2 Baseball Heritage Christian Academy, Maple Lake, Mahtomedi capture first championships; Stillwater Area wins third title Four baseball teams were crowned champions during the 2018 MSHSL Prep Championship Series. Heritage Christian Academy of Maple Grove captured its first title in its first appearance in Class A, while Stillwater Area won its second championship in Class AAAA. Maple Lake improved on last year s third-place showing to capture its first crown in Class AA, and Mahtomedi won its first championship in Class AAA. Class A Heritage Christian Academy, the top seed in the Class A field, rode the bat and arm of senior Seth Halvorsen to an 8-0 victory over No. 2-seeded Sleepy Eye (18-6) in the title game. Just more than a week after being drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 30th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, Halvorsen became the fifth player in MSHSL history to hit two home runs in a state tournament game. He was the winning pitcher after striking out 16 in the seveninning shutout, and he also struck out the final six batters that he faced. Halvorsen was 3-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and two home runs to power the Eagles (23-3). He wasted no time giving himself run support, putting the first pitch he saw into the left field bleachers. Sleepy Eye loaded the bases in the first inning, but its second out was recorded on an errant pitch with junior Taylor Brodersen making the toss to Halvorsen for the tag. He struck out the final batter of the inning as Sleepy Eye left runners on second and third with a chance to take the game s first lead. Halvorsen also stranded a Sleepy Eye runner on third base in the second inning after junior Jacob Berg led off with a double down the left field line. Berg moved to third on a sacrifice bunt but Halvorsen struck out the next two batters to erase the threat. He only allowed a runner into scoring position one more time in the game, a runner on second with one out in the fourth inning. But, again, he worked his way out with back-to-back strikeouts. The Eagles extended their lead to 3-0 in the second inning when Brodersen hit a tworun double to left field. Batting behind Halvorsen, Brodersen went 2-for-4 with three RBI, as the two players combined to drive in seven runs from the top of the lineup. Sleepy Eye senior Carter Brinkman went 2-for-3 to lead his club from the third spot in the order. Senior Kyle Domeier took the loss for Sleepy Eye as he worked the first three innings before senior Zach Haala relieved him for the final three. In the third-place game, the defending champions from Parkers Prairie rebounded to record a 13-4 victory over South Ridge of Culver. Parkers Prairie scored nine runs on six hits as it batted around in the decisive seventh inning. In his second at-bat of the inning, senior Travis Yohnke drilled a threerun double to deep left field. He finished 2- for-3, as did senior Austin Koep. Junior Joey Janke was 1-for-3 with two RBI for South Ridge. Senior Nick Altermatt hit a home run in the ninth inning to lift Wabasso to a 7-6 victory in nine innings over Hinckley-Finlayson in the consolation final. Heritage Christian Academy earned a berth in the championship game following a 7-4 victory over Parkers Prairie in the semifinals. The Eagles dashed to a seven-run advantage with three outs separating them from a championship appearance, but Parkers Prairie staged a rally in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore TJ Guggenberger was 3-for-3 for the Eagles while senior Seth Halvorsen and sophomore Jonny Flynn were both 2-for- 3. Flynn had two runs batted in on a single in a four-run second inning. Senior Colton Booker was 2-for-3 with two RBI for Parkers Prairie. Sleepy Eye completed the championship billing with a 4-1 semifinal victory over South Ridge. The Indians manufactured three runs in a decisive third inning by piecing together four hits and taking advantage of an error. Carter Brinkman, who went 2-for-3, opened the scoring for the Indians with an RBI double. Sleepy Eye s Jacob Berg surrendered two hits, walked two and struck out 14 in coming within one out of a complete game. Joey Janke and sophomore pitcher Mason Lane each had one hit for South Ridge. Continued on page 70 Seth Halvorsen of Heritage Christian Academy dominated the Class A championship game between the Eagles and Sleepy Eye. His game-winning performance included hitting two home runs and striking out 16 batters in the 8-0 victory. This was the first title for the Eagles in their first tournament appearance. After falling behind 3-1 after two innings, the Irish rallied with a four-run third inning and a three-run fourth for an 8-3 lead. Starting pitcher Grant Mergen, a senior, hit the go-ahead two-run single to right center in the third inning and went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. He also went the distance on the hill, allowing four runs with five strikeouts across seven innings. Maple Lake junior Ben Goelz went 3-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base, and senior Cole Trager was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Marshall School (23-5) built the early lead with a run in the first on junior Ben Pedersen s two-out RBI single up the middle. The Hilltoppers added two more unearned runs in the second inning before Mergen settled in and retired eight in a row in the middle innings. Marshall School junior Maddux Baggs went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs while junior Peter Hansen also went 2-for-3 with a double and sacrifice bunt. Hansen relieved junior Carter Sullivan in the third inning and pitched the final five frames. He allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks in a strong relief effort. This was the first championship for Maple Lake. The Irish placed third in 2017 after defeating Marshall School 7-6. In the third-place game, Caledonia defeated Jordan 4-2. Junior Payton Schott, senior Mason Staggemeyer, senior Andrew Goergen, and junior Kyle Cavanaugh all scored runs for the Warriors. Schott was the pitcher of record for Caledonia with one hit and one run allowed in 4.2 innings of work. Junior Tyler Wiebke was credited with the save as he allowed just three hits in the final 2.1 innings. Junior Ryan Friedges paced Jordan at the plate with two hits and one run. The defending champions from Minnehaha Academy of Minneapolis defeated Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 7-3 to claim consolation honors. Minnehaha Academy sophomore Will Wamre pitched an impressive complete-game victory that included seven strikeouts and four hits over 7.0 innings. Junior Bennett Theisen led the way for the Redhawks with two hits and three RBI. Senior Ethan Giesinger paced Dilworth- Glyndon-Fleton with one hit and two RBI in the game. Marshall School advanced to the championship game with an 6-3 victory over Caledonia. The Warriors tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom on the third inning, but Marshall School added two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to clinch the victory. Junior Brett Benson gained the win in relief for Marshall School. He pitched 4.0 innings with two hits, no runs and one strikeout. Carter Sullivan paced Marshall School at the plate with three hits and one RBI. Juniors Tate Meiners and Kyle Cavanaugh had two hits apiece for Caledonia. Maple Lake completed the championship pairing with a 4-3 victory over Jordan in the other semifinal. The Irish rallied with three runs in the sixth inning to gain the winning edge after Jordan opened the game with two runs in the second inning. Grant Mergen led Maple Lake with three hits and Cole Trager added two more. Junior Mitch Hoistad was the winning pitcher with 5.0 innings of relief work that included three hits allowed and one strikeout. Hoistad also added two hits and one RBI for the Irish. Jordan was led by junior Ryan Friedges with two hits and one RBI. Class AAA Top-seeded Mahtomedi earned its first championship following a 5-1 victory over No. 2-seeded Rocori of Cold Spring (22-6). The Zephyrs (20-4) closed their season on a 10-game winning streak. Senior pitcher Austin Jerylo went the distance with six hits, allowing just one run with no walks and four strikeouts. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate, driving in the final run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, it was Mahtomedi senior Sam Lapadat who provided the spark, lacing an RBI triple into the right field corner with one out. The Spartan offense produced four doubles with junior Brady Klehr providing the lone two-hit game, going 2-for-3 with one of the team s doubles. Rocori s senior pitcher Mason Primus was solid in the middle innings, retiring 10- straight Zephyrs between the second and fifth innings. He took the complete-game loss, allowing five runs in 6.0 innings with an efficient 71-pitch appearance. Continued on page Baseball YEARBOOK & RECORD BOOK Minnesota State High School League

The Eagles exploded in the fourth inning with four runs on five hits. Alexandria Area junior Luke Levasseur then came in to relieve sophomore Matthew Carlsen in the fifth inning, and he too gave up four runs on four hits. Senior pitcher Andrew Peters limited the Cardinals to just three hits in a completegame performance. He struck out two and allowed three walks. In the consolation final, Red Wing defeated Willmar 9-6. Senior pitcher Seth Yeatman went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI for the Wingers. In the top of the seventh, Red Wing batted around for the second time on the day, sending 10 to the plate. Senior Grant Rolen produced the big hit, a two-run triple to the right centerfield gap. Willmar senior Jack Baumgart had a strong day, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Senior Caleb Ditmarson was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Mahtomedi earned a spot in the title game with a 1-0 victory over Alexandria Area in the first semifinal. Mahtomedi scratched out its only run in the top of the seventh inning when senior Brandon Anderson, pinch-running for junior Andrew Murphy who had singled to open the inning, crossed the plate on a passed ball. Rocori completed the championship pairing with a 5-0 victory over New Ulm in the second semifinal. Senior pitcher Brandon Gill of Rocori threw a complete game shutout with five hits, five strikeouts, and three walks. Gill pitched well but Rocori was also the beneficiary of five Eagle errors in the game, including four in the third inning when the Spartans scored twice to extend their lead to 3-0. Senior Luke Scheid went five innings for the Eagles and took the loss, yielding six hits and five runs. Class AAAA No. 2 seed Stillwater Area (24-3) used a 15-strikeout performance from junior pitcher Andrew Gilbert in a 4-0 win over top-seeded Minnetonka (22-5) in the Class AAAA championship game. The game was played on Monday afternoon due to a four hour and 20 minute rain delay on Saturday that pushed back the start of the Class A, AA and AAA championship games. The second attempt also featured a delay, but it was a more manageable 22-minute setback. The title is the second for the Ponies in eight state tournament appearances and extends their winning streak to 20 games to end the season. They won their first championship in Gilbert struck out the first six batters of the game and he finished with 15 strikeouts overall. He allowed three hits and two walks in the shutout victory. Due to the postponement, Gilbert was able to start a pair of games in the tournament, racking up 25 strikeouts across 13.2 innings, allowing just two runs. The Ponies broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs. Although senior Matthew McGinley was 0- for-2, he factored into both runs in the inning. First, he beat out a double-play for an RBI fielder s choice grounder to short, and then he baited a failed pickoff attempt at first base with his baserunning tactics, allowing sophomore Jonathan Koehn to score from third. Stillwater Area senior Mason Schwerzler was 2-for-3 with a run and Koehn was 0-for- 2 but scored a pair of runs. Senior Mason Nadolney had a strong outing on the mound for Minnetonka, allowing two runs on just three hits and a walk with three strikeouts in five innings. He needed only 63 pitches in an efficient performance. Senior Jack Hanson was 2-for-3 for the Skippers, including the game s only extra base hit, a lead-off double to left center in the fifth inning. St. Michael-Albertville defeated Blaine 9-0 to capture third-place honors. Senior Paxton Thompson had two hits and three RBI and senior Marcus Krupke drove in two runs for the Knights. Krupke got things rolling with a two-rbi double in the top of the first inning. Thompson drove in three with a basesloaded double as part of a four-run second frame. Sophomore Kolby Gartner scattered three hits over the first six innings to earn the pitching victory. In the consolation final, Lakeville North raced to an 8-2 victory over Wayzata. The Panthers tallied three runs in each of the first two innings to gain the early 6-1 advantage. Junior Gavin Baker and seniors Collin Denk and Braden Walsh had two RBI apiece for Lakeville North. Seniors Nicholas Kaye and Charles Engdahl accounted for Wayzata s two RBI. Continued on page 77 Minnesota State High School League YEARBOOK & RECORD BOOK Baseball 73
