3 Rangers in exchange for three Priority Selection picks. The Storm took the first meeting between the teams with a 3-1 win over the Petes in their first game back after the holiday break. Peterborough holds a record against the opposition over the past five seasons. The new-look Peterborough Petes hit home ice for the first time on Thursday as they host the Guelph Storm for the only time this season. Since last Thursday s home game against the Spitfires, both the Petes roster and bench have seen change. After Jody Hull was relieved of his head coaching duties on Friday, centre Jonathan Ang was traded to the Sarnia Sting in exchange for second year right winger Brady Hinz and a pair of picks (Sarnia s 2nd round pick in 2020 and Sarnia s 3rd round pick in 2022). Although Ang s offensive prowess will be missed, in Hinz, Peterborough adds a hardworking, competitive player who has the ability to produce at the OHL level now and in the coming years. Both players have registered 21 even strength points this season. The Petes will forge ahead through the second half of the season under the leadership of Interim Head Coach Andrew Verner with a roster that was finalized after January 10 s 12 noon trade deadline. Verner s first test as bench boss came on the road in Ottawa in a spirited one-goal affair that saw the 67 s leapfrog the Petes in the standings with a 3-2 win. On Thursday, the maroon and white will face a Storm team that has seen some change of their own. The Midwest Division club saw the departure of Detroit Red Wings prospect Givani Smith to the Kitchener PAGE 4 Guelph comes into the PMC with the league s third ranked road power play (25.6%), but hold the 19th ranked road penalty kill (71.4%). Peterborough native and Guelph centre Cedric Ralph will be making his second appearance at the PMC and third against the Petes as a member of the Storm. The game also marks the return of Jake Grimes, former Petes Assistant Coach from , now Associate Coach of the Storm. Thursday s game is sponsored by Reliance Home Comfort, who will be giving away free Reliance water bottles and Reliance reusable grocery bags to the first 1,500 fans through the doors. More than 300 Peterborough Girls Hockey Association (PGHA) players will take in the game with their teammates and families. PGHA representatives will take part in a pre-game ceremonial puck drop. Fans are invited to participate in the second intermission chuck-a-puck, the proceeds from which will directed to the PGHA, supporting women in sport. Prizes up for grabs include a team signed Petes jersey, a $50 Lansdowne Place gift card, and an Ice Kats prize pack. Students of St. Martin Catholic Elementary School will perform the national anthem. The Petes are back in action this Saturday, January 13 at 7:05pm against the Ottawa 67 s. 4 Playing Big & Laughing Hard: CHRIS PAQUETTE By Shelbi Kilcollins His nomadic upbringing is a result of his father Stephane s involvement with the military, and now navy. As a child, he had the opportunity to play in rinks across the Maritimes, including Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Cape Breton. In fact, his hockey career began in a town whose reputation for producing world-class on ice talent precedes it s name - Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. The town of 25,000 is birth place to the NHL s Sidney Crosby and Nathan McKinnon. This time of year brings monumental shifts throughout rosters across the league. A year ago, the Petes acquired an integral player to their offensive core via trade - right wing/centre Christopher Paquette. To state that Chris hails from Victoria, BC is a simplified version of his journey to Peterborough, since he has seen more areas of Canada than most people do in a lifetime. Chris bopped between the West coast, Kingston, Halifax, then Niagara for his inaugural year in the OHL. His final days in minor hockey were with the Kingston IceWolves, before being drafted by the IceDogs in 2nd round, 30th overall in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection. 5 Continued from Page 7 Although fans often only see a change in the lineup come game time following mid-season trades, the reality for the young men is much more abrupt and involved. After a year and half with Niagara, where he held the role of alternate captain, Paquette transitioned to the Petes in exchange for goalie prospect Nate McDonald and picks. Obviously the hardest part is coming to a new team, a new role, new teammates, making new friends, trying to fit into a new system, Chris noted. I made friends really fast here in Peterborough. Undoubtedly, his transient lifestyle throughout his childhood eased the move. Continued on Page 14 PAGE 9

8 Continued from Page 9 Paquette was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2016, and coincidentally draws inspiration for his own game from another Pete and Tampa affiliate, Matt Spencer. The Petes alumnus and two-way defenseman signed an entry-level contract with the Bolts in 2016, and has since played 16 games for the AHL s Syracuse Crunch. Although playing opposite positions, Chris notes Spencer s approach to the game as his reason for admiration. I am inspired by his love of the game, you know - how he takes everything to heart about hockey, and he s out there to compete and make himself look or be better, Chris stated. In addition to Matt, Chris draws inspiration from the work ethic of his father. PAGE 14 Continued on Page 16 PAGE 15

9 Continued from Page 14 He does everything with 100% effort, he never likes something that is not finished, whatever it is - even if its just for fun. He always asks me to do my best, work on little things. In terms of of play, Paquette appreciates Patrice Bergeron s style, describing himself as someone who, plays big, plays fast, and uses his shot and size to his advantage. Although at first impression Chris may appear all business, he is in fact the first one among the team to erupt in laughter if the scenario elicits it. His tremendous cackling is contagious, often igniting waves of laughter from the people around him. The fourth year player attributes the comedic tendencies of defenseman Matt Timms and former Pete Josh Coyle as cause for the frequent largerthan-life giggles. Chris maturity is far beyond his age would imply, however, his joy for hockey and ability to find humour even when things are slightly unsteady is a reminder of how young he and his teammates are, in a league demanding adult expectations. 11 PAGE 20 Petes Acquire Brady Hinz and Picks for Jonathan Ang IPeterborough Petes General Manager Mike Oke announced on Monday that the team has acquired forward Brady Hinz and picks in upcoming OHL Priority Selections from the Sarnia Sting in exchange for centre Jonathan Ang. Hinz, a 2000-born right winger, is in his second OHL season. He was originally selected in the 3rd round, 52nd overall in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection. The 5 8, 160lbs Stratford, Ontario native has recorded 18 goals, 35 assists, 53 points, and 12 penalty minutes in 101 games with the Sarnia Sting. Hinz is eligible for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. The Petes also acquire Sarnia s second round pick in 2020, and third round pick in By acquiring Brady, we add a player to our team who has already been productive at the OHL level, commented Oke. He competes in battles, skates well, and has good puck skills. Additionally, we acquire some picks that we can use to add to our team in the future, be it through Priority Selections or through future player transactions. Continued on Page 22 PAGE 21

12 Continued from Page 21 Ang, who was selected by the Petes in the 1st round, 9th overall in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection, has played 233 games with the Petes, registering 73 goals, 98 assists, 171 points, and 206 penalty minutes. The 6 0, 170lbs assistant captain was selected in the 4th round, 94th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. As someone who has been a good player and committed member of our team for the past three and a half seasons, it is difficult to see Jonathan go, added Oke. However, I believe this is a move that was in the best interest of the Petes now and in the future. We wish Jonathan nothing but the best this season and beyond as he pursues a professional hockey career.
