3 The Petes had a rare Thursday night off this week as some of the top prospects for the Canadian National Junior Team, including Dylan Wells and Jonathan Ang, gathered in Owen Sound to face Russia s National Junior squad in game 3 of the 2017 CIBC Canada Russia Series. After their new bus was officially unveiled Friday afternoon (see Page 21 of the program), your Petes made their way to Kingston to take on the Frontenacs in their third of eight meetings this season. Things didn t go accordingly to plan, though, as the maroon and white fell 7-1 to their division rivals. Today, the Petes will look to get back in the win column after giving up two straight games, in which they were outscored Today s competitors, along with the Ottawa 67 s, are in a three-way tie for first place in the East Division, with 23 points each. If history repeats itself, a favourable result for the Petes should be probable - the club is 2-0 in Sunday afternoon home games so for this season. Should the Frontenacs find themselves in the penalty box often, the Petes will hope to convert on the league s third-best home ice power play efficiency (31%). The team s defensive corps will need to stand tall, as Kingston has scored 14 goals in their last 2 games. For the Fronts, Jason Robertson is riding the league s longest current points streak - he has 6 goals, 4 assists and 10 points in his last 5 games. Goaltender Jeremy Helvig is on a streak of his own, having only 1 goal against in each of his last 4 starts. Off the ice, fans will find a change in the team s 50/50 program, as electronic processing of ticket sales will start for today s game. Tickets are available for 3 for $5, 10 for $10, or 40 for $20 from stationary and mobile sellers throughout the rink. Fans are also invited to support Campbellford native Elijah Crothers, who was injured in a workplace accident in mid- October. The winner of the second intermission chuck-a-puck will take home a Petes jersey, while all funds raised through the event will assist Crothers in his recovery. Operation Christmas Child will be distributing shoeboxes in the north and east lobbies in support of their annual campaign. Additionally, fans can donate $20 to the Canadian Cancer Society in the north lobby to have the name of a loved one affected by cancer added to this season s Pink in the Rink jerseys. As with every Sunday game this season, the on-ice match up will be followed up with a Russelle Toyota post-game Skate with the Petes. 4 ALEX BLACK THE EMBODIMENT OF THE IDEAL PETE By Shelbi Kilcollins THe term character player is slowly being retired as hockey, along with all sports, transitions to an almost entirely numbersassessed game. That being said, it doesn t mean these types of athletes aren t still present throughout the hockey community. In fact many of them appear on the Petes roster, including alternate captain Alex Black. The stay at home defenceman is a vocal leader, is outgoing and makes time to speak with everybody in his presence while at the rink, including staff and fans. In addition, he is described as one of the hardest working guys on the team by fellow Pete, Matthew Timms. The Kitchener native was acquired along side Nikita Korostelev from the Sarnia Sting last Christmas and will spend his final year in the OHL with the men in maroon. Upon discussing last year s trade, Alex stated, It was a whole new scenario, the coaches were super welcoming, everyone was super great. It was a super easy transition, it was probably the best hockey move I made. PAGE 6 OFFICIAL GAMEDAY PROGRAM Alex is hoping to produce his most successful season yet, with a group whose tunnel vision is set on a championship, It is my last year, I m twenty and my OHL career is coming to an end. I m hoping for a good playoff run, maybe win something. I ve won something when I was younger but its not really the same. Alex is aware and honest about his options after junior hockey and is setting his sights on playing while earning a university degree with a final goal of becoming a fire fighter. This career choice seems like a perfect fit for the Kitchener native who evidently thrives among a team environment and under stressful scenarios, When I was drafted I wanted to be a teacher, now I want to be a firefighter, so obviously I want to play as long as I can. So play in university. The stay at home defensemen recalls an injury while playing Jr. B for the Winter Hawks as the largest challenge he had during his athletic career, I had a pretty bad concussion. I sat in a dark room and twiddled my thumbs. I must have been hit in the wrong way, my neck was messed up, I didn t know if I was going to play hockey again. I didn t know what I was going to do. Although a concussion is a major setback for any athlete, this player s largest adversity unraveled off the ice, beginning with a phone call from his father. 5 Continued from Page 7 Upon arriving to Sarnia to begin training camp for the season, Alex received the news that his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, It blind-sided me. Despite the emotional weight of this information, Alex persisted throughout the season with composure and positivity. Last year the only people who knew were Jody [Hull] and Mike [Oke]. Fortunately, Sandra Black is now healthy and the remainder of the family dad Peter, Alex s fraternal twin Michael, and younger brother Christopher can relax knowing their mother is no longer sick. Alex maintains that his parents played an immeasurable role in the development of his character, Best parents in the world, I wouldn t change it at all. When they do come [to Petes games] its special. He holds particular admiration for his father, reflecting on their time together when he was younger, A lot of hockey parents now a days are super hard on their kids. My dad was never like that. He was just on me if I was never working hard. He wants to see effort at least. Black s incredible positivity and enthusiasm comes to light during Petes community events and school visits. Again, much like his disposition at the rink, Alex interacts with each child while at school assemblies so to make them feel important among their hero s presence. He s really talkative, he s good to converse with. He s open with all the events he wants to do and be part of. I can go to him with any event and he s in for it. It shows what kind of guy he is, he s very willing to help out off the ice; he understands the importance of it, explained Ryan Bird, Petes Coordinator of Game Operations and Community Relations. Alex s personality and actions reflect the character of the organization s players that have come before him embodying the entire Petes ideal of doing well on the ice and good in the community. 8 THE BRA SWINGER GETTING TO KNOW PETES SUPER FAN CATHERINE WEISS By Shelbi Kilcollins The Toronto Maple Leafs have claimed the Dart Guy (face painted, blue bear) as their unofficial mascot, and the Raptors rightfully celebrate their super fan Nav Bhatia, however, none of these figures quite compare to the Petes bra swinger, Cathy Weiss. For 25 years Mrs. Weiss has attended Petes home games. Her popularity among game day staff and fellow Petes fans has developed in light of her unconventional pre-game and postgoal celebrations. 9 Continued from Page 14 As soon as the the red light illuminates and the Petes goal siren sounds, Cathy raises a bra wider than the length of her torso and swings it above her head in celebration. The bra arrived to the Memorial Centre in her fifth year of game attendance after a male friend suggested he would swing his shirt if she swung her bra, Then I said there s no sense in swinging my bra, I m still in a training bra. The following game Weiss peer had the maroon bra waiting for her, and it has been added to her game day things to bring list ever since. Before puck drop, Cathy can be found in her seat being greeted by all the ushers and friend Dorothy Bunicka. Dorothy and Cathy s friendship bloomed after sitting in front of one another in their previous season seats, I love it [bra], I ve actually swung it a few times with her. With her pleasantly calm husband to her right and charming personality, Cathy s networking with Petes fans is natural. Cathy definitively declares the home games against the Oshawa Generals as her favourite, however, when determining a best-loved player she is diplomatically unwilling to choose, You know I think they all work hard, as long as they play together they are a team. Originally from the West End of Toronto, Cathy is also a Maple Leafs fan, with her earliest memories of the games involving her hearing impaired mother reading the lips of the players and reiterating their conversations to her father. Without being clad in gaudy attire, the petite 86 year old woman flailing a massive, ruby bra has become a component of the family zone experience, simultaneously challenging the grandmother status in the process. Cathy has cemented herself as the ultimate Petes fan and is here to graciously disrupt hockey s reputation of being an old boys club, one bra swing at a time. PAGE 16 OFFICIAL GAMEDAY PROGRAM

11 PETES UNVEIL NEW BUS The Peterborough Petes, in partnership with Coach Canada, PTBO Northern Originals, and East Side Mario s Peterborough, officially unveiled their new team bus on Friday at Flavour Fashion. The bus was designed by local brand PTBO Northern Originals and is sponsored by East Side Mario s Peterborough. Travelling over 100,000 kilometres a year, the bus will carry the Petes to their road games across Ontario and Northwestern US, as well as other teams and groups.
