2 PROSPECT REPORT NEWS AND NOTES PROSPECT REPORT: For the complete prospect report with updated stats and notes through games on March 6, please visit the Boston Bruins Media Website ( The latest Prospect Report video includes interviews with defenseman Matt Benning of the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Providence Bruins forward Craig Cunningham and can be found on PROVIDENCE REVIEW: The Providence Bruins have posted a record since February 20, and, most recently, are coming off of a 7-1 rout of the Portland Pirates at the Dunkin Donuts Center on March 3. Craig Cunningham tallied a hat trick in the game, while Justin Florek added two goals and two assists. The B s lost via a shootout twice during the stretch, once to Springfi eld and once to Norfolk. Ryan Spooner leads the Baby B s with 40 points (10 goals, 30 assists) and Jamie Tardif is Providence s top goal scorer with 26 that mark is good for fourth in the AHL. BENNING S FAMILY SUPPORT: Matt Benning, an 18-yearold defenseman from Edmonton, was selected by the Bruins in the sixth round of the 2012 NHL Draft. In his fi rst season with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL, Benning has racked up 19 points (7 goals, 12 assists), good for fourth among the team s defenseman. Benning, who comes from a hockey family (his father Brian gamesand his uncle Jim, also the Bruins assistant GM games- both played in the NHL, and his other uncle, Craig, and grandfather, Elmer, are both scouts in the league), says the adjustment to a new league was tough at the beginning, but he s getting more and more comfortable as the season goes. The six-foot, 218-pounder, who will play at Northeastern next season, says having so many of his family members to turn to is a great luxury. My dad played in the NHL for 10 years, my uncle for nine. And then, I have my uncle Craig, who scouts, and my grandpa also scouts, too. A lot of great hockey minds in my family. They ve helped me throughout the years to get me to where I am now. All I can do is thank them for the opportunities they gave me. IRONMAN CUNNINGHAM: In two seasons with the Providence Bruins, forward Craig Cunningham has never missed a game. The ironman is the only P-Bruin to skate in all 56 games this season, and the only P-B to appear in all 76 games in his fi rst AHL season in The B s 2010 fourth rounder was known for his durability during his junior career as well, throughout fi ve seasons with the Vancouver Giants (a half a season with the Portland Winterhawks), where he won the Memorial Cup in 2007, with current Bruin Milan Lucic as his captain. PROSPECTS HEATING UP SINCE LAST REPORT: P-Bruins defenseman Matt Bartkowski has distributed six assists since the last Prospect Report and is currently riding a four-game point streak. Forwards Justin Florek and Christian Hanson have also caught fi re, amassing seven and six points respectively in their last six games. Providence goaltender Niklas Svedberg has posted a 3-1 record and a 1.75 goals against average since the last report. Meanwhile, in juniors, Alexander Khokhlachev has accrued 11 points in his last six games, recording six goals and fi ve assists. Plymouth s Cody Payne has averaged a point per game in his last seven, netting fi ve goals and tacking on a pair of assists. Belleville net minder Malcolm Subban has won three of his last four starts, posting one shutout, a 2.00 goals against average, and a.941 save percentage. Finally, in the collegiate ranks, Harvard forward Alexander Fallstrom has contributed two goals and two assists in his last four games. Fellow Ivy Leaguer, Brian Ferlin of Cornell, has logged fi ve points in four games since the last report. CHL RANKINGS: The latest BMO CHL rankings, released on March 6, contained just one team with a Bruins prospect. The London Knights ( ), with Seth Griffith, climbed to No. 3 since the last report. The Bellville Bulls, with Malcolm Subban, are currently ranked at No. 7, up from No. 9. The Plymouth Whalers, featuring Cody Payne, sit at No. 10 after previously being unranked. STINGRAYS UPDATE: The Bruins ECHL affi liate, the South Carolina Stingrays, have registered a record over their last six games. Both Jared Knight (injury) and Tyler Randell (recalled to Providence) have not played for the Stingrays since the last Prospect Report. PROSPECT REPORT - 1 -

3 PROSPECT OUTLOOK with New England Hockey Journal s Kirk Luedeke As we approach spring, regular seasons are coming to a close in junior and the Boston Bruins continue to see development and progress from many of their players in the amateur ranks. Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) defenseman Matt Benning is having a fi ne year after being the 175th overall selection by the B s last June. The Northeastern recruit is the nephew of assistant GM Jim Benning and came out of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, where his Spruce Grove team was also called the Saints. Benning is an archetypal Bruins defender: good skater who brings a distinct, physical edge and can chip in with offense in key situations. Although he brings only average height (6-feet), the younger Benning is tenacious and an effective open ice hitter who will lower the boom on bigger opponents. He s willing to drop the gloves to stick up for teammates and has natural defensive instincts. Still raw, Benning has long-term potential as a diamond-in-the-rough prospect who will spend time in the NCAA and minors before he s ready for an NHL roster spot. Alexander Khokhlachev could indeed be coming soon to the Dunk (Dunkin Donuts Center) in Providence. His Windsor Spitfi res OHL club is currently on the outside looking in for the fi nal playoff spot in the Western Conference with less than two weeks remaining in the regular season. With Boston s 2011 second-round selection already signed by the team, he will likely join Providence on an ATO sometime after March 17 and fi nish the year in the AHL (and playoffs as Jamie Arniel did in 2009). Koko has been electric in Windsor since returning to North America, having added speed to his already dynamic offensive game. P-Bruins fans are in for a treat and a possible AHL target date of March 22nd for Koko. A pair of OHL power forwards in Anthony Camara and Cody Payne are enjoying career years in that league. Bear Cub snapshot: Craig Cunningham, LW Providence Bruins (AHL) BEAR CUB SNAPSHOT Fresh off his fi rst professional hat trick in a win over the Portland Pirates, Craig continues to bring the kind of unheralded threezone play for Providence that Boston forwards like Gregory Campbell and Craig Cunningham, LW, Providence Bruins Daniel Paille have made a hallmark of their success. Talent analysis: Cunningham, 22, is undersized at a listed 5-foot-9, but is solidly-built and naturally strong. Although not a blazing-fast skater, Cunningham is excellent on his edges and elusive, with quick directionchange ability in open ice. The 2010 fourth-rounder (97th overall) has a good stick and excels on the forecheck with his vision, anticipation and hustle. Although he lacks elite puck skills, he compensates with a fast release and the willingness to endure punishment in front of the net. An underrated passer who can thread the needle in traffi c. When Cunningham takes the puck down low, he s able to shake defenders in tight areas and work the play out front for quality scoring chances. Plays a clean, if not overly physical game. The winger s character and work ethic are second to none: the former captain of the Vancouver Giants is extremely well-liked and respected anywhere he goes. Outlook: Like most forwards in the Bruins system, Cunningham faces a tough challenge to crack an established veteran roster in Boston. As it stands, he ll have to continue to do the little things for Bruce Cassidy in Providence, but his overall two-way game is progressing nicely for its consistency and tenacity. There isn t a great deal of top-six NHL upside here with Cunningham, but he s one of the most versatile forwards on the B s depth chart. He ll be knocking on the door for a fourth-line look as early as next season, but the possibility also exists that like Nate Thompson, he may have to go to another organization to get an opportunity for quality playing time. Camara has not broken stride despite a couple of suspensions this season and has 33 goals and counting in 45 games after scoring a total of 30 in his fi rst three full OHL campaigns. In addition to the breakthrough scoring, Camara is a rugged, physical presence who goes hard to the net and excels in the greasy areas of the ice. The 81st overall pick in 2011 is justifying the offensive potential the B s saw in him two years ago, but he ll likely need seasoning before he s ready for a primetime role in Boston. Payne, a native Floridian, has nice size at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds and has topped the 20-goal plateau after scoring a total of six markers in the previous two seasons with Plymouth and Oshawa. A fi fth-round selection in 2012, Payne must return to the OHL in if he doesn t make the Boston roster out of camp, but his development is taking off as a physical but skilled winger. Like Camara this year, watch for Payne s OHL numbers to jump off the page assuming he stays healthy. As a veteran forward next year, he ll see a lot more ice time on the top-two lines in Plymouth. Speaking of fi fth-round picks, Seth Griffith has missed nearly a month of action with London of the OHL since suffering a broken hand. He just had his cast removed, but there is no timetable for his return to the ice, and it is possible that the Knights will keep him on the shelf until the last weekend of the season in preparation for the playoffs. The injury cost Griffi th a shot at the league scoring title, but it has still been a highly successful season for one of the CHL s top offensive performers. 4 PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT CRAIG CUNNINGHAM In two seasons with the Providence Bruins, forward Craig Cunningham has never missed a game. The left wing, who has focused on upping his battle level since being drafted, may attribute the streak to luck, but his durability is certainly a key factor for Providence moving forward. Obviously, I ve been lucky so far. A lot about staying healthy and being able to play every night is about what you do in the summers, and what you do away from the rink, and the way we warmup, said Cunnnigham, on his ironman status. I try to play hard in all the dirty areas. I ve been lucky, very lucky not to have any nagging injuries or big time injuries. Hopefully, I can keep that streak alive. Giving himself the opportunity to dress in every game, Cunningham has put up steady offensive numbers through his fi rst two seasons in Providence, recording 36 points in off 20 goals and 16 assists in 76 games. Through 20 less games this season, the Trail, British Columbia native has already put up 17 goals and 12 assists for 29 points. The scoring didn t come as easy in the beginning of the campaign for Cunningham, but his fi rst professional hat trick on Sunday in a 7-1 rout of the Portland Pirates, may give he and his P-Bruins a little extra confi dence, especially as they sit atop the Atlantic Division with 71 points. It was exciting, said Cunningham. I think our team has been playing real well lately. I think when everyone around is playing so well, guys are starting to get breaks around the net. Sunday was lucky enough to be my night. Craig may have gotten off to a bit of a slow start as far as goal scoring because he was nursing an early injury, said Bruins Assitant General Manager Don Sweeney. However, he is a very diligent, hard working player that plays through pain and is consistently willing to go to the dirty areas of the ice. He has a great release on his shot and his efforts have been rewarded as he now has 17 goals on the season. We are extremely please with Craig s development as a two-way player, added Sweeney. He has the versatility to play both center and wing and he compliments any linemates because he is both responsible and a scoring threat. But Cunningham isn t always relied upon as the P-Bruins steady scorer, as the collective team effort - similar to the system in Boston - is what has bred success for Providence. I kind of slide in a secondary role, said the winger, on his contributions to the B s pipeline. I think we have our high end skill guys, then we ve got a lot of support troops on our team. Everyone s been playing their role, and that s why we ve been successful, he added, sounding a lot like the players in the big club s dressing room. LEFT WING LBS. SHOOTS RIGHT Current Team: Providence Bruins Birth Date: Sept. 13, 1990 (age 22) Hometown: Trail, British Columbia STATISTICS (Providence Bruins-AHL) GP G A PTS PIM Since being drafted by the Bruins 97th overall in 2010, after not being selected in his fi rst draft-eligible year in 2009, the 5-foot-10 winger has been working with the B s staff to improve his game. I think the biggest thing for me, personally, is being able to win battles and playing against big, strong defenseman, he said, on what he s been working on. I m not the biggest guy. I think playing with the pace, sometimes when I m not slowing the game down or I m not playing quick, I play slower and it s not successful for me. Those are the two biggest things, and I m trying to focus on those things this year. When they tell you to do something, you do it, and it works. And for Cunningham, having the access in Boston and Providence to take his game to another level has been quite the ride for the 22-year-old. They re an Original Six team. They re one of the most highly respected teams currently in the NHL. You kind of just watch the way they play and the mentality, he said. The guys that they have on their team, it s all about defense-fi rst, team-fi rst mentality. I think this year it s really rubbed off on us down here. You watch the success that they have and we kind of play the same system. Seeing the trickle-down effect from Boston, down I-95, Cunningham is determined to help take the P-B s back to the Calder Cup Playoffs for the fi rst time since Last year, we were learning a little bit, trying to fi gure out their system. I think this year we ve done a good job. I think if it works at the NHL level, it should work down here. A lot of guys like Bergeron and Chara, you just watch the way they compete every night. It s nice to see and be able to follow up on. Craig is still working on his fi rst step acceleration and overall strength to win battles along the walls and recover pucks on the forecheck, said Sweeney. He has made a nice overall progression and has certainly worked himself into consideration for call up and depth duty at the NHL level. --Caryn Switaj, BostonBruins.com PROSPECT REPORT - 3 -

5 AMATEUR SPOTLIGHT MATT BENNING Matt Benning is carrying on a tradition. He is just the latest member of his hockey-centric family to begin a journey that he hopes will one day take him to the NHL, where his father and uncle combined to play over 1,000 games. Benning s father, Brian, played 10 years and 568 games for fi ve different teams in the NHL, while his uncle Jim, now the Assistant General Manager of the Boston Bruins, played nine seasons in the NHL, racking up 605 career games for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks. Not to mention, Benning s uncle Craig (Buffalo Sabres) and grandfather, Elmer (Montreal Canadiens), are both scouts in the league. Matt Benning, when he was drafted by the Bruins in the sixth round of the 2012 draft, launched his voyage that maybe, one day, will allow him to join the rest of his family in the NHL. Obviously, it was an honor, especially after them winning the Stanley Cup, said Benning, an 18-year-old defenseman, of getting drafted by Boston. When they drafted me I was very happy, very excited. Having my uncle close, my family close, it helps, too. Benning, who has notched 19 points for the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL (including a goal and two assists since the last Prospect Report) this season, says having his family at his disposal for any kind of hockey advice is invaluable. They ve been through those kind of situations, Benning said of being able to go to them for guidance. But, yeah, if I have any questions we re really close, so I try to ask my father, or my grandpa, even my uncle. It s nice to know that you can have some insight from someone so close. After attending the Bruins Development Camp over the summer, Benning was able to begin to understand some of the areas of his game that needed work. The one thing that stood out to him, and the Bruins, was that he had to get stronger. Strength and conditioning for sure, Benning, a native of Edmonton, said bluntly, when asked what he needed to improve. After the development camp, that was one of the things that I needed to get better at. I knew I had to work on that. Obviously, I need to keep on working on everything in my game to get better. I think the USHL has helped me a lot to accomplish some of those goals that I wanted to meet. I think my skating has gotten a lot better, just trying to keep up with my teammates in practice and in games. I think that s really helped my speed. Benning, in his fi rst year with the Fighting Saints of the USHL, says getting acclimated to a new league was tough at fi rst, but he is getting more and more comfortable as the season goes on. It s been a pretty big adjustment, said the six-foot, 218-pound D-man. Coming from a different league last year [the Alberta Junior Hockey League], the USHL has a lot of prospects, obviously, and a lot of great hockey players. It s a fast league and it took me a little while to adjust, but I think I m doing well right now. DEFENSEMAN LBS. SHOOTS LEFT Current Team: Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) Birth Date: May 25, 1994 (age 18) Hometown: Edmonton, Alberta STATISTICS GP G A PTS PIM The Fighting Saints (37-9-4) lead the USHL s East Division by 14 points and Benning, who is fourth among Dubuque s defenseman with 19 points, is hoping to fi nish off the season right and build some momentum for when he heads to Northeastern University next fall. I m real excited to fi nish off the year, said Benning, who is also a plus- 20. Our team is doing well, and hopefully it can continue on through the playoffs. Hopefully get as far as I can, the Clark Cup is something that we want to win. For next year, just [want to] keep on getting better. I m real excited to go to Northeastern. It s close to the Bruins organization which will be nice, and, hopefully, [I] have a good year there. Northeastern is just a few minutes down the Green Line from TD Garden, allowing Benning to remain close to the Bruins organization while playing for the Huskies. I don t know if it was a part of me committing there, he acknowledged. I really liked it there, I felt a part of the team when I went. Obviously, it s nice to have the Bruins right there to keep an eye on me, so they were all for it. Being in Boston will also mean that Benning s uncle Jim will be around if he ever needs some advice. It s huge, Benning said of his uncle being close. Sometimes players are too scared to go and ask or they don t know who to ask what they need to do to get better or stuff like that. It s a real advantage for me because my uncle s so close there. I m really fortunate for that. ---Eric Russo, BostonBruins.com I ve learned so much from my coaching staff, other good players in the league, other players on my team. I m really happy.
