2 Boys Hockey Hermantown outlasts the field in Class A title defense; Grand Rapids captures Class AA crown after long wait Hermantown found the winner s circle for a second consecutive year following a 4-3 double-overtime victory over Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake in the Class A final. The Hawks tied a state tournament record with all three of their games going to overtime. In Class AA, Grand Rapids won a title for the first time since 1980 when the tournament was played in a one-class format. The Thunderhawks defeated Moorhead 6-3 in the championship game. Class A Hermantown repeated as the Class A champion, but the Hawks went to great lengths in doing so. The Hawks were the heavy favorite entering the tournament, but after three games that required overtime, Hermantown was finally able to exhale and celebrate. And, they did so twice Senior defenseman Dylan Samberg ended one of the most dramatic tournaments in recent memory when he fired a slapshot from just inside the blue line that hooked on the inside of the far post, to give the Hawks a 4-3 victory in double overtime over Monticello/ Annandale/Maple Lake. Samberg s game-winner with 20 seconds remaining in the second extra session gave the Hawks (29-1-1) their second consecutive championship and third since From , Hermantown was the Class A runner-up. The Hawks thought they had clinched the championship five minutes earlier when junior center Tyler Watkins scored what appeared to be his third goal of the game. But the celebration amid scattered equipment ended when the goal was disallowed because of interference on Moose junior goalie Tyler Klatt. Klatt made 52 saves, including 17 in the two overtime sessions. Despite being outshot by a wide margin, the Moose not only survived, but held a 3-1 lead early in the third period in a game that was developing into a Cinderella story. Senior forward Nick Zwack had a goal and an assist for the Moose (23-7-1) and senior defender Charlie Voller had two assists. Hermantown was the fifth team to play three overtime games in the same tournament, but the first to win all three games. Hermantown advanced to the champion - ship game for the eighth consecutive season following a 6-5 overtime victory over St. Cloud Cathedral in the semifinals. The Hawks scored four unanswered goals on a spree that began late in the second period and carried through to senior center Ryan Sandelin s fourth goal of the game just 22 seconds before the first overtime session was set to expire. In the game, St. Cloud Cathedral and Hermantown tied a single-game state tournament record for most shots on goal in a period with 34. In the third period, Hermantown had 25 and St. Cloud Cathedral had nine. The Hawks and Crusaders also tied a record for saves in a period by two teams with 32. In the third period, St Cloud Cathedral made 23 saves and Hermantown nine. Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake needed similar dramatics to advance to the state championship game for the first time in its program s history. Senior forward Nick Zwack snapped a 2-all tie with three seconds remaining in regulation time to give the Moose a 3-2 semi - final victory over Northfield. The goal was Zwack s third of the tournament and 30th of the season. It also completed the Moose s rally from what had been a two-goal deficit early in the second period. St. Cloud Cathedral captured the thirdplace trophy following a 2-1 victory over Northfield. Ninth-grade forward Nate Warner scored what proved to be the winner with 7:52 left in the third period. In the closing minutes, Northfield pulled senior goalie Ryan Bielenberg in search of the equalizing goal, but the Crusaders preserved the victory. Northfield opened the scoring on a goal by senior forward Nick Kvernmo at 6:20 of the first period, but St. Cloud Cathedral responded three minutes later on a goal from senior forward Jake Van Halbeck. Delano finished with two victories in the consolation round, including a 6-3 win over East Grand Forks in the final. Senior forward John Keranen scored two second-period goals to spark the Tigers, who were outshot Senior forward Brian Halonen also had two goals, including a tally early in the third period that gave the Tigers a 4-0 advantage. He also contributed two assists. Senior Ben Meyers had a goal and three assists. East Grand Forks scored three unanswered goals in the third period to pull to within 4-3 with 3:17 remaining after a goal from junior defenseman Casey Kallock. But the Tigers answered less than a minute later with a goal from Meyers. That season, the Thunderhawks lost to Roseau 5-1. In its return, Grand Rapids didn t squander the opportunity to end a long state championship drought. The Thunderhawks used a three-game upset binge to win a state championship for the fourth time. The spree was completed following a 6-3 victory over Moorhead in the title game. Junior forward Gavin Hain fueled Grand Rapids (23-7-1) with three goals in helping the Thunderhawks add titles to ones won in 1975, 76 and 80. Hain s final goal of the game gave Grand Rapids a 4-0 advantage with 5:02 remaining in the second period. But the Spuds (24-4-3) fired right back, scoring two goals in less than a minute to cut the margin in half heading into the final 17 minutes. Junior forward Carter Randklev scored with 1:15 left in the second period and junior forward Jack Stetz answered 59 seconds later. But the Thunderhawks added some breathing room with 9:52 left in regulation when senior forward Micah Miller fired a wrist shot from in front that sailed past Moorhead junior goalie Lance Leonard. Moorhead inched closer again, to within 5-3, on a goal from senior forward Jacob Holtgrewe. Grand Rapids secured the championship on an empty-net goal from junior forward Blake McLaughlin, his second tally of the game. The Thunderhawks upset top-seeded Eden Prairie 3-2 to advance to the championship game. Grand Rapids senior forward Connor Stefan scored the winning goal when he beat the Eagle s senior goalie Nick Wiencek at 7:56 of the final period. It was a fast-paced game featuring 77 shots on goal, 49 of them by the Eagles. The real hero of the game for the Thunderhawk s was junior goaltender Zach Stejskal who made 47 saves, 24 of them in the final period as Eden Prairie pressed hard for the equalizer. During the game, the teams tied for a tournament record of 32 combined saves in a period. That equaled the same mark between Hermantown and St. Cloud Cathedral recorded earlier in the day. Grand Rapids had 24 saves and Eden Prairie, eight. Moorhead posted a 3-2 victory over Lakeville South to earn a berth in the title game for the first time since Spuds sophomore forward Kyler Kleven scored the winner with a wrist shot that sailed past Cougars junior goalie Isaiah DiLaura with just more than four minutes elapsed in the third period. Lakeville South pulled to within 3-2 on a goal from senior defender Joshua Ess, but the Spuds escaped with the win. Overtime was needed to determine the third-place victor. Senior forward Nolan Sullivan scored with 1 minute, 5 seconds remaining in the extra session to lift Eden Prairie to a 3-2 victory over Lakeville South. The Eagles fired 48 shots at Lakeville South junior goalie Isaiah DiLaura. Sullivan scored two goals, including a late power-play goal in the third period that temporarily gave the Eagles a 2-1 advantage. Nearly three minutes later, the Cougars got the equalizer from senior forward Bradley Goliant with 2:01 remaining in regulation. St. Thomas Academy of Mendota Heights finished its season with two victories in the season s final two days. Senior forward Willie Reim scored two goals and junior forward Ray Christy had a goal and two assists to spark the Cadets to a 5-0 victory over Wayzata in the consolation final. The Cadets stretched their lead to 3-0 late in the second period on Reim s second goal Continued on page Boys Hockey YEARBOOK & RECORD BOOK Minnesota State High School League

Most of the schools were in the northern part of the state and in the Twin Cities area. Inter-school games were very limited in number, and coaching was done in most schools by male faculty members who had hockey experience or by individuals in the community who had a special interest and training in the sport. The state hockey tournament was conceived by the late Gene Aldrich, St. Paul athletic director who thought it was time for an event of its kind because St. Paul was drawing many fans for its games. With the enthusiastic approval of the Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors and backing for expenses from the late Elmer Englebert, Aldrich went ahead with planning the details for the first tournament. The event produced sufficient revenue to pay expenses and leave a modest balance. In 1945 the Minnesota State High School League, in cooperation with interested citizens in St. Paul, offered the schools an opportunity to participate in the first State High School Hockey Tournament. It marked the very first state-sponsored high school hockey tournament in the United States. There were 26 high schools registered for the sport at the time and Eveleth s Golden Bears went home with the first of its five state championships. The first field including Thief River Falls, White Bear Lake, St. Cloud, Staples, Rochester, St. Paul Washington, and Granite Falls played before a total of 8,434 spectators. The first-round games during the initial tournament produced many lopsided scores, but the championship affair between Eveleth and Thief River Falls (Eveleth won 4-3) was a fine exhibition of skills and abilities which today are expected of Minnesota high school hockey players. The first tournament proved the merits of this activity for high school competition, and the next year the Minnesota State High School League took full control of the tournament series and assumed complete responsibility for its finances. By 1947, attendance had more than doubled. It reached the 30,000 plateau in 1956, topped 40,000 in 1961, and leveled off at the three-day auditorium capacity of 46,000 its last three years in the St. Paul Auditorium. For 23 years the tournament was conducted in the Auditorium before leaving in 1969 for the more spacious Met Center in Bloomington. At the bigger Met Center, attendance nearly doubled. In 1976 the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament returned to the city where it had been groomed 31 years earlier. The tournament site became the St. Paul Civic Center Arena, a sports venue with a 15,706 seating capacity for hockey and which was adjacent to the Auditorium where the tournament was nursed through its infancy. The event returned to St. Paul as the biggest high school hockey tournament in the nation. In 1985 an all-time attendance mark of 103,096 was established at the St. Paul Civic Center Arena. From this meager beginning, high school hockey has grown in programs throughout the state by leaps and bounds. There were 146 high school teams which participated during The rapid development of indoor facilities, improved coaching in schools, and development of youth programs have all been contributing factors. In 1992 the first two-tier Minnesota State High School Tournament was conducted. Following the recommendations of the state s high school hockey coaches association, the Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors established a two-year experiment of conducting the hockey tournament in two tiers. Instead of dividing the participating schools based on enrollment, as is the case with all other activities, the coaches suggested the division be based on performance and ability. Thus, following the regular season, coaches in each section ranked all the teams based on their season performance. The top-eight teams were placed in Tier I to play off to send a representative to the state tournament. The remaining teams then played off to determine the Tier II representative to the tournament. The expansion of the tournament required an additional day of playing time, so the Tier II teams played their quarterfinal games at the St. Paul Civic Center on Wednesday. The Tier I teams played their quarterfinals on Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, the Tier II tournament concluded its schedule at Target Center in Minneapolis. It was the first time hockey had been played at the arena which is home to the NBA s Minnesota Timberwolves. The Tier I tournament was concluded at the Civic Center. In 1994, the tournament was reformatted once again. The League s Board of Directors chose to classify participating schools by enrollment, as it is for every other activity, instead of by performance. The change was reviewed and extended after a two-year experiment. More than 23,000 fans paid to watch the Class A schools, while nearly 83,000 fans paid to watch the Class AA schools. In 1999 and 2000 the championship round games for both classes were played at Target Center. In 2001 the tournament returned to St. Paul and the new, which is the home of the Minnesota Wild NHL hockey team. The new arena has a seating capacity of 18,539. In 2008, a new attendance record was set when 129,643 fans attended the four-day tournament. 232 Boys Hockey YEARBOOK & RECORD BOOK Minnesota State High School League
