2 Boys Lacrosse Prior Lake claims second championship in three years The Lakers of Prior Lake won their second championship in three years after defeating Benilde-St. Margaret s of St. Louis Park 10-8 in the title game. The Lakers, who placed sixth in 2017, won their first title in Prior Lake found the back of the net in the first minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead. Goals were then traded back and forth between the Red Knights and Lakers for a score of 4-3 in favor of the Lakers at the end of the first quarter. Things remained steady for Prior Lake in the second quarter, as they scored the only two goals. Benilde-St. Margaret s regained some steam after the break and tied the game at 6-6 with goals from seniors Jerome Newhouse, Turner Wine, and Quinn Ehlen. The last quarter turned out to be a great show. Benilde-St. Margaret s took a 7-6 lead 38 seconds into the quarter, but a Lakers streak began soon after. Prior Lake tallied three consecutive goals gaining a two-goal advantage with mere minutes remaining. The Red Knights tallied their last goal at the 7:09 mark to bring the score within 9-8. Scoring leaders for Benilde-St. Margaret s were senior Jerome Newhouse with two goals and senior Quinn Ehlen with two goals and one assist. Senior Alex Rejda paced Prior Lake with five goals and junior Benjamin Jung added two goals and three assists. Minnetonka went home with the thirdplace hardware after posting a 14-7 victory over Mahtomedi. The Skippers led 8-4 at the break and added four goals in the third quarter. Junior Grant Brunsvold and sophomore Luke Tollefson scored three goals apiece for Minnetonka. In the consolation final, Wayzata defeated the defending champions from Eagan The teams combined for 12 goals in the third quarter, with Wayzata taking the lead Eagan tried to climb back into contention during the final quarter, outscoring the Trojans 4-3, but it wasn t enough to overcome the one-goal deficit. Senior Alex Sahli had a big game for Wayzata with five goals and four assists. Senior Brooks Hanson added five goals and one assist for the Trojans. Prior Lake advanced to the championship after posting a victory over Minnetonka in the semifinals. Minnetonka led 6-5 at halftime, but Prior Lake countered with four unanswered goals. Senior Bennet Holst started the comeback, followed by goals from Benjamin Jung, junior Luke Bloedow and senior John Leffler s third of the night. Leffler finished the game with four goals and Jung and Holst added two apiece. In the second semifinal, Benilde-St. Margaret s defeated Mahtomedi 9-6. The Zephyrs bounced back in the second quarter, tying the game 4-4, before the Red Knights took a 5-4 lead in the final thirty seconds of the half. Benilde-St. Margaret s ninth-grader Matthew Dowden took over from there, netting all three of his goals in the second half. Eric Weber netted two goals and added one assist for the Red Knights. The 2018 State Boys Lacrosse Tournament quarterfinals were played at Chanhassen High School on June 12. The consolation and championship semifinal rounds were played at on June 14. The consolation final and third-place games were contested at Minnetonka High School on June 16. The title game was played at on June 16. Total paid tournament attendance for both the boys and girls tournaments was 6,865. Gender-specific totals were not available as spectators were allowed in & out privileges at both venues.
