1 Your Highest for HIS Purpose Belief Faith Hope TRUST Succeed TRANSITIONING YOUTH TO ADULTHOOD Through The Game of Soccer BY TEACHING LIFE SKILLS! By Paul Martin Dec/2017
2 History In 2010 Paul Martin, a local soccer coach joined the Centennial College Men s Varsity Soccer program. Paul immediately saw a great need to help transition the youth of our community in the East end of Toronto from youth to adults. Soccer presented them with opportunities of post- secondary education as well as and international opportunities of playing the sport at the highest level, but more importantly teaching them life skills. Mr. Martin approached a number of existing clubs in the Scarborough and Durham area in order to setup a Youth to Adulthood Community Engagement Program. Working in the sport of soccer the program was initially created to help recruit and train players at first for the college and then became a resource to the greater community at large. Paul eventually partnered the program with the Wexford Soccer Club. With limited funding and support this small group of individuals believed in the vision and mission of the program and set it afoot. The vision was a continuation of what his father had done before him. A generation ago Sturgeon Martin planted the seeds of being a worker for the harvest in the way that he approached and interacted with people in the game of soccer. Sturgeon, was a well-respected pillar of the Scarborough Soccer community, and was the father of the Program Director Paul Martin. He was a Soccer Manager and Referee for over 30 years. He touched the hearts and minds of many. A Native of Trinidad and Tobago Sturgeon loved sports especially both Cricket and Soccer. Sturgeon immigrated to Canada and worked as a factory worker for Sears in the 70 s. He spent most of his time around a soccer pitch. He often would go into the underprivileged neighborhoods and find kids to play soccer to keep them active and away from other more dubious activities. Many of these youths would not have been involved in the sport or have productive lives had Sturgeon not taken the time to seek them out and get them involved. Sturgeon and some of his peers were able to assemble and train some of the best youth teams in the province during the 80 s. In his later years as a team Manager and Referee his desire, was not to get to a higher level, but to engage kids in working at something that would prove rewarding, becoming a soccer referee, he used the time to mentor individuals. Husband, Father, Teacher, Friend, Mentor, Faithful and Humble Servant were just a few of his titles. In 2010 Sturgeon Martin was diagnosed with Leukemia. It was then that his son Paul Martin decided to dedicate a soccer program in his honour and Hi Profile Football was born. Sturgeon passed away in April of 2012, however, not before he had established his legacy. The torch was passed to his son Paul who pledged to carry on the work that his father had begun. Since the inception of the program, we have attained sending players to play at the highest level of the sport with national team representation and international trials. Many participants have also gone on to post-secondary education selection as well as varsity participation earning athletic scholarships and eventual graduation. There have been many college and university grads who have now become coaches and referees who give back to the game. On the field, the program has produced talented teams and players with the teams have generally finishing near the top of the table. The program has boasted a record of 158W-69L-35T, a 67% win ratio across eight years and fifteen seasons having had over 250 past members. Psalm 4:3 But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: The LORD will hear when I call unto him.
3 Vision "Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. Proverbs 29:18 The objective of the Hi Profile Football Program is to develop not only the player but the person as a whole to reach their highest potential whether that be a scholarship, play internationally, or a professional career in soccer. At Hi Profile It's More Than a Game! It's A Lifestyle! Mission Our MISSION is to ensure that our youth transition into adulthood and have a home to do so. Using the sport of soccer we help individuals develop life skills which will be used to further a well-rounded productive individual with a healthy wholesome lifestyle.
