2 PROSPECT REPORT NEWS AND NOTES PROSPECT REPORT: The Boston Bruins Prospect Report has returned for the season. The semi-monthly report contains statistical and noteworthy updates on all prospects in the Bruins organization. The second edition of the report, released on Wednesday, October 31, includes upcoming games, along with the following features: -Prospect Outlook with New England Hockey Journal s Kirk Luedeke -Professional Spotlight: Niklas Svedberg -Amateur Spotlight: Cody Payne For the complete prospect report with player capsules containing updated statistics and notes through games on October 30th, please visit the Boston Bruins Media Website ( TALENT ANALYSIS: In each semi-monthly prospect report, New England Hockey Journal s Kirk Luedeke will highlight the outlook and talent analysis of prospects within the Boston Bruins organization, in addition to providing a Bear Cub Snapshot of one Black & Gold prospect. PROSPECT REPORT ON BOSTONBRUINSTV: The Boston Bruins Prospect Report will now feature a video component to go along with the published report. This week, Assistant General Manager Don Sweeney provides insight on the development of Providence Bruins goaltender Niklas Svedberg and Plymouth Whalers (OHL) forward Cody Payne. To view the video, head to ADJUSTING TO NORTH AMERICA: P-Bruins netminder Niklas Svedberg is adjusting to the North American game from playing in the Swedish Elite League. A feature on his adjustment can be found in this edition of the prospect report. Yeah, I mean, the biggest difference for me that I ve noticed is the smaller space behind the net, and the end zones, which we don t have back home, Svedberg told bostonbruinstv on his progress with the new ice surface. We play the puck much more here so I ll be working a lot on that, my stick technique. Belleville Bulls goaltender Malcolm Subban recently backstopped his club to his first shutout of the season. BRINGING THE PAYNE: In his third OHL season, Cody Payne is not only bringing his physicality, but an increased offensive output from playing on Plymouth s top line. A feature on his work ethic and mindset through the start of the season can be found in this edition of the report. I ve defi nitely been working on my shot a lot in practice, and a lot on my hands, Payne told BostonBruins.com. It also has a lot to do with the confi dence, and playing a bigger role on the team this year. All that combined, it s creating a lot more offensive output. SUBBAN SHUTS THE DOOR: Belleville Bulls netminder and B s 2012 fi rst-round pick (24th overall) Malcolm Subban recorded 31 saves in his fi rst shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over the Kingston Frontenacs on October 27. FIRST FOR CARON: Providence Bruins forward Jordan Caron recently netted his fi rst career professional hat trick in a 4-3 win over the Manchester Monarchs on October 19, which included two power-play goals. 3 PROSPECT OUTLOOK with New England Hockey Journal s Kirk Luedeke The Boston Bruins have seen impressive production from their prospects in the major junior ranks, but the same has not been true in the AHL yet, as the Providence Bruins have stumbled out of the gate with a 2-4 record to begin the campaign. Max Sauve is Providence s top scorer in the early going, and now in his third pro season, needs to answer questions about his durability and stay off the IR. The 22-year-old has played just 90 AHL games in the two seasons prior to this one, but brings nice height at 6-foot-2, speed and quick hands to the mix. The 2008 second-round selection is one of the most naturally gifted scoring forwards in the system, and although he s had some tough luck with injuries (he lasted just one shift in his NHL debut last year), the time is right for a breakout performance that could earn him league-wide recognition fi rst-rounder Jordan Caron potted his fi rst professional hat trick recently, and has demonstrated his patented sublime release and heavy shot during the young season. When the Bruins drafted Caron out of the Rimouski Oceanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Sayabec, QC native was a young power forward who dropped to Boston at 25th overall because of concerns about his skating and overall offensive upside. He has shown fl ashes of being an effective NHL player, and his current club depends on him to be a consistent scorer who uses his 6-foot-2 frame effectively along the walls and in front of the net. With more than 70 games in the big show, he is Providence s most experienced young forward second-rounder Jared Knight (32nd overall) is battling a hamstring injury and missed Providence s last four games. The Michigander and former London Knights star is day-to-day and expected back soon after going scoreless in the fi rst two contests seeing fourth-line duty. Providence s offensive struggles are borne out by the defensive statistics thus far. The blue line corps has accounted for just one goal in six games (scored by Garnet Exelby) and Head Coach Bruce Cassidy has implemented a rotating system on defense early on, with Colby Cohen, Matt Bartkowski, Zach Trotman and Ryan Button going in and out of the lineup on the lower pairing. Trotman (1), Exelby (1) and Button (even) are the only defenders not in the red for plus/minus, though it s still early. Watch for Boston s AHL affi liate to boost scoring as some of the more youthful elements on the club adjust to the demands and challenges of the pro schedule. BEAR CUB SNAPSHOT Niklas Svedberg, G, Providence Bruins Talent analysis: The undrafted free agent is showing Providence fans why he was a key component in a Swedish Elite League championship with Brynas IF last spring. At 6-foot-1, the 23-year-old Svedberg has above average size and good quickness. Active in his crease with the ability to get side-to-side rapidly, Svedberg is an aggressive, challenging netminder who stays square to the shooter and has big-game ability. With an exaggerated lower crouch, he can be susceptible to giving up the high shots, but he has extremely quick pads and recovers well for secondary scoring chances. Svedberg will come out of the net to move the puck, which can lead to unforced turnovers. An emotional player, he needs to be careful about being too physical against offending players too near his crease so as not to get his club into penalty trouble. Outlook: A late-bloomer who is still developing, Svedberg is adjusting to the smaller ice surface of North America, but effectively backstopped Providence to the fi rst two wins of the season. His fi ery temperament can work against him at times, but his competitive, battling style allows him to steal goals and keep his club in games where they are outplayed. Because he s an experienced pro goaltender coming out of Sweden s top league, he is capable of being a workhorse netminder in the AHL and is a prospect to watch this season as he gains experience in North America. The next edition will round out the Providence lineup while also going to the NCAA to check on Boston s collegiate prospects. Kirk Luedeke covers the Boston Bruins and NHL prospects for the New England Hockey Journal and is a contributing editor and hockey scout for the Red Line Report independent scouting service. 4 PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT NIKLAS SVEDBERG Providence Bruins goaltender Niklas Svedberg has earned both of his club s wins on the young campaign en route to a promising record, a 2.59 goals against average and a.915 save percentage. However, going into the season, P-Bruins Head Coach Bruce Cassidy admitted that he didn t know exactly what to expect from the young goaltender, signed by Boston as a free agent out of Stockholm, Sweden last May, who had never played in Canada or the United States. No one was really sure what we had, in terms of how he was going to play in North America, said Cassidy of the former Brynas backstop. We knew that he was a champion. What we ve seen out of him, he s very athletic, added the P-Bruins bench boss, and he s got a lot of battle in his game. He doesn t quit on anything. I saw that in practice. He was the last guy off the ice, and that can go a long way, especially [for] your teammates. They know if they make a mistake, he s back there and he s battling every minute for you. Battling every minute sounds like a description that Bruins fans would appreciate, especially in a goaltender, but beyond Cassidy s superlatives, Svedberg simply appreciated the opportunity to contribute to the organization so early in the season. First of all, it was nice to get two wins here, said Svedberg prior to last weekend s docket. It was a long time since I ve played a game so it felt pretty good. Current Team: Providence Bruins (AHL) Birth Date: Sept. 4, 1989 (age 23) Hometown: Sollentuna, Sweden STATISTICS GOAL LBS. CATCHES LEFT GP MIN W-L-O GA GAA SO SV% Like I said, I like his compete a lot, said Cassidy. Goalie Bob works with his technique, and there s some issues there that he s going to have to work on like every other young goaltender, but so far so good for him. And Svedberg hopes to improve even more as he acclimates himself to the AHL. Yeah, I mean, the biggest difference for me that I ve noticed is the smaller space behind the net, and the end zones, which we don t have back home, said Svedberg. We play the puck much more here so I ll be working a lot on that, my stick technique. There s a lot of traffi c here so you ve got to work your ways to see the puck and everything, but like I said earlier I try to play pretty much the same game as I ve been playing before and pick up some small details here from, especially from Bob who s helping us out. In the meantime, Svedberg is looking to pick up some W s for his club and in short order. Svedberg backstopped Brynas to its first SEL title since 1999 in There s some things to work on like rebounds and some of the goals I wasn t happy with. But I felt good out there and, even if it s a little bit different game, I feel I can play...pretty much the same game I ve been playing. I m feeling good so far, he added. You ve just got to keep working hard every practice. Some of those hard practices include tutoring from B s goaltending coach Bob Essensa, which Cassidy thinks will continue to help the 23-year-old netminder who got his fi rst taste of North American hockey during last summer s Boston Bruins Development Camp. It s always nice to get a good start when you come to a new place, he said. That s obviously a good feeling and most of all I m happy with the wins. That s all that matters at the end of the day. ---Evan Sporer, BostonBruins.com He s got a lot of battle in his game. He doesn t quit on anything PROSPECT REPORT - 3 -

5 AMATEUR SPOTLIGHT CODY PAYNE Cody Payne is in the middle of his third season of OHL action. Along the way, he s picked up some pointers, gotten some great advice, and learned some tricks about developing as a hockey player. One of those tricks, Payne said, is putting in hard work. So for the forward, who has shown an exponential rise in his offensive game this season, it just came down to putting in the time. I like to be the fi rst one on and the last one off, said Payne. It pays off, and I ve seen the dividends of that over the fi rst part of this season now. I know it s something that all my coaches throughout my life stressed to me, that the extra work always helps. And what jumps out about the start to Payne s 2012 OHL season has been his offensive numbers. He has scored eight goals and recorded fi ve assists in Plymouth s fi rst 14 games. In his fi rst two OHL seasons, over the span of 110 games, Payne tallied only six goals. For the Weston, FL native, that extra time has been spent working on his shot, as he has attempted to improve his offensive side of the game. I ve defi nitely been working on my shot a lot in practice, and a lot on my hands and stuff like that, Payne said. Working with my linemates throwing pucks on net, especially. And making sure that when I do put pucks on net, I go hard to the net and try to bury them. It also has a lot to do with the confi dence, and playing a bigger role on the team this year. All that combined, it s creating a lot more offensive output. But while it has been Payne s offense that has drawn attention toward him this year, it is his physical, team-fi rst style of play that got him noticed by the Boston Bruins brass when they selected Payne in the fi fth round (145th overall) of this past June s 2012 draft. Current Team: Plymouth Whalers (OHL) Birth Date: Jan. 14, 1994 (age 18) Hometown: Weston, FL RIGHT WING LBS. SHOOTS RIGHT His competitiveness and physicality also caught the attention of Providence Bruins Head Coach Bruce Cassidy during the B s summer Development Camp, who cited Payne as playing well in his fi rst go-round. For Payne, maintaining that level of physicality, and, as the Bruins would have it, hard to play against style, is something he sees as integral to his maturation. That was what made me really happy when I was drafted to Boston that it s a style of play that I can defi nitely relate to and that I defi nitely play, he said. I know the fans in Boston like hardworking players who fi nish their checks, and they defi nitely love fi ghts, so I thought it was right up my alley STATISTICS GP G A PTS PIM +/ It s really important for me to stay true to my game It s really important to me to stay true to my game and fi nish checks, and most importantly, standing up for teammates. For Payne, it s now a matter of putting all those parts together, and doing so consistently. Still, his hot start has contributed to an increased level of confi dence, something he said has gone a long way in sustaining his output. After the fi rst couple, you gain a lot of confi dence, and it starts going back to what you know, for me that s scoring goals since I was younger, Payne said. You get a lot more opportunity on the ice, and guys start expecting more so you get a little bit more time and space. You defi nitely have to take advantage of those opportunities. --Evan Sporer, BostonBruins.com PROSPECT REPORT - 4 -
