2 EDITORIAL EDITOR Kim Schramm Congratulations to the U15 Redbacks Team for winning the Queensland Junior Teams Championships. Congratulations also to the four players chosen to represent Queensland at the Australian Junior Championships in Sydney in September/October. Brody DiBella, Wes Dyer, Hayley Hankinson and BJ MacDonald will compete in the individual championship before doing their best to extend the Sharks winning streak from 12 National Team titles to hopefully, 13 wins in succession. Behind the scenes, August and September will be busy months as organisers prepare for the 1st Junior Qualifier for 2017 in Ingham, the Mackay Open and the Cairns International. This is issue number 48 and soon we will be celebrating 50 editions of the Redbacks Newsletter!!! That is a remarkable achievement in itself. Ask yourself how many other Squash Newsletters have survived that long. Now is a perfect time to contribute to the Redbacks Newsletter. 10 CONTRIBUTINGGUIDELINES 1 Firstly, anyone and everyone is welcome to make a contribution to the Redbacks Newsletter. You can be a player (junior/senior/master), a coach, a parent, a referee, a volunteer, a centre operator, an organiser, a photographer, a writer, etc. You do not have to be a polished writer. You only have to be a able to write an . It doesn t have to be a large composition. It could be just a few sentences. If you like writing then you can submit a more complete story. The main goal is to PROMOTE events, RECOGNISE people (players, coaches, referees, volunteers) and THANK (sponsors, volunteers). 2 Take a photo if you can. If you can t then don t let that stop you making a submission. A current photo is always better than one that was taken years ago. It doesn t have to be an action shot. It can be a photo of a presentation, a person in a more social setting, etc. The main requirement is that the photo is in focus. Please look to send the original photo file. When you a photo from your phone the software generally reduces the original shot down to a much smaller file size. These shots don t allow for cropping. So try and download the original shot off your phone onto a PC and send it that way. Where applicable it helps to send any logos as well. A logo helps a club or sponsor get instant recognition. 3 Once I receive your contribution I will begin the process of turning it into a complete story in the newsletter. I will send you a DRAFT to ensure you are happy with the final product. There is NEWS around you all the time. Many of you dismiss local news because you think nobody would be interested. In some cases that might be so but recognising a local player in the media can bring enormous benefits to the local club. It helps an individual to feel good about themselves and can inspire them to participate more, train for improvement, help others, etc. For others in the club it can inspire them to potentially do the same. When coaches and volunteers are publically appreciated they tend to respond positively. Sponsors also tend to keep supporting local clubs when their contribution is valued and recognised.

12 REDSTARAWARDS One or two NR players will be selected each month to receive either the REDSTAR Excellence Award or the REDSTAR Encouragement Award. To qualify for the excellence award a player must finish on the podium or be a recipient of an Award. To qualify for the encouragement award a player needs to show a level of improvement or a performance that pushes their opponent all the way. REDSTAR Excellence Award Summer Palmer Mackay s Summer Palmer received the NR Most Valuable Player Award for the QJC. She is an absolute pleasure to coach and has a fantastic attitude both off and on the court said Gillian Nielsen following the presentation. Palmer was a consistent performer throughout the Championship and just missed out on selection for the Queensland Sharks team. During the individuals Palmer won 6 of her 8 matches. In the teams she won 1 of 3 individual matches and 2 of 3 doubles matches with partner Dani Hankinson. CONGRATULATIONS
