5 2009 Outlook: It's All About The Dance H.S., and also played plenty of minutes at forward. Freshmen Marielle Elie (Dracut, MA) and Casey Schulze (Chelmsford, MA) will look for immediate minutes after stellar careers in which both were Merrimack Valley Conference all-stars, Elie three times over at Central Catholic H.S., and Schulze at Chelmsford H.S. Though the graduation of Grace Larsen and Margaret Gonsalves leave big holes to fi ll, the River Hawks won t be at a loss for creativity in the middle. Sophomore Maddy Bissaillon returns following a stellar freshman season in which she was named to the NE-10 Third Team and All- Freshman Team. Bissaillon chipped in two goals and three assists from the central midfi eld and will lineup alongside senior Jenna McIntosh, a junior college All-American as a sophomore at Monroe Community College, who will move forward from a defensive role last season. Also expected to return to the midfi eld is junior Ella Merullo, who solidifi ed her starting spot shortly into her freshman year. Several players will look to increase their minutes from last year, including sophomores Jackie Zani, who appeared in 12 matches (two starts); and Erin Fleury, who started six of 16 matches. Several freshmen will provide competition, namely freshmen Gia O Connor (Dracut, MA) and sophomore Kaitlynn Hurd (North Attleboro, MA), who transfers following one year at Assumption. O Connor won a plethora of honors in a four-year career at Central Catholic H.S. while Hurd played in 10 matches at Assumption (one start), after starting three years at North Attleboro H.S. Also fi guring in will be freshmen Jenna Junior Ella Merullo Costa (Attleboro, MA), Charlotte Jensen (Wilmington, MA) and Melissa Arn (North Andover, MA). Costa was a three-time all-league standout at Attleboro H.S. while Jensen and Arn earned multiple Cape Ann League all-star honors; Jensen at Wilmington H.S. and Arn at North Andover H.S. Where it gave up only 19 goals, UMass Lowell only scored 21, a fi gure that absolutely needs to increase if an NCAA Tournament bid is in the cards this season. We knew we needed a lot of people to step up and score goals last year, Monteiro noted. In that department, we have certainly upgraded. We ve got some young players who will need to gain experience, but I think that we will put more chances away. The River Hawks have plenty of experience returning up front in senior Kelly Soper and junior Brianne Bozzella, who combined for three goals and fi ve assists last year. Sophomore Kaitlyn McHugh also returns and looks to build on her two goals and two assists last year. Challenging for immediate minutes will be freshmen Keanna Santos (Lakeville, MA) and Colleen Soper (Auburn, MA), sister of senior Kelly. Santos scored in clusters both at Apponequet H.S. and Dartmouth H.S., while Soper was a Central Mass Conference allstar at St. Peter Marian H.S. Freshman Julia Donigian (Wakefi eld, MA), sister of former standout Laura ( ), joins following a stellar career at Wakefi eld H.S. where she was a two-time conference all-star.

6 Elie Monteiro enters his seventh year as head coach of the women's soccer team and has steadily brought the program into the upper echelon of the Northeast-10 Conference and East Region. The River Hawks (8-5-5 overall, in the NE-10 in 2008) enter the 2009 season with a large recruiting class of 12, ready to compete out of the gate. In 2008, UMass Lowell advanced to NE-10 Tournament Semifinal, its best showing in program history, after a 1-0 overtime upset over Merrimack. In 2007, UML went (NE ) with its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, in which the River Hawks suffered a 1-0 setback to Merrimack in the first round. The season followed a 2006 campaign which saw UML go ( NE-10) and come within a penalty shootout of displacing Franklin Pierce in the NCAA Tournament New England Region first round. In 2005, Monteiro guided the River Hawks to a clip (9-4-1 NE-10) and their firstever appearance in the NCAAs. He helped the Phantoms to a six-year clip of (.607), which included an appearance in the USL national semifinal in 1997 and the USL championship match in He was named to the USL All-Tournament Team both years. In 2001, Monteiro received his 'C' The Coaching Staff Head Coach Elie Monteiro Monteiro's Moments Year Record Notes NE-10 Tournament NCAA Tournament NCAA Tournament NCAA Tournament NE-10 Semifi nal Total (.444) coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF). He received his degree in sports management. Previously, Monteiro was a two-year player at Massasoit Community College where he earned All-New England Region honors as a senior and led the Warriors to the NJCAA Tournament semifinals. En route, Monteiro was named the defensive most valuable player of the New England Regional championship. Born in Dakar, Senegal, Monteiro was raised in Brockton, MA.
