shutting down their opponents 82% of the time. Sasha Chmelevski, who shares his hometown of Northville, Michigan with Petes rookie Nick Robertson, continues to lead the 67 s in scoring. He s amassed 15 goals, 15 assists, and 30 points in 35 games. Chmelevski is also tied for eighth in the OHL in shots on goal (134) 26 shots more than Peterborough s Nikita Korostelev (108). The Peterborough Petes and Ottawa 67 s meet at the PMC on Saturday, December 30 at 7:05pm for their third of seven match ups this season. The teams last faced off in Peterborough s last home game before the holiday break in a game that saw the 67 s take a 2-0 season series lead with a 5-2 win on December 14; the first was a shootout victory in Ottawa on October 6. The 67 s fell 2-0 to the Kingston Frontenacs on Thursday night in their first game of a three-in-three weekend, and will face the Generals in Oshawa on Friday night. Ottawa is in threein-three games this season, and have been outscored 13-5 in the final games of those sets of games. The Petes didn t fair any better on Thursday night, dropping their second half debut 3-1 to the Storm in Guelph. Saturday night home games, though, have been perfect for the men in maroon. They re 2-0 on Saturdays at the PMC, having earned a 6-3 win over the Sudbury Wolves on October 14, and a 5-4 OT victory over the Barrie Colts on November 4. Over the last ten seasons, Peterborough is 5-5 in their last home game of the calendar year. Three of those games were against the 67 s, resulting in a 2-1 record for the Petes, including a 7-5 win on December 29, The Electric City kids are most efficient on the power play at home at third in the OHL, scoring on 27.7% of their man advantage chances; however, the Barber Poles are operating eighth best in the league when killing penalties on the road, Saturday s game is sponsored by Wawanesa Insurance, the Official Auto/Home Insurance Company of the Canadian and Ontario Hockey Leagues. They ll be handing out free drawstring bags to the first 1,800 fans through the doors. Two lucky fans will get the opportunity to race remote control cars for the chance to win a $150 Petes Store gift card, courtesy of Wawanesa Insurance. Police, fire, and paramedic service men and women from Peterborough and the surrounding area will all be represented at Saturday s game. Members of the Peterborough Paramedics Flag Party will take part in a pre-game ceremony, while Peterborough Northumberland Crime Stoppers will conduct a ceremonial puck drop. Chief Murray Rodd will be recognized for his work with the Peterborough Police service during the game s second intermission. Additionally, over 400 Selwyn Township residents will be on hand to take in the team s last home game of Finalists in the 2018 Snofest Idol contest will be providing entertainment in the arena s main lobby before the game. Finalist Grace Hatherly, along with Jalen Brink (Lakefield District Public School) and Abby Dale (St. Martin Catholic Elementary School) will perform the national anthem. PAGE 4 PAGE 5

After recognizing the Petes effort to resolve sexual abuse, the Ontario Hockey League, in partnership with the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres (OCRCC), launched the OHL ONSIDE initiative. The program seeks to bring attention to the requirement of respecting women through their language and actions. Petes Promote OHL Onside and Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre By Shelbi Kilcollins On December 14 before puck drop against the Ottawa 67 s, the Petes recognized the Kawartha Sexual Assault Center (KSAC) and the work they have done in collaboration with the Petes and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) to combat violence against women. The KSAC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting those affected by sexual violence. The Peterborough Centre offers individual counselling, group counselling and workshops, peer supports, public education and professional training. During the season, the Petes became the first OHL team to implement sensitivity training for the entire roster of young men, with intentions to disrupt the toxic culture permitting harassment towards women. PAGE 6 According to Petes General Manager Mike Oke, The idea is to explain and clearly illustrate to our players how the words young men use, impact young women and make them feel. The two hour work shop takes place annually with each team, and requires that the players are active participants throughout the conversation. Captain Logan DeNoble reflected upon its impact. It s a different way you may not think of it before, he noted. If you were to say something around the guys you may not think about it, but when you repeat it to a girl, you recognize how offensive it is and who its hurting. It changes your perspective on things, it reinforces respecting women. At the press conference introducing OHL ONSIDE, Stephen Soucie, the former coordinator of the Male Allies Program, discussed the inclination for this type of education from athletes. Continued on Page 9 PAGE 7

Continued from Page 7 What we are seeing is a desire for young men in the Ontario Hockey League to have the space among other men to make themselves vulnerable, to break down those toxic ideas to be a man, and hopefully redefine that idea to encompass things like respect for women, equality, compassion, and empathy. These uncomfortable conversations, including asking players to assess what stereotypes are projected upon them as young men, are necessary in the efforts to prevent sexual violence perpetration as analyzed in the study Masculine discrepancy stress, teen dating violence, and sexual violence perpetration among adolescent boys by Reidy et. al. The world of sport is not secluded from sex- or gender-based violence, but organizations like the Petes and other OHL clubs are making an effort to interrupt a culture of disparaging language and violent actions that serve as foundations for larger issues. Although sexual violence is pervasive throughout society, hopefully the recognition of the weight of their words and behaviour can be transferred by the players beyond the league and into future spheres as leaders and educators. The Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre 24-Hour Crisis Support Line can be reached, toll free at: The KSAC is located on Water Street and can be contacted at PAGE 9

EdmontonOilers.com Future Watch DYLAN WELLS Goaltender Dylan Wells leads by example between the pipes. The 19-year-old is back for another season with the Peterborough Petes, who are struggling of late but working towards getting another crack at the OHL Playoffs after being eliminated in Round 3 against the Mississauga Steelheads in Wells owns a 3.58 goals-against average and a.897 save percentage and his club is The netminder sits third in the League in both shots faced (925) and saves (830). EdmontonOilers.com caught up with the keeper to talk about his season so far, the volume of shots he faces and more. Continued on Page 16 PAGE 14 PAGE 15

Continued from Page 14 Dylan, your Petes are so far this campaign. How s the season been from your perspective? It s not bad. It s been a little bit up and down so far. We re still trying to find our groove a little bit. I think we got off to a pretty good start and are a little bit up and down now. Kind of struggling as of late but that happens in a long season. This Christmas break came at the perfect time for our team so we should be good moving forward. Last year, you guys hovered around.500 and then went on an extended winning streak. Is there any resemblance to that this season? For sure. Every team in hockey goes through struggles at one point. Right now, we re just going through a few growing pains. It s good for us to experience it. You want it earlier in the season rather than later, so we re still learning how to come out of it a little bit even though there have been some losses where we felt we outplayed the other team. It s just a tough month for us but moving forward, the Christmas break should help us a lot. Come back recharged and ready to go. There d be no better time to pick up steam than the second half before playoffs. I m not worried. Continued on Page 21 PAGE 16

Continued from Page 16 How s the team dynamic this year? Any changes? Last year, we lost a few guys. Specifically, some older guys on the back end. We re growing in that department. We re a team that can put the puck in the net, we re very skilled. We re a team that just needs to focus on the little things rather than overcomplicate them. We ve shown signs of growth and we re moving toward something good. We just have to put it together now. Last year, you had a lot of rubber thrown at you. Teams obviously want to limit the shots against but in a way, it s somewhat good for a goalie to see many because it breeds experience. Exactly. As a goalie, it s nice to handle both sides of the spectrum, so to say. There are games where we ll give up shots and they re just as important as the ones where you give up 50. It s nice to go through it, especially at my age, to learn the difference and learn how to hold my focus for a full 60 minutes no matter the situation. From my standpoint, it s very beneficial. Continued on Page 22 PAGE 20 PAGE 21

Continued from Page 21 I know you were a leader in the dressing room last season. How s that been this year? Personally, I like to lead by example more - I m not the most vocal guy in the room - but I definitely would consider myself one of the leaders being an older guy and what not. There s plenty of our older guys that have really stepped up to be leaders in the dressing room too but we ve created a culture where everybody knows they can come up to us and talk. Whether it be anything off the ice or on the ice, that s something you need to instill so the younger guys feel comfortable. At Oilers Rookie Camp, you got to know some of the fellow Oilers draft picks including Kirill Maksimov, who plays for the Niagara IceDogs. How s the competition against him been this season? He s definitely a guy I keep my eye on. He s a threat every time you play him. Before he was drafted by the Oilers, we played Niagara last year in the playoffs. He was one of the key guys that we had to really focus on. His shot is next level. It s definitely a pro-level shot. You always have to know where he is on the ice. He has put a few behind me. I think he scored a couple in the playoffs last year. We played them twice this year and now that I know him from Camp, it was nice to say, Hey to him in warmups and what not. I can t remember if he scored on me this year but I think he has one.
