2 Wrestling Zumbrota-Mazeppa, Kasson-Mantorville, Apple Valley capture team championships Apple Valley won the Class AAA team championship for a state-record 12th consecutive season and 25th time overall. Kasson-Mantorville rolled to a successful title defense in Class AA, and Zumbrota-Mazeppa used an upset binge to capture the Class A crown. Two days of an individual state tournament produced 42 champions. Senior Brent Jones of Shakopee and senior Brady Berge of Kasson-Mantorville joined an elite group of 18 Minnesota high school wrestlers to win four individual state championships. Class A Zumbrota-Mazeppa began the Class A portion of the state tournament as the fourth seed, but ousted two higher-seeded teams en route to capturing a title for the first time in program history. The Cougars won their final four weights against No. 2-seeded Pierz to complete their mini-upset binge with a victory. Junior Hayden Voxland began the surge with a decision at 182 pounds. That was followed by decisions from junior Caden Steffen (195), sophomore Jacob Bennett (220), and junior Jarret Haglund (heavyweight). This was the ninth appearance for Zumbrota-Mazeppa. The Cougars made their last appearance in Pierz advanced to the championship dual with a victory over West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville in the semifinals, winning four of the final five matches. Senior 182-pounder Matt Kummet clinched the victory with a 9-1 major decision over junior Levi Larkin. Sophomore Carson Huls and senior Troy Fischer followed with victories at 195 and heavyweight, respectively. Zumbrota-Mazeppa completed the championship match-up with a upset victory over No. 1 Frazee in the other semifinal. The Cougars wrapped up the victory with a pin from junior Caden Steffen at 195 and a major decision by sophomore Jacob Bennett at 220. Top-seeded Frazee rebounded to claim the third-place trophy with a victory over West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville. The Hornets opened what had been a tight dual with 20 unanswered points in the final four weight classes. In the consolation final, Kenyon- Wanamingo recorded a victory over Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. Kenyon- Wanamingo, the No. 5 seed to begin the tournament, broke open what had been a lead with victories in the final three weights. Junior Logan Quam opened the spree with a 9-2 decision at 195 pounds, and sophomores Kaya Lindell and Jesse Jackson followed with pins at 220 and heavyweight, respectively. During the individual tournament, there were four returning champions that won a gold medal for the second consecutive season. They were: Kenyon-Wanamingo sophomore Jeron Matson (113), Pipestone Area junior Hunter Burnett (120), Pipestone Area junior Michael Suda (126), and Goodhue senior Bailee O Reilly (160). Class AA For a second consecutive season, Kasson- Mantorville barged into the championship match and emerged with a title. The KoMets completed their season undefeated by overwhelming perennial state champion Simley of Inver Grove Heights in the title match. Kasson-Mantorville won three of the first five matches to build a slim 10-9 lead. But starting at 138 pounds, the KoMets rattled off 31 unanswered points over the next six weights. During the spree, Kasson-Mantorville had three pins and two technical falls. It was the third state championship for top-seeded Kasson-Mantorville; the KoMets won their first in Kasson-Mantorville was making its second consecutive appearance and 10th overall. This was the second time Kasson- Mantorville and Simley met during the season. The KoMets defeated the Spartans on Jan. 28. Simley earned its way into a championship match for the 18th time in program history with a victory over Scott West, a co-op between Belle Plaine, Jordan, and Holy Family Academy of Belle Plaine. Simley won five of the first eight matches of the dual, and then four of the final five to win in convincing fashion. Senior Zach Moon, sophomore Daniel Kerkvliet, and junior Luke Zaiser closed out the dual with consecutive victories in the upper weights. Kasson-Mantorville earned a spot in the semifinals for the second year in a row by racing to a 54-7 victory over Foley. The KoMets took charge from the start, winning 12 of the dual s 14 matches. Eight of the KoMet s victories brought bonus points. The Panthers, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, won five of the first seven matches to build a 20-6 lead. That margin expanded to following an 11-0 major decision from sophomore Calvin Menke at 220 pounds. In the consolation final, Perham raced to a 60-3 victory over Grand Rapids. The Yellowjackets won 13 of the 14 matches to end their season. During the individual tournament, senior Brady Berge of Kasson-Mantorville received a standing ovation after defeating Collin Steuber, a junior from Fairmont/Martin County West, in the Class AA 160 championship. Berge, who won his fourth title and finished his season 45-0, acknowledged the crowd with a salute. The Penn State recruit missed an opportunity to be a fivetime champion after breaking his leg in the state semifinals in Delano senior Tucker Sjomeling captured his third individual championship following a 9-1 major decision over Payton Anderson, a ninth-grader from Fairmont/Martin County West, in the 132-pound title match. Class AAA Apple Valley added to the richest wrestling legacy in Minnesota high school history with a 25th championship in 36 state tournament appearances. But unlike their two early matches in the tournament, when the Eagles cruised to victories, they needed some late power to finish off the Anoka Tornadoes. Senior Tanyi Besong lifted Apple Valley into a 24-all tie following a 12-1 major decision over junior Evan DeChene at 220 pounds. Moments later, junior Gable Steveson, the top-ranked heavyweight in the country, pinned junior Brandon Frankfurth 22 seconds into the match to give the Eagles yet another championship. It was Apple Valley s second victory over Anoka during the wrestling season. The previous victory was a win on Dec. 31 at the Clash Duals in Rochester. Apple Valley was dominant in its first two matches of the tournament. After zipping past Minnetonka 73-3 in the quarterfinals, the Eagles were never threatened in the semifinals in posting a victory over Hastings. The Eagles won the first four weights in the semifinals to build a 21-0 lead. Gable Steveson put an exclamation point on Apple Valley s semifinal victory with a 45-second pin in the heavyweight class. In the quarterfinals, Steveson had a pin in 44 seconds. Anoka earned its chance at a rematch with Apple Valley by defeating longtime rival St. Michael-Albertville, 38-26, in the other semifinal. St. Michael-Albertville opened the dual with three consecutive victories to build a 14-0 lead. But the Tornadoes answered with five consecutive victories from 132 pounds (Scott Springer) through 160 (Jason Rollins). In between, Tyler Eischens (138), Cole Eischens (145) and Calvin Germinaro-Nahring (152) also had victories. St. Michael-Albertville bounced back from its semifinal loss to record a victory over Hastings in the third-place match. St. Michael-Albertville senior Evan Foster completed the victory with a 5-1 decision over junior Drake Guck in the heavyweight match. The three points earned for the victory snapped a 33-all tie. In the consolation final, Owatonna edged Willmar, The Huskies scored the decisive points when junior Parker Holton recorded a 5-0 decision over junior Josiah Swanson in the 195-pound match. That gave the Huskies a lead with two weights to go. The Cardinals closed with two decisions, worth three points each, for the final score. During the individual tournament, Shakopee, which spent much of the season as the top-ranked Class AAA team, produced five individual champions. Senior Brent Jones, a University of Minnesota recruit, captured his fourth individual crown with a 3-2 victory over Willmar junior Clay Carlson in the 132-pound championship match. Also winning championships for the Sabers were: junior Aaron Cashman (113), eighth-grader Carson Manville (126), junior Alex Lloyd (145), and senior Alex Crowe (152). During the individual competition, Apple Valley junior Gable Steveson punctuated a tournament of dominance by winning the heavyweight championship with a pin of Anoka junior Brandon Frankfurth in just 11 seconds in the final. Steveson recorded pins in all three of his matches during the team portion of the tournament and another four consecutive pins during the march to his third individual championship. The longest pin for Steveson was 2:52 in his semifinal victory over North of North St. Paul junior Corey Guenther.
