2 Girls Hockey The Blake School repeats as Class A champion; Edina captures first Class AA crown The Blake School of Minneapolis continued its Class A supremacy with a 6-2 victory over St. Paul United in a rematch of the 2016 title game. This was a record-setting seventh title for the Bears. In addition to the past two years, they also won in 2003, 07, 09, 13, and 14. Edina, the top-seeded team in the Class AA field, proved worthy of that label by defeating Blaine 4-0 in the Class AA championship game. This was the first championship for the Hornets. Class A The Blake School was in seventh heaven after seeing its recent dominance in Class A girls hockey continue. The Bears cruised to a 6-2 victory over St. Paul United in the championship game to capture their state-record seventh crown. Five unanswered goals over the first and second periods gave The Blake School its fourth consecutive victory over United in the past year and the Class A championship for the fourth time in the past five seasons. In addition to Blake s 8-0 victory over St. Paul United in last season s Class A title game, the Bears also defeated United twice during play in the Independent Metro Athletic Conference. The Blake School defeated St. Paul United 3-0 on Jan. 3, and then 4-1 two weeks later. The rematch didn t go any better for United. The Bears (27-2-1) gained the separation they were looking for with a three-goal second period that turned a tight 2-1 lead into a commanding 5-1 advantage with one period to play. Ninth-grade forward Grace Johnson, ninth-grade forward Audrey Wethington, and sophomore forward Izzy Daniel each scored in the decisive second period. Senior forward Joie Phelps and junior forward Samantha Burke had goals for United (21-7-2). St. Paul United, which includes students from Visitation of Mendota Heights and St. Paul Academy and Summit School, forged its way into the championship game for the second consecutive season with a 4-2 semifinal victory over Warroad. Senior forward Maggie Conyers fueled United with three goals, including two in the first period. United also outshot the Warriors 18-4 through the first period. Junior defender Bergen Kobienia scored what proved to be the game-winner at 9:25 of the second period. Junior forward Madison Oinkers and senior forward Mariah Gardner scored for Warroad. The Blake School completed the championship rematch with a 4-1 victory over Northfield in the other semifinal. After a scoreless first period, ninth-grade forward Lilly Delianedis and sophomore defender Madeline Wethington scored goals to send the Bears to their fifth consecutive berth in the championship game. Northfield s lone goal came from senior defender Brynn Puppe, who scored on a power play with less than two minutes to play in the game. That made it 3-1 before ninth-grade forward Addie Burke added an empty-net goal for the Bears. In the third-place game, junior forward Madison Oelkers scored two goals in a 29- second span in the first period that gave Warroad momentum en route to a 6-2 victory over Northfield. The Warriors were outshot 12-8 in the first period and it appeared the opening 17 minutes of play would end in a scoreless deadlock. But Oelkers broke the tie on a goal with 34 seconds remaining in the period. The lead doubled when she notched another goal 29 seconds later. Warroad extended its lead to 3-1 after two periods, but Northfield senior forward Sarah Stowe pulled the Raiders to within 3-2 at 5:21 of the third period. Warroad then responded with three goals, including an empty-net goal from Oelkers to complete a hat trick. In the consolation final, Alexandria Area topped Hibbing/Chisholm 1-0. Junior forward Kristin Trosvig helped pave the way to victory with a short-handed goal midway through the third period. Her shot that eventually made its way into the goal gave the Cardinals the consolation crown for the second time and first since Alexandria Area senior goalie Sarah Finley recorded 24 saves in the crisply-played game that took just 1 hour, 34 minutes to complete. Sophomore goalie Abby Edstrom made 32 saves for the Bluejackets. Class AA It took three trips to a championship game for Edina to end the tournament with gold medals. In two previous championship game appearances, the Hornets were runnerup to Roseville Area in 2010 and Minnetonka in Continued on page 250 Blaine goalie Jaela O Brien turns away an attack by Edina s Emily Oden (16) and Anna Klein (19) during the Class AA championship game. Junior forward Lolita Fidler scored two goals and senior goalie Anna Goldsmith made 16 saves in recording the historic win for the Hornets program. Edina (28-1-1) built a 2-0 lead with 2:07 left in the first period on a re-directed shot by senior forward Olivia Kilberg. She was cruising through the front of the goal when sophomore defender Evelyn Adams fired a shot along the near boards. Kilberg got just enough stick on the shot to direct it past Blaine junior goalie Jaela O Brien. The Hornets wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. With just 59 seconds elapsed, Fidler scored her third goal of the tournament by deflecting a shot by junior Eva Hendrickson, who fired a blast from just inside the blue line. Fidler scored her second goal of the game midway through the second period on a rebound after an initial shot by Kilberg. Sophomore forward Olivia Swaim completed the Hornets scoring with a thirdperiod goal. Blaine was attempting to win its first title, too, but the Bengals were in a championship game for just the second time. In its previous state championship berth, Blaine lost to Bloomington Jefferson 2-1 in 2001, the final season of the single-class format. Blaine earned a berth in the championship game following a 5-1 victory over Hill-Murray of Maplewood in the semifinals. Junior forward Gabby Rosenthal, senior forward Paige Beebe, and sophomore forward Ramsey Parent each had a goal, and that same top line combined for three assists. The Bengals and Pioneers kept things close through two periods, but Blaine senior defender Emily Brown seemed to deflate any hope the Pioneers harbored when she gave the Bengals a 3-1 advantage with two seconds left in the second period. Beebe then pushed ALL-TIME RECORD-SETTER MARIAH GARDNER Warroad Most Assists One Period 3 (tie) the lead to 4-1 when she scored 11 seconds into the third period. Edina filled the other championship slot with a 4-0 victory over Eden Prairie, its Lake Conference rival. Lolita Fidler, senior forward Sophie Slattery, junior forward Emily Oden, and senior forward Anna Klein took care of the scoring for the Hornets. Fidler scored on a rebound from Slattery to put Edina up 1-0, and three minutes later, Slattery scored a goal of her own. In the third-place game, Eden Prairie defeated Hill-Murray for the second time in the season following a 6-0 victory. Senior forward Naomi Rogge led five different Eden Prairie players in scoring with two goals and three assists. She finished the tournament with five goals and four assists. ALL-TIME RECORD-SETTER ANNA GOLDSTEIN Edina Most Shutouts All Tournament 2 (tie) Hill-Murray sophomore goalie Ava Bailey faced 37 shots, including 11 from Rogge. Hill- Murray lost to Eden Prairie 4-2 in its season opener on Nov. 15. In the consolation final, two late secondperiod goals spurred Farmington to a 3-0 victory over Eastview of Apple Valley. Eighthgrade defender Brenna Furhman and sophomore forward Marissa Agerter scored goals about five minutes apart late in the second period to help send the Tigers to victory. Agerter gave the Tigers a two-goal advantage when she scored with five seconds remaining in the second period. Her longrange shot from the near circle sailed into the upper corner and gave Farmington a lead and confidence with one period to play. Eighth-grade forward Carly Lancaster capped the scoring on an empty-net goal with 55 seconds remaining in regulation. Junior defender Kati Quaintance had a team-high four shots for Eastview. This was the third time this season that Farmington and Eastview had played one another. In the previous two games, the teams split during South Suburban Conference play.
