour drive from home to Michigan Tech to see me and my brother, Chad, and he s probably only missed one home weekend this year. When I was with the U.S. NTDP he probably made all the trips oversees to Slovakia, Sweden, Germany and the Czech Republic. On the number of people in his family: To be honest I don t know how many first cousins I have. My dad has nine brothers and one sister. And my mom has one brother and four sisters. I must have 100 cousins between the two families and I do know them all. Hockey-wise, my cousin, Aaron, my brother and I have made it the farthest, but a lot have played hockey. We ve had some good family hockey games. On playing on a line with his brother at MTU: My mom likes it, but it didn t go well. On his last name pronunciation: It s Finnish. Lower Peninsula, we say puh- TILL-uh. Upper Peninsula, they call it PEEtill-uh. And pee-et-uh-luh gets in there too.

The U.S. went 4-for-9 vs. Slovakia and 5-for-13 against the Czech Republic. Of Team USA s 26 goals, 46% have come with a man-advantage. The U.S. leads the tournament in penalty killing at 91.3%, having allowed just two power-play goals over 23 chances. The U.S. had perfect penalty kill games against Germany, Canada and the Czech Republic, while allowing a single power-play goal to Russia and Slovakia. U.S. Medals at the WJC Year Medal Coach 2011 Bronze Keith Allain 2010 Gold Dean Blais 2007 Bronze Ron Rolston 2004 Gold Mike Eaves 1997 Silver Jeff Jackson 1992 Bronze Walt Kyle 1986 Bronze Dave Peterson LEANING LEFT LOOKS RIGHT Team USA s all-lefty line of John Gaudreau, J.T. Miller and Jim Vesey made its debut vs. Slovakia. The trio produced two goals, both by Gaudreau, and six assists. Vesey had an assist on three consecutive goals in the first period. Miller had a pair of helpers on the day and Gaudreau tacked on an assist as well. Their collective plus/minus rating on the day was +9. Gaudreau (3-0) and Miller (1-2) combined for six points against the Czechs, however, all points were recorded on the power play. PRODUCTIVE BLUE LINE Team USA s defense corps has contributed eight of the team s 26 goals, including 4-of-12 on the power play. Jacob Trouba has four goals, while Shayne Gostisbehere, Seth Jones, Jake McCabe and Mike Reilly have a goal apiece. The Czech Republic game marked the first game in which a defenseman did not score. The seven-man group also has 15 assists, including nine against the Czechs. Jacob Trouba s four goals tie John Carlson (2010) and Erik Johnson (2007) for the most single-tournament goals by a U.S. defenseman since at least the 2000 IIHF World Junior Championship. GRINDING OUT GOALS The Grind Line of Blake Pietila, Cole Bardreau and Ryan Hartman is the only U.S. line to have remained intact throughout the tournament. The defense-first trio notched its third goal and seventh and eighth points of the tournament in the win vs. the Czechs. Hartman scored Team USA s third goal on a feed from Bardreau. In five games, Hartman has two goals and an assist, Bardreau has a goal and two assists, and Pietila has two assists. Collectively, they have a plus/minus rating of +14. Bardreau and Pietila lead the team with +5 individual ratings. SHUTOUT SHOUTOUT By blanking Germany, 8-0, and Czech Republic, 7-0, Team USA notched two shutouts in a single tournament for the first time since the 2004 IIHF World Junior Championship. John Gibson and Jon Gillies shared the shutout of Germany, while Gibson played all 60 minutes against Czech Republic. In 2004, Al Montoya whitewashed Austria and Slovakia en route to a gold medal and the directorate award for top goaltender. CHASING THE RECORD BOOK John Gaudreau needs one more goal to crack the top 10 list for all-time U.S. single-tournament goal scorers. His sixth tally would create a 19-way tie for sixth place. Four players have reached the seven-goal plateau, while Jeremy Roenick owns the top spot with eight goals in Alex Galchenyuk and Seth Jones each have six assists, two shy of tying for eighth on the U.S. single-tournament assist chart. FACE-OFF FORTUNES Each of Team USA s four primary centers is succeeding at above 50% in the face-off circle. Cole Bardreau leads
