1 BOYS' HOCKEY Blaine, Breck School win first titles; Sauk Rapids-Rice, Rochester Lourdes make first tournament appearances Blaine and Breck School of Golden Valley both emerged as first-time champions at the 2000 State Boys Hockey Tournament. Blaine, which won Class A consolation honors in 1999, was making its second consecutive and fourth overall appearance. Breck School was also making its fourth overall appearance, but its first since The 2000 tournament was the second of two that was played at Target Center in Minneapolis while construction was being completed on the new Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The tournament will move back to St. Paul in Class A Some close calls and a lot of skill contributed to Breck s 3-2 championship victory over No. 1 Warroad. The Mustangs, who were ranked No. 2 in the Class A bracket, won their first title on a goal from Joe Adams with nine seconds remaining in the second period. Breck ended the season with a season record, and Warroad finished at Benilde-St. Margaret s of St. Louis Park, which won the title in 1999, did not qualify for the 2000 tournament. Breck s Josh Haller scored the first goal of the game at 8:24 of the first period. With 45 seconds left in the period, the Mustangs Jake Brenk hit a post on the Warroad net and narrowly missed the chance to put Breck up 2-0. That shot served as motivation for the Warriors, as 18 seconds later Warroad s Tony Selvog scored on a shot that also appeared to hit a post after going through Breck goalie John Curry s legs. In the second period, Brenk redeemed his missed shot when he scored on a 15-shot from a tough angle. Seconds before the period ended, Joe Adams put the Mustangs up 3-1 after C.J. Nibbe found him on his right wing. Warroad goalie Brian McFarlane was focused on Nibbe, who passed to Joe Adams across the top of the crease at the last possible moment. McFarlane had already dropped to cut off Nibbe, so all Adams had to do was raise the puck over him. Warroad kept the pressure on, and after having two goals disallowed in the second period one for a dislodged net, and one for a man in the crease - the Warriors pulled within 3-2 when Nick Marvin scored on a slap shot from close range at 1:18 in the third period. Warroad came close to closing the gap in the final seconds when one shot was blocked by a defenseman and a second shot went just wide of the net. But time was not Warroad s side, and the Mustangs escaped with the narrow victory. Breck started its championship run with a 5-2 victory over Fergus Falls in the quarterfinals. Todd O Hara and Jake Brenk led the charge for the Mustangs, with O Hara scoring three goals and Brenk adding three assists. In the semifinals, the Mustangs overcame a 3-2 deficit with three goals in the third period to defeat Sauk Rapids-Rice. Jake Brenk, Adam Dunlap and Eric LaFreniere all scored goals for Breck in the final period. Warroad blanked Farmington 2-0 in its quarterfinal match-up, but found tougher competition in International Falls in the semifinals. Neither team scored until the third period when the Broncos Ryan Hilfer broke the tie at 4:18. Less than two minutes later, Warroad s Tony Selvog scored to even the game at one goal apiece. The score stayed that way, until Selvog fired a wrist shot from a sharp angle in the right circle at 2:06 in the second overtime. The puck went through a small opening between International Falls goalie Jaime Fisher and the right pipe. In other quarterfinal action, Sauk Rapids-Rice defeated Rochester Lourdes 4-3 in a battle of first-time qualifiers. John Schultz scored the game-winner for the Storm at 13:45 in the third period. International Falls defeated Hutchinson 6-0 in the final quarterfinal game. Mitch LaVern scored the first two goals for the Broncos and Brady Foughner added one goal and two assists. International Falls, which was making its 18th overall tournament appearance, hung on to defeat Sauk Rapids-Rice 4-3 in overtime to claim third-place honors. The Broncos led 3-0 entering the third period, but the Storm tied the game by scoring three goals in a span of 3:15. Charlie Schuman tapped in Mike Jensen s rebound to give the Broncos the victory at 5:17 in the first overtime. In another overtime game, Farmington beat Rochester Lourdes 2-1 for the consolation title. David Schultz scored the game-winner at 11:26 of the second overtime. Class AA In Class AA, Blaine won its first championship by defeating the perennial qualifiers from Duluth East 6-0. The Bengals, who finished as consolation champions in 1999, were making their second consecutive and fourth overall tournament appearance. Blaine ended the season with a season record, and Duluth East finished with a record of Blaine earned the title by doing the same thing they had done all season scoring goals in bunches. Matt Moore started the scoring at 6:02 of the first period. He beat his defender with a quick move and went to the short side of the goal, squeezing the puck past East goalie Dan Hoehne. Moore scored again at 12:26 when Matt Hendricks found him in front of the net for the easy tap-in. Trevor Frischmon capped the flurry at 14:30 of the first period when he put in Chad Smith s rebound. The Bengals extended their lead to five goals when Frischmon and Brandon Bochenski scored at 1:10 and 2:31, respectively, in the second period. Chad Smith scored the final goal for the Bengals at 12:30 of the second period. Blaine goalie Steve Witkowski earned the shutout with 21 saves. In semifinal play, Blaine pushed by Hastings with 4-3 victory. Matt Hendricks scored two goals for the Bengals in the first period, and Blaine was up 4-2 late in the third period. Hastings Andy Hartung scored the final goal for the Raiders at 14:55 in the third period. Blaine s victory also avenged a first-round loss to Hastings in the 1999 tournament. On the other side of the bracket, Nick Licari led Duluth East with two goals in the third period, and the Greyhounds defeated Edina 4-2. Blaine easily defeated Rochester Mayo 4-1 in quarterfinal play. Duluth East also breezed past the defending champions from Roseau in the quarterfinals. The Greyhounds scored three goals in the third period to earn the 4-1 victory. 5 Fifty-sixth state tournament played in 2000 In 1976 the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament returned to the city where it was groomed 53 years ago. The tournament site became the St. Paul Civic Center Arena, a sports venue with a 15,706 seating capacity for hockey and which is adjacent to the Auditorium where the tournament was nursed through its infancy. For 23 years the tournament was conducted in the Auditorium before leaving in 1969 for the more spacious Met Center in Bloomington. The event returned to St. Paul as the biggest high school hockey tournament in the nation. Although the first state hockey tournament was not conducted until 1945, high school hockey was played in approximately 25 schools in the 1930s. Most of the schools were in the northern part of the state and in the Twin Cities area. Inter-school games were very limited in number, and coaching was done in most schools by male faculty members who had hockey experience or by individuals in the community who had a special interest and training in the sport. In 1945 the Minnesota State High School League, in cooperation with interested citizens in St. Paul, offered the schools an opportunity to participate in the first State High School Hockey Tournament. It marked the very first state-sponsored high school hockey tournament in the United States. There were 26 high schools registered for the sport at the time and Eveleth s Golden Bears went home with the first of its five state championships. The first field - including Thief River Falls, White Bear Lake, St. Cloud, Staples, Rochester, St. Paul Washington, and Granite Falls - played before a total of 8,434 spectators. By 1947, attendance had more than doubled. It reached the 30,000 plateau in 1956, topped 40,000 in 1961, and leveled off at the three-day auditorium capacity of 46,000 its last three years in the St. Paul Auditorium. At the bigger Met Center, attendance nearly doubled. And in 1985 an alltime attendance mark of 103,096 was established at the St. Paul Civic Center Arena. The state hockey tournament was conceived by the late Gene Aldrich, St. Paul athletic director who thought it was time for an event of its kind because St. Paul was drawing many fans for its games. With the enthusiastic approval of the Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors and backing for expenses from the late Elmer Englebert, Aldrich went ahead with planning the details for the first tournament. The event produced sufficient revenue to pay expenses and leave a modest balance. The first-round games during the initial tournament produced many lopsided scores, but the championship affair between Eveleth and Thief Year Attendance , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,362 The History Total Attendance at State Boys' Hockey Tournaments , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,096 River Falls (Eveleth won 4-3) was a fine exhibition of skills and abilities which today are expected of Minnesota high school hockey players. The first tournament proved the merits of this activity for high school competition, and the next year the Minnesota State High School League took full control of the tournament series and assumed complete responsibility for its finances. From this meager beginning, high school hockey has grown in programs throughout the state by leaps and bounds. There were 146 high school teams which participated during The rapid development of indoor facilities, improved coaching in schools, and development of youth programs have all been contributing factors. In 1992 the first two-tier Minnesota State High School Tournament was conducted. Following the recommendations of the state s high school hockey coaches association, the Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors established a two-year experiment of conducting the hockey tournament in two tiers. Instead of dividing the participating schools based on enrollment, as is the case with all other activities, the coaches suggested the division be based on performance and ability. Thus, following the regular season, coaches in each section ranked all the teams based on their season performance. The top-eight teams were placed in Tier I to play off to send a representative to the state tournament. The remaining teams then played off to determine the Tier II representative to the tournament. The expansion of the tournament required an additional day of playing time, so the Tier II teams played their quarterfinal games at the St. Paul Civic Center on Wednesday. The Tier I teams played their quarterfinals on Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, the Tier II tournament concluded its schedule at Target Center in Minneapolis. It was the first time hockey had been played at the arena which is home to the NBA s Minnesota Timberwolves. The Tier I tournament was concluded at the Civic Center. In 1994, the tournament was reformatted once again. The League s Board of Directors chose to classify participating schools by enrollment, as it is for every other activity, instead of by performance. The change was reviewed and extended after a two-year experiment. More than 23,000 fans paid to watch the Class A schools, while nearly 83,000 fans paid to watch the Class AA schools. In 2000 the championship round games for both classes were played at Target Center. In the third-place game, Hastings defeated Edina 4-3 in double overtime. Hastings, which earned runner-up honors in 1999, led 2-1 at the end of the first period. The Raiders held that lead until Edina s Scott Strand tied the score at 4:00 in the third period. Less than four minutes later, John Davis gave the Hornets a 3-2 edge. Hastings Cody Swanson tied the game on a power-play goal at 9:41. Travis Kieffer scored the game-winner for the Hornets at 5:14 in the second overtime. Edina goalie Chris Kapsen finished the game with 31 saves. The Raiders goalie, Matt Klein, stopped 42 shots. Roseau claimed the consolation championship with a 4-1 victory over Rochester Mayo. David Klema led the Rams with two goals and one assist. Total tournament attendance was 106,918. The tournament was played March 8-11 at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
