1 Season 2018 May / June Newsletter Tas Sports Physio Junior Player Sponsorship 2018 Good Sports Award Club sponsor Tas Sports Physio has increased their sponsorship this season and have put together a Good Sports Award for players in the club s Girls and Boys U15 and U18 teams. Tas Sports Physio asked coaches of the Girls and Boys U15 and U18 teams to nominate one player from each team who demonstrate the qualities of a good sportsperson. These include but not limited to : 1. Someone who is respectful to coaches, umpires and fellow players 2. Encourages their teammates 3. Plays fair 4. Follows direction 5. Respects decisions made by umpires 6. Shakes hands with the opposition The players nominated are : Boys U18s Alex Hogan-Jones Boys U15s Tali Gee Girls U18s Jade Gluskie Girls U15s Bella Cox The decision of the winning player will be selected by the Canterbury Hockey Committee and announced after training on Tuesday the 26th of June at 6pm. The Good Sports Award includes the payment of the players 2018 Junior Canterbury subs. This is the first year in a sponsorship arrangement that the Canterbury and Tas Sports Physio hope to build as a future acknowledgment of U15 and U18 players over the coming years. This sponsorship helps build upon the club s goal of being a Respectful Club. Remember - Respectful Players (including coaches, parents, carers, supporters) lead to a Respectful Team which combined with the other Canterbury teams creates a Respectful Club. 3 June Long Weekend Regional Challenge Numerous Canterbury players, coaches and managers were recently involved in the Junior June Long Weekend Regional Challenge played at the Launceston Hockey Centre. This was the culmination of several weeks of trials and training leading up to the games in Launceston. A big thank you to all Canterbury members involved in this annual hockey festival. Special mention should be made to Kirsty Palmer who co-ordinates the entire weekend for the Southern Hockey League, and to Karen Brook and Ella Harman who co-ordinated our juniors for the trials and arranged for selectors for them. Thank you to those senior players who assisted at these selection trials. Males should also consider wearing a protective box just as in cricket. 6 Term 3 Stick2Hockey program (age 6-11) Canterbury s Term 2 Stick2Hockey program (age 6-11) kids have had a great term, with our 6 teams across three age groups promising a bright future for the club. Training sessions on Wednesdays were well attended, thanks to all coaches and volunteers for making it such a fun filled and successful roster. The 5 week Stick2Hockey program will resume July 26 - please see our website for further information and to register for term 3. Hockey Tasmania Annual General Meeting Hockey Tasmania is holding their AGM at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre Wednesday 27 th June at 6.00pm Social Happenings All players and supporters are invited to share news, ie awards, marriages, new babies, etc for the newsletter Would you like to assist in maintaining the club s social media and website. 12 A pool men report season 2018 so far.. Our A pool men have made a positive start to the season. For the first time in many years, the boys find themselves inside the top 4 in both PL and First grade at the halfway point of the season. Under the leadership of new coach David (Frog) Budgeon and Glenn (Cocky) Lucas, and the co captaincy of Sam (Smac) McCulloch and Simon (Spud) O'Conor, the boys have begun developing a disciplined and structured game style which is beginning to pay dividends on the score sheet. New players coming into the group have added fresh impetus to our push for finals action. Centre Half Brenton Watson joined us from Victoria several weeks ago. He has added considerable skill and composure to our already strong midfield and has a pleasing ability to bob up and score high quality goals. James Sexton, formerly of South Launceston, has added great energy in the front half, along with Craig Donovan. The other positive has been the rapid development of many of our younger players. Alex Hogan Jones has cemented a starting spot in the Premier League team, despite only being 16. Miles Mctaggart (16) Vin Harman (15) and Tom Rasmussen(14) have all had chances at the top level and will continue to improve and put pressure on older players for their spot. In the 1st grade team, a similar setup has allowed a smooth transition for players moving up to the top level. We continue to introduce quality young players to the senior setup. Lachie Rogers and Luke Palmer (both still U14) have been exposed to senior hockey for the first time. Watch out for these lads to make a splash in a year or two! This week's game against Uni is an opportunity for teams in both senior grades to put some space between themselves and the teams in 5th spot, setting us up nicely for the run into the last round. If you haven't watched senior hockey before, get along and support the red men and women. They set a great example for our juniors and would love some vocal support.
