The 2011 Burden Memorial Long-range Regional By Gary Rasmussen The Ray Burden Memorial LR Regional Championship is just one in a series of long-range and prone shooting events that local competitors put on their "must do" calendars each year. Of course, some shooters prefer one tournament over another and pick-and-choose a bit, but the Burden is always well attended. The 2011 competition was held over the Memorial Day Weekend, its traditional three-day weekend, and attendance was near to the Eagle Creek, Oregon, Douglas Ridge Rifle Club's maximum: 57 shooters (60 is the limit on this 20-target facility). There were seven F Class Open shooters, eight F Class Target Rifle shooters, and 42 "Palma Rifle" shooters (.308 or.223, iron sights) entered through the two-day individual competition, and there were six 4-shooter teams in the Palma Course Team event. The DRRC Range: lower pits for 200 to 600 yards; upper pits for 800 to 1000 yards The Burden tournament begins with a practice day on Friday (May 27 this year), then the individual tournament is fired on Saturday (Palma Course of 15-shots at 800, 900 and 1000 yards, plus an Any Rifle/Iron Sight 20-shot match) and Sunday (Palma Course, plus 20-shot Any Rifle/Any Sight match), and the tournament ends on Monday with the Palma Course Team. In the Pacific Northwest this time of the year is a bit unsettled, weather-wise, and the Burden can have rain, some times lots and lots of rain, but this year we lucked out: the Friday practice had some heavy rain late in the day, causing most participants to pass on the final 1000-yard stage, and Saturday morning's first relay at the 800-yard line had a light rain, but that was it for the remainder of the weekend, except for a brief rain shower at the end of the Team match that many of us waited through before firing the final stage. The Washington State Palma Championship is fired at Rattlesnake Mountain, near Richland, the weekend prior to the Burden, and at that Range the big fear is a sudden blast of air or sudden reversal in wind direction that puts a record shot off the target (there is no shame in telling people that you had a miss at 'Snake!). At the DRRC Range there is usually no concern over misses but you can get "9-ed" to death with the quick changes in mirage. As one newcomer to the DRRC asked me: How in the world do you read the conditions here? My response was: If the flags and mirage are going in the same direction, that means something, but if there is no clear indicator it is pure guesswork! This 2011 tournament produced some remarkable scores in conditions that were perhaps the best I have seen in several years, but there were still times 6

when the shooters were moaning and groaning over wide shots that didn't seem to match up to the conditions they were reading in their spotting scopes. All of the Burden scores, and many other tournament results, can be found on the Highpower Rifle page at Washington State resident, ex-bad Apple Junior Team member, and current USA Palma Team and USA Under-25 Team shooter (World Championships in October at Brisbane, Australia), Trevor Massey had a "perfect" Sunday en route to an overall win. Trevor started out with a x Palma and a x 20-shot (the match winning score), all with the iron-sight Palma Rifle, to go into the lead by one point over Michael Maurer (Washington resident and past-usa Palma Team member: 1999, 2003 and 2007), x to x; Mike had scores of x (match winner) and 195-8x. David Littlefield, the freshly crowned Washington State Palma Champion and ex-bad Apples Junior Rifle Team member, was one point behind Mike with x (445-24x and 195-5x). Wayne Budbill was fourth overall after Saturday with x (441-20x and x), Rich Vedvick was fifth with x ( and 193-4x), and Oregon's Kevan Hoffarth was sixth with x (437-12x and 196-7x). In the Master Class, Washington's Frank Fernandez was the first-day leader with x (438-12x and 195-6x). Oregon's Don Crigler was second with x (434-15x and 197-6x). And 14-year Brianna Rachinski, 2011 USA Under-25 Alternate and Washington State Bad Apples Junior Team member, was third with x (434-15x and 195-8x). In the Expert Class, Canadian Peter Dobell was at the top after the first day with x (423-12x and 188-3x). Washington resident Brent Olsen was second with 611-9x (424-4x and 187-5x), and Washington Junior shooter Gabrielle Pitre was third with 585-8x (407-3x and 178-5x). Ron Herms began his dominance of the F Class competition with x (433-8x and x), but Glen Taylor and Chris Long were very close with, respectively, x4(39-10x and 190-0x) and x (436-10x and 191-7x). The F/TR competition was led by Mark Anderson with x (439-21x and 187-2x), but John Weil, 2009 USA World Championship Team member, was close with x (435-14x and 186-5x). The crowd of satisfied shooters waiting for the official awards The shooting conditions on the second day were ideal: overcast with very light breezes, which was a good thing because reading mirage was difficult to impossible without some sunlight to raise mirage! 7

Trevor Massey slammed the door on his competition by "cleaning" the Sunday stages, firing a perfect "450" Palma Course (the match winning x), a feat that very few shooters can boast of, and finishing with a perfect 20-shot 1000-yard stage of x. Trevor's total aggregate was x (out of a possible x), which is one of the best scores ever fired at the Burden. David Littlefield also had a fine Sunday shoot, x and x (match winner), and came in second overall with x. Mike Maurer finished in third place overall with x with scores of x and x. The 1st High Master award went to Wayne Budbill with x (445-24x and 196-6x), while Rich Vedvick was 2nd HM with x (445-24x and 199-9x) and I took 3rd HM with x (447-27x and x). Anette Wachter had an excellent Sunday shoot with x (449-27x and x, only one point lost through the day) but had ammo problems on Saturday that kept her out of the overall standings. Special Category awards were given to those who did not receive regular class awards: High Senior to California resident and 2011 Palma Team Captain Dennis Flaharty ( x), High Woman to Canadian Judy Anderson ( x), High Grand Senior to Bob Gudgel ( x), and High Junior to Jennifer Nyberg, 2007 and 2011 USA U-25 Team and Bad Apples Junior Team member, with x. Brianna Rachinski had a fabulous effort on Sunday with x in the Palma Course and 199-9x in the 20-shot match (647-34x Sunday aggregate) to win the Master class with a total of x. We are all praying that she will find an open slot on the World Championship U-25 Team! Frank Fernandez took the 2nd MA award with a total of x (436-11x and 193-5x on Sunday). Canadian Al Katona finished only a single point back at x (441-16x and x on Sunday). Peter Dobell stayed in the lead in the Expert Class with x and 194-5x to win the class with a total of x. Ron Herms pulled away in the F Class competition on Sunday with scores of x and x, excellent scores on the tough "half-sized" FC/LR target, to win the grand aggregate with x. Glen Taylor was 2nd FC with x (443-19x and 193-5x) and F/TR shooter Mark Anderson was 3rd FC with x (445-20x and 192-5x). F/TR shooter John Weil was only three Xs behind with x (446-19x and 196-7x). Trevor Massey, 2011 Burden Memorial winner 8

The final event is the Memorial Day Palma Course Team Match. The Washington Wranglers Shooting Team highlights the Burden as an opportunity to set a National Record, and I am usually the dedicated coach for the event, but this year I was coaching, and shooting as it turned out, a USA Palma Team squad (Trevor Massey, Kelly Bachand, David Littlefield and myself); David also took a turn coaching in the event. The Wranglers did indeed enter a team, and a good one: Rich Vedvick, Wayne Budbill, Anette Wachter and Mike Maurer; Rich and Wayne were the coaching duo. The USA U-25 had a good team, too: Jennifer Nyberg, Abe Kamerman, Brianna Rachinski and Haley Rettmer; Michael Storer (2011 U-25 Team member) was the dedicated coach. The Canadian contingent entered the "B.C. Old Guys" (Bob and Don Pitcairn, Peter Dobell and Judy Anderson; Judy, of course, not really an "Old Guy"). Bud Solis put together "Bud's Gang" (himself, Bob Gudgel, Kevan Hoffarth and Charles Mohseni). And there was a "Washington Bad Apples" Team coached by Asa Yam (Garth Stone, Gaby and Natasha Pitre, and Luke Rettmer). The Team Match is run using paid target pullers for each team, which is a part of the entry fee, so the event moves along at a brisk pace. The 15-shot per shooter 800-yard stage was finished in less than 60 minutes, each team is allowed 97 total minutes, and the USA Palma Team got through without losing a point, x, while the Wranglers lost a single point for x. The "Old Guys" did not look so old when they also a posted 599, with 34x. The U-25 Team was not too off the mark with x. At the 900-yard Stage, the USA Palma and Wrangler Teams both lost three points, x and x, respectively, keeping the Palma Team in the lead by a point: x to x. The U-25 Team came back strong with x to tie the "Old Guys" (592-16x) at 1191, 65x to 50x, respectively. The 1000-yard stage is usually where the match is determined, being the toughest distance, and this event was no exception. The USA Palma Team slid a bit by posting x, leaving the win open for the Wranglers. It was looking like the Wranglers would prevail but the final few shots told the tale and the stage was again a tie, x, giving the Palma Team the win with x to the Wranglers x. The U-25 Team took third place with x (584-17x) while the "Old Guys" had x (584-19x). Match Director Kevan Hoffarth with Trevor, Kelly, David and Gary 9

National Records broken at 2011 Governor s-20 June 18 & 19, 2011 Sharpshooters Clint Whitney and Dennis Abbarno show off their gold and silver place medals. Saturday s line was nearly full on a cloudy, cool day in June. On a cool and sometimes rainy June weekend, thirty-three pistol shooters gathered at Tacoma Rifle & Revolver Club to compete in the annual Governor s-20 championship. Out-of-state competitors arrived from Arizona, Oregon and Idaho, to shoot in this match. From Washington: Spokane, Bellingham, Vancouver, and the Tri-cities were all represented. Steve Reiter, from Tucson won the match, breaking 5 national records in the grand-senior category. Tacoma club members did exceptionally well at their home range, taking gold medals in the expert and marksman classes, and a silver in the marksman class. Two Experts won state leg medals with their 22 pistols, finishing ahead of all the Masters competing with their center-fire guns in the Washington s Excellence-in-Competition match. Overall, it was a weekend of shooting! The results: Match Winner Steve Reiter x Master Jeff Hendrickson x Expert Robert Gamble x Sharpshooter Clint Whitney x Marksman Larry Arndt x The State EIC match results were (23 competitors): Bronze Medal (22) Robert Gamble 285-5x Bronze Medal (22) Beverly Esler 279-8x The distinguished revolver match (18 competitors): Winner & 8 pts Scott Lorenz 278-3x 6 pts Eric Schaffer 265-3x The CMP EIC Leg match results were (11 non-distinguished competitors): 6 pts Robert Cozens 256-3x 10

Rob Cozens and Scott Lorenz competed in the Excellence-in Competition matches following Sunday s relay. Rob was the top non-distinguished competitor in the CMP match and Scott won the Distinguished Revolver match. Both picked up points toward their distinguished award. In addition, Scott won all three EIC matches, and was runner-up in the Governor s-20 championship. What is the Governor s-20? In Washington, the top 10 pistol competitors and top 10 rifle competitors at a state championship each year receive letters signed by our state s Governor. Saturday s relay following a day of shooting at TRRC s nicely landscaped pistol range. 11

The Washington State Mid Range Championship By Gary Rasmussen Cascade Shooting Facilities is the home of the Washington State 600 yard Championship, an 80 shot Prone tournament. The 2011 match was held on Saturday, June 18, and, unfortunately, that was not the best day to pick to shoot 600 yards: it was drizzling all day and a fog bank kept falling and lifting, playing visual games with the shooters. But, on the plus side, there was almost no air movement at all, so if you could see the bull s eye long enough to break a good shot, the bullet would hit the X ring. The scores fired through the day were actually surprisingly good considering the poor visual conditions. There were 27 shooters entered in the event. David Littlefield was crowned the yard Champion, keeping a tradition intact that has been going on since the match began seven years ago: a new Champion every year. I know that there will be a repeat winner eventually, but 2011 was not the year! David had 20 shot match scores of x, x, x and x for a winning total of x. Anette Wachter was second overall and 1 st High Master with x: x, 199 9x, x and x (she needed an 18x on the final string and almost managed to do it!). Kelly Bachand was third overall and 2 nd HM with x: x, x, x and x. Mike Maurer and Wayne Budbill were just out of the money list with 798s: 53x and 48x, respectively. These top five shooters had 13 clean 20 shot matches out of 20 total, and that seemed exceptional for the whiteout that varied from ghostly thin to nearly opaque. In the Master class, Charles Mohseni was the top prone shooter with a total of x: 193 5x, 195 3x, 194 0x and x (that final match string gave him the win). The combined Marksman, Sharpshooter and Expert classes was won by Steve Johnson with a total of x: 194 6x, x, 194 7x and 197 8x. In the F Class competition, there were four shooters slugging it out for top shooter recognition and Mike Rockett prevailed with a total of x: 199 7x, x, x and x. Mike s match #3 score of x tied the existing National Senior Record. David Littlefield 12

West District Highpower Championship By Gary Rasmussen The West District Championship is one of four WSRPA matches where shooters can strive for State Distinguished medals: State Highpower, State Service Rifle, East and West District. The 2011 match was held at the Cascade Shooting Facilities, Ravensdale, on Sunday, June 19: 80 shot Regional Match Course. The Championship is determined by the 80 shot aggregate while the Distinguished match is a 50 shot NMC pulled out of the fired stages. While the previous day was soggy, to say the least, this day was significantly improved; still overcast but no rain! There were 18 shooters entered in the match. James Obermeyer shot a fabulous score of x to win the West District. In Highpower there is an old saying: you win the match on the 200yd line, you lose the match at 600yds. Jim shot 199 5x in the initial 200 yard Standing match and followed that up with a 199 7x in the 200 yard Rapid fire Sitting/Kneeling match. So, Jim left the 200 yard line only two points down and that pretty much slammed the door on the competition! He continued his fine day with x at 300 yard Rapid fire Prone and 200 9x at 600 yards. I was 1 st High Master with x: 191 4x, x, 198 8x and x. The High Service Rifle shooter was Spokane s James Patterson with x: 188 6x, 197 3x, 194 6x and 191 3x. Charles Mohseni was 1 st Master with x: 179 4x, x, 193 1x and 191 7x. Greg Truchot was 2 nd MA with x: 181 2x, 192 2x, 193 4x and 190 2x. And in the combined Marksman, Sharpshooter and Expert classes, David Scott prevailed with x: 182 0x, 196 5x, 195 4x and 188 1x. The High Junior award went to Dan Stone in the combined class with 728 7x: 172 2x, 194 3x, 180 0x and 182 2x. James Obermeyer getting well deserved congrats from Steve Fisher 13

2011 WASHINGTON STATE PALMA CHAMPIONSHIPS Rattlesnake Mountain Range, May More than one comment was made at this yearʼs Washington State Palma Championship about the changing demographics in our sport. One only had to look up and down the firing line to see that this yearʼs match was populated by young shooters. Not only that, so was the podium. In the High Master class six of the first eight were from our U-25 group or had just graduated from it. And in the Master class two of the first three were juniors. Quite a change from previous years. Mostly moderate to light breeze greeted us in the morning and held all the first day, veering from 4:00 early to 5:00/7:00 during the day to 9:00/10:00 late in the team match. Mixed in, of course, were the usual pickups and right mirage/left flags stuff that led to some unfortunate results. Rattlesnake has a way of spreading the field and this year was no exception. But when the first dayʼs scores were tallied, the big-end of the results sheet had David Littlefield ( MW) ahead of Anette Wachter (441-22) and Kelly Bachand (440-17). Frank Fernandez (438-14) and Dave Hoffarth (433-13) led the MA/EX class. After each dayʼs individual matches, one stage of the Palma team match is fired. In the first dayʼs 800 yard stage, Coach Kelly Bachandʼs USA Under-25 team shot error free for a three point, first day lead over the BCRA team from Canada and five points over the Washington Wranglers who had a mystery mechanical problem that resulted in a record shot off-target. The Fern dʼaliens from Ferndale, WA impressed everyone with their clever team name and that this all-girl team had just one shooter with previous NRA long-range experience. Undeterred, they jumped in with enthusiasm and determination. As someone once said, You go girls! All in all, a pretty nice day with temperatures in the 80ʼs, although a bit benign by Rattlesnake standards, that would soon change. Beginning with 800 yards/relay 2, this is what day two looked like - up to 18 minutes of left wind with the usual angle changes and variability. Now this is more like the Rattlesnake we have come to know and love. On a day when a 435 should have been the winning score, David Littlefield cleaned 800 and 900 and dropped only three points at 1000 yards to win the day with an impressive Wind? What wind? Anette Wachter, on the same 1000 yard relay, bested Davidʼs with a 148-5, finishing with in second place. Michael Storer (435-18) was third. All this in very snotty conditions. Same two names from day-one led the MA/EX class, only with their positions reversed; Dave Hoffarth (433-14) and Frank Fernandez (431-10). The 900 yard stage of the team match was challenging, as well. In progressively dirtier conditions, all teams stopped after two shooters in the first time block, hoping for a moderation in wind effects after the pit-change. Since the breeze was about as unfriendly as it could get, the only thing it could do was improve (from the shootersʼ perspective), which it did, sort of. All teams finished their last two shooters uneventfully given the conditions, which were far removed from flat calm. Both U-25 and the Wranglers tied for the day with U-25 still in first and the Wranglers now in second place, five points back. Day 3 had less intensity but more switches and ups-and-downs. Velocity varied from 5-12 mph and overall direction between 4:30 and 7:00. While the individual match could have gone a couple of ways, David and Anette mostly held their own throughout the day. At 900 yards, David's puller was trying to give him fast service when the cable left the pulley, blocking the target from full hoist and causing a delay for repair. It seemed that 14

when the carrier was returned to service, adequate time had elapsed for David to be entitled to a sighter, since it was a range problem. But there appeared to be some some lack of clarity by those directly involved in the applicable rules, complicated by the interjection of some outside uninformed opinion. A small discussion ensued and David proceeded without sighters. His first shot was a waterline eight, which gave him the wind value and he finished the string in good shape. Meanwhile, Wayne Budbill methodically shot the only score in the 440ʼs, winning day three with a Close on his heels was Trevor Massey with and Abe Kamerman in third with Two junior girls dominated the MA/EX class. In a near tie, Brianna Rachinski (428-16) just edged Haley Rettmer (427-16). After three days of shooting, David Littlefield ( ) came out on top a scant six points ahead of High Woman, Anette Wachter ( ). Michael Storer ( ) was 1st HM and Kelly Bachand ) 2nd HM. Frank Fernandez ( ) was 1st MA/EX followed by Haley Rettmer ( ) in second place. Worth mentioning is that Anette started shooting NRA long-range and Palma just two short years ago and Haley has just begun her first year. How quickly some progress. The team match ended very close, as well. For the final 1000 yard stage, conditions were less than favorable so the teams generally chose to wait and, if necessary, go with only one shooter in the first time block. A few minutes after Commence Fire a small window of lighter wind opened. The Wranglers had their first shooter ready to go and began firing. With quick and accurate shooting and coaching, plus aggressive target pulling, they were able to finish two shooters in 15 minutes, losing a total of eight points and overcoming their five point deficit to post a small lead over U-25. While the Wranglersʼ third shooter was readying, the fresher, erratic breeze returned and all teams stopped and waited for the pitchange. After a post pit-change hold, firing resumed and U-25 erased the deficit with the Wranglers for a tie with the final shooters yet to fire. In the end, the Wranglers put enough points on the board to squeak out a five point victory in an intense and enjoyable match. 16 Two State Pistol Distinguished Awards presented at Regional June 4 & 5, 2011 at Kitsap Rifle & Revolver Club Robert McGowan (near left) is presented a Gold state-distinguished medal for winning the State EIC match with his 45. Rob Cozens (back right) placed second in the EIC match with his 45, also winning a Gold medal and earning distinguished status in the Washington State distinguished pistol shot program. I guess wearing a green shirt helped! Saturday s relay was full, with pistol shooters traveling from all over the country. Jimmie Dorsey and George Sinclair from Idaho are the 2 nd and 3 rd from the right. Clint Whitney, from Kennewick, shows off a good rapid fire target. 16

Thirty-seven competitors arrived from all over the country to shoot in this year s Regional Pistol Championship, held on June 4 th and 5th. In addition to Washington, Oregon and Idaho, competitors arrived from Arizona, Ohio, and New Jersey. The weather was ideal for shooting, on the best weekend of the year by far, with clear, blue skies and 70 degree temperatures. Four national records were set in the Grand Senior category; two by Mel Makin, of Oregon, and two by Steve Reiter, of Arizona. With a full line on Saturday and Tami s hamburgers for lunch each day, it was a successful championship. The Regional results were: Gold Medal Dave Lange x Silver Medal Steve Reiter x Bronze Medal Mel Makin x The CMP EIC Leg match results were: 6pts Charles Deilke 254-6x The distinguished revolver match: Winner & 6pts David Schmolke 267-4x The State EIC match results were: Gold Medal (45) Robert McGowan x Gold Medal (45) Robert Cozens 281-9x Jeff Hendrickson (left) examines a slow fire shot. He took second (of 12) in the master class. Beverly Esler (3 rd from left) won the sharpshooter class in her last match as a sharpshooter. She advanced to the expert class the following week. 17

The 2011 Washington State Highpower Rifle Championship By Gary Rasmussen The Paul Bunyan Rifle and Sportsman s Club of Puyallup, WA, has held the State Highpower Rifle Championship for more years than I care to remember, and Bob Wendt has been the Match Director and Chief Range Officer for nearly all of them! This first-weekend of June championship tournament has endured 90-degree days, 50- degree days, dry days and wet days, and sometimes the two days of the competition are so different that one wonders if it is the same match at all. The 2011 event was lucky enough to fall in between rain periods during a particularly wet Western Washington spring: Saturday was sunny and warm with light and variable breezes while Sunday was mostly overcast with even less air motion. I don t think we could have received a better two days to shoot this State Championship! The tournament schedule has all of the short-range stages on Saturday and the 600-yard stages on Sunday. The first day begins at the 200-yard line for Standing and Rapid-fire Sitting/Kneeling and then moves to the 300-yard line for Rapid-fire Prone. Instead of moving back to the shorter line to repeat the stages, the second 300-yard Rapid-fire stage is fired back-to-back before moving forward. This procedure not only speeds up the match but also defeats the deep shadow that forms during sunny days in front of the 300-yard line late in the day; I have shot in that murk before and can attest to the difficulty! The first stage of each position begins with two sighting shots but the second goaround is fired without sighters, requiring the shooters to keep good records of their zeros. Oregon s Trent Hering won the first event of the tournament, the Solis Trophy, given to the shooter with the best Standing-stage aggregate. Trent fired 194-5x and 193-5x for a total of x. Rick Cram was the 1 st High Master/Match Rifle winner with x (190-5x and 196-5x). I was 2 nd HM/MR with 384-5x (193-1x and 191-4x). In the Service Rifle/High Master category Allen Spiker was the top award winner with 381-9x (191-6x and 190-3x). Chuck Spiker, father to Allen, was the Match Rifle Master winner with 358-3x, while Charles Mohseni was the Service Rifle Master winner with 379-6x. Abe Kamerman was 2 nd SR/MA with 379-6x, losing the tiebreaker to Charles. In the Combined Expert class, Mel Goudge was the class winner with 366-1x, and Andrew Wiesen was 2 nd EX with 359-4x. The Combined Sharpshooter and Marksman Service Rifle class was won by Harold Smith with 361-4x. The Maj. William Kelly Trophy (200-yard Rapid-fire Sitting/Kneeling) was won by Oregon s Allen Spiker with a total of x (200-12x and 199-7x). I was 1 st HM/MR with x (198-12x and x) and Pete Kislinger was 2 nd HM/MR with x (195-5x and 193-5x). Steve Olson was the top Service Rifle HM shooter with x (200-12x and 197-9x). In the Master class, PJ Brackenbury was the Match Rifle winner with 392-9x, Abe Kamerman was the top Master Class Service Rifle shooter with x, and Charles Mohseni was 2 nd SR/MA with x. The rifle-combined Expert class was won by David Scott with x while Jerry Bentler was 2 nd EX with 387-9x, and the Marksman/Sharpshooter combined class was won by Tanner Dennison with x. The 300-yard Rapid-fire Prone Dick Sallee Trophy was won by Rick Cram with a grand total of x (197-6x and 197-8x). I was the MR/HM winner with x (196-6x and 197-8x) and Jim Obermeyer was 2 nd MR/HM with x. Allen Spiker was the SR/HM winner with x, PJ Brackenbury was 1 st MR/MA with 383-4x, Anette Wachter was 1 st SR/MA x, and Abe Kamerman was 2 nd SR/MA with 385-7x. Steve Johnson was the 1 st MR/EX winner with x and Terry Minard was 2 nd EX with 386-9x. Junior Tanner Dennison was again the MK/SS winner with 387-5x. 18

The first day, a total of 120 shots, ended with myself in the lead with x. Rick Cram was second overall with x and Allen Spiker was third overall with x. The lead was more a result of getting all rapid-fire shots off within time, not cross-firing in any stage, and keeping the Standing score close to the match winner, rather than firing great scores. But, points are points in a shooting match. The Sunday-only Willie Harris 600-yard Prone Trophy was won by Jim Obermeyer with a total score of x (199-12x and x). I was 1 st MR/HM with x (199-8x and x) and Rick Cram was 2 nd MR/HM with x (197-10x and x). Steve Podleski won the High Master Any Sight category with a total of x (199-10x and x). Mike Rockett, the only F Class shooter of the day, shot x and x for a total of x. Steve Olson was the SR/HM winner with x (199-10x and x). Brent Olsen took the MR/MA award with x. Abe Kamerman was the 1 st SR/MA shooter with x and David Sotelo was 2 nd SR/MA with 389-8x. David Scott took the Expert class with x, Tanner Dennison was 1 st MK/SS with 370-5x and Harold Smith was 2 nd with x. The final tally of the 160-shot State Championship aggregate resulted in my 21 st Highpower Rifle Championship: x to Rick Cram s x (1 st MR/HM) and Steve Olson s x (1 st SR/HM). Steve also won the Grant-Lau Service Rifle Trophy (highest score with a Service Rifle). Pete Kislinger was 2 nd MR/HM with x. Anette Wachter was the High Woman Annie Oakley Trophy winner with x. Oregon s Chuck Spiker was the 1 st SR/MA winner with x. The top Master class shooter (Speer Trophy) was Abe Kamerman with x, while Charles Mohseni was 2 nd SR/MA with x. Oregon s Jerika Wallace was the Junior Champion Trophy winner with x and Todd Branin was the top Unclassified shooter with x. The Mike Dull Trophy (top Expert class shooter) was David Scott with a total of x. Tanner Dennison was 1 st MK/SS with x and Harold Smith was 2 nd MK/SS with x. The Washington State Distinguished Rifleman program is a 50-shot NMC pulled out of the grand aggregate. WSRPA members, regardless of state residency, are eligible to win the truly beautiful medals made by Blackinton. The rules are similar to the national CMP Distinguished match but any rifle is allowed. There were 31 non- Distinguished shooters, allowing three legs to be awarded: already-distinguished Rick Cram was the Match Winner (Col Joseph Smith Trophy) with x; Jim Obermeyer was the top non-d shooter with x (his final leg and gold medal); Abe Kamerman was second non-d with x (his first leg for a bronze medal); and Steve Olson was third non-d with x (his final leg and gold medal). The tournament course of fire has a third string at 600 yards on Sunday. For the match rifle or F Class or Any Sight shooters, this is a stand-alone match. I was the high Match Rifle with x while Bud Solis was 2 nd MR with 197-9x. Steve Podleski was the top Any Sight shooter with x and Mike Rockett shot a second x with his F Class rifle. For the service rifle shooters participating in the CMP EIC Match, the third 600-yard stage is the beginning of the 50-shot NMC (shot in reverse order to save time and targets). The top three shooters, all Distinguished, were Allen Spiker (490-17x), Kristin Schwartz (488-15x) and Abe Kamerman (487-13x). There were 24 non-distinguished shooters to allow two legs to be awarded. Husband and wife Charles Mohseni and Anette Wachter took the two legs with x (8 points and Charles final step to the gold Distinguished badge) and 476-9x (6 points and Anette s start-up bronze medal). Michael and Kristin Schwartz are the only other married couple I know of who won CMP legs in the same match. Photo Gallery of the State Championship: 19
