Brad Gushue Newfoundland and Labrador s (left to right) Mark Nichols, Geoff Walker and skip Brad Gushue acknowledge the crowd after another victory at the Tim Hortons Brier in St. John s. Letdown? No way! Gushue pumped to play in Worlds GRANT GRANGR Brad Gushue has experienced Olympic glory. But that was long ago. It was so long ago it came prior to the last appearance by the dmonton Oilers in the NHL playoffs. That would be in ver since then, and even before, he s been chasing another dream. That was to win the Brier the Tim Hortons Canadian men s curling championship. He tried. No doubt about it. Thirteen times the skip from St. John s, N.L., played in the Brier. Thirteen times his hopes were high. But 13 times he watched someone else hoist the cherished Tankard. The most agonizing might have been last year when Gushue lost the final to Alberta skip Kevin Koe. Until Just a few short weeks ago, as fate would have it, Gushue, third Mark Nichols, second Brett Gallant, lead Geoff Walker, alternate Tom Swallows and coach Jules Owchar got the glory Gushue had craved for so long when they won the Canadian title in his hometown. Celebration ensued. And boy did they celebrate. As they did came the realization that, oh, by the way, there s a little something called the 2017 Ford World Men s Curling Championship presented by Service xperts to go to, and it s just days away. Once the euphoria of achieving a more-thana-decade-held dream dissipates and the adrenalin evaporates, what frequently follows is a letdown. Looming large is the spectre of a new challenge so soon afterward becoming anticlimactic. In some minds, maybe. But not in Gushue s. I don t think there s a danger of that, said Gushue, who opens Saturday against Switzerland. There d be a bigger danger if we were going to a country where curling wasn t that big, where we had three or four hundred people in the stands. Going to dmonton, there it s a very big curling community. I think if we did go into it with any sort of a letdown, that s going to disappear pretty quick when we get into that atmosphere of playing in Northlands with the big crowd and the Maple Leaf on our back. This may be the first world championship for Gushue and his Newfie mates but it s not their first international rodeo. See CANADA OPPOSIT PAG

3 Tickets from $22.50 curling.ca/tickets Page 3 Canada FROM PAG 2 Our experience we ve had throughout our careers, and that goes back to world juniors Brett and Geoff have both been to world juniors and Mark and I back in 2001 (world juniors), and obviously the Olympics, and just being on tour, and being to the Briers, we ve played enough that nothing s going to shock us, said Gushue, who noted his team has played all the others teams that are here. We re not the typical first-time Brier champs. Nichols has been by Gushue s side in pursuit of the Brier dream for most of the journey. He even assumed skipping duties earlier this season while Gushue nursed a wonky hip back to health. This team has been through a lot together the last two or three seasons, said Nichols. We ve worked really hard to position ourselves to be in this spot right now, and I think the week-in and week-out the way we ve been playing, we ve been in two Brier finals and in the playoffs in another, those are the biggest events in the world. We re going to treat this just like the past Brier and not take anything for granted and just play our game and let everyone else come after us. Making the Canadian fans happy, and himself as well, by winning the worlds would compare favourably to his Olympic victory in Italy. It would be right up there, to be honest, Gushue said. Just where I am at personally in my career it would mean a whole lot to me and everything that s happened to me over the last 11 years, in particular over probably the last year and a half, it would be right up there for sure. Canadian third Mark Nichols. Hey, aren t you...? Canadian skip Brad Gushue s status as a rock star on The Rock reached new heights after his team s victory at the Brier. From my perspective it brought back a lot of memories for me after we won the Olympics, said the Newfoundland native who skipped Canada to a gold medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. For me going around town, I don t want to say was a challenge, but I ve got to allow a bit more time if I go to a restaurant or a grocery store or anywhere in public just because people recognize us and they want to come up and congratulate us. It s awesome to see the interest in curling right now in the city of St. John s and the province of Newfoundland. Need help in a hurry? The Swedes became the first non-canadian men s crew to capture a Grand Slam title when they won the 2016 WFG Masters in Okotoks, Alta. in October. din spends the majority of the season playing in Canada, which can t hurt. 2. CANADA Brad Gushue Bally Haly Golf & C.C. / R/MAX Centre (St. John s) Skip: Brad Gushue Third: Mark Nichols Second: Brett Gallant Lead: Geoff Walker The skinny: The sentimental favourite at home, of course, but how much has this team got left in the tank? The Canadian champs won an emotional and gut-wrenching Tim Hortons Brier before their home fans in St. John s, then immediately left to play in a Grand Slam event in Nova Scotia. Now they are being asked to crank in up again. It is that too much to ask? 3. NORWAY Steffen Walstad Oppdal Curling Club (Oppdal) Skip: Steffen Walstad Third: Markus Høiberg Second: Magnus Nedregotten Lead: Alexander Lindström The skinny: Any team that can knock Thomas Ulsrud and his fancy pants out of the box is worthy of consideration, and Walstad s crew certainly is. Their appearance here is well deserved. Walstad played a heavy schedule this season on the World Curling Tour, and it paid off with a second-place finish at the Perth Masters and a victory at the German Masters. This is their first appearance at the Worlds, but that shouldn t be a bother. 4. SWITZRLAND Peter de Cruz Geneva Curling Club (Geneva) Skip (Throws 2nd): Peter de Cruz Vice -skip(throws 4th): Benoit Schwarz Third: Claudio Pätz Lead: Valentin Tanner The skinny: The Swiss women are a curling force, so how much longer until the men join them? Peter de Cruz may be the next great uropean team, and has already shown flashes of something special. This is a very consistent and level-headed team, with Schwarz throwing skip stones. They are coming off a great showing at the lite10, and they should make the playoffs in dmonton. DIN GUSHU WALSTAD De CRUZ

5 Tickets from $22.50 curling.ca/tickets Page 5... AND TH CHALLNGRS Don t overlook... SCOTLAND: David Murdoch battled through a tough Scottish field, which included Tom Brewster, to claim his spot in dmonton. Murdoch, a two-time world champ (2006, 2009), has a ton of experience which will serve him well in dmonton. If the Scots can get off to a good start, look out. USA: A very capable team. Shuster is still in his early 30s but it seems like he s been around forever. This will be his seventh appearance at the Worlds, and he is coming off a bronze-medal performance last year. He also won bronze at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, so he could surprise. Alexey Stukalskiy will pilot the Russian team in dmonton. JAPAN: Yusuke Morozumi had a breakthrough performance in his fifth Worlds with the same crew last year, finishing fourth, so don t take the Japanese lightly. They have been taught well on the mechanics of the game, and have plenty of experience. RUSSIA This used to be Andrey Drozdov s team, with Alexey Stukalskiy throwing the last stones, but Drozdov, who piloted Russia s team at the 2014 Olympics, is gone and Stukalskiy is the man in charge. They had a great showing at the 2016 uros, losing the bronze-medal to Switzerland. Look for the Russians to hold their own this week. Spoilers at best... CHINA: The Chinese team, skipped by Liu Rui, is from Harbin, dmonton s sister city, but it is unlikely to get a hospitable feeling on the ice. China failed to qualify for the Worlds last year, which tells a lot of where their program is right now. Canadian Marcel Rocque coaches the team. GRMANY Almost a complete makeover for Baumann s team from last year when he went German veteran Andy Kapp was recruited to help out, but has since left the team. The Germans would like to avoid the slow start they had at the uropean championship. NTHRLANDS This young Dutch team fought its way through the B-uros to nab the final uropean spot for this year s Worlds, beating Austria in the deciding game. This team has its sights locked on qualifying for the 2018 Olympics but will be in tough against a very experienced field in dmonton. The week should serve as a experience builder for them. ITALY: Joel Retornaz was a familiar face on the Tour this season, but failed to qualify in any event. Canadian Rodger Schmidt, who coached Russia s Anna Sidorova at last year s World women s championship, is in their corner. The intent this week will clearly be to learn from the experience. 6 Page Ford World Men s Curling Championship Y OPNR SATURDAY, APRIL 1, 2017 We ve beaten these teams before; we know how to do that. Peter de Cruz On de Cruz control Switzerland a serious contender By GRANT GRANGR ye Opener Associate ditor A sly smile and a twinkle in his eye instantly appears on Peter de Cruz s face as he precociously declares it s going to be easy for us when asked how his Swiss team stacks up against the rest of the field at the 2017 Ford World Men s Curling Championship presented by Service xperts. Within a nanosecond, though, he makes sure his questioner knows he was kidding. No, just joking, he says with a laugh. He may have been joking, but Switzerland is a serious contender. Of all the teams here de Cruz s has the third-highest world ranking behind Sweden s Niklas din and Canada s Brad Gushue. The Swiss squad has even defeated din in all three of their encounters this year. We ve beaten these teams before; we know how to play to do that. It s all going to be a matter of doing that at the right time, said de Cruz following the team s initial practice at Northlands Coliseum on Friday. His team came to Canada this season to play some big events, to play good teams, get used to arena ice, television and media. It was a really good preparation for us, said de Cruz. There isn t one team here that hasn t had experience and played at this level at some time. They ve all had a pretty good season. While de Cruz has gained some experience in Canada, din has a whole lot. And a whole lot of success, too. specially when it comes to the Ford Worlds when they re played in Canada. The 31-year-old won the last two held in our home and native land 2015 in Halifax and 2013 in Victoria. din also left Regina in 2011 with a bronze medal, as he did in 2012 when it was held in Basel, Switzerland. They ve been on a mission this season winning two grand slams early in the season, reaching the final in another and the semifinals in a fourth. If experience counts then Scotland s Murdoch this will be his seventh trip to the Ford Worlds as a skip has it bursting from his bagpipes, although it s been a while. His last appearance at the world championship was at Victoria in 2013 when Murdoch finished third. However, in each of his previous six times he has stood on the podium including on top in 2006 and Also making his seventh trip to the worlds, although not all as skip, is 34-year-old John Shuster of Superior, Wisc., who finished third at the 2016 Ford Worlds by defeating Japan s Yusuke Morozumi 8-6 in the bronze medal game. The Japanese team is making its fifth consecutive appearance at the Ford Worlds, with last year s finish of fourth the best result. Norway has always been a force in world curling, but this year that force will have a different face. World curling fans are used to seeing Thomas Ulsrud but he was ousted in Norway s qualification series by Steffen Walstad, who by all accounts is also a force to be reckoned with. Of the other teams, China, skipped by Rui Lui features a coach with a Canadian connection (former Martin lead Marcel Rocque), German skip Alexander Baumann has a former New Brunswicker and 2004 Canadian junior champion, Ryan Sherrard, at lead, while Italy (Joel Retornaz), Russia (Alexey Stukaskiy) and the Netherlands (Jaap van Dorp) look to make an impact. 11 Tickets from $22.50 curling.ca/tickets Page 11 HURRY HARD! Gushue s hip a non-issue Canadian skip ready to roll By GRANT GRANGR ye Opener Associate ditor Shooting from the hip has been a struggle for Brad Gushue lately. No, that s not a reference to the Canadian skip s interviews. He does just fine in those, thank you very much, without having to shoot from the hip. The trouble came when was in the hack. Gushue missed the first few months of the curling season because his hip was bothering him. With the help of a few fill-in recruits, most notably Charlie Thomas of Calgary, third Mark Nichols assumed the skipping duties and did very well. But Gushue returned in mid- December and since then he, Nichols, second Brett Gallant, lead Geoff Walker, alternate Tom Swallows and coach Jules Owchar have ridden his sharpshooting all the way to the 2017 Ford World Men s Curling Championship presented by Service xperts. At the Brier, it actually started off pretty rough for me but fortunately being here in St. John s we had our physio/massage people that gave me a lot of attention during the week, said Gushue earlier this week from his hometown where the Tim Hortons Canadian Men s Championship was held. It actually improved as the Brier went on, and to be honest it feels better than it did at the end of the Brier. I feel very confident going into the worlds it should be a non-issue. Fortunately for us we were able to convince them (the physio/message practitioners) to come with us for my sake and Geoff s sake. We re going to be well-taken care of. I don t think it s going to be a problem. Walker has been dealing with a shoulder injury in recent weeks and was replaced by Swallows for a Grand Slam event in Port Hawkesbury, N.S., held the week after the Brier. It feels really good. I was able to sweep the last three practices at 100 per cent with no pain so I m really happy with that and really optimistic for next week, said Walker. Gushue plans to spend the summer rehabbing his hip and groin. Right now it s just gotten to probably as good as it can get until I can get away from curling and actually strengthen it, Gushue said. It happened from curling and I don t think I m helping it. So all the work we re going to keep it where it is is all maintenance. So for us to get done the season, put a six- or eight-week stretch to strengthen it up it shouldn t be an issue going forward for the next few years. 7 CONVNINT LOCATIONS IN DMONTON, ST.
