2 Zumbrota-Mazeppa repeats as Class AA champion; Three schools from Section 1 capture state titles Zumbrota-Mazeppa was the only team to successfully defended its title during the 2017 State Softball Tournament. Section 1, in the southeast region of Minnesota, produced three state champions: Zumbrota- Mazeppa (Class AA), Winona (Class AAA) and Farmington (Class AAAA). New York Mills, representing Section 6, was the Class A champion. Class A New York Mills ended a championship drought of nearly four decades after recording an 8-4 victory over Edgerton/SW Minnesota Christian in the championship game. Not only did the No. 2-seeded Eagles knock off the defending Class A champion, but they also won the school s first state championship since 1979 when Minnesota girls basketball pioneer Janet Karvonen led the school to the third of its three consecutive girls basketball championships. The Eagles (25-2) snapped a 1-all deadlock with four runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to build an 8-1 advantage. Junior pitcher Rhiana Roberts and sophomore infielder Sierra Gerber had two runs batted in each for the Eagles. Roberts was also the winner in the circle, going seven innings and striking out six. Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian finished the season In the third-place game, Sleepy Eye St. Mary s wasted little time, scoring nine runs in the first inning en route to a 15-2, five-inning victory over Hayfield. The Knights had nine hits in the opening inning to produce the nine runs. Junior shortstop Jody Hansen was 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs for Sleepy Eye St. Mary s. Kimball Area scored the game s first six runs en route to a 9-3 victory over Pillager in the consolation final. Sophomore infielder Rachel Utecht powered the Cubs, driving in three runs on a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning. Senior pitcher Emily Utecht recorded the victory, striking out 10 in five innings. Edgerton/SW Minnesota Christian earned a berth in the championship game with a 10-9 victory over Hayfield. The Flying Dutchmen raced to a 9-1 lead after four innings before hanging on for the victory. Senior first baseman Jordyn Smidt was 4-for-4 with three runs scored for Edgerton/SW Minnesota Christian. Junior shortstop Carrie Rutledge was for 4-for-4 for Hayfield, Girls Softball which scored eight runs in the fifth inning to forge a 9-all tie. In the final game of the tournament s first day, New York Mills recorded a 7-6 semifinal victory over Sleepy Eye St. Mary s. The Eagles snapped a 6-all tie with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rhiana Roberts led New York Mills with two RBIs. She also pitched all seven innings for the Eagles, striking out four and walking four. Class AA Zumbrota-Mazeppa wasn t favored to repeat as the Class AA champion. The Cougars received the No. 2 seed in the tournament behind undefeated Maple Lake. When both advanced to the title game, Zumbrota-Mazeppa would either repeat as champion or Maple Lake would affirm its top ranking with a championship and a perfect season. Zumbrota-Mazeppa (24-6) made an impact early with three unearned runs in the third inning on the way to a 4-1 victory over the Irish (26-1). Junior pitcher Lyndsey Quam held a powerful Maple Lake lineup in check by scattering seven hits. Senior first baseman Tara Matuska had two RBIs to spark the Cougars. In the third-place game, Dilworth- Glyndon-Felton pounded out 14 hits in its 9-2 victory over Esko. Five different Rebels players had at least two hits. Junior second baseman Maria Pake had three hits and eighth-grade designated hitter Maria Watt had three RBIs. In the consolation final, Pipestone Area cruised to a 12-0 victory over Albany. Senior third baseman Taylor Nesvold, junior infielder Hannah Berg, and junior pitcher Shelby Bloemendaal each had two runs batted in. Bloemendaal also gave up just three hits. Zumbrota-Mazeppa plowed into the championship game following a 9-4 victory over Esko in the semifinals. Senior center fielder Natalie Majerus was 4-for-4 and Lyndsey Quam scattered three hits and struck out 11 for the Cougars. In the other championship semifinal, Maple Lake posted a 9-0 victory over Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton. Junior pitcher Calla Maki allowed just one hit. It also erased sour memories over the past two years when Winona has finished as state runner-up in three different activities. The Winona girls basketball team was the Class AAA runner-up the past two seasons and the football team was the Prep Bowl runner-up last November. Last spring, the softball team was runner-up to Mankato West. But in 2017, hours before members of the softball team joined their senior classmates for commencement exercises, the Winhawks (24-3) emerged as state champions. Senior infielder Katie Block was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and senior pitcher Ashton Hoeppner struck out 14 for the Winhawks. Hoeppner finished the three-game state tournament with 40 strikeouts. Senior infielder Jordyn Thomas had a two-run homer for Hermantown (21-5). The Hawks, making their 23rd state tournament appearance, finished as runner-up for the fifth time. In the third-place game, senior pitcher Erin Poepping allowed just one unearned run in sending Totino-Grace of Fridley to an 8-1 victory over Mankato West. Sophomore infielder Brianna Glynn was 2-for-3 with two RBIs to spark the Eagles offensively. Mankato West scratched out a run in the first, but Totino-Grace answered quickly. The lead expanded with two runs in the second inning and six more in the third. In the consolation final, senior second baseman Abigail Gregor had two RBIs to lead Waconia to a 4-2 victory over Thief River Falls. Waconia used three runs on four hits in the sixth inning to break away. Gregor knocked in two of those runs with a triple. In the championship semifinals, Hermantown earned a shot at its third state championship following a 6-5 victory over Mankato West. Senior infielder Jordyn Thomas supplied most of the offense going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, all on a grand slam to right centerfield. In the other semifinal, Winona used a 5-0 victory over Totino-Grace to earn a spot in the championship game for the second consecutive season. Ashton Hoeppner threw seven scoreless innings for the victory. Katie Block and senior catcher Justine Schultz had three hits each for the Winhawks. Class AAAA A dandy pitchers duel came to a sudden halt when junior third baseman Emma Frost hit a solo walk-off home run to left center field in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Farmington a 1-0 victory over Anoka in the Class AAAA championship game. Frost s home run capped a three-game upset binge by the Tigers (24-3), who began the state tournament as the No. 5 seed. In making its fifth state tournament appearance, Farmington defeated No. 4 Park of Cottage Grove in the quarterfinals before upsetting top-seeded and defending champion Chanhassen in the semifinals. Anoka (25-2) was the No. 2 seed. Farmington senior pitcher Maddie Muelken earned the complete-game shutout and had two hits at the plate. She threw 17 consecutive scoreless innings to end the tournament. In the championship game, she struck out two, scattered nine hits, and received timely defense behind her. Anoka senior pitcher Amber Elliott stuck out 17 in 9 2/3 innings of work in the championship game. In the three-game tournament, she allowed two runs in 26 2/3 innings, struck out 41 and walked just four. Continued on page Girls Softball YEARBOOK & RECORD BOOK Minnesota State High School League

Winona vs. Totino-Grace, Fridley Ashton Hoeppner of Winona won 5-0 with 13 strikeouts and 1 walk REVIEW (Continued from page 312) Chanhassen bounced back to record a 1-0 victory over Woodbury in the third-place game. Senior second baseman Kali O Keefe supplied all the offense the Storm would need with a first-inning home run. Senior pitchers Marybeth Olson and Taylor Manno held Woodbury to just two hits. In the consolation final, Buffalo scored early and then survived a late charge by Maple Grove to record a 6-4 victory. The game featured 26 hits. Sophomore outfielder Jordan Zrust was 4-for-4 for the Bison and junior right fielder Codi Zwack was 3-for-4. In the championship semifinals, Farmington dashed Chanhassen s repeat hopes with a 2-0 victory. The Tigers opened a 1-0 lead in the first inning and Emma Frost hit a solo home run in the third to give the Tigers all the run support Maddie Muelken would need. Muelken scattered four hits and struck out three. The championship pairing was complete when Anoka outlasted Woodbury for a 1-0 victory in 13 innings. Amber Elliott, who threw all 13 innings and struck out 13, sliced an RBI single to right field to score junior Kaitlyn Backman from third base. Backman led off the inning with a single and then was bunted over to second. She advanced to third on an illegal pitch. The 2017 State Softball Tournament was played June 8-9 at Caswell Park in North Mankato. Paid attendance was 10,735. Minnesota State High School League YEARBOOK & RECORD BOOK Girls Softball 315
