3 Although only ten days have passed, it feels like ages since the Petes last suited up at the Memorial Centre in the early stages of the season. Before departing for a three game Western road swing, Petes fans last saw the Mighty Maroon and White double up the Sudbury Wolves in a Saturday afternoon shootout on October 14. Last weekend s three-pack started with a bang as Dylan Wells outshone fellow National Junior Team hopeful Michael DiPietro in a 5-1 win against the Windsor Spitfires. The impact of the Thursday road win was quickly muted, though, as last weekend also included losses in Flint and Saginaw on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. It was Peterborough s first regulation loss to Flint in franchise history. Peterborough s depth continues to be a key to the team s success, with players on all lines chipping in. Who will be the heroes this weekend? The electric city kids thrive when asked to prove naysayers wrong, and the upcoming weekend set could be a great example of that. After edging into the CHL Top-10 rankings two weekends ago, the Petes have fallen off the weekly list, and will look to Thursday s home rematch against Saginaw to get back on the horse. On the ice, watch for Chris Paquette to start another weekend strong, as he scored a natural hat trick in Windsor last Thursday. Paquette and the Petes will be without playmaking rookie Nick Robertson, who suffered an injury during practice and will be out for at least this weekend s games. Captain Logan DeNoble will be on the ice, however, and he is leading the Eastern Conference in points with 15. PAGE 4 OFFICIAL GAMEDAY PROGRAM At Thursday s game, the Petes will be celebrating minor hockey teams throughout the night. Minor Hockey Night is sponsored by Overtime Hockey, who will be giving away prizes including hockey sticks all night long. Students from Roseneath Centennial Public School will be performing the Canadian and American national anthems, and the Petes and Spirit will recognize Gord Downie before the game on October 26. 4 MORE THAN HOCKEY: PART 1 FOUR ALUMNI REUNITE & REFLECT AT PETES GAMES By Shelbi Kilcollins Much of the Petes reputation hinges on their extensive list of alumni who have advanced beyond their junior career, making substantial impacts in professional hockey. Steve Yzerman, Chris Pronger, Jordan Staal and most recently Ryan Spooner are a short list of the players who have made serious waves in the NHL. A team worthy of particular recognition throughout the club s history, is the Petes. This group of players was coached by Roger Neilson and produced a record, going on to win the OHA championship and earn a spot in the final game of the 54th Memorial Cup (the sole occasion Neilson made it to the national junior hockey championship). It was here that the Petes swept the tournament in the round robin, going directly to the finals where they were defeated by the the Cornwall Royals of the QMJHL in a heartbreaking 2-0 loss. Although the results were disappointing, the talent littering the team and careers pursued by the players in their time post-petes, was anything but. Neilson, of course, would go on to be the ninth coach ever to stand behind the bench for 1,000 NHL games, centre Ron Lalonde progressed to playing for the Washington Capitals, and Jimmy Jones spent two season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. On October 5th, during a win against the Flint Firebirds, a reunion of four notable alumni from this historic team unfolded. Doug Gibson, Bob Gainey, Bill Evo and Rick Chinnick sat in Suite 7, catching up and reflecting upon their journeys as Petes. Gibson, a familiar face around Peterborough, spent three years with the Petes before being selected by the Bruins in the 1973 NHL Amateur draft. Gibson went on to rotate between the AHL and NHL until he evolved into a player-coach with the Hershey Bears. It was here that he earned a Calder Cup and won the Louis A.R. Pierre Memorial award for being the most outstanding coach in the AHL, as voted on by broadcasters and writers. In 2006, Gibson was hired as a pro scout by former teammate Bob Gainey for the Montreal Canadiens. Doug filled this role for 16 years in addition to being an amateur scout for the New York Islanders. Gibson cites playing hockey in Peterborough during his time in the OHL as reason for his career forging a successful path, It was such a big part of our lives growing up, we developed into hockey players and the people we are off the ice. 5 Continued from Page 7 The notion that the Petes shaped he and his teammates character off the ice is evident when Gibson humbly followed up with, hockey has been very good to us, and not the reverse. Also in attendance at the impromptu reunion was Hockey Hall of Famer, Bob Gainey. A Peterborough native as well, Gainey was required to play for the Petes since there was no draft during his time in the OHA. Gainey played two seasons with the Petes, followed by a short season with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs and fifteen seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. He made a seamless transition to the role of coaching, heading up the Minnesota North Stars and Dallas Stars, before returning to Montreal to serve as head coach during their and seasons. Gainey proceeded to become the franchise s executive vice president and general manager from 2003 to Most recently, the Peterborough legend was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in History, at the 2017 All-Star Weekend. Gainey shared the same sentiment as Gibson in mediation of the Petes influence on his younger years, I was going with the Petes from teenager to young adult. Then I started into a professional career, certainly the foundation of it was my time as a Petes player and the coaching and the support I had here. 8 PETES PLAY BY PLAY ANNOUNCER ROB SNOEK INDUCTED TO CANADIAN DISABILITY HALL OF FAME Petes play by play announcer Rob Snoek was inducted to the Canadian Disability Hall of Fame on Wednesday, October 18 in a ceremony held at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto. Rob, a three-time Paralympian, represented Canada in track and field for over 12 years. A below-knee amputee from age one due to a congenital bone disease, he grew up playing sports at a high competitive level in Orono. Upon discovering the Paralympics in his late teens, Rob redoubled his training and went on to compete in the Games in Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000, as well as at four world championships. 9 JONATHAN ANG & DYLAN WELLS NAMED TO 2017 CIBC CANADA RUSSIA SERIES ROSTERS The Ontario Hockey League, in collaboration with the Canadian Hockey League, Owen Sound Attack and Sudbury Wolves Hockey Clubs, and Hockey Canada, announced last week the rosters for Team OHL, which will compete against Team Russia in the 2017 CIBC Canada Russia Series. Petes forward Jonathan Ang and goaltender Dylan Wells will compete in the annual series. Team OHL faces the Russian National Junior Team in Game 3 of the series in Owen Sound on Thursday, November 9, with Game 4 to be played in Sudbury on Monday, November 13. The series will begin with two games in the Western Hockey League, and will wrap up with two games played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. 28 players will represent the OHL in the 2017 CIBC Canada Russia Series, including 11 players who will compete in both games. Wells will suit up for Team OHL in Owen Sound on Thursday, November 9, which will be his third consecutive appearance in the annual event. The Edmonton Oilers prospect has compiled a record of so far this season, with a save percentage of and a goals against average of Ang, who was named a Petes alternate captain for the season, will play in both Owen Sound and in Sudbury on Monday, November 13. The Florida Panthers prospect has recorded 62 goals, 79 assists, 141 points and 165 penalty minutes in 204 OHL games, all with the Peterborough Petes. In Owen Sound, Nick Suzuki, Jonah Gadjovich and Markus Phillips will dress for Team OHL in their home rink, while the Wolves Macauley Carson will play for Team OHL in Sudbury. The Team OHL rosters were assembled by a Selection Committee that includes Attack General Manager Dale DeGray and Ottawa 67 s Manager James Boyd, in consultation with Hockey Canada Head Scout Brad McEwen. In 14 years of competition against the Russian National Junior Team, the OHL has a record of in this series, following a 4-3 loss in North Bay and 5-2 victory in Hamilton last season. 11 Continued on Page 14 After retiring from competition, Rob became a sports broadcaster, covering elite events including Paralympic, Olympic, Pan-American, Commonwealth, Canada, and Invictus Games. He frequently shares his spare time speaking about the importance of physical activity and advocating for people with disabilities. I don t feel like I deserve awards, commented Snoek following his induction. I don t do what I do for awards, I do it because I love it and I feel like it s the right thing to do. Now in his seventh season calling Petes games, Rob was formerly the voice of the rival Oshawa Generals. The job comes with long and odd hours take last weekend s four-night road trip to Windsor, Flint and Saginaw, for example. He credits his wife of 27 years, Pam, and their children, for allowing him to follow his passion. It s great to be able to share an honour like this with the people you care so much about your family and your media colleagues who allow you to pursue these avenues, added Rob. You can t have a career like I ve had, doing these unorthodox things, without support from your family. Rob is slated to cover the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games with the CBC.
