ISSUE 76 - December 2018 Q Squash Northern Region Congratulations Michael Lawrence! You are the RedStar Northern Region Player of the Year for What I love about the RedStar Awards is the very fact that who wins is based purely on their overall performance. In other words, Michael Lawrence is solely responsible for this achievement. Well done Michael! Michael s main rival in NR is Liam Fascetti from Ingham. Liam clearly won the RedStar Encouragement Award. Congratulations Liam. Congratulations to the Cairns Squash Club on securing a Platinum Sponsor (Smithfield Dental) and two Gold Sponsors (Allied Auto Online and WGC Lawyers) for the 2019 season. The Q Squash rankings due on 1st December 2018 have not been finalised in time for this publication. I would like to wish everyone in NR a very Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. Please stay safe! 3 PRESIDENT S President s Court COURT By Dean Morzone I lament how the year has flown by as I write for the last time in 2018, but looking toward 2019 with great optimism and excitement. TOURNAMENTS Get ready for the balance of the Northern Region tournament series: Cairns: compulsory qualifier February 2019 Sportsworld 268 Gatton Street Westcourt, Cairns. sportsworldcairns.com Townsville: qualifier March 2019 Dalrymple Squash Centre 330 Bayswater Rd, Garbutt QLD 4814 dalrymplesquashcentre.com.au Mackay: compulsory qualifier 4-5 May 2019 Mackay Leisure Centre 95 Broadsound Rd, Paget QLD 4740 mackayleisurecentre.com.au Cairns has announced Smithfield Dental as the platinum naming rights sponsor for the aptly named Smithfield Dental Cairns Junior Squash Championships from February Learn more at ( Smithfield-Dental-Cairns-Junior-Squash-Championships) Q Squash Northern Region Inc, in partnership with Dominos Ingham and Manunda, respectively hosted Dominos Pizza dinners at the Ingham Junior Championships and the PSA Cairns International. Our relationship with Domino s is going from strength to strength. Please acknowledge their support next time you order. COMMITTEE The AGM will also be held on the Cairns Tournament weekend February Please consider whether you would like to serve on the committee or sub-committees and thereby strengthen our support for players, clubs and centres. The AGM is an ideal forum to consider amendments to the By-Laws, reflect on the new State Ranking policy, explore ways to promote affiliation to increase our squash community, and brainstorm ideas to better support centres and Clubs with marketing & promotion; competition & tournaments, and Junior development & participation. CLUBS & CENTRES In the last newsletter, I mentioned some great business tools and initiatives, which will interest innovative clubs and centres. These are worth talking about again.

PRESIDENT S President s Court COURT By Dean Morzone SportyHQ is now bigger and better than ever. Clubs & centre operators can create an integrated website & online booking for players, member tracking, promotional mail out capacity, fixture & tournament draws tools, and automatic WiFi feeds for electronic scoring & recording, and much more. To learn more about these SportyHQ business products, contact SportyHQ - Henry Weber. Insurance is a heavy millstone for any business, with particular peculiarities facing centre operators, especially in multisports centres. Too many operators overlook the benefit of squash affiliation, which includes the most competitive and comprehensive rates for squash & related activities. This was well described by the presentation delivered by Sarah at the national squash forum - Marsh Insurance Advantage - Sarah Dowds. Sarah Dowds, Corporate Sports Insurance Manager, of Marsh Advantage Insurance is at the ready to help centres operators and owners to intergrete other risks into parallel policies. Call her to discuss your needs directly at , or by sport.australia@marshadvantage.com. Cardio Squash and Play Move Learn are new and exciting introductory and strength and conditioning fitness programs being developed by Squash Australia: (click - Cardio Squash and Play Move Learn - Stephanie Yoon). OZ Squash is also improved for better delivery to schools, and on court conversions. If you are interested in these programs and running pilots, contact Squash Australia. RANKINGS Please look at the Q Squash website to check your ranking due on 1 December The appeal process in the policy provides for an internal review (like the old policy to give the rankers a chance to affirm or change their mind), and if the appellant remains aggrieved by that review decision, the appeal must be decided by an independent decision maker. FUNDRAISING AND SPONSORSHIP Tournament sponsorship partnerships are essential to help our clubs and centres to fund junior athletes development, through specialist coaching assisted by new technology and equipment. Our regional tournament hosts will be working hard on gathering sponsorships for next year s Cairns, Townsville and Mackay junior tournaments. NR introduced tournament shirts, and where available, other promotional merchandise to better promote the event and sponsors. Cairns has secured major sponsors and, in conjunction with NR, have completed the artwork to print a tournament shirt with the names of the platinum sponsor in large print and gold sponsors in smaller print. The shirts will be available for order before and with nominations - and all profits from shirt sales will be remitted to NR to subsidise northern players attendance at the Queensland Junior Championships.

PRESIDENT S President s Court COURT By Dean Morzone If you or someone you know has potential to support our region please contact Jules Condon at qsnrvicepresident@gmail.com, as chair of our Fundraising and Sponsorship committee. PROMOTION It is essential that we actively bring new players into our sport, including exploring ways to engage with and promote the sport to schools and convene vocational coaching clinics and camps. I urge clubs and centre operators to use social media across the popular platforms eg. Facebook and Snapchat like Sandgate Squash Centre: ( and Daisy Hill Squash Centre: ( As individuals, we can all share our passion for our great game using personal Facebook, and other social media. We d also love to see your photos on and off the court. Send your tips, stories and photographs (with names and places depicted) to kim@squashmedia.com.au. If you use a smart phone take and send your photos in high resolution. Published photos are always a valuable keep-sake for years. MERRY CHRISTMAS As the regular fixture seasons closes, I wish everyone a relaxing, safe and happy Christmas. I also take this opportunity to thank my committee, players, coaches, clubs & centre operators for their hard work making our sport great again. Thank you also to our dedicated supporters, family and friends and a very special thanks to Kim for this publication. See you on the court in Dean Morzone President As soon as you have a poster prepared for your event, please send it to kim@squashmedia.com.au You can either send a jpg (preferred) or pdf file of the poster. We recommend you promote your event 3 to 6 months prior to its commencement. After the event we encourage you to send Squash Media a short report with separate good quality images of presentations, court action or social shots. Ideally, we would like to receive images greater than 100kb that are not blurred.

RedStar Player of the Year REDSTAR Achievement and Encouragement Awards 1. Congratulations Michael. You are the 2018 Northern Region Player of the Year. How does that feel? Thank you. I feel proud and happy that I played great squash this year. 2. When did you first start playing squash and why? I was 5 years old when I first started playing squash. I started playing squash because Marc came back to Cairns and Mum took me down to see if I could hit the ball. It turned out that I could hit the ball and I loved it. 3. What do you like most about squash? I love squash because of the competition and how physical and technical it is. 4. How often do you play and train each week? I'm at Sportsworld training 4 days a week, in both group and private lessons. 5. What is your proudest achievement so far? My proudest achievement by far would have to be coming second at the AJC in October this year. 6. Who is your favourite player? The French General, Gregory Gaultier. 7. Does anyone else at your school play squash? No. 8. Name 3 people who have had the most impact on your development so far. Marc, Steve and Mum. 9. What is your goal in 2019? To be the best squash player I can be and to grow taller! CONGRATULATIONS

RedStar Player of the Year The two youngsters cleaned up winning the 2018 RedStar Awards. Firstly, the RedStar Achievement Award goes to Michael Lawrence from Cairns. Michael was running 3rd on the table before the Nationals to overtake both BJ MacDonald and Kurstyn Mather. Ingham s Liam Fascetti kept running into Michael Lawrence during the year but despite some gallant efforts was unable to beat Michael in the critical events. Liam picks up the RedStar Encouragement Award and lets hope he can cross the line at some stage during Michael with coach Steve Finitsis at the OJC where Mikey finished 3rd ACHIEVEMENT ARD Pts Michael Lawrence 35 BJ MacDonald 30 Kurstyn Mather 30 Courtney Mather 25 Wes Dyer 24 Kayce Hoani Vincent 22 Payton Douglas 14 Mathew Finitsis 10 Hayley Hankinson 10 Josh Porter 10 Bradley Martin 7 Hayley Menta 7 Jake Webb 5 ENCOURAGEMENT ARD Pts Liam Fascetti 14 Kiara Stubley 7 Brody DiBella 6 Lachlan Erba 6 Summer Palmer 6 Sean Julius Wright 5 Amity Alarcos 4 Matt Brazier 4 Kate Butcher 4 Kyle Hoani-Vincent 4 Kaci Newman 4 Jordan DiBella 3 Sophie Fadaely 3 Ally Rhodes 3 Jack Butcher 2 Corey Condon 2 Quinn Douglas 2 Alexis Harris 2 Teneille Lambert 2 Shantelle Ale 1 Xavier Morzone 1

Don't crush your cans and bottles if you want to cash in with the new scheme! Attention: All Centre Managers and Club Committees Are you aware of the Containers For Change Scheme? Lets reduce the waste your centre needs to dispose of and ultimately, reduce costs, take care of the environment and fundraise for your junior club. Cairns Junior Squash has started doing this and it has been simple to place some recycle bins in the centre and have someone deliver the recycling once a week to the collection centre. The registration was done online and was very easy and quick. The recycle centre counts up the containers and deposits the money directly into the junior bank account. This is the web address for more information, includes other services where recycling can be dropped off: Contacts for anyone wanting more information: Rob Fadaely and Jules Condon

Squash 52 Mackay Open Story by Gillian Nielsen Over 100 players playing over 200 games on 5 courts in 2 ½ days with players travelling from Brisbane, Gladstone, Rockhampton, Moranbah, Townsville and Ingham. What could possibly go wrong?? That was the challenge for organisers of the Open. Organised chaos seemed to come to mind, but it all fell into place once again. Thank you to the players who were able to compete on the Friday night and although some partied a bit that evening (and Saturday night too), were there again on Saturday and Sunday to give it their all. Our Novice division had a surprise nomination from Ben Courtice as the super-sub (we needed 1 more player to make it an 8 draw). Unfortunately, Ben wasn't on his best form for the weekend and was unable to come away with a win, but he is determined to train hard and improve his form for the Open. Hannah O'Toole made a return from Townsville after her successful NQ Games tournament winning the Bronze for the Novices. It was hard to keep this young lady off the court between matches and I look forward to watching her continued improvement in the future Open Champion: Wes Dyer Trevor Loughran (won the Open last year) was up against the much younger and greatly improved Nick Briggs. Unfortunately, this year Trevor was unable to win this epic battle and went onto lose to BJ MacDonald coming 4th overall. He has pledged to return again next year to do battle against the youngsters. Saturday saw both our state and national members of Parliament come in to announce that the 52 Squash & Fitness Club Inc was successful in gaining funding (to the value of $ ) to replace flooring on our courts. This was a great surprise for the committee who have been working hard to raise the funding for the floor replacement. With both grants, we will be able to replace the flooring on more than Courts 5 & 6 as we first planned. This made the Saturday night Xmas party even more of a celebration with the Courtice family celebrating 50 years at the courts, the biggest Open tournament and the news of new floors for next year's tournaments.

Squash 52 Mackay Open Austin Powers made an appearance with the other cool dudes from the 60's and proceeded to party into the wee small hours of Sunday. The band was great and the crowd had a blast. Sunday morning saw a few dusty heads at the breakfast bbq and the early start was not appreciated by some, but we managed to get games started on time and the day flowed somewhat smoothly A Grade Champion: Jake Webb The final positions were hotly contested by all, with even more great squash being played. Although the young guns prevailed in the Open and A Grade, it was the more mature players who took out the other grades. A big thank you to all of the players and their families for making this year's Open such a success. If we can continue to support each centre's tournaments in the future, the sport that we all love will continue to grow in popularity and attract new players which is for the benefit of all. I think we have reached the maximum number of nominations that the courts can handle. This means that next year, you have to get in quick with your nomination if you want a spot and the chance to play on our new floors. Thank you once again to the Courtice family for their ongoing support of the 52 Squash & Fitness Club Inc and for making us all feel like we belong. And thank you to Aunty Carmel and the other ladies for supplying us with all of the morning tea goodies. 18 PRESIDENT S 2018 REDSTAR COURT ARDS REDSTAR Achievement and Encouragement Awards In an effort to recognise more NR juniors we have revised our system of performance recognition. From now on every placegetter (1-2-3) will be recognised. Each winner of an aged event will be listed in the Achievement category and every player who finishes second or third will be listed in the Encouragement category. Once a player has won an event they will be elevated and listed in the Achievement category even if they finish runner up or third in other events. If players are equal they will be listed in alphabetical order. Players receive 3 points for winning a qualifier, 6 points for winning a Queensland State title and 9 points for winning a National title (AJO & AJC). Players will receive 2 point s for finishing runner up in a qualifier, 4 points for runner up in a State final and 6 points for runner up in a National final. Players will receive 1 point for finishing third in a qualifier, 2 points for third in a State final and 3 points for third in a National event. U19 Players will also receive 1 bonus point for each result because they cannot enter 2 events. Even though the Ingham qualifier was played in October 2018 it is still a 2019 qualifier so the results from that event will contribute to the 2019 NR Player of the Year Award. A 2019 qualifier played in 2018 will not be included. The player who accumulates the most points will be declared the Player of the Year. There will be joint winners if 2 players finish on the same number of points. The aim of the points system is to automate the selection and player results determine the outcome. The system is also designed to encourage players to support all events in their quest to accumulate points. If an event is combined eg U17 and U19 Combined then it will be analysed to ensure points are allocated to both U17 and U19. A direct match up of the best two players in an age group will determine the winner of that age group. Otherwise the highest finishing position in an age group will receive the maximum points. To be awarded points there must be at least two players competing in an age group. A player can only enter up to 2 events so they can only be rewarded with 2 results. An U9 player who might win a combined event eg U9, U11 and U13 Combined can only be rewarded for the U13 victory and their own age group U9 providing there are two U9 players competing. If the re is only one player in U9 they will earn points for U13 only. If there was one player in U9 and one in U11 they will still only be rewarded for their efforts in U13.
