3 Mission Looking forward with confidence and excitement looking back with pride Folkestone Optimist Hockey Club aims to inspire and nurture hockey players of all abilities and create a life-long love of hockey whatever their ability or background. We pride ourselves in identifying and developing talent and most importantly enabling all players to be the best that they can be in a friendly family atmosphere. 4 Welcome Welcome to Folkestone Optimist Hockey Club who prides itself on being a welcoming, competitive family orientated club. We warmly welcome senior players (established, new and returning) as well as juniors and their families. We are a united club whose ethos centres on the development of talent though the passion of hockey. We house; o 7 Senior Men s squads o 4 Senior Ladies Squads o Both Men s and Ladies Vets sides o Mixed Summer League o Boys And Girls Squads at U18, U16, U14, U12, U10 & U8. The club operates an inclusive policy so that adults and children of all abilities can access this amazing sport. o 4

5 Welfare FOHC take great pride in its welfare policies and structure. We have a Welfare Officer who is registered with England Hockey and, with their team, deal with matters of welfare concern. 7 The Clubhouse Folkestone Optimist Hockey Club has a state of the art home with facilities that rival some of the best in the UK. 12 England Hockey Structure England Hockey operates a Single System Player Pathway which provides junior coaching and competition as a route to representative hockey for County, Regional and National levels. Folkestone Optimist Hockey Club is a centre of excellence as a JDC (Junior Development Centre) for all ages U13-U17, for both boys and girls. This is run for 10 weeks from early September from pm on Wednesdays. FOHC are also a JAC (Junior Academy Centre) which runs from January to April inclusive. From JAC, players progress to the Junior Regional Performance Centre (JRPC) which is based at Tonbridge. JRPC Tier 1 sees plays train to earn the chance to represent the Tonbridge Tigers South East of England side against the Bury Tigers & Northwood Tigers. The best players from the three Tigers squads are then selected to play for the Saxon Tigers at the England Hockey Futures Cup & High Performance Camps. These replicate an international tournament or training camp, and are the early stages of England Selection. Regional and National performance is supplemented with Anti Doping, Nutritional and Lifestyle talks. The Club has seen success over recent years at both JAC and JRPC level. The season has seen 21 Players attend the JAC training squads with 9 being selected to represent Kent in the Southern Counties Championships. A further 4 players, Emily Brough, Arthur Leaver, Matthew Griffin and Flora Mackay have been nominated to attend the Tonbridge Tigers JRPC. 12

13 FOHC Junior Section The Junior Section is flourishing, continuing to attract more young members every season. Administration and coordination is led by the Junior Coordinator supported by the various volunteer coaches and managers. This ensures a consistent approach across all ages to create a smooth transition between different age groups. It also manages movement, when suitable and appropriate, to the senior development sides within the men's and ladies sections. Volunteers are helped by the main committee with their CPD (Continuing Personal Development), such as coaching and umpiring in line with England Hockey s best practice. The Outreach team of coaches go into schools to teach Hockey from Early years through to further education. Please contact the junior coordinator if you would like them in your school. Annual Membership fees (in line with the academic year) are currently which includes training and match fees for Sunday games. Juniors playing senior matches on Saturdays will be required to pay the relevant match fee. If you wish your child to play or become involved, please speak to either the Junior Coordinator as the first port of call, anyone on the committee or involved within the junior section. 13

15 Equipment Safety is paramount when enjoying sport safely. All members must wear the following equipment:- Outfield players Gum shields Shin pads Junior members can be provided with sticks at training sessions and will not be allowed to play without wearing the above safety equipment. Goalkeepers o All goalkeepers must wear all the relevant protective clothing. Keepers can be provided with equipment. 15

17 Rules of the Game Simple Rules and Helpful Tips The Ball can only be hit with the flat side of the stick. The left hand should always be above the right when dribbling, shooting or passing. Do not hold the stick cross-handed. The ball is pushed or flicked with the hands apart and the knees bent. The ball is hit with two hands placed together (left on top, right below) on the upper part of the stick (like a golf club or baseball bat). The emphasis is on pushing, not hitting. The ball cannot be played with either the feet or the hand. The ball can be dribbled by running with it on the end of the stick ("straight dribble"), or rotating the stick over the ball ("Indian Dribble"). There is no body checking in field hockey, and no stick-checking. The ball may not be raised or lifted into another player. There is no off-side rule. The goalie has specialist equipment and can use their feet and body to stop the ball, though they cannot fall on the ball or hold on to the ball. Obstruction. A player cannot obstruct if he is stationary, no matter which way he is facing; he must move into a position to obstruct and the obstructed player must be actively trying to play the ball. A player can turn away from a tackler so long as the ball is held in front, and the player moves away from the tackler. 17

Balls raised into circle, especially from corners, are usually considered dangerous. All free hits within the 23 metre area - everyone must be 5 metres away. Except when infraction is within 5 metres and defenders may stay in the D but not interfere. Ball hit off back line intentionally by defender or goalie - penalty corner. Accidental infraction by defender in circle or intentional infraction inside 23 metre line - penalty corner. Penalty corner: five defenders behind goal line; ball pushed out by attacker from a point 10 metres from post (any side), defenders can run out after ball; ball must move outside the circle and then go back inside before a shot taken. If shot is HIT it must not be higher than backboard (460mm) - if flicked it can be higher. Intentional infraction in circle or unintentional infraction preventing a sure goal, penalty stoke. Penalty stroke: time out, all players behind 23 metre line except goalie and hitter. Goalie stationary with heels on line. When umpire sees both goalie and hitter are 'ready - blows whistle. Hitter must start behind ball and must then push or flick ball - not hit. Goalie saves or ball misses net 15 metres hit. Please see website for full set of rules and updates. o 18
